Maybe you should re-read the thread. Jaybate Indicated that maybe I did not understand his point. I did. Mine was related only to coaching and nothing else. He is always free to post anything he wants, the same way you and I do, and and I don't have a problem with that and in fact, he made some very valid points in reference to the "big picture" view of the position, but once again, mine had a very narrow scope...I would think that I can do that as well, right?
I see your point but it is unrelated to mine. My post was solely about coaching and NOT about recruiting, endorsements; "jock washing," shoecos or succession...just old fashioned coaching and I still think that Vaughn and Collison would be awesome.
Are you thinking of OU's Hield?
And Niang's response?
If you go back to the pre-season and start of the season, particularly after the UK game, Texas, OU and ISU were the the teams picked to win the conference.
Here is an ESPN story ↗ where analysts are jumping back on the KU wagon...big effin' surprise...
Here is the average of 40 computer rankings with Sunday games included:
- No. 8 - KU
- No. 13 - WVU
- No. 14 - ISU
- No. 16 - OU
- No. 17 - Baylor
- No. 24 Texas
- No. 31 Oklahoma State
- No. 64 - TCU
- No. 69 - KSU
- No. 144 Texas Tech.
The top 5 are just about the same I have; I had ISU and WVU tied for second but place ISU ahead because of its win over top ranked KU; if you take KU out, Pomeroy has it completely backwards. Pomeroy and Stat Fox are the only rankings that have Oklahoma in the top 10. Pomeroy is not only out of whack with the general public perception (AP and coaches rankings) but also with just about every other computer ranking as well.
Here is Seth Greenberg picking ISU and KU ↗with the sleeper being Texas...of course this was before KU put the hurt on Texas.
I agree with your assessment. LeBron is in a class by himself and Love is also one heck of a player that has put consistent high number for several year. Wiggins is doing better than many expected and will likely have a great career. Don't forget that some members of this forum wrote that he would be just an average journeyman in the NBA.
Yes, Kimmel was pretty good.
Some of those situation are QB options where he calls the play at the line of scrimmage depending on how the defense lines up. It was the first interception ever for the Patriots player.
The offside after the intersection was also a boneheaded play. If they scored on a safety instead, they would have received the ball and have at least a chance, albeit a very small one, to win the game. The fight was an act of desperation but classless nonetheless.
That was one bad call. I wonder if he was just trying to spare his young QB the agony of having to deal with the press and affecting the rest of his career. Even if the entire Patriots team lines up to stop Lynch I believe he would have gotten the 1 yard they needed, after all they had 3 tries and time left to do it.
Was the call made by the coaches or by the QB?
The Patriots dominated the first half and yet the score was tied. Fairly boring game in my opinion except for the last couple of minutes.
See my post on the Kem Pomeroy thread...
What do these 4 players have in common: Collison, Hinrich, Reed and Frankmap? They were all sons of basketball coaches and they all came with fundamentals well beyond those of the average freshman player and they had careers at KU (except Frankamp, of course) that exceeded expectations. I believe all of them have coaching in their genes and they all would or maybe will actually make good coaches.
Look at the highlighted stats for that game, they tell the story...
KU tried that in Ames and did not work out well...but then, KU was not supposed to be able to run against OU in '88 and look how well it turned out in the title game... :)
This is the latest Pomeroy ranking of Big 12 teams. I used only the top 8 conference teams since we are more familiar with them;
Ranking, overall and confrere record and conference standing:
- No. 9 - Oklahoma, 14-7, 5-4, T-4
- No. 11 - Kansas 18-3, 7-1. 1
- No. 13 - Baylor 16-5, 4-4, 6
- No. 16 - WVU 18-3, 6-2, T-2
- No. 24 - ISU 16-4, 6-2, T-2
- No. 26 - Texas, 3-5, 8
- No. 28 - Oklahoma State 14-7, 4-5, 7
- No. 74 - KSU 12-10, 5-4, T-4
I don't have a problem with the bottom 3 in the list but the top 5 are, IMHO, all wrong; I just don't get the love Pomeroy has for Oklahoma; they were a couple of spots below KU and after their win over 7th place OSU they moved once again above KU, never mind that KU beat a higher ranked (in conference KSU). His ranking are also at odds with most evry other ranking computerized or otherwise. I would personally list them in this order:
- KU
- ISU
- WVU
- OU
- Baylor
I would be particularly interested in what @Jesse-Newell thinks about these rankings.
As I have said before, I am not too worried about WVU and I think that the Mason/Graham combo will routinely break the press and our bigs will have a field day inside, much like Texas did.
ISU on the other hand is a bad match up for KU. They play fast and they all can hit from outside, which necessary stretches the defense and leaves the inside vulnerable, particularly with slower defenders like Alexander. A high scoring game with little defense favors ISU; a defense oriented, lower scoring game favors KU.
I would not mind seeing a lineup of Mason and Graham at guards, Selden, Oubre and Greene splitting time at the 3 and 4 and Perry playing inside. Traylor would come in when McKay is in the game as he would be a good match in speed and strength. This is seven man rotation that can get tired, so other players can come in as needed when ISU rests their core players. All of ISU's 5 starters average over 27 minutes per game and they also have 5 other players that average close to 15 minutes. Bench production will be critical.
