Self Supports Shockers Potential #1 Seeding... β€’ Jan 23, 2014 08:22 PM

Wow... lots of great posts in here! I sort of forgot about this thread.

I agree with @justanotherfan , and the Shocks deserve a #1 seeding with no or one loss. They may have a soft schedule compared to KU, but it still is tough to win out all season. They play teams that know them well, and on the road. It is a long season and tough for any team with any schedule to go undefeated or with just one loss.

I try to watch all of Kentucky's games and there is no way they have the nucleus they had in 2012 when they won it all. They have more future talent now but lack enough experienced players to give them some balance. Something big will have to click with that team if they hope to be a real contender in March. And I'm pretty sure a solid execution team (like WSU) would expose a team like Kentucky.

I would say the same thing about us versus the Shocks... but I'm starting to see us play some decent defense, and if we keep improving like we have been in B12 play, we would give the Shockers every kind of challenge (and then some) come March!

I think the Shocks would have hammered us a month ago. Today, I see it going either way... and in another month I see us clearly dominating WSU!

McDermott VS Embiid VS Wiggins β€’ Jan 23, 2014 06:59 PM

John Gasaway, over at ESPN, wrote an op ed called "Top 25 Players in College Hoops", where he ranked current players based on his own value system for how they impacted the college game instead of how NBA scouts rank players for draft status, based on their potential at the next level.

http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10330237/doug-mcdermott-leads-nation-top-25-players-college-basketball β†— β†—

http://www2.kusports.com/weblogs/tale-tait/2014/jan/22/embiid-wiggins-crack-bloggers-list-of-to/ β†— β†—

Gasaway concluded that the top player in college basketball is Doug McDermott. Joel Embiid finished 9th and Andrew Wiggins finished 21st.

I was unable to finish reading his story because I don't find enough value in the ESPN media to warrant paying to read their opinions. But... I'll go ahead and post my own ideas around this story and the rankings that came from it.

Doug McDermott is an outstanding college player. And I agree with most, that he may have a problem maintaining his current status at the next level. I'll only rate that as "maybe." McDermott might lack some of the athletic acrobatics we've all come to gush over, especially in highlight reels. But what is clear in McDermott's game is the amount of coaching he has been blessed with his entire life. His current head coach is his father, Greg McDermott. When it comes to fundamentals, Doug McDermott is head and shoulders above the rest of the field of top college players.

I do not need to go into detail about the qualities of Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid, because this is a site for Kansas basketball, and I'd like to avoid most of the redundancy in text we've all been posting for months. But I will mention a few things that are important for the sake of argument, when comparing these 3 players.

The biggest difference between McDermott and both Kansas players; college game experience. McDermott has seen more D1 court time than both Kansas players combined and times 3. We all value experience because it tends to help players achieve over all the challenges present in the game. Experienced players tend to play with more consistency and have had more time to develop an identity on the court. McDermott has a strong basketball identity; he is a scoring machine! He's averaging 24.8 points a game while shooting a remarkable 50.2% from the field, 44% from 3-point range. Doug is responsible for more than 30% of Creighton's offense and takes over 29% of Creighton's shots. Creighton runs their offense through Doug McDermott.

Joel Embiid's identity is in the developmental stage. As the season has progressed, Embiid has transformed from a bench player to a starter. As his game experience progresses, he is gaining identity as both a shot blocker and solid defender while also becoming an efficient offensive threat. His FG% is a staggering 67.9%. Embiid is averaging 11.1 points per game. He leads the team in blocks at 50, and is steadily increasing the amount of blocks he is making per game.

Andrew Wiggin's identity is also in the developmental stage. When he came to Kansas, his offensive prowess in high school projected his status to the top of college basketball as a freshman. Andrew is not only adjusting to D1 basketball, he is adjusting to Bill Self basketball. Self's game is defense, and Andrew has focused much of his efforts on the defensive side of the ball. Andrew has become a solid lock down defender. When Kansas needs to stop a single opponent from scoring, typically the assignment shifts to Andrew, and he is proving to be capable of stopping all kinds of scorers. Andrew is still trying to figure out how to reach a high level of effectiveness on offense. Still, as a freshman, he has a 43.9FG% and is averaging 15.2 points per game.

