Never a doubt! On Wisconsin!
I generally have grown up with a hatred of all things ND. Not so with WSU. I don't have any feelings for them either. So I guess I like ND only because I think they'd have a better chance of knocking off the team we ALL hate!
But it wouldn't be empty if we played them.
@approxinfinity They're having some fun. Hopefully not too much fun!
Since we're voting, I like @Wigs2 logic. Let's play them again and misery too. I like the rivalry games, much more interesting to me than going to Philly to play Temple in a half empty gym for example.
@BeddieKU23 I heard it on PTI. They were just speculating like the rest of us, but he appears to be considering it more seriously this time.
So now I'm reading that Cal is interested in the NBA again. Could that change the landscape of the college game again?
Remember how we waited for Tyshawn to grow up his first two, even three years? And when he finally 'matured' he nearly won us a championship. Hopefully Greene gets us to that point next year or his last as one of America's best shooters.
Part of that data that makes Self look bad is the abundant #1 seeds. That means, while having a very successful regular season and earning the 1, any loss before the FF is considered a failure. It's kind of unfair, but it's the way it is. I don't think for example, in 2013 when we lost in the sweet 16 to a team that played for the championship (and got screwed by the officials in my opinion!) as a failure. Sure we blew a big lead, but we blew a lead to a team good enough to almost good enough to win it all.
Same goes in 1997. We lost to the champion. We were the #1 seed, but by golly, Arizona turned out to be very good. No shame there either, although it was a painful loss indeed.
I still try to read all of the box scores of former Jayhawks.
The Morrises are getting better seemingly every game, and most encouraging is that Marcus seems to be catching up to 'Kieff in minutes played and production.
Wiggins is ROY I think,
Aldrich gets some PT with the woeful knicks.
Withey is playing infrequently.
Arthur gets some decent minutes with the playoff bound Nuggets.
Hinrich is the old man of the bulls and still gives some good minutes.
Rush is on a playoff team watching from the bench.
Chalmers is at career highs last I checked for scoring since the King left.
Tarik is getting inconsistent minutes with the Fakers.
BMac is consistently good, not great.
Pierce fading into the hall with the Bullets...er Wizards. Gooden gets decent minutes one game and good production and then nothing the next.
Collison gets 10-20 minutes every game and gets few points or boards since Westbrook is hoarding all of those in his incredible run of triple doubles.
I think I got them all. I wish the names of Simien, Langford, Miles, Collins and Jackson were included in my report.
Is this the first college team to do this? They'll be competing against countries all star teams if I'm correct. In some ways this sounds a little risky in that the chance of injury is there. A season ending injury in July is pretty devastating as there's no way to replace someone at that time.
I just got done reading this. Kind of interesting and it supports what some are saying because Bill Self doesn't show up on this particular parameter.
Of course it calls Izzo the best as you can see, but he has one ring and others on the list have more so it's just one way of looking at it.
No need to apologize. I should apologize! I like the Badgers and whenever someone mentions them I feel like I need to respond which I really don't need to however! Thanks for supporting the Badgers though!
Several things to consider about our team.
We are performing at about our historical average right now. That is about 1.5 FF's per decade. I'd like to think we'll be back again this decade.
Self seems to rise to the occasion in election years. 2000, 2004 in the elite 8, once with Tulsa. 2008 and 2012 played the last game of the season! The next election year is next year.
And finally, you wrote "Wisconsin. Went to the Final 4 last year for the first time in over a decade. They live to underachieve in the tournament." Let me set everyone straight. While UW's final four resume is lacking, they have not underachieved. They have played to their seed almost every year in the tourney during the Bo Ryan years. You can look it up. In fact their 2000 FF was as a 8 seed!
I love Kansas basketball and I hate KUBuckets. How many times have I fallen behind on work either at work or at home because I'm reading/responding to all kinds of theories out there.
Someone said we're spoiled. Here's how spoiled we are. Since I came to KU in 1985, and actually, I think if I had enrolled a year earlier in 1984, we'd have a string of ....calculating....calculating... 29 NCAA tournaments out of 30 possible. And the one time we missed, we were all so giddy over 1988 we barely noticed not making it!
The other night as I watched my second love the announcer said Oregon has danced 13 times in their entire history! They actually won the first official NCAA tournament in 1939. I think Duke can write the same about their success since 1984 and UNC as well. No one else can. We've got it good, uh, great as KU fans.
@VoyagingJayhawk, keep posting! We need more!
I guess we'll ever know.
@drgnslayr When I was typing your name to tag you in my post above, the best KUBuckets user name ever popped up just below yours: @DrJHawk What a great name!! How much are you willing to sell your user name? I've never seen you here, but my goodness, that's a great name. I wish I'd thought of it!!
I agree 101% @drgnslayr. This sight is awesome.
Here's some things we can talk about during the long offseason.
What sport would we all be talking about if college basketball didn't exist?
If I could be a basketball, what court would I like to be bouncing on?
What's my favorite piece of Jayhawk themed clothing?
What KUbuckets poster annoys us the most? Ooooh, that could be fun!
What if JoJo wasn't ruled to be on the line?
What KU players do we wish were OAD's?
Match the movie with the Jayhawk season.
If college basketball were food would we all be obese?
Why do referees and prison inmates wear striped shirts?
If Kansas basketball was a religion who would be our deity and who would be the devil?
What do we like about Missouri? This would be a short discussion.
What if James Naismith had nailed a hula hoop up on a tree instead of a peach basket?
