Fisher has the # 21 team in the country with wins over Marquette and Creighton coming into the Field House still angry about Self stealing Kevin Young away. They are coming off a win last night at Colorado State in front of a crowd which looked to be about 45 people. After coach ranted about our lack of defense against Toledo, he said that we have to be ready for SDS because these will be MEN coming to play. We will have to play much better D and not hope for a good shooting night like last Monday.
"We love to dissect his rationale, analyze his recruiting, suggest tweaks and strategy, and second guess his decisions. But if we had to have one guy making the decisions, weβd choose him."
You are different from Jaybate in that you write things that make other bloggers focus to find the words to defend themselves. Your words tend to make everyone as passionate about this thing called basketball as you are.
Allen Field House really is a sacred magical place and I won't tell anyone that you are really HEM the Homer.
@jaybate 1.0 Thanks for the rebuttal. Coach is not infallible, but there is something called practice that we are not allowed to attend. Four coaches know who can defend and who can't. The forging of steel still starts at practice. A close game with one of the highest scoring teams in the country is not a time to let those who have not shown in practice that they can guard, be forgiven several times before they are pulled. If that were true, then Jeremy Case should have been a starter for 4 years. People wanted Rio to play more, people wanted Conner Teahan to play more as a Freshman. Losing games to let those who haven't shown they can do it in practice, to allow them to get better is not and never will be Self's M.O.

Greene got 5 minutes of playing time. Mason, Traylor and Black make up the bench that has the trust of Self. Toledo is ranked 3rd of all the mid-majors. They went on two 9-0 runs in the second half. Self has said he always wants the 5 best on the floor. Wigs, JoJo and Perry stayed out of foul trouble and we seem to have the lineup for Conference play. San Diego could give us a clear picture of whether we're ready for the Big 12. Offense with this group is fine, but there is no trust on defense beyond the 8-9 we saw last night.
I will somehow try to insert into a conversation, "Normie, I've got a hole at the five the size of a fully dilated elephant in child birth."
This is a good thing. I'd rather win by 25 points by going inside to the great Bigs we have than worry whether or not Andrew has a better game than Parker or Randle.
I'm returning this pain.

It will be very difficult for the Freshmen when we're playing a conference game in Stillwater, Ames, Waco, Norman and Austin. Wins from two of these venues could give us the Big 12 title again.
Merry Christmas to all. Thankful for another year of Jayhawk Basketball and for this gathering of creative epistles from the best of the best. approxinfinity, what a wonderful host you've been for this creative bunch of folks. Conference starts in two weeks, the winner might have 4 losses.
Missed you buddy. Now the season has started. Nimitz also knew how to blend the colors.
I've experienced it twice. Also, videos from You Tube seem to work now. Thank you so much for taking care of us.
I watched Perry's face at the game before he shot the free throw and he didn't know where he was. After he missed the basket to the left by two feet, I thought he was going to throw up. The replay on all of the head shots to JoJo, Tarik, Wigs and Perry were all cheap, cheap, shots. Going to the monitor should have resulted in 4 technicals instead of just the one. Allen Field House is the best in all sports. The team and the fans bonded yesterday. This is going to be a great year.

Not the happy joker from the KU bench anymore.
The lobo's big men were pump-faking the hell out of JoJo and he never left his feet. That is a tough thing to learn unless you are JoJo and haven't developed too many bad habits in only 3 years of playing BBall.
It looks as if Greene has an understanding of spacing when playing against zone. His spacing after reversing the ball several times allowed him to get off a good shot over a fraction of a late defender, but with his height and superb shooting form, swished it. In the second half playing the wing in front of Self and the KU bench, he made 3 great passes into the post for scores. Finally, with less than a minute to go he passed up an open three in front of Self, dribbled back up and sent a crisp pass to Naa to kill the clock. Something clicked for him in practice this week. Wiggins never got back in the game as Coach rewarded him by having Wigs sit back down for the final minute.
The rules committee got what they wanted with the Oregon-Mississippi game - Score, 115 to 105, Oregon. Welcome to the NBA.

If Jo Jo starts, then we will be just like Kentucky in the makeup of our team.
They'll have 4 Freshmen and the kid from Olathe Northwest as a Soph. starter.
Sherron was asked to start and said he was the "little brother" and deferred to Russ Rob.
When will Jo Jo?
Coach stated during his press conference that Frank was by far the best on the court during the Atlantis trip. He also included that Frank also played the worst two minutes at the end of the UTEP game.
Good for Frank. Jo Jo was voted Freshman of the week with 7 blocks in one game. He's always been in at the end of the game. I think that starting gives you some stature with the refs in recognizing you as a better player who might be given some slack on fouls. The way the big men have been fouling, Lucas and Wesley will be getting playing time.