When comparing these three players on offense, as of this date, Doug McDermott is the clear winner and there is a long distance between these three players. But statistics don't explain everything. Creighton's offense is built around creating scoring opportunities for Doug. Their offense is tuned to perfection with on and off ball screens freeing Doug to do his thing. Kansas has one of the youngest teams in college basketball, so it is incapable of running at the same level of perfection as Creighton's. Kansas' offense is not built around one player, so fine-tuning to free up Andrew or Joel is not in the cards. The Kansas offense is being built to support more of a team offense, and you can go to the stat page to compare it with Creighton to realize that. It takes adding both Joel and Andrew's points per game to reach one-third of Kansas' total offense. So in many ways, it is not a fair comparison to pit Doug's offense against Joel's and Andrew's without noting the strategy of both team's offense. Doug's offense is more important to his team's success because they've structured it that way. That is further evidenced when comparing assist statistics. Doug averages about one-third more assists than Andrew and Joel, but he also possesses the ball far more on offensive possessions. Creighton plays their offense through Doug. However... when you factor in equal PT for Joel (to match Doug's PT), Joel matches Doug's assist while possessing the ball for probably half the time Doug has it.

I was unable to read Gasaway's story in it's entirety, but I'll assume his focus was on offense, because when you start looking at defensive stats, the advantage of McDermott's game suddenly dissolves. When comparing steals, Doug is in last place at only 6 steals in 19 games. Kansas has played one less game, but Andrew has 17 steals and Joel has 16. Doug is a post player so we have to compare blocked shots. Doug has only 3 blocks this season, compare that with Joel's 50 and Andrew's 16 (and Andrew is a guard). Remember, Kansas has played one less game... another important fact; Joel has averaged 9 less minutes a game than both Andrew and Doug.

In the rebounding department, Joel leads with 7.4 followed by Doug at 7.1 and Andrew at 6.1. What has to be noted is Joel's fewer minutes. If you factor in added minutes to equal both Andrew's and Doug's minutes, Joel suddenly averages 10.3 RPG. While we are adjusting for minutes we need to look at all the stats; Joel suddenly averages 15.5 PPG, with 70 blocks and 22 steals!

One last thing to consider, we are only at mid-season. Doug is a senior, and we should expect that his growth potential has leveled off. His upside is limited because he has already largely maximized his college game by tweaking it for 4 years. Andrew and Joel are freshmen who are just going through their first tweaks at the D1 level. We should expect more improvement from their games moving forward this year. And if we only go off of the improvements made recently, we should expect sizable gains moving forward.

So when taking a broader look at these 3 players, I'd rate them like this:

Doug McDermott means the most to his team and will remain with this edge over Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid throughout the year. Kansas has more talent and has not focused their offense around just one player. Consider the structure of these two teams and Doug will always win this category because it is built into the philosophy of Creighton.

The ranking of top player today (mid-season) I'd give a slight edge to Joel Embiid, with Doug McDermott close behind, followed by Andrew Wiggins closely behind Doug. Doug is an excellent offensive player and Creighton has maximized his value by building their structure around him, but take him out of that advantage and his value as a player is diminished below Joel, especially because he doesn't have much of an impact on the defensive side of the ball. And on offense, imagine if Kansas can take advantage of Joel's remarkable 67.9 FG% by making Joel a bigger part of Kansas' offense? If Kansas starts weighing Joel's offense only at half of the importance Creighton gives to Doug, Joel's offensive stats will skyrocket to showcase his value on offense far over every current D1 player!

