I posted the same thing in a thread yesterday. What I like about it is that it reveals that we're just watching young men play games here. When the kid 'outed' himself he got high fives and congratulations. Brings the fun of the game back into it.
I actually hesitated writing this as I didn't want it to come across as offensive or even worse, blasphemous. What do you think? Does it cross the line?
I was led by the spirit, otherwise known as the Phog.
Since it is Sunday, let us close our eyes, bow our heads and pray with me:
Bill Self is our shepherd we shall not want. He makes us to set down in blue seated arenas. He leads me to final fours, he restores our hope and guides us to conference championships.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of losses, we will fear no team for his plans will prevail. He prepares a table before us in the presence of the enemy. He anoints our trophy cases with wins, our trophy cases overflow. Surely greatness and victories will follow us all the days of the life because, you know, WE ARE KANSAS.
Amen.
(No harm, no malice!)
I know when prime time is, but don't they still basically have the same work schedules we have in central time? In other words doesn't work start at 7 or 8 for most people there? If so a 9 oclock start is too late. It would be for me.
You know what pisses me off about this schedule? A scheduled starting time of 7:40 PM on a Sunday night. Of course, that's 8:40 eastern time and you also know that these games as the day wears on start later than the scheduled time. So you're asking Maryland and WV fans who live in the east coast to have to start watching a game at almost 9 PM! It's not like the first two days of the tourney where just to fit everything in you have to start some games late. It's the weekend, there's no need for it.
Huggie mentioned this in a presser the other day and he's also pissed about it. Ironically, since he also has a rep for not having the best students, his biggest gripe is with the concept of student athletes who won't be alert and ready for class Monday morning.
If you look at todays schedule. One game at 11, one game at 1:30, our game at 4, and another starts at 5. The rest of the day are all kinds of games which overlap. Why not stagger starts starting at 11, 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Then fans can watch the ends of games, and have better choices of games to watch.
The NCAA did right by expanding the viewing options with TRu, TBS, TNT. No more griping about which game they decide to show and having to rely on the updated score in the top of the screen.
Nigel Hayes, besides being a very good basketball player, is a very funny dude. Look him up on youtube and his Nigel Burgundy videos that he did last year during the tourney.
@Lulufulu I hope they win it all too!
The double header in Omaha today is my dream doubleheader. If money were no object....
NC State survives the first round because LSU didn't make another basket for the last 10:12 of the game and also missed their final 6 FTS.
Now NC State is moving on to the sweet 16 by beating a #1 seed! Amazing really. It's what makes this tournament so much fun.
For the record I heard JNewells podcast the other day and he thought WSU would beat us too! Of course we could boycott him.
I really didn't want to start another thread so I'll put this here where people are reading currently. This is pretty funny, make sure you watch the video embedded in the article, that's the good part.
By the way we have a 2 game losing streak (at least in my memory) to MVC in the tourney, Bradley and then UNI. So there's no way we lose three in a row, right?
I also read something remarkable the other day. We've been a top 4 seed every year since 2001. That's 14 seasons of top 4 seeds. That's 14 straight years of being one of the 16 best teams in the country. That's 7 years longer than the next team on the list. In fact, as I recall, 24 of those 26 years had us as 4 seeds or better.
@wrwlumpy Thanks for the Wichita travelog. I am now informed about what a non-descript boring city it must be.
If the officials let WSU mug us like they did Indiana they will be much tougher to beat.
Not related to the KU-WSU game, but this headline won't surprise any of us.
@globaljaybird Believe me, it's evident in many walks of life here.
@VailHawk Meh, they're playing kind of disinterested tonight I think. They'll win I'm sure (if they don't do you know where I could buy some cyanide?) but these games are oftentimes kind of anticlimactic for #1 seeds, unless of course it's Holy Cross and KU, then it's avoiding eternal embarrassment!
Let's hope Franks last game as a sophomore is like Sherrons last game as a sophomore.
I really loved Sherron as a player. Like Frank he had some wrecklessness to him. He did have a last shot mentality that we haven't seen/needed really in the last couple of years.
I am pumped about the future guards here. A backcourt next year of Mason, Selden, and Graham just has me drooling at the prospect! If Oubre is part of it, even better. And if we can get Cliff back with Ellis and the others, wow, we're going to be top 3 in the country next year!
@Crimsonorblue22 Who?
