Can't wait until the law catches up with the squid...
Another game searching for an internet stream thanks to %&*&^$$ Zenger. The Montana game on the 19th as well...
Yep, I still hate Zenger!!!
Great article...
Oklahoma absolutely dominated reigning Big East champion Villanova on Monday night to earn the No. 1 spot in the updated KenPom rankings, and suddenly, the Big 12 is looking like an absolute juggernaut. Four Big 12 schools lie within the top 16 of Ken Pom’s rankings: Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa St. and West Virginia (who we won’t break down here, but could also vault into title contention with a few more impressive performances). Take a look at the AP Poll, and the Big 12 picture looks even prettier. Kansas (2), Iowa St. (4) and Oklahoma (7) occupy three of the top seven spots, and the Sooners are a good bet to leap a few teams in next week’s poll.
But, but, but...I though the Big 12 was not strong and the ACC and the Big 10 were the strong conferences.
KenPom adjusted offensive efficiency rankings: Kansas (14th), Oklahoma (16th), Iowa St. (20th)
How can this be? Didn't KU just got schooled by Harvard?
The Jayhawks play faster than any Big 12 team based on adjusted tempo (17th in the nation), which is impressive when you consider they only turn the ball over on 15.1 percent of their possessions. That ranks 29th out of 351 teams in the country, forming an unlikely yet favorable combination of controlled chaos. Complement a turbo-quick offense
Again, how can it be?...I thought Coach Self was slowing down the offense and putting the brakes on the greyhounds... I'm shocked, shocked I tell you
I could go on, but you get the jest...the gloom and doom seems to be highly localized.
I asked because it looks a lot like mine except my entry is the full height and I don't have all the Royals decorations...
You are right. Gotta have some fun amidst the doom and gloom that seems to permeate the board when Coach Self does things differently than the forum's resident master coaches feel he should do...:(
Yes, Boeheim gets to vote since the polls and NCAA are not related...I bet he cheats on that too... :D
Very nicely done. :+1:
The same thing was said about the Harrison twins and see how it worked out for them. If Skal continues playing like he did against UCLA, he will not be a lotto pick, and pretty soon we will see how well he does against tougher competition,
Is that your home?
Yep, blame it on him...off with his head, get a rope or ...wait, @HawkInMizery better not be Muslin or I will be in deep %hit and have the entire federal government on me for hateful speech. On the other hand, if he is a Christian I might get an innvite to the White House...:D
One question, and I assure you is not meant in bad way...what makes you think that Coach Self is doing it wrong and that you know more than he does? Don't you think that a coach, one who is universally consider to be one of the top active coaches in college BBall, would know more about the strengths and weaknesses of his own team? Like I said...just curious on your rationale...
There is a good chance Diallo goes to the NBA, provide he can show enough to be a lotto pick. No question that he is one of the greenest recruits ever but with a huge potential and unless he is a savant like Embiid (can't think of another player like him) it might take more than one year. and he will likely be top 5 r even top 3. The NBA is carefully moving away from pure potential since many unproven players with just potential have not quite panned out.
I would not place much weight on the Coaches Poll; I believe most of the elite program coaches (including Coach Self) have indicated in the past that they have an assistant take care of it and they do not "vote" themselves, so naming the coaches as the voters is somewhat disingenuous...
Here is the current list of coaches that vote...
The USA TODAY Sports Board of Coaches is made up of 32 head coaches at Division I institutions. All are members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The board for the 2014-15 season: Tommy Amaker, Harvard; Randy Bennett, Saint Mary?s; Jim Boeheim, Syracuse; Todd Bozeman, Morgan State; Glenn Braica, St. Francis Brooklyn; Rick Byrd, Belmont; Scott Cherry, High Point; Tim Cluess, Iona; Ed Conroy, Tulane; Keith Dambrot, Akron; Scott Drew, Baylor; Matt Driscoll, North Florida Steve Fisher, San Diego State; Bruiser Flint, Drexel; Mark Fox, Georgia; John Gallagher, Hartford; Ray Harper, Western Kentucky; Dick Hunsaker, Utah Valley; George Ivory, Arkansas-Pine Bluff; Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa; Rob Jeter, Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Danny Kaspar, Texas State; Mike McConathy, Northwestern State; Greg McDermott, Creighton; Matt Painter, Purdue; Dave Paulsen, Bucknell; Randy Rahe, Weber State; Joe Scott, Denver; Bobby Hurley, Arizona State; Shaka Smart, Virginia Commonwealth; Bob Williams, UC-Santa Barbara; Mike Young, Wofford.
