New Board.... β€’ Jul 28, 2014 08:45 AM

OK...this is weird. The index shows this thread as being new thread with only my post and no replies, but when I open it, it show several post from 7 months ago. I will guess that there was another thread with the same name and it displaying the post for both. Oh well...growing pains...

New Board.... β€’ Jul 28, 2014 08:40 AM

Congrats Approxfinity, the new board looks great and I am sure soon enough we will start discovering the new features. The preview feature is great as it allows you to see your post as it will show up.

Again, a heartfelt THANK YOU for the hard work and for providing a platform where Jayhawk fanatics can exchange ideas and share our passion for the team we love. Again, your effort is greatly appreciated.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Go KU!!!

Wilt and Ed Sullivan... β€’ Jul 28, 2014 08:31 AM

@Crimsonorblue22
I saw the movie when it premiered in Lawrence and was not impressed. The perspective seemed to be not favorable to Phog Allen or Naismith for that matter. All the game scenes were poorly recreated when they could have used original footage, but I guess a rift with Chamberlain's family (and maybe KU???) nixed that. Wesley was pretty good. Also they had long commercials for the director's other projects that look like amateurish movies a grade school kid would make and seemed longer than the actual movie. in short, the concept was good but the implementation poor.

I might watch the movie again if it comes to free TV or cable but, and as much as I like all KU-basketball related things, I would not pay money to see it a second time. Just my opinion and probably others think differently.

P.S. The above was posted to the old form but it was probably done post-transfer.

P.P.S. I like the preview feature :)

Wilt and Ed Sullivan... β€’ Jul 27, 2014 10:15 PM

I ran into this video of Wilt on the Ed Sullivan show quite by accident...

[Wilt and Ed Sullivan video...](

Interesting that Wilt only has just one short sentence and a thank you at the end; oh how shows have changed. BTW, was Wilt that tall or Ed that short?

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 27, 2014 10:09 PM

@drgnslayr

I agree to a certain extent a star or team leader(s) leaning/yelling/getting on players' faces to extract the most out of them; although most self-confident, true leaders save the yelling for the locker room and if they do it during a game, they do it discretely and not overtly (to get. attention IMHO). However, LeBron has already sent a message to Wiggins, Bennett and whoever else is involved in the trade, that they are not good enough to win a championship, where Love, who has not even gotten his team to the playoffs in six years, is. Mind you that the message was to players he does not know and has never played with or against before...a different situation than yelling at teammate Mario, wouldn't you agree?

"One" Is The Loneliest Number β€’ Jul 27, 2014 07:32 PM

@HighEliteMajor

The big assumption you are making is that Wiggins was playing guard for the Cavs; he was not.

In the Summer League he played small forward ( the 3 position) and as such. his role is to keep the ball in motion and when available slash to the basket or take the open shot, play defense and get rebounds; assist are not the primary responsibility or a priority for a SF; that is the job of the guards and sometimes the big guys, when they can get the ball inside, collapse the defense and then kick it out to the open man on the outside.

You can look up the definition of small forward and you will see that passing, if even present, is at the bottom of the list. Scoring, shooting, driving to the basket, rebounding, dribbling and defense are normally what is expected of a small forward.

As far as:

As to @JayHawkFanToo and your "what ifs", -- what if Wiggins was under the influence of the mob, and his contact told him that his boss was betting the under on the Wiggins assist line held by the local bartender running book?

Right, coach Self told Andrew -- "Andrew, when you drive, I want you to ignore your teammates. Focus solely on the rim. If you can pass and give your teammate an easy basket, you should ignore that." Your premise (what if) is just silly.

