Big test of heart tonight. Can't let 2 become 3.

Jalen can't carry this team alone.

Jan 23, 2023 04:54 PM #2

It should be an interesting game. Will Bill let them play out of it and also does he really have any choice? I say throw all of us to the wolves (bears) and work through it. Gradey please get back to your instinctual type play. Joe and Zack chuck up threes. Have at least three of our big guys foul out and play like KJ baby!!!!

Jan 23, 2023 05:44 PM #3

It's all about defense. Offense will come around on it's own if we play D.

Just how bad do we want to win?

Jan 23, 2023 06:24 PM #4

Question for you all:

What is a better motivator... love to win... or... hate to lose?

I agree, but it is a lot harder to be motivated on D when the ball isn't going in on O... Gradey and Kev struggling on O is likely causing mental issues on the other end.

So in my opinion it is a compounding issue, especially when the bench is as thin as it is.

The unfortunate reality is that this is a pretty unathletic and flawed roster. I said from the get that we should have gone after a different player than McCullar who is just not that good and causes a lot of issues for this team offensively. He is a Bill Self pet who can't shoot and can't create his own shot. We essentially are starting 4 role players and Jalen. And what we really needed was another guard/wing who could go get his own shot. There were plenty of options - Ricky Council, Tyrese Hunter, Kendric Davis, Terrence Shannon, Jahmir Young, Grant Sherfield, etc. We needed a guy who had "it," and that was just not Kev.

Top that off with the mess that is the 5 spot and you see just how flawed this team really is. KJ has been a great player there, but against size he is just going to struggle and we have NOTHING to throw at teams who do have size. I don't actually fault the staff for this issue. I feel like they felt the position had been addressed and that the transfer market was not great. HOWEVER, had I known Zach was THIS bad I would have begged Dave to stay. 20/20 hindsight for sure. And there is always the possibility that Dave was never coming back even if the coaches tried their best to convince him. I probably would have booted Cam and tried to bring in another big myself, but I can see why they were okay with the 13th scholarship being Cam.

Finally - we lack that bench piece difference maker. Bobby ain't it. Joe ain't it. I still am of the belief that MJ COULD be it if they just let him loose, but still not exactly a guarantee.

I'm not writing the season off, or even winning the league. But the sad reality is that this is a team with a VERY small margin for error, and they just used up a large percentage of that margin losing at home Saturday. They are in the midst of a backbreaking stretch of games. It feels like the season could go off the rails pretty quickly if they don't win 2 of the next 3. There are easily 8 losses left on the schedule if things don't start trending the other way.

I just can't remember the last time we were playing this poorly during such a brutal stretch of games. Need a gutsy performance out of the guys tonight to get us back on track.

Jan 23, 2023 08:44 PM #6

I'm really glad I checked here. I get pretty pissed after a loss like the other day and just slither away wallowing in my pity and not checking on the bucket. I had totally forgotten about this game tonight. Hopefully a 3 game losing streak isn't the result of tonights match.

Mental notes for surviving tonight.

  1. Mute TV and sync radio call.

  2. If you must listen to TV tweet at fran and his inane biasesness. Maybe he will get it.

  3. Wear your championship T from 22, or 08, or 86. Might bring us some luck.

  4. Keep telling yourself we're defending national champs and there's no shame in losing in the tourney this season.

  5. Allow yourself to momentarily become @stupidmichael and say you're scared, and then pretend you're @dynomitehawk and yell "Hide Yo Kids" at the beginning of the game.

  6. Tell a few jokes at the expense of KState.

  7. Tell a few more jokes at the expense of Mizzou.

  8. Check the all time victories list.

  9. Yell "Serenity Now" when anything goes wrong.

  10. Tweet at Bill Self and the players giving them some tips.

  11. Gaze at whatever Jayhawk thing you have in the house and pray to it.

Jan 23, 2023 09:21 PM #7

Baylor takes and makes a lot of threes. So it is going to come down to the perimeter defense. Baylor is really bad on D so we should look better on offense, but if they are raining in threes it will be a long night. Baylor is really small on the perimeter so hopefully our size with Juan, Dick, Kevin, and Jalen can bother their shooters.

This seems like a classic KU is down and out bounce back game for KU, but I can't say I am super confident about tonight.

Jan 23, 2023 09:31 PM #8

@drgnslayr Hate to Lose. Everyone should love to win.

Jan 23, 2023 09:33 PM #9

@wissox Pretty hard to tell KSU jokes right now. Although, their Livestock Judging team is backsliding pretty badly right now.

Obviously some offense can come from better defense -- turnovers, transition buckets, etc. But, good defense doesn't make a team a brilliant offensively. So, not seeing this team turn a miracle corner on O unless they all up their shooting ability. I think we can be good offensively, but buying in on D doesn't solve our O problems.

McCullar -- ya, been saying and thinking the same thing for a while. He's a Self guy. You can have some Self pets on the floor, but not three of em at the same time --Dajuan, McCullar and until recently KJ. Add Pettiford to that mix when he comes in. I dunno how he thinks you can win without scoring. He's smarter than me, so must be a way!

Which all means he has to let MJ out of the doghouse. He has to. Dude can score. He may eff up on positioning, miss a guy on D, but surely the other Self pet projects on the floor can help offset his issues.

We still have a very good team. The margin for error has shrunk considerably this season, that's all.

Jan 23, 2023 10:53 PM #11

It was fun thinking we were going to go through the B12 undefeated. We were going to be the overall number 1 seed, and repeat as national champions, even though we lost 4 out of 5 of our top scorers from last year. Now we're back to "Self's pets" and Self has "blinders" as we lose games in January.

It looks so great, then it looks so grim. We don't like our players-we don't like our coach. We were a FF team- now we won't make it past the first weekend. Lather, rinse, repeat. Every year.

I hope we win tonight. I know it's going to be tough. I hope we win Saturday- I know it's going to be tough. And the next 3 games after that- tough. Still, I wouldn't trade our program or our coach for anybody else in college basketball. We truly are one of the most spoiled fanbases in the world. UNC, Villanova, Dook would give their left nut to be 16-3 right now.