I would venture to guess that the great majority of smaller school coaches do not even watch elite program games much as they are too busy with their own programs and small staffs. There are two Big 12 co0aches that "vote" Scott Drew and Shaka Smart...what are the chance they will vote KU high?
What is there really to learn with this team? This is basically the same team from last year, with the exception of Diallo and Bragg.
...yes, but you left out a big factor, one additional year of experience and one WUG tournament to get ready. Even without Bragg and Diallo, this is NOT the same team from last year...not even close..
I am curious...who would you place ahead of KU? I know the grass always seems to be greener on the other side of the fence but if you go to other top teams forums you will see that they all think their teams are seriously flawed as well.
If you think that Self does not know what he is doing...how do you think he continues to win at the rate he does? Since he is generally consider by most analyst a top 5 coach,,,how poor do you think the coached ranked below him are? Have you consider that he likely has a lot more information and he sees a lot more than all of us combined in this forum have?
I agree that Coach Self want to develop players but he also has to win games...right? In that particular game and in Coach Self's opinion, Lucas was the better option to win that particular game. Lucas is done being developed, he is at the stage where he is expected to contribute and Coach Self believes that this is just what he did.
That's what she said...sorry, couldn't help it...:D
You mean the ABS crowd?
Many Louisville fans feel Pitino will not survive the stripper-gate investigation and could be damage goods, much like how Calvin Sampson ended up.
His replacement did pretty well...
Other than a a way above average season and Travis Ford is toast; he is one of the higher paid coaches in the conference and has seriously under performed.
On a separate note, Baylor, the 5th team in the conference beat Vanderbilt which is one of the top 2 teams...maybe even top team, in the SEC. KSU 6-1 with a good win over Georgia and the only loss to UNC. Shaka (not so) Smart and Texas under performing and learning that running with big boys is not that easy.
Games to watch this evening...Oklahoma-Villanova and tomorrow West Virginia-Virgina.
He could be...if he takes a red shirt year and graduates, he could transfer and play one year for KU. It is possible but extremely unlikely.
Too bad for Phil Forte. He seems like a classy player that has certainly overachieved and exceeded all expectations. I hate it when he goes off against KU but you have got to respect him as a player..
I agree with your take and that is what Coach Self has been saying all along about high expectations for Diallo. Yesterday he was completely out of it and id did not make sense to have him play when he is so out of the game. Against Loyola he was raw but not wild and he settled after a while and had a good game...yesterday was not that kind of game.
A tired Mason of Graham is better than a fresh Vick?
That is as good an explanation as any. Vick is a 4 year player and he will get his time...in time.
Isn't Coach Self's primary job to win games? Doesn't his livelihood depend on it?
Maybe you should switch your allegiance to winning program, like...MU? Then you will not have to endure magnificent flame-out after magnificent flame-out and you will be so happy when you actually have a magnificent flame-out in March because it would mean you actually made it to the dance; of course this would not happen very often so you will be OK...after all, you will always have UCLA out there in la-la land.
Have you consider that Vick might have been injured or on as "soft" suspension due to on or off-court issues? I am not saying that either is the case but in the past, players that skipped classes, for example, had their playing time cut. Maybe we should give Coach Self the benefit of the doubt before we start second guessing him; he is obviously a lot better at what he does than all of us...don't you think?
It is far from speculation. The information came from the only poster, @ralster, in this board that, as far as I know, has visited with Coach Self extensively, and his info in the past has been rock solid; it has also been discussed in other forums and I have not seen anything that indicates it is not correct...maybe you have proof it is not? Have you read that Greene's rant was so bad that his parents were called in and his father did not seem to have any problem with the suspension? I imagine he would not have been surprised by a permanent suspension. This has been widely discussed before and there is no evidence to the contrary.