Moving forward, I would project both Joel and Andrew to surpass Doug because both Kansas players contribute well on both sides of the ball, and they do it without a team structure built around promoting their talents individually. Bill Self is likely to tweak his offense to better take advantage of both players' strengths which will enhance their statistics. Both Kansas players are bound to improve their fundamentals as they gain more experience, taking away the one big advantage Doug has possessed up until now.

One last thing, lets not forget the comparison of SOS's between Creighton and Kansas up until now. Kansas is #1 while Creighton is #25 (ESPN). Weigh that in to these comparisons and it further illustrates where these players rank against each other. Creighton's schedule is tough, but a far distance from the hardest schedule in America!

Imagine it is late March, and all D1 coaches are polled across America to pick their starting 5 from every player currently in college basketball. I believe this may be the best way to decide where the top players rank within the college game and at the right time of year to assess the performance of each player for the year.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs BU - Jan 20 β€’ Jan 22, 2014 07:13 PM

@JRyman -

Gottlieb has been more problematic for CBS than they had anticipated. CBS has been taking a PR hit on Gottlieb, even on their own website blogs.

I'm not certain CBS will renew Gottlieb's contract or might just give him a pay-out and the boot. I've been trying to find the details of his multi-year contract with CBS...

http://www.cbscorporation.com/news-article.php?id=893 β†— β†—

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/9110248/cbs-doug-gottlieb-sorry-white-man-perspective-line β†— β†—

Gottlieb had made such a positive impression on CBS before bringing him on, and CBS failed to to properly vet Gottlieb's past. Part of their original intent was to position him towards the top on their March Madness broadcasts.

Is it really that hard to find men or women with solid college basketball knowledge and also possess microphone skills? (and without a background in credit card theft and smart enough to not piss off most of America when opening his/her mouth with race blurbs or biased commentary!)

I can think of at least 20 or so people on this website who can compete on the knowledge aspects and all 20 or so possess a respectful decorum while discussing basketball.

I'd like to be able to respond directly under someone else's post... like what we had at KUSports.

Is that working now? I did notice a difference when I hit the reply button directly beside jaybate's button, versus below.

@justanotherfan -

Am I the only one that thought Villanova received a bit of karma payback for hitting that game-winning prayer shot against us? I couldn't help but snicker at their complete beat down from Creighton. I just hope we don't run into any team shooting like that!

Self Supports Shockers Potential #1 Seeding... β€’ Jan 22, 2014 03:31 PM

I'd love to see Wichita State match-up with Kentucky. It would make for an interesting game. Not sure Kentucky could handle a team capable of executing like the Shockers can.

Self Supports Shockers Potential #1 Seeding... β€’ Jan 21, 2014 09:58 PM

Kansas coach, Bill Self, believes Wichita State University deserves a #1 seeding in the upcoming NCAA Tournament if the Shockers can go undefeated:

Some Worst Case Scenarios for College Basketball β€’ Jan 21, 2014 08:36 PM

~Doug Gottlieb finally comes to the realization of the mistake he made back on February 22, 1999, during the Oklahoma State / Kansas game.

During an Oklahoma State timeout, Gottlieb reversed his shorts because they were put on backwards, but he recently realized that it was his life that was put on backwards and needed to be reversed.

Its the Free Throws, Stupid! β€’ Jan 21, 2014 08:21 PM

Right on, @HighEliteMajor !

Drew just doesn't have a great basketball mind. He doesn't know how to look at two teams and figure out the right kind of plan to win. Or if he has something working but the game changes, he doesn't know how to react off the change.

Baylor should have been in this game right down to the wire.

Baylor's offense struggled in the second half, mostly because they were challenged tighter on 3s. Where did the defense come from? A little bit from several players, but mostly from Wiggins. He definitely is our best perimeter defender. That is no secret to anyone.

So Wiggins did a great job shutting down Heslip. From that point forward the game's outcome was already determined unless Drew made changes.

What Drew should have done was put more emphasis on Chery. Chery had already shown he could blow right by Tharpe. Why didn't he take over in the second half? Chery was great at penetrating and then feeding for assists, and in the process, helping draw fouls.