Confession: Last year, after we lost our 2nd game in a row ( TCU), I came to the conclusion that last year's team was never going to win anything- that this group of players ( Och, Dave, CB, and Remy ) would never win because they just weren't clutch. I even posted that I thought Bill had lost the team. And then we win every game. Every. Game. for the rest of the year. So, I kind of sold them short, which I don't normally do. I'm normally the other way. But not last year. Doesn't mean we're going to magically win 17 in a row this year- we have issues, no doubt. But, I'm not going to get off the best ride in town. I've been following this show since 1972, and I'm going to keep following it, win or lose.

Jan 24, 2023 12:59 AM #14

Jan 24, 2023 01:01 AM #16

Wow that kid just walloped #5 in the face celebrating. That has to be a foul.

Jan 24, 2023 01:03 AM #17

I hate to defend Duke but you can punch someone in the face, even if it's incidental and not get a foul called?

Jan 24, 2023 01:05 AM #18

Wow

Jan 24, 2023 01:06 AM #19

Duke sucks. Can I get a hallelujah?

I know Bill sees stuff in practice and we’ve seen it in games but this ain’t it. No remy to save us

Jan 24, 2023 01:13 AM #32

Under the goal and charge

No one looking to score except JW and Gradey

Jan 24, 2023 01:21 AM #50

Too familiar problems...Baylor has 4 more shot attempts...result of 3-0 on TOs and they have twice as many RBs - 2-0 ORBs...

Jan 24, 2023 01:21 AM #51

I rewound that. Stupid play by Pettiford even if it wasn't a charge

Jan 24, 2023 01:21 AM #52

Kevin had one

Jan 24, 2023 01:22 AM #53

another hot start by our opponent

Jan 24, 2023 01:23 AM #54

Good job kev!

Jan 24, 2023 01:23 AM #55

Lol at Jalen “bumped” half the team jumped on him

Jan 24, 2023 01:23 AM #56

4 turnovers already with the small ball lineup and no one will shoot the friggin ball

Jan 24, 2023 01:32 AM #75

Playing like this, we could quickly go from 16-1 to 16-10. No easy games in the next 8 or 9. Getting outplayed in every phase right now...

Jan 24, 2023 01:33 AM #76

Jan 24, 2023 02:03 AM #129

Don't turn the ball over and keep Baylor off the offensive glass. Do those two things and KU should be able to win.

Jan 24, 2023 02:03 AM #130

Getting beat in almost every facet and just down 7. 8-8 FTs kept it within shouting distance...

Jan 24, 2023 02:04 AM #131

Without gradey

Jan 24, 2023 02:04 AM #132

Huh...we caught up with em on total rebounds.

Jan 24, 2023 02:04 AM #133

Stop the dumass unforced turnovers and we'll be OK

Jan 24, 2023 02:04 AM #134

MJ had 2

Jan 24, 2023 02:05 AM #135

We have 7 turnovers and they have 9 offensive rebounds.

Consequently, they have 11 more shot attempts than we do.

Rebound and don't turn the ball over.

Jan 24, 2023 02:05 AM #136

Notch up the intensity on both ends and we could win this easily. We're just letting Baylor do what they want

Jan 24, 2023 02:06 AM #137

Still 0 rebounds from the 5.

Jan 24, 2023 02:07 AM #138

Kev's stat line not too shabby - 8 and 6 with 3 assists.

Jan 24, 2023 02:07 AM #139

Jan 24, 2023 02:13 AM #144

Jan 24, 2023 02:16 AM #145

Boy hope Grady can get past this slump - -need that stroke back. - - Kevin playing a little better

Jan 24, 2023 02:17 AM #146

We need Gradey Dick...not Gradey Brick!

I'll show myself out.

Jan 24, 2023 02:17 AM #147

I think this team's problem (right now, at least) is that we are really missing guys like Big Dave and Braun who had fire and passion during the game to pump up the other guys. No energy guy like Mitch to come off the bench either.

Jan 24, 2023 02:18 AM #150

I'm amazed we aren't down by 20. Bad turnovers, invisible Juan, defensive meltdowns, few defensive rebounds...

If we can play 10 minutes of defense, we might win this game.

Jan 24, 2023 02:19 AM #151

Mj's 2 points is it from the becnch

Jan 24, 2023 02:21 AM #152

Took Wilson a long time to see KJ LOL

Jan 24, 2023 02:21 AM #153

Thats better

Jan 24, 2023 02:21 AM #154

Offensive glass good lord

Jan 24, 2023 02:22 AM #155

Juan scoring is good

Jan 24, 2023 02:22 AM #156

Juando in the house. Welcome back, fella

Jan 24, 2023 02:22 AM #157

Woah! When did DJ get here?

Jan 24, 2023 02:22 AM #158

Some guy named Harris scored. lol

Jan 24, 2023 02:23 AM #159

Boxing out is a nice fundamental

Jan 24, 2023 02:23 AM #160

Of course the second we play a little better on D we can’t get a thing to fall

Jan 24, 2023 02:24 AM #161

K.

Jan 24, 2023 02:25 AM #162

Wilson fouls?

Jan 24, 2023 02:25 AM #163

Much better offense this half

Jan 24, 2023 02:25 AM #164

2 fouls on JWill

Jan 24, 2023 02:25 AM #165

GET A STOP

Jan 24, 2023 02:25 AM #166

We're showing some signs of life.

Jan 24, 2023 02:26 AM #167

DICK AT THE HOLE

Jan 24, 2023 02:26 AM #168

Boom!

Jan 24, 2023 02:26 AM #169

We need Juan to step up and lead. Run offense... make a few steals... assists... control tempo

Jan 24, 2023 02:26 AM #170

Offense is snappier.

Defense finally quit switching everything

Jan 24, 2023 02:26 AM #171

Jay Bilas is happy with that, so...

Jan 24, 2023 02:27 AM #172

Duh!

