Svi vs BG • Dec 11, 2015 11:34 PM

@KUSTEVE

"Svi’s year is next year, imo. If he stays…"

I haven't heard that he will leave to play foreign ball. I was under the opinion that his focus is the NBA, and coming to Kansas was part of his pathway to succeed in the league.

I just don't see him leaving after this year. The media will (most likely) be giving their attention to Cheick, and maybe Wayne... maybe even Perry.

Svi needs to stay in school all 4 years. Grow up his body and his game. He has made quite a jump in his body over the past year, and now must learn to play in his new body. He should continue to build his body in the off-season and use the season to adjust to his changed body. At the level his body is changing... it really does require him to adapt to his changed body.

Plus... he still needs lots of time just to adapt to American ball.... D1 ball... He needs to "master" that first before considering the NBA.

Hard to guess accurately how he will turn out, but my money is on Svi making it to the next level and also being a real contributor in the NBA. The game needs to slow down for him, especially on his perimeter shot. Scant defense is all it takes to distract him enough to brick the shot.

Really, considering Svi, BG and Wayne.... even though BG is red hot from the perimeter, I've been most excited about Wayne's perimeter shot. He came to Kansas with a very unorthodox shot behind his head, and has cleaned up his form and is now getting the benefit from his hard work. He must have really worked his arse off to become that effective with his changed shot over such a short period. To produce like he is producing (at this level of ball) takes the kind of muscle/mind memory changes that can only happen from mega repetition. Wayne elevates well on his shot, has a fairly quick release without a hitch, and has the strength of an ox (giving him the ability to shoot from very long distances without "pushing" the ball).

My hope is that Wayne comes to realize that NO ONE can stop him on his trey! He doesn't need a great deal of space to have adequate scoring space. From what we are seeing so far this year, he will quickly catch the eye of NBA scouts. He still needs to clean up a few areas of his game, but if we do well in March, good chance he is gone. If we have an early exit and he doesn't have a sparkling year, good chance he returns for his senior campaign.

@betterfireE

"Greene is a wing"

Last year... no way Greene could be considered a 3.

This year... he is definitely taking on more of the role of a 3, even if he plays some minutes at the 2. He seems to be more athletic this year. Maybe part of this relates to his healing up. Or maybe he has also increased his strength quite a bit by working with Master Hudy. He started to intensify his play (both offense and defense) towards the end of last year, and seems to be carrying that over to this year with even more intensity. I've been impressed with him starting to listen to coaches and lowering his center of gravity by bend his knees more and widening his stance. I know that sounds like an easy thing to accomplish, but it really isn't. A big part of it relates to genetics... how the body is proportioned and mechanically working. It is a major task to adjust something like stance and have it stick as "natural." I am very impressed with Brannen's obvious commitment to improve his game. He requires being pushed, but the only thing that matters is he improves his game. Bravo, Brannen! Just so he doesn't let stuff get to his head and he keeps his nose to the grindstone and keeps a humble focus.

What I expected.... gutless response from a conference that is just about to evaporate because of being gutless.

Really? "Appropriately handled?" For what, a cattle drive?

If you want to set these up and protect people, you start by treating them like cattle. Right after the game, quickly pull out "cattle runners" (cattle fencing) and make the crowd go through those to limit the rush of the crowd.

I recall, back in the 70s, and I was at a Stone's concert in Boulder. I was up front and when the Stone's came out the crowd rushed forward. Many people were seriously injured and I was horrified... being pinned in front of me and in back by bodies, lifted completely off my feet and rushed forward about 50 feet within a few seconds. Several people went down and were trampled... hauled off in ambulances. This is no joking matter and our league is run by a bunch of clowns. Clowns dealing with clowns.

Someone needs to call this in to Self on one of his Q and As. Let's make sure our people leave Ames in one piece.

What would we do... if we lost one of our guys for the year because he was trampled by a clown? The worthless Big 12 authorities wouldn't do s#it.

There we have it... most likely the reason for this fall recruiting flop. How hard is it to realize that if we don't give OADs minutes then we will start failing to get them?

