Add more hype and pressure to Wiggins and more revenue and millions of miles of an expanded recruiting base.
Several players that went into the NBA last year including the monster from Gonzaga are from Canada. Their Olympic team is fantastic. Many see this as an unfair advantage for KU that is being allowed by the NCAA. The Time Warner deal is making KU show up on Sports Center for a Pitt State game. Screw 2/3rd's of KCMO, the largest fan base area, as long as the revenue pores in. I'm all for KU gaining this incredible recruiting edge, similar to Coach K's national commercials, but can the fans be taken care of just a bit. So far the only bone thrown was the Saturday morning open scrimmage.
Wigs is going against college players, granted, not D1 last night, but still these guys know how to steal and block shot on the way up. Pitt will be a strong team in their league and have a good coach. The Gorillas were just worn down by superior height, speed and depth.
Wigs nerves will settle down with Fort Hayes and Louisiana. But then the DUKE game on National TV in front of 25,000 with millions watching. No wonder Perry, Naadir, White and Black dominated for most of the first half. These are 18 year olds that want to live up to the hype, (Way too much hype) Wigs and Selden talked afterwards about feeling more nervous than they imagined. Wigs dunk and following flex spoke volumes. Watching the scrimmage and last night's game, Wigs is the type of player where you look up and realize he is the leading scorer and yet be surprised. He got beat on defense early but since the tallest player for Pitt was 6'6" he was able to recover and block. Lots of good educational film to watch this week. Coach will make sure that switching on defense will be stressed this week in practice. No more street AAU ball. Defense shall be played.
Finally, did Selden do something wrong? Very few minutes, and very little activity.
I glad some of our brothers are still fighting the good fight over on KUSports. Gary Bedore had commented about nine times today to respond to the negativity towards the site's new policy. Vjay responded to Bedores claim that he would rather respond to real people with real names. Vjay told him that he had just had a diatribe with a commenter named Mike Krotchurtz, then told him to say the name 3 times real fast. Many, including myself, would gladly pay a subscription fee of $1.99 to allow the paper and journalist to make money. Then, Vjay told Bedore to quit commenting on the site.
First game of the year and this is what we're talking about.
Rick Barnes is suggesting that most teams will switch to a zone to keep starters in the game. That would be sacrilegious at KU. I would love to see any team choose to play zone against us.
William Blake? William Blake? That cracked me up. That was the best read on LJW since the data mining policy began. I'm hoping that something can be resolved but apparently with the national spotlight shining hotter than ever, everyone in the media is trying to make a buck. LJW, for whatever lame reason, and even the University itself with the $50,000 fee to earn the right to pay even more money for season tickets. Even those tickets available on Stub Hub are being scalped for the Pittsburgh game at 3 times face value. But my seething anger is at Time Warner blocking half of KC from watching the 6 games that are exclusive. KU tells us that you can watch them on ESPN 3 for only $108.00. I'm 65 and can't buy beer for two and a half hours to see a game at a sports bar. At least there is radio. For over ten years I have not missed a Jayhawk game. As Jaybate said, "Used to be the rich folks went on cruises and the common folk watched basketball, now, everything is reversed."
I was at the practice and was amazed at AWIII. He looked as if he knew what he was doing in the system and he looked tougher, stronger and much more mature. His shot was falling and he was attacking the rim with a very powerful dunk to start the practice. I didn't think he would get on the floor this year unless Self thought he was much better on defense. Its like Morningstar once said, he knew he would never get any minutes unless he learned to play defense. A man behind me at the scrimmage who was also a contributor to the old site said he thought the AWIII looked quicker this year. Can Hudy make players quicker? I guess muscle and a proper diet can do just about anything. More than that, I give AWIII credit for working hard and earning this position. I'm still having nightmares of the way we attack the rim when a shot goes up. People are going to get hurt trying to rebound against this team. Only thing weak was the free throw shooting. That is always something Jayhawk fans keep track of.
Coaached called a play and Conner was running the wrong one. It was a bit weird to change what seemed like a late night kind of get-together and have it turn into a real practice. Conner took it in stride and ran the proper play afterwards. Tyler, Nikko and Evan have learned a few tricks from their parents at stealing the ball from big men. Each looked great on defense and too small on offense.
How'd you do the avatar?
For the first time in my 65 years I was on the front row. I was excited to see that the starting blue team was the obvious starting 5. Tharpe, Wiggins, Selden, Elllis and Black. The score at one time was 25 to 2. Wiggin's puts his hands on his hips and looks tired between timeouts and whistles, action starts, and he makes it look so easy. 21 pts. in 3 quarters seems not as good as he can be. With that said, Nikko and Evan have learned how to steal the ball from any big man who dares to take it below their shoulders. I see only 8 players getting any time and Andrew White is clearly leading Greene to back up Wiggins.
At times, Selden ran the point. I can see why Self loves him. The only startling thing that came about was when Self yelled at the ref to stop the game so he could yell at Conner. The starting 5 are bigger, faster and more talented than any KU team I've ever seen. I can also see Self's plan working. It was a pleasure to see who wants it and who gets it. There will not be too much of a drop off when White and Traylor come in the game. Mason is definitely our backup at point. Wiggins second jump will make everyone think that Drew Gooden is back in the building. One other thing, when the ball goes up the most ferocious battle for rebounds will shock anyone who witnesses it.
Hi gang, wrwlumpy here. I tweeted back and forth with Gary Bedore. This was what I said to him today. "http://KUSports.com ↗ died today with the boycott of the comment section. The award winning site loved worldwide is now dead." Go tell everyone where we are and lets get this non-marketing sight up and runnin. HEM, I thought you were dead.
JAYBATE COME HOME.