Jan 24, 2023 02:27 AM #173

Defensive rebounds are my only complaint so far this half. Playing better though

Jan 24, 2023 02:27 AM #174

We are alive!

Jan 24, 2023 02:27 AM #175

This crew messes up too much but they’re tougher than a $2 strip steak

@KirkIsMyHinrich said in Baylor Game Tonight:

Baylor 13 offensive rebounds

Jan 24, 2023 02:28 AM #177

@FarmerJayhawk stealing that one. Thanks!

Jan 24, 2023 02:28 AM #178

@jayballer67 Seems like they get three about each trip down the court

Jan 24, 2023 02:28 AM #179

Well we have scrapped our way back to make this a game -- -got to stay solid

Jan 24, 2023 02:29 AM #180

Why the hell do we have to spot the other team a double digit lead before we start playing good BB

Jan 24, 2023 02:29 AM #181

Kevin is a determined dude.

Jan 24, 2023 02:29 AM #182

BU missed their last couple of junker threes. That helped

Jan 24, 2023 02:29 AM #183

3 guys in double figures now

Jan 24, 2023 02:29 AM #184

@drgnslayr hehe go for it!

Jan 24, 2023 02:29 AM #185

@Jayblaze said in Baylor Game Tonight:

@jayballer67 Seems like they get three about each trip down the court

seems like when we play Baylor this always happens just beat us to death on the offensive boards

Jan 24, 2023 02:30 AM #186

If we can defend (also defensive rebound)... we probably win this game. It's that simple.

Jan 24, 2023 02:30 AM #187

That's fucking better!
Put on my #Jayhawk pajamas at the start of second half!!

Jan 24, 2023 02:30 AM #188

We need about 10 points every game from the bench so far tonight 2.

Jan 24, 2023 02:30 AM #189

@drgnslayr looks like Juan is trying to stay on cryer,😥

Jan 24, 2023 02:30 AM #190

@RockChalkinTexas

You will receive credit if they win!

Jan 24, 2023 02:30 AM #191

Aw man T’s and P’s to Coach Q. That’s tough

Jan 24, 2023 02:31 AM #192

Jan 24, 2023 02:32 AM #195

Gradey is a freshman.... he's learning.

Jan 24, 2023 02:33 AM #196

Dick got fouled hard and Sirmons from 50 feet away gives the ball to Baylor

Jan 24, 2023 02:33 AM #197

GD

Jan 24, 2023 02:33 AM #198

KJ does not get his money's worth on his fouls.

However, we have Five guys on the same page now!!!

Jan 24, 2023 02:33 AM #199

Keep hands off

Jan 24, 2023 02:33 AM #200

Jan 24, 2023 02:34 AM #202

Finally a functional lob. Been off all season. Things are looking up.

Jan 24, 2023 02:34 AM #203

that was a BS call. Should hav been a foul on the rebound

Jan 24, 2023 02:34 AM #204

Spoke too soon.

Jan 24, 2023 02:34 AM #205

Charge

Jan 24, 2023 02:34 AM #206

Jan 24, 2023 02:37 AM #223

Doug Sirmons has money on this game

Jan 24, 2023 02:38 AM #224

That might have been the worst one minute of reffing I've ever seen

Jan 24, 2023 02:38 AM #225

good lesson for us playing a team this deadly from trey. Exposes how bad our trey d is.

Jan 24, 2023 02:38 AM #226

Wilson didn't dip his shoulder near as much as the dude that dipped into gradey

Jan 24, 2023 02:38 AM #227

So we are a small team that can't guard the trey. We just don't hustle.

Jan 24, 2023 02:38 AM #228

We don't have even 3 reliable shooters

Jan 24, 2023 02:39 AM #229

@drgnslayr Been a big problem for us the last three games

Jan 24, 2023 02:39 AM #230

@RockChalkinTexas said in Baylor Game Tonight:

Unfortunately

Jan 24, 2023 02:39 AM #231

So we have Tang from K/straight doing a little jig-a-boo at K/Straight with the fans --- We have Drew doing jumpin Jax to the Crowd - - are we playing a basketball game or is this AMERICA'S GOT TALENT ?

Jan 24, 2023 02:40 AM #232

@drgnslayr said in Baylor Game Tonight:

Has to improve. Has been one of Bill’s Achilles heel’s for years

Jan 24, 2023 02:41 AM #233

We don't get into an offensive groove these last games. It all looks awkward. It's because our defense sucks. When the other team scores, they get back and set their defense. When we defensive rebound and get out in transition, their defense isn't set and our offense flows.

Jan 24, 2023 02:42 AM #234

Don't switch

Jan 24, 2023 02:42 AM #235

GD creating his own shots a bit?

Jan 24, 2023 02:42 AM #236

Juan and kj been badddddd

Jan 24, 2023 02:43 AM #237

Jan 24, 2023 02:44 AM #242

Harris & Adams are just killin us

Jan 24, 2023 02:44 AM #243

this is one tough league.... not a good year to play soft!

Jan 24, 2023 02:44 AM #244

I'm going outside now to clean my trash cans.

Jan 24, 2023 02:45 AM #245

we're playing our asses off so keep that up.

Jan 24, 2023 02:45 AM #246

Wtf happened to this team?

Jan 24, 2023 02:45 AM #247

KJ had Dick wide open for 3 too

Jan 24, 2023 02:45 AM #248

Can't we make a GD three, I mean 3 footer

Jan 24, 2023 02:45 AM #249

we're taking our damn time getting up the court to set up the offense. maybe that's by design to save energy because our bench is thin and useless, so

Jan 24, 2023 02:45 AM #251

@Zabudda

we punch, they punch back. It's how it should be... as long as we keep punching back and don't go soft!

Jan 24, 2023 02:45 AM #252

They are playing hard now. That's a start. Dick isn't ready to lose this game

Jan 24, 2023 02:46 AM #253

Juan with so many uncharacteristic turnovers the last 3 games. KJ lost his touch. McCullar can’t make a layup.

At least Dick has his swagger back.