Since Self's big move was to match up Wiggins on Heslip, that created even a better opportunity for Chery to penetrate because Heslip could keep Wiggins' weak side help away from Chery.

Anytime an opportunity is taken away in one area, another opportunity opens up somewhere else. I don't think Drew understands that reality in basketball. Baylor has way too many weapons to squander by not adjusting to changes in the game. This has been the biggest weakness in Drew since Day 1 in the Big 12.

Andrew's New Mentor; Kobe Bryant β€’ Jan 21, 2014 05:59 PM

I caught the following post today and want to offer up some new ideas:

@Blown - "Wiggins is just a Gorillas Grip on the ball away from finishing those drives. Here to hoping Hudy has a hand strengthener in her fantastic arsenal"

I think Andrew needs to reexamine his game. I'd like to sit in a video room with him and go over file footage of Kobe Bryant's NBA career. This is the player that Andrew needs to model his game after.

Bryant is 6'6" and 205 lbs... almost identical to Wiggins. He came into the league with a similar attitude as Andrew has now; you gotta finish at the rim... except the "Black Mamba" played a lot more physical basketball than Andrew and excelled by mastering the skill of scoring after contact by protecting the ball and creating enough space to score.

However, Bryant didn't achieve the majority of his 30,000+ NBA points at the rim. Over time, Bryant realized how to use his skills to create scoring space all over the court. He seemed to even be more lethal when guarded closely, because his moves flow with perfection from the repetitions he worked on in practice.

Since Andrew attempts to finish hard almost every time he dribbles the ball, his weaknesses have become obvious to fans and opposing team scouts. Andrew is not a skilled dribbler, especially in traffic. Andrew has limited moves to the basket, mostly a spin move. Andrew is predictable when trying to finish. All of his weaknesses have been highlighted now, even being pointed out by game commentators, and have made it much harder for Andrew to be successful at finishing because everyone knows what he is going to do next.

Andrew needs to step back and take a hard look at his strategy. Andrew needs to follow in the path of Kobe Bryant.

In last night's victory over Baylor, Andrew did show a little bit of what he should be doing on a regular basis. As the game was winding down, Andrew made a few easy moves that quickly helped him rack up a few easy points. First, he had an easy pull up jumper that was so smooth it looked like the rim had a high-powered vacuum sucking the ball in. The second move he went around his man, but instead of heading to the goal, he went sideways for a baby jumper at the free throw line area. He didn't make the shot, but was fouled and sent back to the line. What made this play stand out was Andrew clearly thought ahead to what he wanted to do, and he did it. If he makes this a habit... he can quickly shoot his way to the top of college basketball.

It will take many years before Andrew's game can reach the skill level of Kobe's game. But he does have the potential to match and potentially surpass the man that should be his mentor moving forward.

If Kobe would advise Andrew now, he'd tell him, "look for your shots all over the floor. Think ahead with a plan on where to score next, but know it can change spontaneously. Finish at the rim only when it's there. Do this and you'll have the formula to score 30,000+ points at the next level and will (hopefully) have the good health to stay around long enough to accomplish it!"

Jan 20: Post-game Roundup - KU vs Baylor β€’ Jan 21, 2014 03:40 PM

This was a typical KU / BU game in recent years with Self and Drew. The game stays close until one coach makes the right adjustments that make the difference in the game, while the other coach fails to adjust to compensate.

Bill made several adjustments, one being to put Wiggins on Heslip, shutting down his 3 and also contributing to challenge 3s from others.

Baylor didn't have a legitimate plan to win this game. They should have taken an approach of attacking the post with their size, hoping to draw Kansas into foul trouble, AND THEN kick to the perimeter for the 3s. It was a typical Scott Drew game lacking coherency.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs BU - Jan 20 β€’ Jan 21, 2014 03:32 PM

I think we can make this FLOOR BURN AWARD short and sweet:

Wayne Selden

In case anyone on the planet hasn't seen Wayne's sudden desire to leave the Baylor game and join the third row to steal some popcorn:

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=10325770 β†— β†—

It was good enough to land Wayne the #1 spot on Sportscenter.