In fact... better put players just below the OAD line in this category, too. They still want minutes in their freshmen year. All a recruiter has to do to knock Kansas out of consideration is give them a link to this page.

I'm amazed we can even sign the 99th player.

What really stinks is that you can throw Cliff out of the picture because maybe he was trouble... there is still Kelly and he didn't play a lot until Big 12 play.

I guess someone can argue that we don't want to embarrass players by playing them before they are ready. But... how many of these recruits believe they need work first before playing D1? Right... none. They are all the second coming of Christ.

@benshawks08

Yep... we have committed to this configuration.

If we lose Frank or Devonte, the other will be our PG... but will also need to rest and not do what Frank has done in the past and play all those minutes and be all beat up come March.

Part of coaching is have backup plans for every situation. There is a decent possibility that Frank or Devonte goes down (even if just a short time). The repercussions would be felt in March, especially if the healthy one is stuck with too many minutes.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out now that BG is back. He won't be of much value if he can only get 5-8 PT minutes a game. Same for Svi. Svi is really putting a smile on my face every time he takes the ball to the rack!

Did you catch the ISU/Iowa game last night? ISU's offense is basically a dribble drive with the focus on collapsing the defense and feeding trey shooters. I think we should be doing more of that, especially since we typically have 4 guys out there capable of driving the ball. Sometimes all 5!

If the Big 12 can't step in and protect our players maybe we need to show up with AR15s and combat gear. I guess that is legal now. Your own vigilante. I was reading how vigilantes are setting up in front of mosques in Texas.

I guess we have had life way too easy over here because we (as a society) have become aggressive over just about everything.

Wow... endanger lives because we are bored? The entitlement psychosis has run amuck!

@ralster

Many solid comments!

We have great depth... except if we lose Frank or Devonte. They get so many minutes on the court together. Of course, we may play our best ball with them both out there, but we are "putting all our eggs in one basket."

I hope BG and Svi get enough PT to not only keep the rust off, but enough time to advance their games. Both need to work on their handles.. Vick is going to be an awesome player, sooner rather than later, but not sure sooner means this year.

Wayne.... I'm imagining that part of why he is making a better impact this year is perhaps Self finally did him a favor by redacting the "he can play anything 1 to 4" comment. Wayne needs to focus on executing at the 3 or 2... not to be our backup PG behind Frank and Devonte. That responsibility should be with BG or Svi. That is a silent contribution they can make to this team by studying the PG position and work on handles just in case they are needed.

ISU getting whipped at home • Dec 11, 2015 04:48 AM

I caught the ISU game tonight. Still can't believe Iowa fell apart like that but I guess that explains why they are unranked.

I thought the ISU fan base proved themselves to be ridiculous once again. They appear as rabid as Isis. They were completely harassing the refs and they booed the Iowa player that got poked in the eye. On one extremely obvious call that went against ISU, the cameras panned to the near fans screaming "F U" at the refs standing there. What a bunch of tasteless clowns.

I experienced decades of KU-MU basketball. There have been some crazy moments, including complete brawls.

I look at the current ISU situation at Hilton and I am far more concerned about the safety of our team over any of those old MU games in Columbia. The fans at ISU are mentally sick in the head. They know this is "their year" being Niang's last. Would they accept a loss to Kansas in their own building this year? No.... they will not!

I'm not surprised that Randy Peterson suffered a significant leg fracture in the court storming. What surprises me is the gutless, classlessness of Steve Prohm discounting the incident and not speaking out trying to stop the court storming. Just imagine what is awaiting us there this year if we lose in Ames (let's just call it "Aims")? Imagine what is awaiting us if we win there?

Steve Prohm, by discounting this, has endorsed this kind of behavior. He should be held accountable on the next injury (or worse) from an ISU court storming.

Now let's see if the B12 has any balls and puts their foot down on this one.

@jaybate-1.0

Very interesting post.

I kind of like the idea of having a 4-pt line and bringing the 3-pt line in closer, basically making it a 3-pt mid-range shot.

One issue is that you can DOUBLE the scoring from far versus the easy slam. This could get very interesting. It would open up the door for some very wild finishes to games. I could see teams that are behind not even guarding in the paint and giving away 2s.

