Took me a while to write my game chat. We'll use yours!

Well todays the day we exceed our expectations! We will be favored according to seed, but I’d assume oddsmakers don’t like us so we’re the underdog. Maybe Bill can rally the troops and pull off a stunner. Being seeded so highly I assume we have spent very few NCAA tournament days as the underdog according to seeds. Lets hope they come out firing on all cylinders.

I’ll be interested to see Gonzaga play. One of their guys Braden Huff is from the west burbs here. He was part of an all time great team, only loss was a buzzer beater against Bronny’s team in front of 10000 here at the gym where DePaul plays.

Mark Few and Bill Self were both born on the same day in 1962. There’s a Zag with the last name Few whom I assume is another guy who probably doesn’t need NIL money and who probably got the position because of the name on the back of his shirt.

Anyways, I hope everyone enjoys this one. Don’t get too stressed if it doesn’t go well. @Crimsonorblue22 told me to not worry about, she’s got a great feeling about it. Bill Self’s gonna fix this mess so even stalwarts like @nuleafjhawk can get back on board with the Jayhawks.

Gonzaga is 22-0 when shooting the 3 ball better than 30% this season. We must guard the perimeter much better today. Not thinking we will be able to score 90 plus points again.

I like Elmarko being aggressive, I’d like to see his percentage on that pull up of his think it’s like 75%. He just got too sped up with Samfords pressure. We forsure need him to just have a decent game.

Key for me is for Hunter not to get in foul trouble, he needs to stay on the court.

• need Hunter to score and rebound - should happen, but he also needs to guard better - less likely
• need Harris to steady the team - check and look for his shot - less likely
• need Timberlake to knock down shots - probably will happen, and not get lost on defense - 🫣 or over aggressive on offense.
• need Parker to give Hunter a solid blow - 50/50
• need Elmarko to play under control - 60/40 it’ll happen.
• need Furphy to play an entire game at a high level - 20/80 he does.

If the right combo of things get checked ku wins - but if Gonzaga gets hot from three it’ll look not so great for the good guys. Let’s see who’s tuned up to play today! This is very winnable

@dylans for some reason Furphy is good in the first half but seems to disappear in the second. Believe he had 8 points in the first 4 minutes Thursday, then disappeared for much of the rest.

zags are pressuring d2…going under every screen and back in his hip pocket immediately and he wilts because he can’t create separation or hit a 3 (he doesn’t even look) or hit a step back jumper or anything besides a set shot.

Dude has the offensive skills of d2 but that’s offensive to many d2 guys he’s probably more naia. His rare fancy layups wows the crowd but the rest of his struggles go unnoticed

I'll give some credit to Timberlake. Obviously not the close anyone wanted but he strung together some decent performances which is impressive given the largely godawful body of work that was provided for the majority of the season

It really just came down to shooting and defense. I don’t think we guarded worth a hoot. I’m not sure they guarded great. According to the shot chart we missed about 20 shots within 5 feet. We actually made 9 threes and they made 8. We just turned into a bad defensive team in January and I don’t understand why we just didn’t move to obtain position. If you go watch the UK, Tennessee or UConn game we look good on that end.

@kjayhawks a 20+ point ass whoopin personally doesn't make that seem too important at the moment.

A stat I hate is Self continues to struggle miserably in second games of the weekend. We have gone home now 4 of the past 5 tournaments in the round of 32. I know he has a losing record in the elite 8 but this round can’t be much over .500 at this point.

@rockchalkjayhawk in all fairness the d was much of the same. They actually scored less in the second half we just couldn’t hit shots to save our lives.

Yea, I was afraid our lights out shooting would cool off. They looked very beatable too. Eff.

@rockchalkjayhawk yes when you look at the stats their 2 point shooting was the difference. We actually made more 3s and only had 6 less rebounds shooting literally half of what they did. We had a ton of good looks as well. Wide open 3s and layups. It’s the same game as the first half if we make those.