Anyone know what time we'll be playing Sunday?
@Crimsonorblue22 No, not a writer, although I'd like to try it someday! The geography of basketball or something like that. Of course Kansas is the starting point
Oh yeah, forgot about that!! We got to get to that elite 8 against kentucky and then it will be a UW-KU final four!!
@cragarhawk Apparently this one kid who is scoring for them, Cameron is playing with a chip on his shoulder. He's from Racine but UW paid him no mind. I don't know anything about him.
@cragarhawk Their D is good enough, not sure it's good enough for Kentucky, but I think our offense is good enough.
Yes I teach. I just left a tough afternoon, I teach inner city kids and Friday afternoons has them restless, so I wasn't in the greatest mood, and then the ticket!
KOenig on Wisconsin #24 is a stud sophomore and KU recruited him. I think it was a foregone conclusion he was going to UW though.
@Crimsonorblue22 Louisiana doesn't put the amount on the ticket for some reason. This state is last in the country in education so they do a lot of dumb things here!
@cragarhawk Iowa surprised me tonight. I usually cheer for BIg 10 teams, but I really dislike them and have for a long time.
This team they're playing is hot too. Our D is not bo ryan like this year.
Been one of their strengths this year. Especially when you see 6'10'' Decker and 7' Kaminsky making them
41 in a school zone, before kiddos were out, and past the school in a semiresidential area, basically I had sped up a little too soon. Kind of a speed trap
Me too. I wish he'd have stayed.
Nice article on him on the NYT today or yesterday.
Have you seen them play this year?
My day can't be ruined, it was ruined by a speeding ticket earlier, so I can take anything now!
@Kip_McSmithers I did mine in about 5 minutes and it shows! I only did one bracket, I noticed the people winning have done multiple brackets.
5 coaches with KU ties move onto the 2nd round, and really should've been all 6 from the first round. Am I forgetting anyone?
Thanks for starting the game thread, but I was really looking forward to @wrwlumpy's excellent discussion starters on opposing universities! I've never been to WSU, which I've never really expected to be missing much to be honest, but I always enjoy his posts.
And yes, beat the tar out of em Sunday!
Kansas and Wisconsin both playing in Omaha today, how I wish I was an Omahan!
I like to stay away from bias theories generally, except for east coast bias, so what you wrote makes sense. Raise another banner for KU, we deserve it!
@JayHawkFanToo Most of those years the other conferences haven't had a lot more members. For a decade or so our conference had 12 which was more than the big 10, Pac 10, and I think more than the ACC? SEC too was a 12 member league.
@ParisHawk Do me a favor and don't cheer for Wisconsin tomorrow!
@tundrahok And people may forget that we played OU pretty close that season, both home and away.
I did a little digging, found a website called SportingCharts. (I hope my formatting works for here)
Here's their info since 1979:
Big 10: Final four appearances: 23 NC's 5 Runner ups 6
ACC: Final four appearances: 29 NC's 10 Runner ups 6
Big East Final four appearances: 20 NC's 6 Runner ups 5
Big 8/12 Final four appearances: 13 NC's 2 Runner ups 4
Pac 10 Final four appearances: 10 NC's 2 Runner ups 3
SEC Final four appearances: 20 NC's 6 Runner ups 3,
Of course if we broke it down by school, KU would be right near the top of the list which is all we really care about, right?!!
KU: Final four appearances: 8!! NC's 2!! Runner ups 3!!
Not going to break it down for the other big schools, but we're right up there.
Unfortunately, as much as we like to say the SEC sucks, it has produced more than our conference. Of course, some of that you can chalk up to a competitive Florida team.
Brilliant theory! You might be on to something here.
@HighEliteMajor A picture of me and my wife at the Superdome in 2012 doesn't rate as a pretty good avatar? Sheesh, hard to get a compliment around here!
Does the ball have to be in the cylinder for defensive goaltending? I'm definitely no UCLA apologist, but what is the rule? My gut reaction when I saw was goaltending. Ball coming down close to the goal, leave it alone!
Kansas and Oklahoma scored more in a half in 1988 than Texas and Butler are going to score in the entire game.
Teaching? oh, that's what all these kids are doing in this room.
In about 1996 it started to snow on the Wednesday night before the tourney and didn't stop until the Friday morning of the tourney.
Those were the two best snowdays I've had in my 22 years of teaching!
