Keep hearing the $250m number for phase 1. Not sure how much the University and/or Endowment will kick in. Probably depends on how ā€œmultiuseā€ the facility will actually be. Can’t wait for the details to come out!

But. It’s happening. Money people are in. Goff and Girod both know how important it is to get it right. As it will be.

Aug 31, 2022 12:51 PM #2

I am not holding my breath. It has to get done but without $200M+ coming from endowment it won’t imo.

Capital planning is tough. They are building a new Cancer Center at the Rainbow location that is going to be very expensive (but necessary with the new designation). They need to knock down/renovate a few other buildings on campus.

The stadium needs done, but what I can’t figure out is why we don’t just play at Sporting until the money is there to do it right. Do a 5-10 year campaign and do it right.

Aug 31, 2022 03:45 PM #3

Neither side wants KU at Sporting. Once the renderings come out you can be sure most of the money is there. I do believe a capital campaign is coming. Not sure on an announcement date but have heard the stadium will be included.

Aug 31, 2022 04:22 PM #4

@FarmerJayhawk if there a reason why Sporting doesn’t want KU there? And vice versa?

It makes too much sense to me to do it.

I've read 350 Million , from the article I read today they trying to include things that will fit in right at the North East Corner of the stadium at what is it? - -13th and Mississippi ? adding in some things right there at the bottom of the hill - -things to go with the stadium

Sep 01, 2022 01:59 AM #6

@Kcmatt7 it absolutely will destroy the field. I believe that’s why Sporting didn’t want the D2 championship back. Too much work to keep the field in soccer shape.

Sep 01, 2022 02:55 AM #7

Don’t know that I buy that as the main reason. But it isn’t going to happen so it isn’t worth discussing.

Just hope this time it happens. The KUEA Annual report should be somewhat telling if the money is actually there.

Put me in the still skeptical category. Hard to believe Goff came in and secured funding for the stadium in one year when other ADs have been trying for a while.

The D2 title game is well after soccer season is over so that's not a reason I'm believing for not renewing the D2 title game. As for not wanting KU footballas a temporary tenant, that would be more reasonable as Children's Mercy already hosts 2 pro soccer teams and there is some significant overlap between MLS, NWSL, and college football schedules in September and October.

Could be an announcement tomorrow. A Lawrence firm got the contract for (I believe) phase 1 of the project, I've heard HNTB will do the heavy lifting on the actual stadium.

@KirkIsMyHinrich I don't think any contract is that close to done.

Oct 06, 2022 08:25 PM #13

Contract negotiations for Leipold just started. I can't see them being done yet unless KU basically handed him a blank piece of paper and told him to write whatever he wanted on it.

@jayballer67 I like their stadium a lot. The view of the downtown skyline is pretty cool. My favorite design is Washington’s. I love how they ripped out almost all end zone seating and built it like a canyon. Imagine the hill and Campanile instead of the lake. Perfection.

Was talking with a friend and he haad heard of a radio Station that KU has asked Coach what he was looking for what he needed - -Coach said that he want money for NIL'S - -& he talked about the Stadium being upgraded.

I can imagine they said on the spot - - - DONE - I mean they already know how badly the Stadium needs major , major remodel - -NILS only make sense , I feel whatever Coach asks for they will try and do all possible to make it happen.

Feb 14, 2023 04:28 PM #26

@jayballer67 I think by the time it’s all said and done it’ll be $450m ish. We’re looking at a near complete demo and rebuild, which with inflation will be pricey. Also the investments to the north of the stadium are said to be substantial.

Feb 14, 2023 05:16 PM #27

Random question.

Is Kansas, KU, or Lawrence issuing municipal bonds in an effort to help raise money/capital?

Or is the money from endowments and donations?

Feb 14, 2023 07:52 PM #28

@rockchalkwyo heard the vast majority will come from the latter.

It's kind of funny seeing KSU fans all butthurt saying they didn't use any public funding, but they did issue a crapload of revenue bonds through the state lol

looking forward to it. - - This is something that has needed done for some time. - Both was in such bad shape. Thing is and some don't realize that the surroundings / stadium / field / and things all play a big part in recruiting. Better players like to play in nice facilities / weight rooms / training and such . We have to keep up , if we want better players--we need better facilities isn't the only thing but these things do pla a part.

I can't wait to see / experience it when it is al said and done, like you say it's going to be practially a whole new stadium - seeing that new and then seeing the hill what a sight that will be at night. - -get's me stoked

I also did not realize how much they were tearing out. I thought they were tearing out seats to reconfigure that and make room for suites... etc. But did not expect the press box, field, apparently everything to go.

I left this question on twitter for Matt Tait but he hasn't responded... maybe someone here knows the answer: The stadium is a WW1 memorial. What part of the memorial is going to remain (or be preserved)? Any of it??

Jan 07, 2024 12:06 AM #55

@bskeet This is in the A Walk Through History section on the Gateway District info site about the renovation:

"The renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will continue its cherished history by commemorating WWI as one of Kansas’ six war memorials. Details on the memorial will be released at a later date."

Don't know if this is old or still awaiting details.

Jan 08, 2024 05:51 PM #56

Thank you. I had not seen that. Feel like that's pretty important. Hope they don't bury it just because it's 100+ years old. I think the historical aspect of our campus is an asset and honoring those who have served should not be pushed downstream, to a footnote or token acknowledgment.