Ran out of gas. Playing a very fast pace with the starters a full 40 minutes on Thursday to playing a very fast pace the first half today at elevation with essentially 6 players and the second half, they were missing stuff short and moving slower so they just ran out of gas. You could also see it coming in the 1st half too towards the end with Gonzaga getting a bunch of easy looks at the rim.

Even aside for the skill perspective, having playable depth next season has to be the top priority in recruiting.

in short, we shot exceptionally well in the first half and exceptionally poorly in the second half.

Gonzaga shot consistently well throughout the game.

Shame on our defense. But even with great D, not sure we could win given our abysmal shooting.

That's what I was saying in the 2nd hlf. - -Few's halftime speech - - RUN , RUN , RUN , push the Pace Ku had nothing left to give way to easy. As you said no legs- nothing they were done

Thanks, I agree that the team is quite physical, but that seems to be rewarded in the tournament, and combined with relentless depth it can dictate the terms of the game, like what VCU did to us, or what VCU did to Duke when they had Eric Maynor.

It should be a lot more fun watching Duke get beat up than KU or Wisconsin.

Which schools in our league do u think teach flopping? I think, ksu, Baylor, isu and Houston. Maybe TT. I haven't seen enough of our new schools to tell. Biggest pet peeve is jumping into the D when they r shooting.

IMHO, schools are teaching a defensive plan of “hack, grab and push” because refs can’t (or won’t) call all of them fouls. Witnes the first half of the last Houston game with over 20 fouls then not many in the second half. Also, the crud that HD had to put up with inside. The players are good enough to play better defense without all the major physicality. It takes away from the game for me. I know KU does some of it but not like what I saw with Houston, BYU, etc.

Let me just say and nothing personal bud, but as a former referee myself let me ask you this. I can tell you that IF the fans wanted the refs could called SOMETHING every single time down the floor , if that's what you want - - - is that the type of game you want to watch ? -A foul or some kind of violation every trip up and down the floor ? -Cause they could do that.

IF they was to do that , then you would have just as many people bitching about it being called that way and complaining about , dam let them play. - -It is really hard for teams to get ANY kind of Rythm , flow to the game if that were to happen.

Now Idealistically in the " Perfect Game " - you would never even know the refs are there - - -BUT that's not happening. With the physicality of today's games and athletes just not happening. - -If you let them play , call it loose then sooner then later - - -somebody gonna get hurt, possibly bad. - -Yet if you call it close then you have John Q Public bitching about letting them play , a no win situation.

When I was officiating - -when we talked with the Captains before tip , we would always tell them move your feet, don't reach , flop or hold - -you all know the game. You do these things - -it's going to get called. -Genral rule, it's a lot better/easier to call it close at the beginning of a game instead of letting it go most of the game and then try to tighten things up in the end of a game. You tell them in the beginning they already know - -you do that it's getting called - -they won't or at least 3/4 of the time don't if they know HOW it's being called.

@jayballer67 - My point is that coaches are teaching this sort of defense. Not blaming the refs at all.

My pet peeve?

I mentioned that a few years ago where I was talking about the frustration from almost 50 years ago in one game where Herb Nobles ('75-'77) committed 5 fouls. Every one in the act of shooting a made basket, and every one with a made FT resulting in a 3-point play. If you are going to foul, at least make them miss!

Btw @kjayhawks i think you posted a vid of the screaming guy talking about Bill Self. While i agree that our d sucked against the Zags, the other screamer guy vid was about Calipari, and Kentucky finished with an AdjD for the season of 111th, Kansas was 17th. Big difference. I dont hang this one on Self’s Xs and Os.
Our AdjO was 67th and we couldnt shoot for shit.

This was KU’s worst record/season since 1989. There were only 2 big12 teams with records better than KU this season. We are so fortunate to enjoy this era of KU basketball.

@approxinfinity I posted that to mess with Ballin. I think our defense was solid first half of the year, just fell apart later stages for some reason. Some of it was Kevin vs Timberlake defensively, that didn’t work well lol.

Dodged the dead weight of adding a basketball only school (like KU!) to the Big12. Is the new Pac12 even a step up?