Good games during the Chauncey years. I remember Roy saying that he had a choice as of who to bring to KU and he chose Pierce over Billups.
I listened to your question last night while driving to Lawrence. The previous caller tipped his troll hand by starting off "Hey Billy". If we could be at the practices each day, our speculation's about all of this would probably mirror that of Coach. Self put things into perspective about this season and how this was actually a good week for the team. They learned a lot. Eating post game dinner at 2:30 a.m. and then getting up to play in a consolation game against a 2-3 zone, a 4 corner, and a box and one after a loss where they had fought back from playing horribly, "coaches word's", gave him great gratification. Also, not to expect an off night and going undefeated is absurd. Coach referenced the team that went to the finals of the NCAA playing against Kentucky in the Champions series, with no understanding of the offence except to have Tyshawn dribble till he got fouled. This is going to be a great team when this talent starts to believe in the system and attacks the full court press like they will after this week of practice.
A face guarded "Box and 1" is part of all college defensive strategies. The key for the rest of the team to start hitting shots, or face guarding of Wiggins will continue. The people that built Wiggins up are starting to tear him down. Any sub-par game will be a diagnosis as a failure for a kid that should still actually be in high school. The whole team is so young. Everyone at Kansas would rather have a win and a game where we have improved than a stat filler that doesn't fit into Self's system. It was always said that the only person to keep Jordan under 30 points was Dean Smith.
However, Selden is not yet James Worthy.
Wiggins was obviously sick. I thought so long before the announcers told us. Shouldnt have been allowed to play, for his health and that of the rest of the team. Perry also was said to be under the weather. Seth tweeted after the game that Wiggins had not left his room since they arrived. Apparently the docs thought he was no longer infectious and allowed him to play. He still turned it on at the end. I can't wait to see him healthy and ready from the opening tip. The player of the game once again was Andrew Wiggins.
I remember Ryan Robertson after finally winning at MU with his last second heroics, going over to stand in front of the Antlers with his hands on his hips staring at them while the yelled obscenities at him and throwing cups and food as he just smiled at them. 1998.
We are playing in a Ballroom that will have fewer seats that a Shawnee Mission East gym. I hope they take the Chandeliers down before the game starts. Three charter planes filled with Williams Club boosters will take up most of the seats. Like Jaybate said, it used to be that rich folk went on cruises and regular folks went to basketball games. Now it's just the opposite.
You can listen on line to the stations until the Jayhawk game and pregame come on for advertising reasons. I read the first blog about them being on 610. You can listen all day at work, but when the game starts, they switch to national radio. NO JAYHAWK GAME online. I called 610 and asked, they cannot do it online, but suggested KU Athletics stream. Went there and if ESPN# is not available where you live, then no stream from them either. You win Time-Warner. PLEASE MR Zenger, don't do this again next year.
It has to be a regular radio. You cannot listen online to either of those stations.
Sorry, they did lose to Nova.
I'm concerned about the benching of Greene. Last night on Coaches show, Self talked about over-recruiting for the possibility of transfers happening. Greene is talented and is much more animated than any other newby that has come in. Self said something about him not being in trouble, then says he needs to take care of things off the court also. What's up?
Towson is 3-0 beating Temple last night. What a great game for Kansas City and 90% of the State of Kansas not to be able to watch. What a diabolical business success. Do the Koch brothers, who are obviously WSU fans own Time Warner?
Welcome Jesse, Glad to have someone here from the good o'l days. Making a buck in Journalism these days is a gift. Will you be doing your breakdowns from POM? I'm very happy you're doing this. Always thought you were the best of the bunch.
For the over 100,000 Jayhawk fans in the KC Metro area and for all of you west of Salina to the Colorado border, here's what we missed last night. The short version.
How much pain they have cost us, the evils which have never happened. Thomas Jefferson
Another night of not watching the Jayhawks. So if we are real fans we've been told to shut up and realize that by missing these 6 games that we are helping the University. Or, maybe next year, rather than extort the largest area of the KU fan base they could allow the purchase of KU Basketball by other outlets and line their pockets that way rather than telling us to pay the cost of another full months cable bill for the 4 months we are being extorted. I hope Time Warner lets all of their new KU Basketball customers know about the low price for the first year and the double price the second year on their 2 year contract.
Iowa State knocks of Michigan at home. Oklahoma beats Alabama. Baylor whips South Carolina. Wonder how the Okie State-Memphis game will be?
Big 12 might not have as many teams as the ACC and American, but Our top 5 can beat their top 5.