Jan 24, 2023 02:46 AM #254

That sequence where the zebras gave Baylor about 3 straight chances really fudged things

Jan 24, 2023 02:46 AM #255

I could probably block Kev's slow motion layups

Jan 24, 2023 02:47 AM #256

Baylor is getting NBA continuation tonight too

Jan 24, 2023 02:47 AM #257

Will we see some determined effort from the guys? 🙏

Jan 24, 2023 02:47 AM #258

Baylor has enough talent without the Refs gifting them calls

Jan 24, 2023 02:47 AM #260

KU 8 fouls - - -Baylor 2

Jan 24, 2023 02:48 AM #261

Gradey 20!

Jan 24, 2023 02:51 AM #273

KU 10- fouls - - Baylor 2

Jan 24, 2023 02:51 AM #274

That wasnt a travel on MJ. If anything it was a jump

Jan 24, 2023 02:51 AM #275

Juan!

Jan 24, 2023 02:51 AM #276

Not mad at the boys. Just tired of Baylors trash.

Jan 24, 2023 02:52 AM #277

Unless we get a bunch of stops this one is over.

Jan 24, 2023 02:52 AM #278

OMG - - - OMG - - OMG -- STOP THE PRESS THEY CALLED A FOUL ON BAYLOR

Jan 24, 2023 02:52 AM #279

Jan 24, 2023 02:53 AM #282

Telegraph much?

Jan 24, 2023 02:53 AM #283

we are getting tired

Jan 24, 2023 02:53 AM #284

No place in this game or any other for that one sided of officials. Ppl like that don't deserve jobs and barely deserve air

Jan 24, 2023 02:53 AM #285

they are getting tired

Jan 24, 2023 02:54 AM #286

Self needs to take this tape to fran

Jan 24, 2023 02:54 AM #287

This is the worst officiated game I've seen in a while. Jalen got obviously undercut there.

Jan 24, 2023 02:54 AM #288

@drgnslayr I sure am!

Jan 24, 2023 02:54 AM #289

They are in double bonus!!

Jan 24, 2023 02:54 AM #290

oops I meant they are getting motivated... we are getting tired.

Jan 24, 2023 02:54 AM #291

Keyonte George with the blowby on Rice

Jan 24, 2023 02:54 AM #295

MJ won't be back

Jan 24, 2023 02:55 AM #296

@Crimsonorblue22 correct. And it isn't because of back spasms imo

Jan 24, 2023 02:55 AM #297

@Crimsonorblue22 said in Baylor Game Tonight:

MJ won't be back

exactly. Why play him at all. He's not even trying

Jan 24, 2023 02:55 AM #298

so we lose this one... then lose to Kentucky... that's 4 in a row and all the sports tv guys will go crazy

Jan 24, 2023 02:56 AM #299

which will surely give us a chip!

Jan 24, 2023 02:56 AM #300

I think we're seeing why MJ doesn't play much. 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 5 minutes.

Jan 24, 2023 02:56 AM #301

@Crimsonorblue22 meh, waaaaay too early to say

Jan 24, 2023 02:56 AM #302

Jan 24, 2023 02:56 AM #304

I honestly don't care if we lose to kentucky. Spend the entire week preparing for the rest of the conference and use the UK game as a scrimmage

Jan 24, 2023 02:56 AM #305

@FarmerJayhawk I don't know if Self wants him back

Jan 24, 2023 02:57 AM #306

Love that love kid.... he's been through a lot.

Jan 24, 2023 02:57 AM #307

Make a freaking layup!

Jan 24, 2023 02:57 AM #308

Jan 24, 2023 02:57 AM #309

@Crimsonorblue22 I know he thinks a healthy MJ can be really really good in time

Jan 24, 2023 02:57 AM #310

just think - -about a week ago they talked about KU being the top overall number 1 seed in the tourney

Jan 24, 2023 03:00 AM #321

@jayballer67 tough when your 1 and 5 aren’t playing well

Tougher when your 1 is doing what board rats could seE

Tough people claim last years team as proof when this is a new product

Jan 24, 2023 03:01 AM #322

@BeddieKU23 can’t and won’t

Jan 24, 2023 03:01 AM #323

Jan 24, 2023 03:01 AM #325

Juan hasn't been himself lately.

Jan 24, 2023 03:03 AM #329

@kuballin10 let’s be honest you’d be complaining about their lack of shooting just as much.

Jan 24, 2023 03:03 AM #330

at least make Chip and Joann get a little nervous

Jan 24, 2023 03:03 AM #331

Lets go!

Jan 24, 2023 03:03 AM #332

I'm already dreading that Lexington trip!

Jan 24, 2023 03:04 AM #333

Yes a bolt of lightning! Thank you Joe

Jan 24, 2023 03:04 AM #334

Jan 24, 2023 03:05 AM #337

I just don't like losing to UK. Calipari and fan base disgust me.

Jan 24, 2023 03:05 AM #338

But, really, Kev and Gradey showed up tonight. Who woulda thought we got 20 from GD and a double double from Kev and still could lose.

Jan 24, 2023 03:06 AM #339

Just gotta get our real Juando Harris back

Jan 24, 2023 03:06 AM #340

@Jayblaze

What we are missing is Juan.

Jan 24, 2023 03:07 AM #341

Mostly Juan's defense.

Jan 24, 2023 03:07 AM #342

Harris another throw away-- -DAMMMMMMMMMMIT

Jan 24, 2023 03:07 AM #343

Jan 24, 2023 03:07 AM #344

Another Juan turnover and huge 4 point swing

Jan 24, 2023 03:07 AM #345

Jan 24, 2023 03:08 AM #346

@drgnslayr case in point

Jan 24, 2023 03:08 AM #347

Juan has to be sent a message from self. You can't defend this

Jan 24, 2023 03:09 AM #353

Jan 24, 2023 03:11 AM #359

If Harris was on... he'd be getting a key steal about now.

Jan 24, 2023 03:11 AM #360

take Harris out. Put Zach in. Let wilson run point

Jan 24, 2023 03:11 AM #361

@DanR nah. Let Dajuan figure this out.