If someone gave us 1000 dollars to buy a time machine which would magically send us back to any KU game we wanted, which game would it be?
Could I, in my prime, have managed to get a shot off if I was on the floor in a KU game?
If movies were made about KU coaches, who would play each coach?
So there you go bucketeers, keep this list handy for the long days of summer when there's nothing else to talk about!
I don't know what we were writing in 2006 on this same week. For the second straight year we had been defeated by one of the Killer B's. We were a national laughingstock. We were wearing paper bags over our heads at KU games. We just flat out stunk up the place.
Fast forward to 2008. You know how this story ends.
Fast forward to 2010. Northern Iowa, we got Farmoushked. We were embarrassments once again.
Fast forward to 2012 We know how this story ends.
Next year, another election year (totally irrelevant, but we like to look for patterns) 1988 was an election year. 1952 was an election year. I vote for another big year for KU hoops next election year.
But more seriously than the dumb election year hypothesis is the fact that we've been down before in serious ways and rebounded nicely. The pieces are there for a very solid team next year. I'm hoping that somehow Cliff is available. I'm hoping, probably vainly, that Kelly stays. Of course Perry needs to stay, although he could leave too.
I'd love to see college hoops as in the early 1980's when a team like UNC had James Worthy, Sam Perkins, and MJ on the same team as experienced players, and they were challenged by other schools with equal talent. This was only possible because they stayed around for at least 3 years.
I wish I had believed my post after the Temple game after I wrote "I'm done". Would have saved a lot of frustration.
I'm not sure why this team bothered me more than other teams that fell short but I'll try.
A lack of dominant wins. Every once in a while it's nice just to watch the boys roll. It didn't happen all year except with a couple of the preseason/early season 'practice' games.
Out of control plays. Yesterday Traylor corralled a loose ball after we missed a shot. Before he stops a second to think, he throws the ball to what he thinks is an open guy. Of course it misses the mark and we lose another possession. We made so many of these types of plays yesterday and really all season. Ball security was not valued this season. That needs to change.
Our players are not passionate. Earlier in the season Oubre got T-d up for something stupid. He intentionally bumped an opponent, might have been OK State. I didn't like it, but it was a rare instance this year. The Morris twins were tough and didn't let teams push us around. We don't seem to have that toughness. @Jaybate 1.0 made note of it yesterday when someone elbowed Perry in the nose. We shouldn't have taken that.
I really don't know much about coaching except that I coached a 5th grade team to a league championship once. Bill Self had his worst year coaching at KU in my very limited opinion. The lack of PT for Mickelson stands out to me, particularly after Cliff left. We've had two subpar years in a row, last year was not any better in my mind, and it's worrisome to me that he peaked in 2008, and we'll not reach that height again, similar to Izzo who seemed destined to many more rings but really hasn't come close since winning in 2000.
The assistant coaches are more recruiters than coaches. Do we miss Danny? Sure seemed like it yesterday when a shorter team still dominated our team.
Finally a few of the players are to blame, for lack of a better word:
Selden is as enigmatic of any Jayhawk I can remember.
Greene, a head case who should be a headliner on this team, but instead may not ever play significant minutes at KU.
Hoping for a nice off season with hope for a return to our normal dominance.
I just read that Barkley at the half mentioned Alexander was playing really well today!
No but he has 11 boards on Yahoo
Remember the alamodome
I think wichita was underseeded
Beddie too bad you missed the end of the Memphis game.
It's not over, but I don't know how we're going to comeback. We were beating them by 8 with 24 points 2 hours ago and now we have 32 points
You're friends with a fiend?
If someone did that to Frank on the streets, they'd be cuffing him right now.
This just wasn't our year since the Cliff thing and injuries piled up
Just put my shirt back on. We scored immediately
What did Selden do there? Breath on him?
@Bwag I still have my championship tank top from that year. I don't wear it though, but my son does!
Remember Richard Simmons? He's my fashion role model.
Who says I'm wearing them?
I'm watching pavarotti on PBS right now. He looks like he might be Marshalls daddy
It's warm in my living room so I took off my KU tshirt. We've sucked ever since then.
Sometimes i hate this team. Sorry, I do. They drive me drove.
They're desperate for a win against us.
Brooks, I'm salivating, and Wayne too
We're going to enjoy devante for the next three years.
Webber is going to call timeout sometime tonight
Frank the Tank plays later!
Eric, Frank the mini Tank
Are these the same refs from the MSU-VA game? They made some horrible calls especially calling fouls on clean blocks.
Jnew just said BIll self has said 3 times "what are you doing?" after 3 point attempts.
I'm risking doom by skipping church tonight for this game, but I'm sure some WSU fans are doing the same so it probably all evens out.
I just posted this somewhere else, but since some of you may not have seen it:
Since it is Sunday, let us close our eyes, bow our heads and pray with me:
Bill Self is our shepherd we shall not want. He makes us to set down in blue seated arenas. He leads me to final fours, he restores our hope and guides us to conference championships. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of losses, we will fear no team for his plans will prevail. He prepares a table before us in the presence of the enemy. He anoints our trophy cases with wins, our trophy cases overflow. Surely greatness and victories will follow us all the days of the life because, you know, WE ARE KANSAS.
Amen.
(No harm, no malice!)
@Crimsonorblue22 What do you mean the biggest bs?
Can anyone currently living in Kansas tell us what the mood is in the state over this game? I would guess it's the most anticipated game since the '88 KU-Kstate elite 8 game. Is it high buzz? Are the people there all talking about it?