FTs would almost become meaningless... so perhaps that gets changed, too. How about making a rule that if the player SWISHES a FT, he gets 2 points? I know it brings it another area where things could go wrong. But... that is where technology helps out with sensors in the rim.

I like the idea of putting a GPS chip in the ball. Make the rule that it is the ball that has to be behind the line when leaving the player's hand. So there would have to be a sensor that would read when the ball leaves the hand. All very possible technology that could remove bad officiating from the equation. I'm guessing schools like Duke (and other BigShoeBought universities) would fight this because it reduces their officiating advantage.

Think about all the calls that could be decided by technology and corrected.... Goal-tending calls... out of bounds calls...

All of these changes would totally change the game... but we have already gone down that path, thanks to BigShoe and BigMoneyMarketing.

@KUSTEVE

"This team flat murders zone defenses. It’s quite a sight to see 5 different guys drilling 3s."

Yes!

And we should be able to do the same thing against a decent M2M defense, too.

I think we need to unleash Perry more. It seems like he should be the perfect candidate to help force at least one defensive big out on the perimeter to stop his trey shot. We need to use Perry's trey more to help break down defenses.

Another thing... we do use high ball screens, but we rarely take advantage of the mismatches they help create. With our awesome guards... a guy like Frank can take it in on about any big and score (and get fouled).

Look at how much the game of basketball has changed over the past 10 years or so.

"Mismatches" used to mean that a big offensive player was suddenly guarded by a shorter defensive player in the post. Then we would see "back to the basket" scoring.

Today... the "mismatch" tends to work the opposite. The goal is to get an athletic guard up against a slower big to drive the ball and score.

This is a part of the shift from "Y axis" basketball to "X axis" basketball. It is the realization that there are more opportunities by being more gifted with lateral, horizontal movements, than just being tall and vertically capable. Trey shooting also fits in the scheme of "X axis."

@justanotherfan

"Selden matches up pretty well with Niang."

I think so, too. Wayne just has to stay focused all game because he has a tendency to lapse sometimes and that is when he gets burned.

In the past, I don't think we have prepared well enough when facing Niang. The scouting report shows his sweet spots on the floor. I noticed last year how much more he focused his scoring in just a few spots. He likes to get positioned in the low/mid post area and use a baby hook or score off the drive and use the backboard on his sweet spot.

If we know that, then when he gets into position, try more ball denial defense and do a bit more to contest his shot or at least deny him his driving path and force him into driving on the left side.

KU BIG'S vs BIG 12'S BIG 4 • Dec 10, 2015 05:46 PM

Coaching plays a huge "X factor" on subjects like this. Yes, there are some talented bigs in our league, but we've seen these bigs before so we should have them scouted well and know how to play them.

In a way, we might have an advantage with an OAD player like Cheick. No way to exactly know what will work against him until they play.

I say all of that taking for granted that Cheick will develop quickly and become a big factor for us.

The depth should be a positive factor for us.... if we properly USE our depth to our advantage! Typically, we haven't done that but I hope this year we will.

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 03:01 PM

Svi's shot hasn't come around... but I like what I see when he drives the ball, either out in transition, or in the half court. He looks like he knows how to finish.

Great to see BG starting to drive. That should help him develop some moves to create his own scoring space from the perimeter as well as potentially becoming another scoring weapon.

Devonte was a great spark for us. He seems to be the best pickpocket artist we have.

It's nice to see some chemistry forming on the floor. Hard to imagine what these guys are capable of if they master playing together.

The Easy Button • Dec 10, 2015 04:21 AM

@HighEliteMajor

Solid post.

I think the success of our season will depend mostly on whether or not we can execute our pace and style in games. If we do that, who can beat us?

I'm with you... that was a pleasant game to watch.

I think it was a solid developmental game. Cheick got some minutes. He also was exposed in some areas for being raw.