Jan 24, 2023 03:12 AM #362

Good effort, Gradey, but I think that was off Baylor

Jan 24, 2023 03:12 AM #363

Nice trap

Jan 24, 2023 03:12 AM #364

@approxinfinity I know, we need Dajuan's D more than anything right now

Jan 24, 2023 03:13 AM #365

Baylor 16 offensive rebounds - - 13-4- - -on fast break points

Jan 24, 2023 03:13 AM #366

Bill looked up at the scoreboard, like, Oh, we could still win this crapfest

Jan 24, 2023 03:14 AM #367

Joe....... why?

Jan 24, 2023 03:14 AM #368

Yeah Kevin has neither guile nor athleticism to finish when guarded. Remarkable.

Jan 24, 2023 03:14 AM #369

@approxinfinity like JWill last year

Jan 24, 2023 03:14 AM #370

DJs fall gave the whole team and coaching staff a concussion.

Jan 24, 2023 03:14 AM #371

pretty

Jan 24, 2023 03:15 AM #372

no fouls

Jan 24, 2023 03:15 AM #373

All ball

Jan 24, 2023 03:15 AM #374

@RockChalkinTexas i do wonder what might have been for Kevin if he had more time with us.

Jan 24, 2023 03:15 AM #375

BS

Jan 24, 2023 03:16 AM #376

Can't board wortha

Jan 24, 2023 03:16 AM #377

@approxinfinity I don't. Look what Remy did

Jan 24, 2023 03:16 AM #378

well F

Jan 24, 2023 03:16 AM #379

over

Jan 24, 2023 03:16 AM #380

Good shot we got there

Jan 24, 2023 03:17 AM #381

That'll do it. Refs hurt, but too many mistakes when we had a chance

Jan 24, 2023 03:17 AM #382

If you can’t create offense at least learn how to box out! Crazy bad at rebounding.

Jan 24, 2023 03:17 AM #383

@RockChalkinTexas Remy was always a much much better offensive player than Kevin. I just mean on offense he might have grown. But sure Kevin can do great things for us this year but i dont think it will be on offense.

Jan 24, 2023 03:18 AM #384

with all our dysfunction... not really a surprise we can't close games now.

Jan 24, 2023 03:19 AM #385

Look at the numbers I'm not sure how we ended within 20. So that's some sort of positive or something? Idk

Jan 24, 2023 03:19 AM #386

yeah... Bilas.... did he see Duke lost to VT right before this? lol

Jan 24, 2023 03:19 AM #387

Rebounding killed KU tonight. I don't even want to know how many 2nd chance points Baylor had tonight.

Jan 24, 2023 03:20 AM #388

16/16 on FT's.

Jan 24, 2023 03:20 AM #389

Just not used to seeing inferior coaching and playing. Never will get used to it.

RockChalk

Jan 24, 2023 03:20 AM #390

Defense was pretty good in the 2nd half. We hit the freebies. Our bench is basically useless.

Jan 24, 2023 03:21 AM #391

They shot 25 free throws to our 16. Definitely a factor.

Jan 24, 2023 03:21 AM #392

6 of ours were definitely after it was all but over, just sayin

Jan 24, 2023 03:21 AM #393

17 offensive rebounds given up is why we lost.

Doug Sirmons can step on a rake though

Jan 24, 2023 03:22 AM #394

So it will be KSU at home being the game we need to win to stop a 5 game losing streak.

Jan 24, 2023 03:22 AM #395

points off turnovers: BU: 21, KU: 7

Jan 24, 2023 03:23 AM #396

Our players are probably feeling pretty low about themselves right now. Time to get to work, stay hungry and find our confidence, get the next one.

Jan 24, 2023 03:24 AM #397

I like our chances against Kentucky more than any remaining b12 road game

Jan 24, 2023 03:24 AM #398

Coach Q's dad died this am. too.

Jan 24, 2023 03:24 AM #399

At least McCullar made a shot or two. Now it’s time to get Juan back on track.

Jan 24, 2023 03:24 AM #400

@DanR you forget about shibway

Jan 24, 2023 03:26 AM #403

@RockChalkinTexas said in Baylor Game Tonight:

RockChalk

Coaching wasn't the issue tonight in the sense that Self somehow kept this team within striking distancedown the stretch. KU doesn't have a bench and KJ Adams can't rebound for shit. 1 damn defensive rebound from your starting 5. Combine that with him being basically useless on offense the last few games and we're now in the worst case scenario offensively for KU where teams can once again ignore Adams and ignore Harris since he's been useless the last 4 games now.

Jan 24, 2023 03:26 AM #404

At 48-48, refs took over.
Put these last 3 behind you, come out and play loose at Kentucky to get mojo back

Have a better week ahead.
We are supposed to get much needed rain🙏

Jan 24, 2023 03:28 AM #405

@RockChalkinTexas

Love your optimism... but I'm not feeling it in Lexington this year. Hopefully, I reverse jinx them!

Jan 24, 2023 03:29 AM #406

Nah. Probably 20 point beat down in Lexington. But it's meaningless if we get rest this week like coach thinks we apparently need. I personally don't see it with 18-20 yr olds. Lol. But I'm willing to listen

Jan 24, 2023 03:31 AM #407

@drgnslayr if we had filipowski we would have the most punchable face

Jan 24, 2023 03:32 AM #409

@cragarhawk

Actually... a good strategy! Fellas get the week off and just get blistered in Lexington. We pick up more chip and some rest! I'm in for that.

Jan 24, 2023 03:34 AM #410

@drgnslayr I'm really not in for it. Cause I really don't think they need rest. But I'm not the coach. But I don't think that Jan noncon game means shit to CS. So I don't look for him to spend a lot of time on it

Jan 24, 2023 03:40 AM #411

It's not as bad as a stick in the eye. We've been spoiled. Most teams go through this every season. At least your dog didn't run away. I've still got a buck 3 80 left in the bank. Got enough gas in the tank to go back and teach those beautiful children tomorrow. All of you are still my friends but some of you are pushing it! Catchers and pitchers report in a month and the sun is taking longer to tuck itself in at night. Oh and one other thing:

WE'RE THE DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION AND 4 STALWARTS FROM THAT TEAM MOVED ON.

