If the weather forecast is correct, watching this live will be a no-go for me. 0.4-0.75 inches of ice. That very well may be a good thing the way the team has been playing.

OK, i give. why would 0.4-0.75 inches of ice stop you from watching?

Jan 04, 2025 08:31 PM #3

Power outages.

Jan 04, 2025 08:33 PM #4

Ah. Gotcha. Come on out to the sunny west coast. You only have earthquakes, wildfires and tsunamis to contend with. Ice free.

Oh, and we've oddly added tornadoes to our weather lately. crazy.

Jan 04, 2025 08:41 PM #5

@rockchalkjayhawk I was in San Francisco several years ago down at the Wharf and learned about a tsunami warning hours later that occurred in the area without any real warning given. How often do the warnings occur and have there been any tsunamis that have caused serious damage on the west coast?

Jan 04, 2025 08:55 PM #6

They have got us in a blizzard warning and heavy snow 6-12 inches on top of IOce, good chance of wide power outages. We have been getting freezing drizzle & now freezing light rain and suppose to turn to heavy snow over night and through tomorrow. Not looking good

I am astounded you West Coasters continue to live in utter ignorance of the threat posed by aliens. The little green Martians, not immigrants.

@mayjay you mean frogs?

Jan 05, 2025 12:09 AM #9

This game has almost a must win sort of feel to it already. I still believe in this team but the egg layed on Tuesday means it's not out of the realm of possibility of an 0-2 record. I'm gonna go out on a limb and believe that a laser focused Jayhawk team bounces back and starts making us believe again.

But wow, what a December that was. 2-3 record. Bad loss to our bitter rival. Blow outs suffered back to back. Inability to protect home court.

I can say the earthquake warning system out here is loud and clear. Your phone beeps like crazy. But the tsunami warning system maybe needs some work. I don't live on the coast, but i assume there are some blaring sirens if a big serious one is on the way. TV and the internet of course scream loudly about it.

Often times when we get tsunami warnings, it turns out to be not much of anything. A barely noticeable or not even visible wave or higher tide.

Since i've been in California since the late 90s, i recall maybe four tsunamis that have caused damage -- $100 million for the last big one up and down the coast. They tear up harbors and tied up boats.

Now Florida on the other hand ... one time we visited and one of the first things we saw while admiring the ocean view was a giant water spout! run for the hills! Wait, they have no hills in Florida.

There's gonna be an eruption in Lawrence if we lose to UCF for the 2nd year in a row followed by an exploding fan base.

Jan 05, 2025 02:30 AM #13

Roads are pretty much impassable at this point in central Kansas. I’m just hoping we keep power, the wind is supposed to pick up overnight which could be a problem.

Jan 05, 2025 02:50 AM #14

@kjayhawks was just listening to live stream of the weatherman here in Topeka , doing a live stream. He said he was going to stay on the low side of snow amounts but don't be surprised, he said he was going with 7-14 inches , BUT there has been latest models- - multiple models saying we could get two foot maybe more-- Historic storm. Tomorrow suppose to snow heave most the day , and 35 - to 45 mph winds for blizzard conditions more then likely multiple power outages that could last for days, Stay safe my friend

Jan 05, 2025 03:16 AM #15

@SlimShaddy54 yes sir you as well

Jan 05, 2025 07:47 AM #16

WVU torched us during the first 10 min taking advantage of the switch up top and wide open dunks. When the opponents don't make the pass I'm thinking hey stupid he's wide open again. That cost us the game and our heroic run in the second half fizzled out on about four bad plays in a row after that.
My point is that we can defend until the cows come home or away but if we are bricking threes and missing shots in the lane to begin the game. It doesn't matter when we are averaging one point a minute.
Our new guards are not new to the game and sure as heck can shoot them as they did in the past.
And the KJ thing is not bashing him even though it feels like it is. Flory is our only hope as he limits second chance points and by God he frees up Hunter who can and score a lot. We want it we need it we feel it and something else I forget.
Sorry about the dangerous weather I hope everyone and your loved ones stay safe and warm.

Jan 05, 2025 07:59 PM #22

I don't have a clue about this game. 75-74 Jayhawks. I really want to say 60-59.

Jan 05, 2025 08:08 PM #23

Just because I can't stand the thought of a 2 game losing streak to a directional Florida school and already to a directional Virginia school, I'm gonna go out on a limb and give us a 76-75 win because @Zabudda already took my prediction.