Now, that is actually silly, condescending and uncalled for. The primary purpose of the Summer League is to evaluate players individually and not as a team, since they will never play together again. How many people know who won the Summer League? Other than a handful of die-hard fans and scouts, probably not too many. I followed only the games/teams where former KU players participated, and this why I know that McLemore's team beat Tarik's team in the championship game. I am sure that the Cavs wanted to see is what Wiggins and Bennett could do, since realistically they are the only two players that will get minutes for the Cavs. So it is not unrealistic but actually likely they were told to primarily show their individual talent. The summer League is a place where teams can see prospect play, for the first time, with talent better than college but not quite NBA-like, under game conditions, and evaluate players outside the constrains of college team play. It is really that simple.

BTW, you concentrated in the one area which is not his primary responsibility or purpose, and ignored the other areas that are, and in which he led the team.

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 27, 2014 06:46 PM

@DoubleDD

Wiggs is a once in a life time kind of talent.

Too much hyperbole? I would have to strongly disagree with that statement. "once in lifetime" implies the best player ever, doesn't it? younger players are taller, faster, stronger, better trained, so, we likely have not seen the best player in our lifetime.

I believe that Wiggins might be the best "prospect" in a couple or maybe even several years, based mostly on his freakish athleticism; however, there are lots of players in the NBA with similar athletic ability. The NBA history is full of player that were "the next Wilt" or "the next Jordan" and more recently "the next LeBron," and some never lived up to the hype, some went to have good but not great careers and a few went to have superior careers. I believe that Wiggins will have a superior career but I would not (at least not yet) anoint him as a "once in lifetime" talent.

I too would like to see what he can do and I would take the chance and keep him. However, because LeBron's stance on the issue, the locker room chemistry might have been permanently damaged, given that Wiggins, Bennett and whoever else LeBron was willing to throw under the bus will likely get considerable playing time and they might not look at LeBron's position kindly; I know I would not.

On related news, It is being reported that Love's agent had officially asked for a trade to Cleveland, which would weaken the Wolves position considerably and strengthen the Cavs, who now might be able to offer less. The saga continues.

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 26, 2014 11:52 PM

@icthawkfan316

Wiggins does not have a history of injuries while Love does. In his 6 years in the NBA Lobe has played 81, 60, 73, 55, 18, 77 out of a n 82 game season. I would be more concerned with Love getting injured than Wiggins, Remember when Love got his elbow injure while sleeping? Now he has pulled out from the FIBA Basketball World Cup USA team supposedly because his contract status, but the talk is that he does not want to risk injury. So much for that.

"One" Is The Loneliest Number β€’ Jul 26, 2014 02:52 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Using just one statistic to state that "exhibits a huge flaw in Andrew Wiggins' game" after 4 Summer League games is misleading and premature.

Fist, we don't know what he was told to do by the coaching staff. Maybe he was told not to pass and tale the shot or drive to the basket. Also, he was playing the three, a position in which the player is more of a slasher and not necessarily an assist man. Yes, I am sure you can argue that many player that played the three had lots of assist, but usually, the guards take the lion's share of assist in a team. In many ways, the four and five are better positioned to have more assist particularly if they play a variation of the hi-lo, where the ball goes inside, the defense sags and maybe double teams the star player and he can make the pass to the open player on the outside; Olajuwon was great at this is so is Love. BTW, Wilt led the League in assists one year.

Second, he was playing with group of players he does not know, he had not practiced with them long enough to know where they would be at any time so he could make the pass, and if you watched the last game, you saw that Houston played Hack-the-Wigg with him and every time he caught the ball he was fouled and went to the line 20 times. Also, we don't really know how many times he had the ball in a position to make a pass/assist and did not make or missed the pass.

By the way, he led the team in scoring, free throws, steals and blocked shots...and highlight dunks...again, doing what he does best.

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 25, 2014 09:10 PM

I wonder what the situation would be if Wiggins stays in Cleveland. LeBron has barely mentioned him, the most positive comment he has made is that he is "intrigued" by his potential and has openly and publicly advocated trading (or should it be throwing) him to the Wolves for Love. When you think about it, you wonder if LeBron has the "next LeBron" moniker assigned to Wiggins in the back of his mind and sees him more as a potential rival than as a teammate. Keep in mind that that at times he was a real a$$ with Mario in Miami and his behavior was largely ignored by the press since Mario was not a high profile player; would he pull the same crap with Wiggins? Would Wiggins put up with it? Interesting question to ponder on a news-light summer day.