Jan 24, 2023 03:45 AM #412

At some point just realizing you may not be that good and hitting a lot of 3's hides a lot of sin is okay too. Step 1- Identification. Step 2- washing it off.

Control what you can control. Fundamentals and defense

Jan 24, 2023 03:45 AM #413

@wissox refs were bad for both sides….don’t turn it over and rebound we’d win oh and the pg gotta score more then 2 points

Dude is laying eggs right and left

Jan 24, 2023 03:55 AM #414

Dajuan hasnt been the same since getting his brains scrambled. Give the kid a break. Champion.

Jan 24, 2023 03:59 AM #415

@approxinfinity go check previous games before jusr creating some narrative that isn’t true.

He struggled agains osu, ou and Iowa state all well before the ksu game

Champion is a team W it’s like qb wins in nfl. Team won the title and Juan was on it but in order of importance for the W he was probably 6th.

Dave
Remy
Och
Braun
JW

Then Juan

Jan 24, 2023 04:05 AM #416

@kuballin10 remy wasn't second.

Jan 24, 2023 04:08 AM #417

@kuballin10 "We make a great comeback and get screwed by the refs". Read the game thread. About 10 comments in a row after the comeback about this call and that call. Equally bad? Not sure, but my comment was about that critical stretch where we get bumped and nada, and then tap guy on shoulder and ref calls a foul. Pretty egregiously bad reffing there.

Go ahead rag on our point guard. He spectacularly led this team to a national championship. He's hit a bit of a wall here like everyone else besides Jalen but your estimation of how bad he's hurting this team is way off.

And again, your takes would be easier to stomach if you ever thought it was ok to say something good during a game chat, but you're so predictable in when you comment.

Jan 24, 2023 04:16 AM #418

I think CS would strongly disagree with the assessment of Juan's contribution to the NC. It started on the defensive end and it started with Juan. Nearly verbatim

Jan 24, 2023 04:16 AM #419

@Crimsonorblue22 who was and why?

Remy saved us against creighton

Remy definitely saved us against providence

Remy won against unc

Och was shut down by a frosh named Johnson. Had an and 1 and struggled second half go back and watch it. Johnson hit 1-2 threes and outplayed him

Dave - Remy - Och - Braun/JW and then Juan

Jan 24, 2023 04:19 AM #420

@wissox he didn’t lead them

Remy played more minutes against tech in big 12 title and it continued

Juan spurred the comeback with his D but also stepped out of bounds almost costing us late as he sat the last 8-10 minutes as Remy took over.

Juan is an Alex smith type pg. He needs everyone around him to be great to “lead” them to victory. He can’t go manufacture offense on his own.

Give me Frank and Graham all day over a Juan.

Juan is tired Bill has to sub Bobby for Juan not alongside him because Juan is getting abused on D which is normally his strength and turning it over more because he’s gassed

Jan 24, 2023 04:22 AM #421

@cragarhawk yeah he was so good he sat the final 8-10 minutes.

We don’t win it without him but if he plays 39 minutes that game we aren’t holding the trophy.

Juan is good hes played better this year when he’s looking to score unfortunately hes struggling lately.

We got no choice but to let him play through it but the whole “most underrated guard in America” is a bill blind spot and comical. He effects the game in so many ways is just term for he has a few more steals and hockey assists than your average pg

This is Bill’s team and the pg he loves most so curious to see where it takes him and what his opinion is after it

Jan 24, 2023 10:29 AM #424

Very disappointed in Bill for that Technical. Can't happen. Cost his team a chance, as faint as it was. His mess!

Jan 24, 2023 10:47 AM #425

Players not named Dick & Wilson went 6-23 from the field.

Same starters not named Dick & Wilson are 18-50 from the field in last 3 games. The math sucks.

Can't win if 3 starters can't shoot.

My blood pressure is so much lower after deciding not to watch the games live. I look at the score after the game is over. If we won, I watch it (no commercials), if we lost, I go for a hike, go grocery shopping, go to a movie...

Sure, call me a fair weather fan. But it works for me. And I'll live long enough to not watch them lose again.

Jan 24, 2023 01:38 PM #428

@nuleafjhawk

Lucky. Do what works for you. This is not a game you want to throw on not unless you want to live a bit less.

Jan 24, 2023 02:21 PM #429

@Jethro what did I say that’s wrong?

Juan has played poorly for 4 games

KJ has been bad these last 2 games (coincides with teams figuring out how to guard our pick and roll which is dare Juan to shoot and he won’t or when he doesn’t it isn’t well)

JW - a stud

Gradey - he’s growing and battling hard on D and the boards when his shot isn’t falling like the last few games

Kev - struggled badly but last night was better a double double. Hopefully out of his funk

Bobby - awful - needs to be the backup pg not first wing off the bench. He and Juan play together and the lead increases just like it has the last 3 games. 4 guys who can’t score, 2 don’t even look to shoot or even drive the lane and JW

Joe - awful - not the scorer he hoped to be this year

Clemence - weak

Zuby/Udeh/Rice - need more run even though they make stupid frosh mistakes

Bill said it they are bigger than us. We get dominated on the offensive glass every game and KJ’s ability to score 15 has been taken away and he still is an awful rebounder on the defensive end

Yes, you can be a fan and still see the warts. Curious how Bill figures this one out. Guys have regressed offensively and defensively

Jan 24, 2023 03:19 PM #430

Okay.... it's in moments like this that some of us say stuff out of emotion, then often later apologize or get called out when we start playing better again.

This now qualifies as a "dip"... even though we can argue that only the home loss was unexpected.

We've been extremely spoiled ever since our last losses last year including that UK beatdown at AFH.

So if we've been spoiled, don't you think our players have been spoiled? Heck... we (and team) have been living in denial before we started collecting multiple "Ls." We've been winning by just a couple of points every game and then instead of looking at why we weren't pounding these teams we applauded our coolness and ability to finish games.