Jan 05, 2025 08:10 PM #24

Remember if you do social media with Central Florida fans make sure you refer to them as that and not UCF because they think Central Florida makes them sound like a directional commuter school, which they are. So it's always Central Florida.

Jan 05, 2025 09:33 PM #90

Jan 05, 2025 09:34 PM #91

Jan 05, 2025 09:34 PM #92

I also believe I heard the announcers say Moore got the start today because of his defensive abilities which he is a top 2 defender on this team.

Jan 05, 2025 09:34 PM #93

This is what we get for halftime on ESPN+?

Jan 05, 2025 09:34 PM #94

Also curious if UCF is going to keep fronting Hunter and Flory because that isn't working for them.

Jan 05, 2025 09:37 PM #95

We still have to come out ready to go here, believe we lead by 10-12 at the half last season.

Jan 05, 2025 09:38 PM #96

@Texas-Hawk-10 ahhh hard for me to believe that, you?

Jan 05, 2025 09:42 PM #97

Jan 05, 2025 09:43 PM #98

@stoptheflop you have to take what the defense is giving you as @Texas-Hawk-10 said if they continue to front our big men, it’s just too easy

Jan 05, 2025 09:45 PM #99

Flory needs more minutes that is clear.

I mean, maybe about the roles?

I'll admit i was worried about the offense with Shaq starting today. I thought that left us down to Zeke as the only starter who could score other than Hunter in the post.

I'm gonna guess that Self uses that 5th starter spot as he needs to each game. Could see the lineup change depending on matchups? We'll find out i suppose.

A nice way to start the new year. Expectations are now up!

Jan 06, 2025 03:27 AM #206

@SlimShaddy54 it worked well today so I wouldn’t change it, Rylan seem to be better off the bench in this one. I’m thinking Storr will start to step it up and take most of Diggys minutes.

Jan 06, 2025 11:15 AM #207

Wonder if Moore getting the start was matchup based, UCF runs a 3-guard lineup so matching that could have been what they thought was the best move. Perhaps also signaling a scheme change on offense given the struggles there? What doesn't make much sense is how he played 2 minutes in the previous game then gets his first start and most minutes of the season in this one. I would say he did fine, the 6 assists were a plus including the dime he dropped into Flory for a dunk, he also made a couple 3's late in the game to show off his shooting.

I want to see "more" from Moore since he is such an unknown still. I'm still picturing this aggressive driving guard that will give us an element we don't have who can put pressure on defenses and get to the line/finish/get Hunt/Flory/KJ easy baskets. I'm hoping that's what he can provide on that side of the ball while being a pesky defender on the perimeter to go with Harris.

Jan 06, 2025 11:19 AM #208

UCF seems like a roller coaster team. Have wins over Kenpom #12 and #14 teams (Texas A&M & Texas Tech) including the Tech game on the road in their previous game and then they come home and get walloped by 51. At least from the jump KU came out throwing punches and they didn't have the same juice. UCF is #81 Kenpom so the metrics don't think too highly of them so not sure what to take from this win in the bigger picture. It was a great response from the West Virginia game. Self got their attention and I hope it was the turning point to seeing this level of play more often.

Jan 06, 2025 11:26 AM #209

Next opponent Arizona St has two five-star freshman KU recruited to various degrees in Joson Sanon & Jayden Quaintance. Kenpom #57 team with #34 ranked defense so we'll see how we do against a top 40 defense. Their leading scorer is a 6'9 big who can shoot the 3 (38%) and loves to get to the FT line. Hopefully we bring some of the same juice as yesterday at home this time and make another statement.

Jan 06, 2025 12:19 PM #210

@BeddieKU23 They were around 60 before this loss iirc. This was obviously an insane game. KU jumped 5 spots which basically never happens this late in the season.

Jan 06, 2025 01:25 PM #211

@BShark I saw that in the Ken Pom rankings too. Never seen it before with a team ranked so highly at this point of a season—we jumped from 13 to 8.

Jan 06, 2025 02:13 PM #212

@BShark

An historic one-off type game, that's crazy. I know this UCF team is better than they showed yesterday as I've watched them play a few times and have seen a much higher level of play from them. They just seemed shellshocked by the level of activity from KU which was a 360 from our previous game.

Jan 06, 2025 03:38 PM #213

KU just came our really aggressive from the start ,We just looked like we played angry ball, just dominant. KJ NINE REBOUNDS ? I'll take that all day long , the question being where has this been all this time ?- -hopefully it continues, really like Shaq in the line up good play , really like the make up of the team yesterday,

Coach said that chances are we will see more of Hunter and Flory together, Flory being mobile and able to guard out on the floor.- - Love Flory being an athlete, King Mcclure told KU fans not to get used to seeing Flory long. - -I do think Flory will be NBA - -but I also think he will be back for his 2nd year , after that all bets are off lol.