Hunter stepped up on defense. I think he is a guy you can just substitute into a game and he might not produce a lot. However... if you start him or work with him a little bit just so he stops feeling so insignificant, then he will produce. And he will produce whatever you ask from him. Landen may be a better rebounder... maybe... but I'm surprised Hunter hasn't seen more minutes because he does defend the post and challenges shots.

BG... great to have him back! I think the disciplinary action helped wake him up some. He still made a few errors, but his defense is improving, along with his rebounding. I saw him actually pull off a very aggressive seal on the boards. I'm trying to think when was the last time I've seen a Jayhawk actually butt someone completely out of the paint?! Bravo, BG!

We've got to keep pushing that ball, either to finish the initial break or set up the secondary break. This works great against teams the like to run slow half-court offense. I noticed some times when we were able to get them out of their stuff. That was the only time we can say we really defended them... when they pushed their tempo to a speed they weren't comfortable with. Even our press was helpful.

Seeing Devonte go down really made me think. We really need another ball handler available if we lose Frank or Devonte.

For the most part, I liked Wayne's game tonight. I like how he continues to look in the low post for assists. However Wayne goes... so goes the team! He may not quite have the touch BG has... but I am willing to bet he may have the best range on the trey. He is so strong, and he has compressed his stroke.... I think he can nail treys from even further out. I'm thinking his trey is going to win us some games this year.

Bragg? What's not to like? He may not score 20 a night.... but it is clear that he can contribute his freshman year... and every year after!

Starters next game • Dec 09, 2015 04:28 PM

@DoubleDD

"If coach can’t play Bragg and Diallo against the likes of Harvard? Then will they play?"

Depends how they have been practicing.

We all want these guys to start getting minutes so they can become seasoned for March. Self wants that, too.

But this early in the season, it is important for these young potential stars to EARN their minutes and eventual starting position. EARNING minutes on a court helps young players take POSSESSION of their PT and become RESPONSIBLE and ACCOUNTABLE for what they do with their time on the court.

Self is spot on with his comments about players "getting it." (or not)

Interesting article on Perry Ellis... • Dec 09, 2015 03:21 AM

@JayHawkFanToo

Thanks for the link!

I think Perry has looked a little sluggish these past games. He looked better in the first games. But it is just too early to declare him "dead" for the year.

If Perry stays healthy, I feel we will be praising his play later in the year. He looks to be in the best condition of his life, and he is ready to be more aggressive than past years.

A lot depends on the help he gets, both in the post and on the perimeter.

@Crimsonorblue22

I think you are on to something.

The young guys look up to the veterans and are being mentored by them.

If our freshmen immediately take over all the PT minutes, it must get harder to keep these roles. If they take minutes gradually, and earn them, then everyone saves face and the old guys continue to mentor the young.

Just an idea....

Self Playing "Whac-A-Mole" • Dec 07, 2015 07:30 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Can you ask your friend which coach or coaches are responsible for teaching bigs how to rebound?

With all the bigs we do have, we should dominate just about anyone on the boards, if for no other reason than the fact that we can run fresh bigs in constantly.

Self Playing "Whac-A-Mole" • Dec 07, 2015 07:24 PM

Landen can do something big to help our team, and it won't show up on the stat sheet.

He can (at least) be the example of a big man sealing off for rebounds to show Cheick. Without him, Cheick has no example of what to do and how to do it.

I'd like to say Landen learned to seal off while at Kansas all this time, but he brought that with him.

I don't understand how it can be this tough for our bigs to learn to seal off the boards. I'm sure their inability to learn and develop is also hurting our recruiting because it is hard to look at us right now and think Kansas develops bigs.

I had a coach once tell me...

"Everyone on this planet should be able to shoot 70% from the line. That is the magic number that comes strictly from muscle memory and mind memory."

Anything below 70% and guys aren't putting in enough reps. Everyone is different on muscle and mind memory. But... if you put in reps, you know when you have FTs "memorized." From that point forward, you will be a legitimate FT shooter. Part of it is the confidence, too.

Self Playing "Whac-A-Mole" • Dec 06, 2015 05:15 PM

!pMAT1-17680123enh-z6.jpg ↗

It feels like Self is playing a game of "Whac-A-Mole."