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 25, 2014 06:17 PM

@icthawkfan316

Once a player is drafted the team retains the right for quite some time. If he goes to play overseas, the Cavs would retain his right for one year AFTER he is done playing there; so going overseas does not help him unless he wants to sit a year after playing overseas. This how many teams draft European players that they know will not be available for several years and basically "park" them there.

Here is an article that does a good and balanced job describing Wiggins potential and the "build vs buy", "right vs wrong", "San Antonio vs Miami" approach to forming a championship caliber team.

Gibson, while not really a star, is a decent players; don't forget that he finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting last season and was invited to the USA Select Team that practices with the USA team in 2012 and 2013, so obviously many think he is pretty good.

While he is a stud defensive player, his offensive game has been improving. Here is a link to a story that discusses his potential:

It seems like many are projecting him to start, although with Gasol in the house, that might not happen.

Is it too Soon? β€’ Jul 24, 2014 12:20 AM

@HighEliteMajor

Hmm .. I think you can trade a guy not under contract. You can trade the rights to him.

I believe that is what I said:

"The reason that Cleveland needs to sign Wiggins is because without a contract they cannot trade him, they can only trade the rights to him."

The rights apply only before a drafted player sign a contract, and in some cases, teams might also retain the rights if a player retires before the expiration of the contract and until the contract would have expired.

Once a player has signed a contract and the contract has expired, the club has no ownership rights and has no say in where he goes or how much he makes. This is why Minnesota is desperately trying to trade Love while he is under contract, because once the contract expires, he is a free agent and can sign with whichever team he wants and the Wolves get diddly-squat. Look at LeBron, his contract expired, he did not pick up the option and joined the Cavaliers and Miami got bupkis.

Is it too Soon? β€’ Jul 23, 2014 05:55 PM

@icthawkfan316

That is a pretty decent offer. Mirotic is still young (23) but has 6 years of Euro-ball and has lots of potential to be the next Kevin Love. McDermott has also lots of potential but he is considered a tweener in the NBA, too small to play the 4 and too slow to play the 3; he could be the next Wally Szczerbiak/JJ Redick or he could be the next Adam Morrison. He is a good fit to Thibodeau's system and I believe he will have a good NBA career.

Is it too Soon? β€’ Jul 23, 2014 05:21 PM

@ParisHawk

The reason that Cleveland needs to sign Wiggins is because without a contract they cannot trade him, they can only trade the rights to him (like it is customarily done on draft day), i.e. the new team will have to negotiate with Wiggins without assurances that he will sign. I don't believe any team would take a chance like that. There is only so long a rookie can hold and still sign at the full pre-set salary; after a certain time (January???), the contract is pro-rated.

I don't believe you can trade unsigned players since you really have no ownership interest. This is why the player is signed before the trade, or if the players is still under contract (the current contract has not yet expired), the player; usually agrees in writing that he will sign an extension with the new team. This is what Love will do since he is still under contract for the upcoming season. If Love completes the upcoming season with Wolves, when the contract expires they can no longer trade him and he is free to go wherever he wants with no compensation to the Wolves. This is what the Wolves must trade him while he is under contract. Makes sense?

As I indicated before, and according to the CBA, unsigned lottery picks are included in the team salary cap upon their selection in the draft,

Is it too Soon? β€’ Jul 23, 2014 03:26 PM

@ParisHawk

I am not sure Wiggins contract would be $0, since his salary is per-determined by the draft order; teams can negotiate based on this number and can offer between 80% and 120% of the rookie scale, with most lottery picks getting the higher offer (remember Xavier Henry, protracted negotiations?).

According to the CBA, unsigned first round picks are included in team salary immediately upon their selection in the draft.