Self became known as the best coach in the country when Jeff, Travis and Conner Teahan, all Red shirts and one walk-on, played in the National Championship game
Justanother, I'm am now and will always believe that Bill Self will always be right about basketball decisions. No really, what he told us about Mason 4 months ago has been shown to be true. Development of talent is his claim to fame and is always spouted by those pundits who are knowledge about the game. JoJo will be gone soon enough and in forging steel, the fire has to be hot, or some other pity phrase. Also, he has stated that he always wants the 5 best on the floor. Tuesday night with 4 guards and Ellis, that was the best rotation for that last 3 minutes. He amazes me more that the skill of his players.
The whole game without commercials.
Live free or die.
HEM, It is good you are still blogging. My Mason moment was when Self went to the Tharpe, Selden, Ellis, Wiggins lineup, keeping Frank in for that 3 minute stretch at the end, my excitement was akin to watching Tharpe given the keys at end of the OSU game last year. Mason was more than equal with this group and had the most confidence and least fear of all on the court. It was one of those KU fan moments when we all say, "Wow, Bill knows what he's doing, " All of us are Monday morning Quarterbacks, JoJo shooting the 3, Frank starting the last shot of the half 10 secs. too early, but as each of my Jayhawk customers came into my store, all of them mentioned Frank Mason first in the conversation. I hope Wiggins wins every award, but inside the KU nation, the team will always be more important, I did love that Wiggins became the hero at the end, but all of those plays started with Ellis rebounding and throwing great outlets. I was worried that Self would look long and hard to find an answer to the youth problem, I'm less worried now.
What a stupid thing for me to post, after watching the Monroe game.
We will see Joe in the NCAA Tourney and Dunk City will be on national TV several times this year.
Jay William predicts that KU will crush Duke down low.
His praise of Selden seems a bit over the top. But, Self has been working on a Duke game plan before the season began. It will be a a telling first half to see who the main players are going to be La-Monroe will be a good test and I doubt that the coaches boys get in the game until under 1 minute left if at all.
I realized after Ptt State and Fort Hayes that Lucas and Wesley will get more minutes than I imagined. It will be tough to keep Black in the game and the same is true for JoJo until he learns to not leave his feet early and to go straight up.
Since Self has been at KU, the best fans in basketball have learned the beauty of defense. The satisfaction of watching a game with several back to back shot clock violations showed how much the fans love what Self has brought. I kept wondering why the hell Brent Musburger thought that the officiating in the big 12 tourney was slanted for the Jayhawks until Fraschilla pointed that the Hawks on the replay actually did not foul, even though Weber and the Mayor threw fits at every non-call. We are quick enough at the guard and wings to adapt to the new rule. Big Perry seems to have figured it out underneath, but the other two have not.
Everyone thought that Perry would be the starter last year, but the man who played sparingly and got better on the way to the NC game was Kevin Young. Could the same thing be happening this year with White over Selden?
Thanks for the post. I'm a DTV customer who is tired of spending $35.00 at Buffalo Wild Wings to see an non-HD version. These highlights, which do not show the miserable first 15 minutes of the game give me more hope for the Freshmen. I left at half to listen to the game at home on the radio like I used to back in the 80's. I do like Gurley's comments about sitting Wiggins for not putting out effort in those first 15 minutes. Apparently, Coach put him in again and saw him standing around and yanked him. Gurley said that Wigs seemed a bit upset and when Coach again put him back in he stole the ball and went down quickly for a dunk and stayed involved for the rest of the game. He needs to learn to play every second he's on the court.
Last year, I learned that coaches in the Big 12 are pretty good. I'm basing this on how towards the end of the conference and in the Conference Tourney, all of them had figured out how to play against Ben McLemore. Very little offense from Ben over the last ten games and his ability to get 20+ against Michigan when he was away from a long scouting report. AAU coaches did not prepare a scouting report or a complicated defense in any AAU super Stars game.
Wiggins had the ball stolen from him by a D-II guard twice. That came from scouting. In order for KU to win against comparable foes this year, Wiggins will have to be part of a plan for offense and be able to share even though none of us really want him to. Coach is teaching him to draw defenders and dish. Perry was taught last year that when the ball comes inside to him that he must shoot unless a triple team or a good double team hits him fast. All must play in Coaches system and use their talent, speed and height when everything breaks down. Frashilla and Bilas and every other knowledgeable coach knows the beauty of this offense when the ball does not stick and several ball reversals take place for an open shot or a lay up. Expecting Wigs to put the ball up every time he gets the ball won't happen. Davis didn't score a bunch of points or block a lot of shots, but UK beat us because of him. We will beat a lot of teams because of Wiggins without him scoring more than 15 per game.
These Exhibition games are so important to allow this team to become a team.
