@BShark WHAT?

Mar 09, 2023 02:35 PM #4

Talked to a friend that is a doctor, albeit at another hospital but word travels fast in these communities. He will be okay, not a major thing is what I'm hearing.

Mar 09, 2023 02:36 PM #5

Officially out now

Mar 09, 2023 02:40 PM #6

Illness. Or heart attack?

Obviously one changes things more than the other for the team moving forward.

Either way of course, well wishes to Coach Self for a speedy recovery

Mar 09, 2023 02:40 PM #7

wow. just hope he's ok.

Rumor mill was saying heart attack, but from what I've been able to gather this wasn't super serious.

Mar 09, 2023 02:46 PM #9

No myocardial infarction thank god.

"A source with knowledge of Self’s condition told the Journal-World that the long-term prognosis was positive. "

Mar 09, 2023 02:53 PM #11

Sucks...hope he gets better and takes his health a bit more serious. That belly has been growing pretty consistent and he always seems pretty red faced.

@BShark said in Bill Self Heart Attack:

Yes, very thankful it's not that

Mar 09, 2023 03:11 PM #13

Bet he gets a stint. As long as the wound in the groin holds up, he should be back tomorrow.

Mar 09, 2023 03:13 PM #14

I should send him some nattokinase. That is a better blood thinner than Plavix.

Mar 09, 2023 03:47 PM #15

@BShark you think he had chest pains, found some blockage and they did a stint?

Mar 09, 2023 03:47 PM #16

Very connected poster on the phog is also saying Self will be okay.

@BShark heart related? And soon?

Mar 09, 2023 03:48 PM #19

@Crimsonorblue22 yes heart related

Mar 09, 2023 03:59 PM #20

It’s not serious. No timetable or anything but Coach will be fine.

Heard this very consistently as well.

At least Norm got some practice early in the season if it does end up being an extended period of time. Nothing replaced Bill, but maybe it'll give the guys a little extra motivation.

A smol detail from what I can say with 1000% certainty. Just some vertigo last night and a stroke scare. He’s up and walking, no rehab or anything needed. Had a minor heart procedure last fall, this isn’t related.

Mar 09, 2023 04:27 PM #24

@FarmerJayhawk

Thanks for keeping us updated

Mar 09, 2023 04:29 PM #25

Sounds like he should be discharged before the end of the weekend.

From 247 board, very knowledgeable poster.

Mar 09, 2023 06:53 PM #30

Stints and stroke don't go together? Stints are for blockages, right?

Mar 09, 2023 06:57 PM #31

@Crimsonorblue22 He didn't have a stroke.

Mar 09, 2023 07:05 PM #32

@Crimsonorblue22 Two types of strokes, ischemic (blockage), and hemorrhagic (bleed).

For blockages, stent could be used (like carotid artery). They put the collapsed stent in and expand it to open the channel. Not so good for a bleed.

Mar 09, 2023 08:29 PM #33

Man, what scary and terrible news. I can’t imagine the stress that his ticker faces week in and week out competing at this level. I’m just watching on tv and mine misses beats watching games. Sending positive vibes out today to coach and his family for a speedy recovery.

Mar 09, 2023 09:31 PM #34

Self will not coach the rest of this week.

@BShark Very little info I was waiting for some type of press release with all rumors flying. Hopefully he is able to coach next week and beyond. Stuff like this makes me worried he could retire very soon.

Based on what I've heard about the procedure and typical recovery times, if he wants to coach in the 1 vs 16 game he should be able to.

Mar 10, 2023 01:20 AM #38

Maybe he should take whatever that spammer was selling on our site this morning.

Mar 10, 2023 04:26 AM #39

Did anyone else freak out and this of Mike Leech when this broke?

Mar 10, 2023 04:22 PM #40

This is as likely to extend his career... maybe it's a wake-up call and he puts more focus and energy on his lifestyle health choices.

It's things like this that could very well make him think harder- - retire sooner. - Stop and think about it, I had said maybe 5-7 more years - been stated that he didn't want to be one of these long time things - -wants to be able to enjoy the wife , travel and enjoy grandkids. - This game can be very , very stressful. you think about having to put up with al the BS from the NCAA everyday - - being on the road so much away from family dealing with recruiting and 18-19 yrs old thought process and how you have to constantly stay on top of them,. Just a lot of pressure- then STILL nothing about the ruling of these so called infractions weighing on you.

With this whole thing with these possible infractions and having this problem he could very easily say - -screw it -sooner then he had planned originally

Mar 10, 2023 04:43 PM #42

@jayballer67 If his health drives Self out, we should make sure @approxinfinity forwards the "Who will replace Self?" thread to Girod so he can get a head start.

Mar 10, 2023 06:36 PM #43

So, do we not believe he will make a full recovery?