The play, combined with Joel Embiid's baby hook score, pushed the Kansas lead to 9 and they never looked back after that.

Bill Self hadn't shown that much excitement since April 7, 2008!

But Wayne wasn't finished showing his hustle... he wanted to make sure he'd win the FLOOR BURN AWARD again by sliding across the hardwood for another loose ball in the final moments, after the game was already in hand. That may be even more impressive than his dive into the crowd; Wayne's effort shown at the end of 40 minutes!

Kudos to Tarik Black for continuing to give up his body drawing charges!

Conference Season Tally:

Wayne Selden 2

Frank Mason 1

Andrew Wiggins 1

Joel Embiid 1

Naadir Tharpe 1

Tarik Black 1

Just so we nail one more 3....

Jan 19: Big 12 and the hard road ahead β€’ Jan 20, 2014 09:48 PM

Tonight better not be a let down because we let down in the second half of OSU on Saturday! Self better have verbally drilled them for easing up on OSU!

Ellis and Wiggins better bring some game tonight or they will both be watching most of it from the pine!

Baylor Intel Estimate β€’ Jan 20, 2014 09:42 PM

I see this game coming down to coaching (as it always does, especially against Drew).

The winning team is the one who can adjust midstream to the best punch from the other side.

Self usually out-coaches Drew.

I see this game as one that could come down to the wire (like OSU) or we completely blow them out of the water because we do something they don't seem to be able to adjust to.

Match-ups I'll be watching closely... Perry Ellis vs Cory Jefferson. it's time for Perry to show he can play with the big boys. Cory Jefferson is the key player for Baylor. He's the type of physical specimen that gives Perry fits.

Other key match-up.. Naadir Tharpe against Kenny Chery. I'm hopeful Naa will bring his best game, and if he does then Kenny doesn't stand a chance... mostly because Tharpe has received much better coaching than Chery has.

I'm keeping my prediction that we hand Baylor a big time beat down!

Pssss.... there is a secret microphone planted on Drew's necktie. Not for the sake of stealing his strategy.. but for listening to him scream after his team gets slammed again in Lawrence!

I will be completely surprised if we don't kick Baylor's backside all the way back to Baylor tomorrow!

Baylor is playing typical Drewball right now... disorganized and just waiting for a team with some energy and desire to mash to give them a beat down!

Best Win All Season! β€’ Jan 20, 2014 12:08 AM

That was the best win we've had this season, and I'll explain why:

  1. The first half was the best basketball we've played all year. We played well on both sides of the court, and we were rewarded for it with a hefty half time lead. Now we know what to do.... we need to play that kind of basketball for 40 minutes!

  2. The second half represented the biggest negative change we've gone through in any single game this year. Never had we gone from playing that well to playing that bad. For whatever lessons we take from the first half on how to execute, we should learn twice as many lessons from the second half on what it takes to blow a huge lead.

  3. Many of our guys who needed to play well to help their confidence, did so, and were all vital in helping us hold on to this victory; Embiid, Black, Traylor, Tharpe, Greene, Mason...

  4. Many of our guys who still need to mature their games had bad games: Ellis, Wiggins, Selden... and just for his TOs... Tharpe.

  5. Now we know that every single team we play, from here on out, is going to pull plenty of flops... especially if they think they can draw a flagrant1 or flagrant2, or they can draw a foul on Embiid. Now we know this and now we know that we can play through such nonsense and still win!

  6. We won this game... so, technically, it counts in the win column. But, for all intense purposes (like for butt-chewings from Self), we lost this game! This win was one of the few wins where our guys should actually pick up some humility from winning.

  7. We snagged this win away from what may be the second-best team in our conference. That always makes it a big win!

I would love to sit in on the first practice after this game! I'd be the guy sitting there with ear plugs and a big smile!