Now, if he chooses not to sign and play elsewhere, Cleveland retains the rights until one year after he completes his obligation with the other (non-NBA) team.

The CBA is extremely complicated and I have learned a lot in the last couple of week..although some of it might not be correct. :(

Is it too Soon? β€’ Jul 22, 2014 06:53 PM

@icthawkfan316

A free agent can get a max 5 year offer from his own team where other teams can only offer a 4 year deal.

It is amazing how much the Cavs are catering to LeBron. This is what ESPN wrote:

"Although James is said to be intrigued by Wiggins' potential and to have tracked his progress during summer league, sources say he has backed the Cavs' win-now pursuit of Love, with whom he played on the United States' gold-medal-winning team at the 2012 London Olympics."

As I said before, LeBron wants to win now because he does not plan to stay in Cleveland past 2 years. He is waiting for the new TV contract that will raise the cap big time and he will sign a monster contract with the highest bidder.

As far as the Bulls, Gibson and Butler? wouldn't that offer drive the price down?

@drgnslayr

Money wise I would say pros bet 95% of the money; this is what I heard once upon a time while in Vegas. By pros I mean the guys that beat many time per week and amateurs the one that bet occasionally, usually when they are in Vegas on vacation.

If you go to the Vegas books, you will see the pros betting thousands of dollars at a time and they don't care who they bet for as long as they believe it will win for them. Amateurs will bet a small amount for their favorite team. If a hotel in Vegas will comp you the entire stay, then you are a pro, if not then you are an amateur. Now, I am talking about Vegas betting; I am not sure what the % on internet betting would be.

Is it too Soon? β€’ Jul 22, 2014 06:21 PM

@drgnslayr

The main conditions for the trade is that Love signs an extended contracts with the Cavaliers, which he said he would do. If he does not sign, there is no trade.

Is it too Soon? β€’ Jul 22, 2014 05:04 PM

Obvious a greatly improved Fran Mason would be the best news since PG has been the weak position on the rotation.

I believe Selden will show up much improved as will Traylor. If Michelson develops into the rim protector he was projected to be, then the Center position will be solid. Ellis had gotten rave reviews in the summer camp circuit and if his defense has improved, he could be a game changer; he has solid fundamentals and is a smart player, so all the pieces are there for him to flourish.

Now, ESPN believes that Framkamp will do well and has placed him in the list of sophomores to watch. With one year under his belt and more confidence, he could be the deadly sniper that KU has not had for a while, a Jeff Boschee type of player.

@Kip_McSmithers

Brendan Haywood is a long shot...or maybe not. He is getting up in age and he did not play last season due to injury; coming back from a season ending injury is tough, particularly for an older player. Also, he is the only other center in the team and his 2014 $2M salary might not be enough; he is also schedule for a $10M salary for 2016 which might have to be paid by the Bobcats, but would not count against their cap if I understand correctly, and the team he is playing in that year could waive him and save $10M form their cap...and that is the attractive part of his contract. It is a very complicated contract and I am not sure I fully understand it. Here is a link that might shed some light...

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 21, 2014 09:09 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Keep in mind that in the NBA is strictly man to man, so unlike college, you can't really double or triple team a player...if you do, you will be killed by the other players. Remember that every player in the NBA is an elite player compared to the total population, so while some are better that others, even the lesser players are pretty darn good.

The other point is that Love is going to come at the max. salary of about $22M. To accommodate his salary, Cleveland will have to shed at least 4 players including Wiggins and Bennett who are on their rookie contracts and making around $5M. The end result will be like Miami, a team with 3 super stars, a couple of role players, has been (Lewis, Hasslem), bidding time 'til retirement (Allen, Battier), never were (Old man Oden) and former/current druggies/screw-ups (Anderson, Beasley); obviously the lack of bench was exposed in the playoffs and they were taken to school by San Antonio and its deep bench.Miami has gotten some good players to replace LeBron, and it might end up being as good as the previous team, definitely more balanced and maybe even better.