As far as the surgery, that was a long time ago and he has had plenty of time to recover based on the new surgical techniques currently used and time it now takes to recover; if he is not physically up to playing, then he should not even be suiting up for the game and should have taken a red shirt, right? You cannot have it both ways, if he is not up to speed then he should not be playing, if he is up to speed then you cannot blame his lacks of effort on the injury, right?
🏆 right back at you!
What exactly do I win? It is not a contest, it is just a sports forum friendly discussion, right?
As per ESPN these are the top teams for the Big 10 and the top 5 Big 12 team they would face...
Michigan State 9-0 -- KU
Purdue 8-0 -- ISU
Maryland 7-1 -- OU
Northwestern 7-1 --- WVU
Iowa 6-2 - Baylor
I personally believe that worst case the Big 12 goes 3-2 and can go 4-1.
Question: Since the Big 12 has only 10 teams what do you think the score would be if the top 5 teams and bottom 5 teams in the Big 10 or the ACC play against the corresponding top 5 and bottom 5 teams in the Big 12? I believe the Big 12 wins both series.
I believe they were referring to their players...:)
Interesting that the NCAA chose not to vacate the 2003 title....yes, that one...even when the violations started in 2002...makes you wonder why...probably the same reason why they are waiting to punish UNC until after the season since it has teams contending in both football and basketball
In all fairness, several coaches from other programs that have been to Hawaii indicate that it takes a full two weeks to recover from the jet lag resulting from traveling across so many time zones.
The Big 12 is from top to bottom the best conference but only KU and maybe 1 or 2 other team are consistently national contenders. Other conferences such as the ACC have 3 or 4 good teams but the rest suck.
Just about every top coach in college BBall including Coach Self is on the record indicating that by the meat of the schedule they prefer to play primarily 7-8 players and a few more limited minutes. The squid famously tried platooning last year so he could play 10 players and he indicated afterwards he will never try that again.
I guess you missed the part that read "players like Curry" and not just Curry alone. Curry is the gold standard and as was citing him as such and also because I have seen at least a dozen Golden State games this season and Curry always amazes me, but he is by no means the only one, every good 3 point shooter knows how to get open with or without the ball to get the shot off and when not available he will drive to the basket
Greene is a one trick pony that cannot get himself open, is not capable of taking it to the hole when the open shot is not available, and will not shoot when closely guarded and let's not even start talking about his defense...or lack thereof...
Do you think that Greene is the best player at KU? Well, I don't either but according to reports, in his outburst, he was telling Coach Self that he was the best player and he should be playing more...how do you think his teammates took these comments?...my first guess would be laughter followed by pity and then annoyance and exasperation...how would you have taken his comments and how do you think his comments impact team chemistry?
If you don't think KU play in a great conference, please tell me which conference do you consider great? Which conference has sent a higher percentage of teams to the NCAA than the Big 12, say in the last 3 years? Which conference sent 70% of its team or 60% of its team like the Big 12 did in the past two seasons? Which conference has 30% of its teams ranked in the top 6 or 50% in the top 25 on the current poll like the Big 12 does?
I know it is fashionable by the East Coast press to call the ACC or the Big 10 as the top conferences but the numbers and final conference season rankings in the last few years indicate the Big 12 is from top to bottom the top conference.
I agree with you and posted pretty much the same thing a few days ago. All elite programs have a big advantage playing at home...this is why it is called home court advantage. :)
You understand that under valuing MSU does not help your cause, right? They are still the team to beat...so far.. They beat KU on that particular game but KU rebounded nicely, enjoy the current team and stop dwelling on one poor game.
Seem to be a class act as well...on and off the filed, but then, I believe most every player in this team has been pretty much scandal-free.
Spacing and ball movement? Have you ever seen Green do that? He just stands in one place hoping the defender moves away so he is wide open for the spot up shot. Greene cannot get open with or without the ball. Watch how players like Curry get open with or without the ball and get back to me...like I said, his offer to help in areas he has shown he is not capable of doing is...well, silly...
Yes, it is. Great win for KU.
KU comes back from 21-25 to win the third set and beat MU... :d
Didn't say they were good predictions ... :)
The game is on ESPN3 right now and...surprise, surprise it is not blacked out!!!
KU leading 2-0 and down 19-21 in the third set...