At any given moment, all of our post players deserve to ride the bench. Other times, they each deserve to be out on the court.

None of our post players deserve a free ride.

So, our post players play soft or flub up, and WHACK... off to the bench they go and another mole arises from his hole. Ready to go until he proves himself ineffective, and then.... WHACK!

Meanwhile, fans become frustrated. But what about the frustration Self faces? And the frustration of his players, too?

What is the answer? Will the sea part and the clouds vanish to expose sunlight by merely giving Hunter a few more minutes? We know Cheick is behind on development because of his NCAA situation. He, most likely, will be with us just a few more months. He needs to get minutes if for no other reason than picking up experience to help him play in conference play and March.

But we still have to go out there and try to win games now. Landen earned his second half minutes by being the only post presence that could rebound. So we all have to wince every time he gets the ball in the low post and doesn't dunk and doesn't finish. But... which post player do we have can be counted on to finish at the rim? Right now, the answer is NO ONE!

Our post guys bounce their heads up from the hole and go out there on the floor. Their confidence is fragile, but gets a lift when stepping onto the court. Then they go out and fail. WHACK! The mallet comes down on their head and they return to the bench, heads down, confidence crushed again.

All our post players get a big taste of up and down in most games. They earn enough confidence from their coach to be put on the floor, and they earn enough disappointment to be pulled from the game.

A pattern is forming, and that pattern is mediocrity.

What post player (or players) will rocket out of their hole(s) and bring serious game... enough to prevent them from their next WHACKING?

Speaking of BG • Dec 06, 2015 04:28 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Nice post on Greene.

I said this summer... this would be the year where I stay on BG's butt and not give him any breaks. BG had been living on "fool's gold" in the context of why Self said it in the first place. He had put all his eggs in the trey basket, satisfied to be a one-trick pony.

But I am sensing that all the heavy pressure on Greene is starting to wake this guy up. In his limited time on the floor, he looks like he is starting to come around more on defense, and rebounding, and he even has made attempts to drive the ball, earning him FTs.

I'm not building a single expectation for Greene moving forward... because I don't want to be crushed in such a speculation. He could end up transferring in January... or he could finally "give up" his old patterns and thoughts and start buying in to becoming a well-rounded player that might have a career after D1 somewhere. Until he does that, he isn't even a good candidate for euro-ball.

BG doesn't have crazy athleticism. But he has a great build to build on, and he has reasonable court awareness. He has plenty of upside. We should be seeing big leaps in his game every year. He should be a different player come March of this year. I hold no expectations but plenty of hope for BG. He is a Jayhawk. He needs the development not only to help his team, but to help him with his pursuits after D1.

My next concern... is there someone around to help direct his development? Aaron Miles, perhaps? I know he can't actually coach these guys up formally. But he can sure talk to players and advise.

A few games back, when we shot FTs poorly.... Self made a comment that indicated he really didn't know if his guys were practicing FTs. That really stuck out and made me wonder if he follows (or directs) any of the player development.

@Lulufulu

I've noticed Perry is often soft before conference play. He will play tougher in conference play and hopefully in March. This is his last dance in D1... he better bring his best game when it really counts.

I've just never understood how players can play soft one game, hard in another. What happened to egos? Don't these guys hate to lose or get dealt on during the game?

Sometimes I think some of our guys just don't carry enough self pride.

I don't want the talent they get.

If you have 9 friggin' McDs AAs on your roster and you can win a NC... in my book... you are the laughing stock of the universe!

If we load up like that, then we better win it all...

What pisses me off is that we don't develop players like we should.

It has taken Perry 4 years to start using a shot fake. That makes our program look bad.

Few of our guys know how to seal off for a rebound. That makes our program look bad.

Worse... we lose to teams with a lot less talent because of all of this. I find it disrespectful.... to the university, to the fans, to the game. For players to not even focus on the very basics of the game, blows my mind.

Why?

Why? Why? Why?

We knew from the day we put Harvard on our schedule.

This game's outcome would be determined by pace.

Who controlled it?

Sure wasn't us.

I thought we were all about a fast pace this year? Guess not.