@ParisHawk

Even in sports like basketball or football where you usually bet on the spread, you can also bet on the money line or odds. In either case, you ARE betting on the outcome.

@drgnslayr

The line is initially set up but the experts based on the most likely outcome that will result in a 50-50 betting distribution. After the initial line is set up, it moves solely based on the amount of money (not the number of bets) wagered. in order to bring the bets as close as possibly to the ideal 50-50 distribution, where the house is guaranteed a profit.

Generally, amateur gamblers bet small amount where professional bet larger sums.

Addendum: Slayr. I did not see your edited post so we ended up saying the same thing :)

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 21, 2014 04:12 PM

@HighEliteMajor

HEM, no question that Love has awesome numbers, but you need to put the numbers in context. Not taking anything away from him, but his stats are partly the result of playing for the Wolves, where he is not "one" of the options, he is "the" option and the alpha dog/woolf, and if you watch him play, you will see him jump over teammates to get rebounds to pad his stats.

Like in real estate, location, location, location; where you play makes a big diference. Remember how many times it has been written in this board that players like Andrew White would be starters with big numbers at other schools, but he could not get meaningful minutes at KU? How about Royce Wooldridge? At KU he got walk-on playing minutes but at Washington State he was second in minutes, averaged almost 10 PPG, including a 36 point outing, and led the team in assists and steals. Look at Chris Bosch's numbers; he was averaging Love-like numbers in Toronto but his number went markedly down at Miami playing with LeBron and Wade. Again, where you play and who your teammates are makes a huge difference. How good would Karl Malone had been without John Stockton setting him up?

In Cleveland he will be playing with LeBron and Irvin, who much like Love, are not shy about taking shots and they will not defer to Love like his teammates did In Minnesota and he will not be jumping over Varejao and Thompson either. Unlike Ricky Rubio (9.5 PPG, 8.6 APG) at Minnesota, Irving (20.1 PPG, 6.1 APG) is not a pass-first type of point guard and he will take his fair share of shots. What do you think the chances are that Love will maintain those averages if he moves to Cleveland? IMHO, extremely small.

Again, there are two sides to every issue and while Love is a great player, I am not convinced he is the difference maker he is portrayed to be. He might well end up being like Dwight Howard and the Lakers, good individual numbers but a disruptive player that resulted in poor team numbers...or he could be like Shaq and help Cleveland win several rings. It really is a crapshoot.

@jaybate 1.0

The NBA has been trying to develop a squeaky clean image and even the appearance of intermingling would be frown upon. I just cannot see the NBA going any further than it has and risking potential government intervention which would be the beginning of the end of the sport as we know it. Remember the whole Donaghey scandal? Congress threatened to intervene then but luckily it did not. The only branch of government that works reasonably well is the military, and that comes at a high cost; nothing else the government manages is efficient or well run. The most government regulated sport, boxing, is also the most corrupt.

While I generally agree with your characterization, there is a fine line between having a killer instinct and being a selfish player or ball hog. A selfish player will take the last shot, regardless of how easy or difficult it is, while the player with the true killer instinct will find a teammate under the basket and make the pinpoint pass that allows the teammate to score the easy basket and win the game.

He claims he only lost 1 time in the high jump to the current Olympic champion; he also claimed to have never been beaten in the shot put, including beating KU legend Al Oerter, whose specialty was the discus.

Once he left KU, he only played basketball. After retirement he took up volleyball and by some account he was every bit as good as he was in basketball. Considering his long career, how many minutes he logged and how physical the game was back then, he was remarkably injury free. One knee injury (?) sidelined him for a few months but that is the only significant injury that comes to mind.

@jaybate 1.0

The bulk of Vegas style betting does not depend on the composition of the teams; it uses the spread to account for the difference. As long as half of the bettor bet one way and the other half the opposite way, the house is guaranteed to make a profit on the "vig." This is why the spread constantly changes to insure betting is balanced.