We've got a bunch of talented guys... but it takes more than that. We've got to turn it up a notch for 40-minutes (not just a few minutes per game).

Being in a tough league pushes us to bring game for 40 minutes. And that's exactly where our mindset has to be for March. Best we learn it now and we still have time to go on a long run in February and regain confidence.

Jan 24, 2023 05:26 PM #431

I’m not reading much into this 3 game skid. From what Self has said, a few times now, is he’s resting the players more this year to play the long game for the conference. With the extra day off that of course means less practice. Duh.

Hopefully the other teams beat each other up throughout the season while we’re more rested in March.

Having said that, there are concerns though but the team is not lost.

Jan 24, 2023 06:58 PM #432

@nuleafjhawk and surprise surprise you still get to watch the vast majority of our games!

Jan 24, 2023 07:00 PM #433

Correct me if I’m wrong, werent we still playing with house money? By my count we are still up a couple hundies! Let it roll!

Jan 24, 2023 07:50 PM #434

@rockchalkwyo agreed we played great to start the year minus southern Utah and TN

It’s more how we are playing right now. If your 1 and 5 aren’t playing well you won’t win many basketball games.

Bill has to get Juan more rest he doesn’t have the stamina to get it done for 35 minutes a night. Bobby needs to be the sub for him and Joe/rice for the wings (granted Rice doesn’t understand simple defensive principles as Bill’s stated plus other credible insiders on this board)

This team can make a run but they gotta get back to the confidence they were playing with.

Jan 24, 2023 07:51 PM #435

@approxinfinity Let's hope!

Jan 24, 2023 08:38 PM #436

@kuballin10 whats your point? Still a champion. Got nothing but love for the kid. Slumps happen. When he was on at the beginning of this season it masked a lot of our problems. Kid was ballin’! And will again.

Jan 24, 2023 09:07 PM #437

@approxinfinity my point was literally stated in my post. Juan needs to rest more and not play 35-40 minutes a night.

Bobby needs to play the 1 more and not play alongside Juan.

Yes, Juan is a champion, so is Teahan. This years team is different than last years so not sure why we are referencing last year. Juan’s role last year versus this year is completely different.

Jan 24, 2023 09:13 PM #438

@kuballin10 maybe you mix in a little too much sour when we lose, it spoils the taste of your point? I can get behind resting Juan a bit and giving Bobby some run at the 1, though he hasnt shown the growth yet to make that entirely comfortable. I felt like you were dogging Juan, and for me its like he’s not playing for me. I’m the fan. So its hard to endorse getting angry at a kid, even though sometimes we all get confused. Its easy for me to keep my head in check w Juan, probably because hes one of my 2 favorite players on this squad.

Also, being a champion is everything. He’s a made man. Yes, I want to win, but hes already got a statue on mainstreet in my head.

Jan 24, 2023 09:21 PM #439

@approxinfinity Yeah we view Juan differently. Juan was the sixth most impactful player on that roster last year. He sat the final 8-10 minutes for a reason. Both are true we don’t win a title without Juan yet Juan wasn’t a top 3 reason we won a title.

He is billed this year as the most underrated guard in America yet averaging 7 ppg. He has to score for this team to be good and he isn’t good at scoring. He has Chris Paul vision but even Chris Paul in college can go get 20-30 when his team couldn’t throw it in the ocean.

Self’s blind spot is evident with his comments raving about Juan and how he doesn’t lose in all their summer games lol.

Juan is a phenomenal kid and overcame a lot. Me outlining him playing poorly isn’t a knock on his character or as a person, just talking about the hawks and the game. Juan could care less what I or anyone thinks except his teammates and coaches.

Bobby billed as the next great KU guard has not been good. Juan doesn’t have the stamina to play every minute yet Bill doesn’t trust the bench or want Bobby running the show (can’t blame him). Yet we keep losing with Juan playing almost the entire game.
This has to change and he needs to let Bobby run the show more even though he is clearly worse than Juan.

Fresh Juan the final 5 minutes is better than a tired Juan who turns it over, has a loose handle and is out of control.

Jan 24, 2023 10:03 PM #440

We've had some pretty good teams over the years where starters played major minutes every night. I'm still just not sure I buy the rest factor with 18-21 yr olds. Especially when you consider almost all of the timeouts these days are lengthy. For media purposes.

It is possible however that CS may have done a lil of that(giving more rest)mid conference last season as well and maybe learned something he liked from it. I'm willing to watch that play out again if so

Either way. This team is still devilish fun to watch. I thought they were just on the edge of really turning it on last night til a stretch of imo absolutely terrible officiating. Never really looked fully amped again after that.

Jan 25, 2023 12:26 PM #441

In other news... GD gets a good write-up at KUSports. He's starting to figure out how to score beyond catch-&-shoot! He's also been rebounding a bit better, too!

If he can become another guy who can make his own shot regardless of being defended (like JWil) then we've got an extra big-time weapon in our offense.

Good things are coming our way... we just have a painful wait!

Jan 25, 2023 05:39 PM #442

@drgnslayr i cant (and wont have to) imagine how filthy a 2nd year Gradey would be

Jan 25, 2023 05:52 PM #443

The hope I still have for this team is that we have 50 days left to have something click for a couple of guys. There are really only two options left on the table for this team to make a deep run in the tournament.

  1. We either get our shit together and the starters start playing well enough to get us back to 1/2 seed contention which will give us the easiest path possible. But this team is in the danger zone a little bit right now... This team isn't as bad as 2021 team with Garrett running point, but the feeling of having no levers to pull and a thin bench bring back some bad memories. A big bounce back statement game from this team would be nice, and frankly is overdue.

or

  1. Bill sort of blows up what we've been doing most of the season and lets the young guys get a lot more run which might cost us some games. Mainly Udeh and Rice. See if those two can get comfortable the last 10 games and we can try to "peak" March 16th. This option is sort of waiving the white flag for the conference race mid-season, but gives us the best chance at a FF run imo. I think it would take losing the next two games in a row for Bill to ever consider doing this. Unfortunately/fortunately depending on your opinion, with the way we've been playing it is a distinct possibility.