Mar 10, 2023 07:23 PM #44

@Crimsonorblue22 I think he will, but I also think he will be prioritizing staying calmer on the sidelines. Since Fran told us 15 times yesterday that Harris could coach the team, I suspect HCBS will allow more on-court decision making next year. (Actually, Fran notwithstanding, I do think this, and think we may see similar grooming of players in that mold in the future.)

Good Idea , he needs to listen to us - we can pick a goat lol

Mar 10, 2023 08:07 PM #46

So is it our belief that he received a stint or two?

If so, not sure that impacts his abilities to coach in his current style. I think it relates more to him improving his lifestyle choices relating to his health... meaning mostly diet.

Mar 10, 2023 08:34 PM #47

I'm guessing he didn't have open heart surgery, norm did talk to him. His daughter and fam were at game, Cindy and Tyler were with coach.

It will be interesting when it's all said and done if he returns this Season or not. - Pretty quick re-run if he does. I bet they would advise him not to. - -health more important then Coaching

I'd rather Self not coach Thursday because the team doesn't need him to beat Howard. Let Self focus on game planning for Arkansas/Illinois instead and rejoin the bench on Saturday.

Mar 14, 2023 10:47 PM #61

He is in Des Moines. No decision has been made yet regarding if he will coach or not.

Mar 14, 2023 10:56 PM #62

@BShark it Will interesting from the stand point most doctors probably wouldn’t want you to get in a high stress situation for a month in his shape

It's actually the opposite. He feels better than he has in a long time.

Mar 15, 2023 11:18 AM #68

@Jethro I’m not a doctor by any stretch of imagination but I do know a few people that have had stents put in. Every situation is a little bit different I’m sure. Hopefully he can coach Saturday.

Mar 15, 2023 11:53 AM #69

@kjayhawks said in Bill Self Healthy, Rejoining Team For NCAA Tournament.:

Every situation is a little bit different I’m sure.

Not really different. You feel real bad because your arteries are blocked. So you go the cath lab and they remove the blockage and place a stent that allows your blood to flow. So you feel much better. He probably hates the new diet, which is understandable. They have him on Plavix which thins the blood, and prevents future thrombosis. The only concern is the spot on the groin/leg where they went in. But they're using plugs now that make the wound much more stable. I know these things- I have 8 heart stents!

Mar 15, 2023 12:00 PM #70

My question is: he had two stents put in - were they in the same place, or was it two different arteries? I had double stents put in at the same time on my widowmaker artery, and almost croaked. 98% blockage. If it was 2 arteries, then that's much better.

Mar 15, 2023 12:18 PM #71

@mayjay I can be coach's coach. Hell, I went to bed at halftime of the National Championship game last year. Calm.

Mar 15, 2023 12:20 PM #72

@Jethro Now a days they are doing these procedures through the wrist which is less painful.

Mar 15, 2023 12:30 PM #73

@nuleafjhawk What is your plan for sleepind in game 1 at 1.pm your time? Gotta go with anything that works!

Mar 15, 2023 01:26 PM #74

@mayjay Please - PLEASE - don't let us be behind at halftime on Thursday.

Mar 15, 2023 01:37 PM #75

Wondering which game will see his return? Don’t know for certain what he had done, but the pressure of NCAA basketball is heavy. Should he skip the tournament?

Not sure , do know that he did not travel to Des Moines with the team. They flew - -Coach by Car. - Interesting ,Coaching contests like the pressure of tourney game pretty stressful so not sure. He might sit out the Howard game - -But then you got either Illinois/Arkansas - -either one of these not good. Just don't know if it's a good idea in the long run. He drove because he just had surgery. Flying can sometimes cause bloodclots, so it's never recommended soon after. the big question is...will he have to drive to Vegas?

He may have to rock the Huggy Bear stool.

Mar 15, 2023 05:20 PM #88

JUST gonna be interesting , was listening to local sports media and like they said bigger picture here, ya we can get by Howard then just have to see what happens , a we know how Coach is during a game when things are not going good -he get's pretty worked up pretty excited -the Bigger picture they say is were talking about a guys life in this situation - -it's more about Jimmy's and Joe's then X's and O's

If it comes down to it and can't Coach this weekend then it is what it is -- bigger picture then Basketball

I heard he was completely released, it was on coach. When this happens, any kind of heart incident, it scares the crud out of you. My dad thought every lil thing was another heart thing. It took awhile before he could chill and enjoy his life.

Mar 15, 2023 07:39 PM #92

Might be good for coach to ease in on this first game than jump in on the tougher game. Get his feet wet!

Mar 15, 2023 11:05 PM #95

The only reason Bill didn't do the press conference today is he did not want to upstage his players, his team, and the game by taking 30 questions about his health. Hall of Fame guy - thinking about his team, not himself. He will absolutely coach tomorrow.

Mar 16, 2023 03:36 AM #96

@Jethro

I can imagine that.

Plus... I don't think he gets his jollies doing pressers. Now he has a good excuse to pass it on to Norm. Plus... I think he likes giving Norm some attention, too.