Also, the betting industry depends more on the compulsive bettor and not on the one time, big event only bettor. Compulsive bettors will be on anything as long as they think they ha chance to win -they seldom do- occasional bettor will bet on their team. regardless of the odds (say a KU fan betting on the NCAA), but this type of bettors are not sufficient to support the industry. Just my opinion.

Also, although a firm number for the salary cap is just about impossible to pinpoint because of all the exemptions, it looks like after signing Wiggins, the Cavs will be right around the salary cap. Love would come in at over $20M per year which is well over $15M of what Wiggins will be making, so in order to make room, the Cavs will have to shed several players and the team will resemble Miami last season, a team with no bench...did not work too well for Miami either.

Based on what i have seen so far, the more likely number of wins is 3-4 with a ceiling of 5. I posted just about the exact same thing in a different thread. I don't believe it would be an issue with Adidas. they rule Europe in soccer and signing Wiggins to play BBAll there would be the greatest coup ever; it would be the equivalent of having the best European soccer prospect come to play in the MSL. It most certainly would throw a monkey wrench in the Cavs plans.

At this point the process is like a chess match where teams need to look not just at the next move a but a few moves ahead. having a good agent is crucial and can make all the difference; helpfully Wiggins has a chess-master of an agent..

Very cool!

It is easy to see that every players has a favorite spot. Interesting that some player you think are good shooter are not and vice versa.

I believe the information comes from the real time tracking the NBA teams have in place; College teams are not quite there yet.

The Lebron Legacy β€’ Jul 18, 2014 05:18 PM

Interesting developments. Apparently LeBron has reached out to Kevin Love about joining the Cavaliers. He knows that the only way to get Love now is via trade that includes Wiggins.

Interesting that LeBron has not mentioned Wiggins a single time, which lead me to believe that he does not want Wiggins around, why? Because he probably sees Wiggins as the up and coming player and potential rival, ready to eventually take the spotlight from him.

LeBron definitely seems to be calling the shots in Cleveland and, if I understand correctly, he has two year contract but the second year is "his" option, which means that he can leave after one season...one of those things that make you go hmmmm or as the younger crowd would say...WTF?

Also interesting that Wiggins has yet to sign with Cleveland, and likely playing in Las Vegas under a "Summer Contract." What happens if Wiggins tells Cleveland to shove it and opts to play in Europe for a while? I am sure European teams would pay 2-3 times what he will be making under the rookie contract in the NBA. I am not sure how long the Cavs retain his rights under this scenario.

BTW, after (and if) the Cavs sign Wiggins, they have to wait 30 days before they can trade him. Wiggins can hold signing, all the while Love's trade value declines and makes the trade less likely.

Embiid signed with Adidas. The conspiracy continues...

I read both and I still believe Cleveland should hold on to Wiggins. Superstars have not always gotten a Championship (Barkley, Ewing, Malone); however, regardless of the supporting cast they usually made the playoffs; in six seasons The Timber Wolfs have missed the playoffs every year.
Here is an article that nicely outlines the situation:

I am not convinced on well the LeBron-Love combination would work. Kevin Love is commonly referred as a "stats stuffer" more interested in padding his personal statistics than advancing the cause of the team; also, his defense is sub-par and offers no rim protection like other comparable players do. Of course, it worked OK in Minnesota where he was the alpha dog, but in Cleveland with LeBron and Irving, two renown ball hogs, i am not sure if there are enough plays to satisfy all three.

As I said before, Cleveland has a long history of making bad decisions and this is a s big a decision as they come.

I saw that. ESPN had a roundtable of writers and all but one thought Cleveland should not trade Wiggins for Love...but then, the Cavs have a long history of bad decisions.

Coach K Takes Swipe At Andrew Wiggins β€’ Jul 17, 2014 10:40 PM

I don't read much into the comment either. There is a good chance that the talk with LeBron took place before the draft and before Wiggins was selected by Cleveland...remember, Embiid was supposed to be the top pick.