I can't think of a better outcome for helping this team move forward than what happened on Saturday. These are the kinds of games that coaches pray for; a win that feels like a loss!

Rock Chalk! And I hope this translates into a total beat down tomorrow against Baylor!

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs OSU - Jan 18 β€’ Jan 19, 2014 11:44 PM

This was a tough game to pick a Jayhawk for floor burns, because this game was played above the knees. This was a tough game to pick a hustle player because the first half provided plenty of it, and the second have provided little.

If consistency is the name of the game, then Joel Embiid deserves a mention. His stats crept towards a triple-double, an achievement few players have reached. 13 points, 11 rebounds, 8 blocks and 1 steal... how could we ask for anything more from our center!

If inspiration is the name of the game, then Tarik Black is hands down the winner of this award! Tarik brought plenty of energy with him off the bench, along with the talent to thrash what little interior OSU had. Tarik went for 8 points, 2 rebounds and 1 block in just 9 inspired minutes of play. The only thing holding back Tarik in this game was the impressive play of the man who has taken his place, Joel Embiid.

If surprise is the name of the game, Jamari Traylor deserves his moment in the spotlight! Jamari brings his own brand of energy with him off the bench, along with surprise play, usually just when we need it most. Jamari scored 9 points, 3 rebounds and 1 block in 18 minutes of play.

All of these guys deserve plenty of credit for contributing to this win. One more would be Naadir Tharpe, who continues to burn the nets... this time, a team-high 21 points off of 7-of-8 shooting. Tharpe contributed more than points... he also lead the team with 6 assists and 3 steals. From reading up to this point you may ask, "why doesn't Tharpe win this award?" Because Tharpe also had a team-leading 6 turnovers! He has to realize how important it is to take care of the ball. So much of the positive he brought to this game he negated with turnovers.

The man who takes the FLOOR BURN AWARD for this game scored only 6 points, and missed a couple of crucial free throws down the stretch. He is one of the shortest guys on our team, but when we needed him most, he played some tall basketball!

Frank Mason is the winner of the FLOOR BURN AWARD in this game! Frank got his hand on the ball, preventing two possible scores, within the last minute of the game. When the game was on the line, Frank played big... slapping the ball loose to prevent a score within the last minute, and slapping the ball loose on Le'Bryan Nash's winning last-second 3-point shot!

How many times have we seen this play out before? The most recent, and notable, was last year in March against Michigan. Our boys come and play over 39 minutes of inspired basketball, only to flounder in the final moments... giving up a last-second jump shot to lose. 39 minutes of building stats that, in the end, go only towards building a loss.

We can hustle for 39 minutes (we didn't this time, but I'm making a point) but if we go soft at the end, we typically take another loss, and with the loss comes 39 prior minutes that we might as well played soft.

The game is 40 minutes long. Right now, I'm only sure that Frank Mason understands that fact!

Conference Season Tally:

Frank Mason 1

Andrew Wiggins 1

Joel Embiid 1

Naadir Tharpe 1

Tarik Black 1

Wayne Selden 1

It's time to thump OSU... unless we get into extreme foul trouble!

Watch the fouls today, boys!

Inside the Andrew Wiggins Spotlight: Kansas Star Freshman Hitting His Stride β†—

I'm born and raised in Kansas, but left many moons ago to see if the grass was greener on the other side... in several countries.

I discovered some places have greener grass, some have brown grass... and none of that related to the enjoyment of my life. "Home is where you lay your head." Consequently, I now live in Pillow, Kansas... 4 miles west of Bedspread, Kansas.

I've always smiled through all the golden waving wheat in Kansas every June.... I never try to convince anyone to come here and live because I like peace and quiet! Things haven't changed so much here (compared to other places)... and that drives some people crazy. I like the consistency... and not having my roots pulled on constantly because of living in a place that feels the need to change every 15 minutes.

If you like it here, too... please, please.... keep it to yourselves. We don't want Kansas to become the next fad place for people to move to.