Everyone on Duke's coaching staff is a Duke graduate, even Jeff Capel who was very good player at Duke but a below average HC in college. Many assistants have gone to become Head Coaches but only a few have been very successful so far. KU on the other hand only has Bechard, director of basketball Operation as the only KU graduate.
Wiggins had a great game and scored 33 points frequently taking it to LeBron and Love and, on a couple of occasions, he went against both of them to score. Other than rebounding, Love is really not a good defender. Once the Wolves get to full strength they will be pretty good; Rubio is expected to start playing any time now. I am convinced that we will be seeing Wiggins highlight for a long time...

Ken Pomeroy finally dropped WSU about 5 spots but his ranking of the Big 12 teams still sucks...or blows...or both...
I believe I ended my original post with the phrase...I can dream...
This is NOT and essay on shoecos or recruiting, my emphasis was on the coaching aspects and who knows the PG position and has links to KU better than Vaughn? He is one of the brighter athletes to graduate from KU, and while maybe he did not have the physical side to be a NBA starter/star, he is/was as sound a player at that position as they come and he also has coaching experience. Same situation with Collison; while he might not have the tools to be a NBA superstar, his amazing technique. overall game soundness and leadership have kept him in the League for long time as a valuable component of the teams he has played and made him a wealthy man. I cannot think of anyone else that I would pick to coach the bigs...this is not to say that either has an interest in coaching college, but if they do, I would certainly hope KU is an option. Remember that Danny had no real links to Coach Self either and was a long time removed from KU; it worked out pretty well for both sides, wouldn't you say?
Like I said...I can dream...
Popovich and Self are longtime friends from the time they were both assistants at KU under Larry Brown and Popovich has been Vaughn's mentor in the NBA, so I would think that by extension, and as former Jayhawks, they know each other well. Jaque is still young at 39, so he could be considered a potentially successor to Coach Self down the road. Having said that NBA coaches tend to stay in the NBA.
Vaughn is arguably one of the top 3 PGs at KU all-time and he also played PG in the NBA and he could really teach the younger players how to play the position. Vaughn and Collison are two of the more fundamentally sound players at their positions.
We are old school. These strange haircuts the younger kids wear are just not our cup of tea.
No, no, no...way too complicated. I was simply referring to AL Gore who was anointed president by the press before the election took place much like Texas was anointed Conference Champion before play started, and more importantly, without checking with KU first.
Al Gore himself said in one of the late night show...I used to be known as the next president of the US. Did not work out well for him then and it is not working out for Texas now. No need to involve any other politicians.
Baylor spanks Texas who is now 3-5 in conference and pretty much out of the run for the Championship. Texas is the Al Gore of sports, the team that was going to be the next Conference Champion; so much for that.
OSU ahead of OU by 7 at the half; the loser will be 4-5 and like Texas, pretty much out of the race. Look like it will come down to KU, ISU and WVU; KU winning Monday would be huge and would go along ways towards winning the Conference.
So...who gets the next haircut, Kelly or Davonte? I say go for the twofer...
To the best of my recollection, the ball just left Mason's hand and the block was well time...like Selden's blocks from behind. Obviously, without the block the ball goes in.
I have been saying for a while that his pop is back...you have to really get up to get those blocks from behind. BTW, he had 4 blocks and was 3-6 from 3.
I don't believe it was over the rim since Mason was laying it from the side, Pretty much the same thing with Selden's blocks from behind that were not over the rim. were not in their way down and had not touched the backboard either.
The rule is defined as: the violation of interfering with the ball when it is on its way to the basket and it is (a) in its downward flight, (b) entirely above the rim and has the possibility of entering the basket, and (c) not touching the rim. In NCAA basketball, WNBA and NBA basketball, goaltending is also called if the ball has already touched the backboard while it is above the height of the rim in its flight, regardless of whether it is in upward or downward flight or whether it is directly above the rim.
I wrote that KU would open a lead and coast to a 10-12 point win and Perry would have a good game...right on the money.
Did not see him getting hit only the blood afterwards...
Brannen's defense has improved by leaps and bound (see rebound and block at the end of game at TCU) but it is still not at the level of the other players and can't really create his own shot and relies on someone else setting him up. He is still a one dimensional player albeit a great one dimensional player with one sweeeeet stroke.
LOL...If I was bigger I'd punch you just like this...instead I will take it on the floor...it's the closest I will come to beat anything KU related today...
He is usually good from the FT but both teams shot poorly, KU 10-17 and KSU 12-21...still I would say that Perry (7-9 from the field) was the Hawk to Rock followed by Selden (4 blocks) and Greene (3-4 from 3).
Perry's 2-6 from the line hurt more...
Stephen Hurt...
Called it. KU builds lead and coast to 10-12 win; Perry has a good game...:)
10 for Mason...
Good game for Selden...
Yes!!!
Slow down, play smart and don't take any chances. ISU is coming in 2 days and need to be ready...
...at half time...
ISU running away now...
Come on Devonte, you are in the big Leagues now...
Thankfully we have an inside game...
KU 2-10, KSU 0-7
Perry with a double-double at half...
TCU down only 2 points at half; hopefully they can pull it off.
