Talked to a friend that is a doctor, albeit at another hospital but word travels fast in these communities. He will be okay, not a major thing is what I'm hearing.

Rumor mill was saying heart attack, but from what I've been able to gather this wasn't super serious.

Sucks...hope he gets better and takes his health a bit more serious. That belly has been growing pretty consistent and he always seems pretty red faced.

Heard this very consistently as well.

At least Norm got some practice early in the season if it does end up being an extended period of time. Nothing replaced Bill, but maybe it'll give the guys a little extra motivation.

A smol detail from what I can say with 1000% certainty. Just some vertigo last night and a stroke scare. He’s up and walking, no rehab or anything needed. Had a minor heart procedure last fall, this isn’t related.

Stints and stroke don't go together? Stints are for blockages, right?

@Crimsonorblue22 Two types of strokes, ischemic (blockage), and hemorrhagic (bleed).

For blockages, stent could be used (like carotid artery). They put the collapsed stent in and expand it to open the channel. Not so good for a bleed.

Man, what scary and terrible news. I can’t imagine the stress that his ticker faces week in and week out competing at this level. I’m just watching on tv and mine misses beats watching games. Sending positive vibes out today to coach and his family for a speedy recovery.

Self will not coach the rest of this week.

@BShark Very little info I was waiting for some type of press release with all rumors flying. Hopefully he is able to coach next week and beyond. Stuff like this makes me worried he could retire very soon.

Based on what I've heard about the procedure and typical recovery times, if he wants to coach in the 1 vs 16 game he should be able to.

Maybe he should take whatever that spammer was selling on our site this morning.

Did anyone else freak out and this of Mike Leech when this broke?

This is as likely to extend his career... maybe it's a wake-up call and he puts more focus and energy on his lifestyle health choices.

It's things like this that could very well make him think harder- - retire sooner. - Stop and think about it, I had said maybe 5-7 more years - been stated that he didn't want to be one of these long time things - -wants to be able to enjoy the wife , travel and enjoy grandkids. - This game can be very , very stressful. you think about having to put up with al the BS from the NCAA everyday - - being on the road so much away from family dealing with recruiting and 18-19 yrs old thought process and how you have to constantly stay on top of them,. Just a lot of pressure- then STILL nothing about the ruling of these so called infractions weighing on you.

With this whole thing with these possible infractions and having this problem he could very easily say - -screw it -sooner then he had planned originally

@Crimsonorblue22 I think he will, but I also think he will be prioritizing staying calmer on the sidelines. Since Fran told us 15 times yesterday that Harris could coach the team, I suspect HCBS will allow more on-court decision making next year. (Actually, Fran notwithstanding, I do think this, and think we may see similar grooming of players in that mold in the future.)

I'm guessing he didn't have open heart surgery, norm did talk to him. His daughter and fam were at game, Cindy and Tyler were with coach.

It will be interesting when it's all said and done if he returns this Season or not. - Pretty quick re-run if he does. I bet they would advise him not to. - -health more important then Coaching

I expect him for round 1 of the NCAA tourney.

Several media outlets are reporting that Self did a zoom call with the team both before and after the ISU victory. I’d say that is good sign.

I heard he told them he'd be with them for next week.

Coach Townsend said after the Game that he had talked with Coach and they agreed and what they wanted to play I guess defense wise and such against Iowa State and he said Coach had told the guys how proud of them he was for the defense -Hopefully he can make it back for the NCAA'S

I'd rather Self not coach Thursday because the team doesn't need him to beat Howard. Let Self focus on game planning for Arkansas/Illinois instead and rejoin the bench on Saturday.

He is in Des Moines. No decision has been made yet regarding if he will coach or not.

He'll be fine. His groin will be sore. Might be a little hard to walk for awhile.

It's actually the opposite. He feels better than he has in a long time.

Not really different. You feel real bad because your arteries are blocked. So you go the cath lab and they remove the blockage and place a stent that allows your blood to flow. So you feel much better. He probably hates the new diet, which is understandable. They have him on Plavix which thins the blood, and prevents future thrombosis. The only concern is the spot on the groin/leg where they went in. But they're using plugs now that make the wound much more stable. I know these things- I have 8 heart stents!

My question is: he had two stents put in - were they in the same place, or was it two different arteries? I had double stents put in at the same time on my widowmaker artery, and almost croaked. 98% blockage. If it was 2 arteries, then that's much better.

@mayjay I can be coach's coach. Hell, I went to bed at halftime of the National Championship game last year. Calm.

@Jethro Now a days they are doing these procedures through the wrist which is less painful.

He drove because he just had surgery. Flying can sometimes cause bloodclots, so it's never recommended soon after. the big question is...will he have to drive to Vegas?

Bill isn't doing the press conference today. Would imagine Norm is coaching tomorrow.

JUST gonna be interesting , was listening to local sports media and like they said bigger picture here, ya we can get by Howard then just have to see what happens , a we know how Coach is during a game when things are not going good -he get's pretty worked up pretty excited -the Bigger picture they say is were talking about a guys life in this situation - -it's more about Jimmy's and Joe's then X's and O's

If it comes down to it and can't Coach this weekend then it is what it is -- bigger picture then Basketball

He should have me assist him on the bench. I guarantee I can rip players' and refs' arses at least as good as he can! I'll do his screaming... my face will turn red and purple... I'll have these guys begging for Self to do it next time. :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes: Norm is too mellow!

I heard he was completely released, it was on coach. When this happens, any kind of heart incident, it scares the crud out of you. My dad thought every lil thing was another heart thing. It took awhile before he could chill and enjoy his life.

Might be good for coach to ease in on this first game than jump in on the tougher game. Get his feet wet!

Maybe someone is cleaning the Madden Cruiser for Las Vegas.

Yea, i'm scared for him!

The only reason Bill didn't do the press conference today is he did not want to upstage his players, his team, and the game by taking 30 questions about his health. Hall of Fame guy - thinking about his team, not himself. He will absolutely coach tomorrow.