@wissoxfan83 - Physics question: Is a basketball heavier or lighter at sea level versus the 1,020 ft elevation of Lawrence? My guess is it's the same weight, but travels through air lighter in the Superdome.

I have the perfect self-portrait in front of the Superdome, decades before the hurricane. I'm standing on top a car that had been torched right outside the Dome. It was an abandoned fusion of metal and no one seemed to care that it was there. To be honest, it seemed to fit into the environment... at the time, that area felt like scenery out of Mad Max.

@jaybate - Just a question or two: How big is that magic hat you continue to pull rabbits from? Do the rabbits come out one at a time, or is it an explosion of rabbit fur particles and flesh?

Bravo!

@JRyman - It gets worse (if you can believe it)...

Check out Doug's 'mea culpa' where he goes into detail about how he messed up at Notre Dame... then... he pulls in Johnny Manziel's alleged autograph-signing scandal and puts it on the same justice scales as his credit card thefts.

Needless to say... many people in the comments were none to appreciative of Doug's confessional moment and desire to comparatively weigh sledge hammers to feathers.

The spot on aspect of this webpage is the fact that it happened on CBS Sports website. Let corporate absorb the PR issue on Doug. You can bet CBS Sports is wondering what they got themselves into. Maybe someone in HR will have their head stuck on a stick for not vetting Doug properly.

@wissoxfan83 - I envy you. That must be quite the cultural experience. I've always been intrigued with that State.... a collision of so many cultures together.

@Kip_McSmithers - That explains why he had his shorts on backwards... he had them stuffed with KU credit cards.

He should run for political office. He already has a proven track record of getting his hands on the people's purse strings!

@REHawk - Amazing to see so much money thrown around amateur sports! ;)

Jan 17 Headlines: The World According to Tharpe β€’ Jan 17, 2014 03:49 PM

I've become curious about the @jaybate comment that Adidas doesn't want both Embiid and Wiggins to declare in the same year. If Wiggins keeps lifting his game, and Embiid returns... good shot for Wiggins to go #1 in the draft. And an excellent chance for Embiid next year.

Hard to turn away from these "conspiracy theories" when considering the amount of money involved. I know these "amateur athletes" aren't allowed agency during college, but who is to say it takes agency to sign a shoe contract to go in effect once an athlete leaves college. Would that be illegal under NCAA rules? I don't see how they could uphold something like that in a court of law.

@RockChalkinTexas -

I wonder if our 9-straight has something to do with that. I think it is a long enough streak that we've started to condition fans from other schools to just expect not being champs. When fans think they won't be champs it weens out a chunk of attendance in most places.

And in some places.... players, coaches and admin build up their chances and draw crowds in. When they fail again, many fans had their expectations dashed (again) and they lose motivation to attend games.

We definitely have a luxurious situation at Kansas!

Just my opinion....

@Shanghai_Hawk - Only theories abound. It seems something will be reveled soon because the spotlight will brighten if he continues to stay MIA.

@jaybate - I can see the "XTReme Cheap Shot" taking place on Embiid... another attempt to get him to retaliate and suffer the consequences.

Loved the write-up on Tharpe, and how he goes around juicing up the troops before each game now.

@Blown - Great point, and excellent quote!

I've been wanting this for a long time.

For some reason I think we are going to meet in March...

This thing has become a fish out of water, rotting from the head. Now Weber wants to play the Shocks.

Bring'em on!

Wow... suddenly all the confessions...

Everyone with a confession has to meet over at Jaybate's posting on basketball lent. Read his post 3 times and say 100 "Hail Marys" before Saturday's tip-off.

I'll have to do the same, because I broke my basketball fast early.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee..." X 100...

I was walking home, and a bird whispered into my ear. I thought it was a bird, but it was my wife pointing to a basketball stuck in a tree, and demanded me to retrieve the ball.

Was this a sign? Was this woman really my wife, or was she Eve in disguise? How do I know that is really a basketball up there? Could it be an apple?