This team IS good enough to beat anyone in the country, but the margin for error is just so, so small with how poorly the bench is playing. It has really been a big disappointment to watch pretty much zero improvement from Bobby or Yes. What's worse, is that even with how poorly those two have played we can't hardly see minutes from MJ who might be the only guy on the bench who can actually make a difference in March.

In Bill I trust, but my expectations for this team are essentially nothing more than a sweet 16 at the moment. And I'm pretty sure we will all be holding our breath in the 2nd round...

Jan 25, 2023 05:52 PM #444

@approxinfinity I think we need him back for next year to be up to our normal standards. Of course the floor with Self is like a 4 seed. We are so spoiled.

Jan 25, 2023 06:33 PM #445

Unless we can get the real Juan back not sure how much of all these issues that they are dealing with will be fixed. Self needs his leader playing at the high level he was at because he seems to be the glue holding it all together.

I just hope whatever is ailing Juan is something that will pass. If he's got an injury he's going to manage the rest of the season that really makes it difficult to play at a high level when your PG can't do things he normally can do. He has looked hobbled and shook from mistakes he isn't used to making. Makes you wonder if he did get concussed from that fall

Hoping the 5 days in between games gives them a shot at redemption Saturday

Jan 25, 2023 06:54 PM #446

@BeddieKU23

Good article on him being worn down on KUSports.

I believe it is an accurate assessment. Our Big 12 competitors realize they need to attack the head of the beast.... and that is Juan.

He needs less PT and has his rest break in games monitored at proper timing so he can perform at a maximum.

Hard to recognize this team with Juan being off like this.

I think in the off-season he should work heavily on strength/conditioning. Look what it did for JWil! Juan has the body of a boy and he's facing some stout PGs.

Thing is we can't afford him to be out. - Who is competent of running point when he is out for any extended time? - -NO not Boby, Bobby is a turnover looking for a place to happen. - He is less scoring threat then Juan. I think the most I have ever seen Bobby score is maybe 6 - -MAYBE - -MAYBE 8 points. we can't afford even LESS A THREAT to score then Juan. Bobby is far less the distributor then Juan - so who runs PG when Juan sits ? - -I dunno

Jan 25, 2023 07:36 PM #448

@drgnslayr

It's year 4 for Juan so strength and stamina really shouldn't be the concern here but you may just be seeing the limitations of him physically. Everyone has their breaking point and Juan came to KU needing work on his body.

Ideally Self would trust Bobby more but we have seen he can't really do that without the level of play dropping off, but in order for Bobby to get better you have to let him play the position. A lot of his minutes lately have been alongside Juan and that hasn't done any good either. On the flip side perhaps Bill needs to commit to taking Juan out near every timeout and managing workload in some kind of set pattern because what's happening now isn't working.

Shouldn't other teams be just as tired when we play them? Baylor didn't look gassed at all. KU had a slow December and now by the end of January this team has started cracking at the seams. It doesn't make much sense going from one extreme to the other.

Jan 25, 2023 08:05 PM #449

@jayballer67 @BeddieKU23

Of course it is a bad tradeoff sticking in any reserve for Juan... but compared to leaving him in...

I'd rather have the old Juan for 30 minutes a game then have this one for 36.

I don't think Juan has ever been pushed this hard in past years.

Plus... something never discussed... when you keep tired players in for overuse you run a much higher risk of injury! Imagine Juan going out for the rest of the year?!

Bobby looked great before Big 12 play. Then the competition became much tougher and we face all of these teams who have us totally scouted. He needs more minutes to adjust then he'll contribute more. Same for Joe.

Doing nothing different, at this point, would be a big mistake.

Heck... try starting Bobby once or twice. It's a way to shake things up. Maybe Juan plays better. Maybe Bobby plays better. Win-win.

We need to bite the bitter pill... mix things up a bit. We are already stooping to Self's intentional technical fouls.

It also hurts Juan playing with the bench, example the end of the ksu game. You can figure it out. The starters would have made those plays.

Of course it is a bad tradeoff sticking in any reserve for Juan... but compared to leaving him in...

I'd rather have the old Juan for 30 minutes a game then have this one for 36.

Weel here is a tid bit - - the competition isn't getting any easier. So Bobby playing better before big 12 sure doesn't help us now. Hell I would start Joe at PG before Bobby.- Bobby is no threat now-- he can't shoot outside at all or hasn't shown it, he drives and endds up throwing it away - - jumps off his feet has nowhere to go and throws the ball away - - easy transistion for the other team.

Risk of injury is aHUGE PROBLEM when you have no bench - -the competition is much much harder the rest o the year soo Bobby isn't helping

Message incoming but not a concussion.

I'm rooting for the guy like crazy, but I just can't imagine success with Bobby starting at point right now. I figured he'd be like an Elijah Johnson kind of dude. Sitting on the bench with a load of talent waiting for his chance. But his ball handling is not good. Passing is bad unless you can catch with your knees. I can't tell if he knows how to run the offense let alone knows how to control a game. He's had plenty of chances to run the show and the results have not been good... yet.

Yeah, I know how things ended with EJ too against Michigan, but he carried a load on his shoulders his senior year.

@rockchalkjayhawk lingering injury. Wouldn't expect him back to normal this season.

Drat. Lingering is even worse!

When can Elmarko get here?

Haven't heard of a lingering injury just physical pressure defense and aggressive guards on offense. Pettiford and Joe are trying mostly one on one plays and our slow half court offense requires us to hit threes and bunnies. We need a better and better MJ.

@Zabudda

Kind of like Dave last year. You know he's hobbled but not much is going to be disclosed.

Udeh missed several games recently and we only learned after he had Wisdom Teeth issue. Staff keeping injuries and what not real close

At this point and present time I think we need Joe backing up Juan over Bobby. - -Bobby is a turnover looking for a place to happen at the prsent and no scoring threat at all- -a lot like Juan - -True Joe turns it over too not sure if any more then Bobby but much more of a threat on the offensive end