Instead... we decided to grind it out against an Ivy League school with a losing record. ON OUR HOME COURT. And we were extremely fortunate to have won.

We will never control our own destiny if we can't control the pace of a game.

We will always be in deep doo-doo if we have Landen lightly jogging back and forth to each side. He might as well jog... because no one else was turning up the speed.

@Duanep5ku

Great! They should package it with the 1985 WS when we came back from a 2-0 deficit to take it all after a 11-0 spanking of our I-70 rival, the St. Louis Cards.

What Can We Learn Tonight? • Dec 04, 2015 10:50 PM

I predict a UCLA victory by 10.

Oh... it has already been played and my prediction was spot on!!! ;)

But seriously...

I didn't watch the entire game, but I watched a few minutes here and there and then watched the entire last 4 minutes.

Yes, Kentucky got exposed... if you realize from this loss that Kentucky has a heck of a lot of potential and could be almost impossible to beat in March.

Gone is the supersize. They probably won't have near the shot blocks as last year.

But look at the gain. Ulis and Murray together in March is a monster leap over the twins.

This team is going to be dangerous if they stay healthy and continue to develop. I think much better than last year's team. And they are actually playing a tough schedule this year... so no more undefeated season. That alone should make them a lot more dangerous because they can focus on improving instead of just defending an undefeated season.

I think their one vulnerability is size in the paint. Especially girth.

I think it is best we DON'T START Cheick for a few more games. Let him see the game for a while on the bench and gather his thoughts before going out there.

And that also shows some respect for Jamari. We might have some less-than-perfect opinions about his play... but he has been around for over 4 years now and has been a soldier to Self and our program. It shows some class to not quickly whack him from the starting lineup. Let it happen but over several games.

That doesn't mean Cheick shouldn't get more minutes of PT over Jamari and the rest of our bigs fighting for those minutes. That part should be determined during games based on performance and fouls.

@Crimsonorblue22

I am curious why Jamari thinks he is going to get a rebound by positioning himself directly under the basket. He will get more rebounds by standing at the top of the key.

That one fact blows me away. It did last year, too. I captured still images from a game and posted them as proof. He spends all that energy wanting to get a rebound and totally gifts over the position to our opposition.

I'm not desiring to bash Jamari. But I also can't glaze over reality.

I am sky high on Vick.

Not on what he can provide us right at this moment (though he does offer plenty).

I'm thinking we have a player that could easily be with us for 4 years and will eventually make a huge contribution over 4 years!

@HighEliteMajor

Man... you work hard on your posts. Great work!

There must be a reason for all of this.

I was over reading on KUSports this morning... about Vick. And he mentioned how Jamari helps him... kind of mentors him. Of course, we hope Jamari isn't passing on his basketball knowledge! Yikes!

But I am starting to think that Jamari is the "example" of how a player earns PT. He isn't our most capable player but earns PT. I think the message to the players is that it really isn't a matter of making a mistake or not. It is all about having the right attitude, hustle, yada yada...

I'm not at practices... this is just speculation. I am trying to find an angle to address the situation with Jamari.

@DinarHawk

Or a subtle way of making it look like our coaches developed more of his game than the reality.

"Raw" players don't put up those kinds of numbers in just a few minutes by playing raw.

But his upside is so friggin' off the charts that might as well call him "raw" because by March we probably won't recognize him as the same player. A big part of that relates to how hard he works in practice.

I remember many years ago I was having some target practice with some bros and I took out one of my tallest trophies. Surprisingly... it held up pretty well until I unleashed the 12-guage shotgun to it. One blast... no more trophy.

I know there is a huge airplane salvage yard in Arizona.

Maybe someone needs to open up a salvage yard for all the old trophies.

@JRyman

Plus... it is a bit depressing for me that all I have left from my playing days is a few tattered jerseys. My trophies somehow went missing after our last move. I never was the type to show that stuff off... they were permanently kept in a box, probably next to the box of jerseys.

@JRyman

I think I have all my game jerseys packed away in a box in storage.

I don't dare want those present in my current life... otherwise, all I will hear is "you sure can't fit into those anymore."