I ran inside and let the situation stay as it was. I am now pondering if basketball could be part of "original sin?" It seems to qualify, because I can drown my soul into almost any game on TV. I can't think of a bigger distraction in my life than basketball.

Woe is me.

I'll go now... pontificating and fasting from all basketball... surely I can stay away from this sin of the flesh (and mind)... at least until this evening, when several good games suddenly appear on my widescreen.

It is 12:36pm, CST. I wonder how long I can go from posting in here or flipping on Sportscenter or scan through my cable guide looking for games to DVR....

Woe is me...

If you desire to some day become the next great sportswriter, then follow the pack who are up there now. They copied their predictive skills from successful weathermen, realizing it is best to let the weather happen first, then report what happened in a predictive style, because none of us are capable of knowing what has happened outside without being told by the geniuses who possess this special gift.

I had no idea that Embiid had potential. Gosh... where has he been hiding? And Wiggins may not be the #1 pick in the draft? Noooooo...

Kansas has a shot at another National Championship? What kind of mushrooms have these guys been eating?! Shitake?

What's next? Maybe Selden should stay in school another year?

I wish I could be a top sportswriter someday, but unfortunately, I don't have the extra 10 minutes necessary to research what's going on in college basketball to keep current!

@Blown - Fortunately, you've made it back to us! I bet few (if any) can appreciate KU more than you!

@Blown - you've been watching too many Bud Light superstition ads! I hope you go... and I hope you aren't missing games hanging out in your dingy basement or playing lousy songs on the jukebox or eating quinoa burgers or having a pathetic fan come to watch at your home.

Trust me... it's only an ad!

As long as you make sure and wear your lucky Jayhawk t-shirt and cross your fingers during FTs... we'll be fine! Maybe stop by a fast food joint and grab a few packets of salt. Once in a while, if you break one open and toss it over your shoulder, our luck will turn around! Watch for the cement seams in the sidewalk concrete as you approach AFH and avoid stepping on cracks!

These are the only tricks that work... and all the other stuff is just superstition!

Is the OSU game a "trap game?" β€’ Jan 16, 2014 04:49 PM

@DinarHawk -

"As for the OSU game, they do not have a post presence whatsoever."

We've fallen into this trap I don't know how many times. In recent Jayhawk history, our bigs do better against some form of big presence by our opponents... we typically don't do that well against super bigs that are athletic.. but we have often had problems with little teams.

It's all in the scouting and preparation for the game. Our bigs have to bait the defenders into not giving up the lob ball over them for easy scores. It's sort of like in football... establish the run and then go to the air. Little teams usually have quicker feet and lower centers of gravity. That gives them capabilities to hedge passing into the post. We can largely take that away by reducing their hedges after lobbing over them a few times.

That means we practice this ahead of game time and take 6'6" or so guys and have them defend the post against our bigs while our bigs learn how to position for the lob, and our perimeter players learn how to make the right kind of lob over the defense. It's a lot tougher than it looks when the defenders are athletic and leapers. We never seem to master this aspect. We just work on the backdoor lobs... a totally different play.

I've always been bothered by the games where we play small teams and we don't dominate them in the post.

This is a game where we really need to assess our strengths and go after match-ups where we have a lopsided advantage!

Scott Drew, meet Tubby Smith. β€’ Jan 16, 2014 04:39 PM

I just hope all of this doesn't get into our team's head... that we can go on cruise control now. I've been liking our low ranking and comments about us being over-rated. It is hard to get that kind of stimuli anywhere else for these young guys.

Self said the team personality is too mellow. I'm more concerned about that aspect than I am about any team we play.

We all know on our best day no one can handle us. The challenge is to come out every game and have another best day!

Is the OSU game a "trap game?" β€’ Jan 16, 2014 04:34 PM

@KUSTEVE - I'm not really seeing this as a trap game either.... I think the guys have been learning so much basketball in recent weeks that they are anxious to get out there and erase the lingering smell of that SDSU loss.