Jan 06, 2025 04:30 PM #216

GOOD NEWS / BAD NEWS

Good -

Hunt went hunting. Great to see him play aggressively and it paid huge dividends.

KJ showed effort. I almost passed out when seeing him seal off the boards. Who does he think he is? Charles Barkley? 9 rebounds! As I mentioned before… we won’t lose many games where he grabs around 10 boards.

Juan was Juan. He went with the flow and was the glue guy. Great!

Moore defended. It helped lift our guys up and they all showed more energy! Offense starts with defense! A+

Flory owns everyone. I thought he had 10 blocks because he was so dominant! This guy needs more minutes!

AJ fit a bit better. Didn’t look so lost out there and found ways to contribute. Positive sign!

Rylan brought offense! This is what he can do! BAM!

Zeke was human after all. Not big scoring numbers but huge assists and aiding team basketball.

Diggy helped more than the stat sheet. Cold from outside but he gave us great energy off the bench.

This was an example of how we can play when we come prepared for a game! Energy was great and played team basketball!

THE BAD -

UCF played horribly. We deserve some of the cred for making that happen but not all. Their body language was horrible and they didn’t put up any kind of fight. My takeaway is they made us look better than we are. We will run into tougher dog fights that will better test where we are…

FINAL ASSESSMENT -

It starts with defense! Moore and Flory are big sparks! KJ can be, too, when he hustles! Having those guys focus on D makes us a tough bunch to beat and it translates to everyone playing tougher D. Offense comes naturally when playing good D.

Jan 06, 2025 05:16 PM #217

We saw today why we were picked #1 preseason which is this roster is loaded. I wasn't familiar with Shak, Griffen, Storr, Coit or Zeke. I kept hearing KU fans will love Flory because he can run the court and has a big motor. We can now add fast learner to that list. I saw that opponents played him very physically which I thought he resented and now doesn't work as a tactic. Not a lot of floor time for him but he picked up the defense quickly and true to his smarts played it to the max. As we've seen he takes ownership of mistakes and that's a big reason why he is so good. I mentioned before his presence on the floor especially defensively frees up the big dog to be in rebound position and make his top level outlet passes. Can we imagine him as a 14/10/4 guy? Shak played a sneaky good game and will be a huge difference maker as a ball handler, passer, scorer and all around speed demon. Will Storrs, who was projected to be our big guard perimeter defender who could even guard a 4 if needed and Griffen who has been in the big time take over and run with it now with penetration and bombs away? Juan may finally get the pieces we were hoping for and stir up a storm. Big time defender type teams like ISU and Houston can't shut us down when our guys are as good or better than theirs. But it was just one game. One 50 point beat down game. Which is more impressive/surprising our 99 or their 48?

Jan 06, 2025 05:31 PM #218

We need to make sure we get a 2nd year from Flory. Hunt's NIL goes to him, whatever it takes. Pairing him with DP and whoever else next year could be scary. Those highlights from yesterday are a glimpse of his future. Sure, he can't really shoot outside 4 feet right now and KU's system is absolutely setup for a guy with his attributes to flourish. He's a plus defender, plus athleticism and finishes at the rim at an elite level so far (81.6%). I don't know how draftable he is right now, as is but I'm certainly paying attention now if he strings more of these kind of games together. The lightbulb has certainly come on for him and is fun to watch.

Jan 06, 2025 05:37 PM #219

@Zabudda I remember in his preseason interview his reason for wanting to come to Kansas was to be coached by Bill Self. He has total respect for him.

Jan 06, 2025 05:57 PM #220

@BeddieKU23

To be able to finish at the rim 81%. Come on now, to do that you are finishing through contact which is usually a learning process for freshmen. To be already able to play at the level he does thank goodness. I can't define his level as it keeps going up.

Jan 06, 2025 06:18 PM #221

I like interesting stats and Flory is certainly giving us some. He's missed 9 shots this season. Obviously he's a low volume guy yet that's out of 49 shots. That seems to indicate a brain that is either afraid Bill will yank him if he misses or a brain that tells him, I'm only shooting if I know I'll make it. I wish I had a brain like that when I play basketball!

He's being compared to Doke and his 46% FT shooting is on par with Doke. Not many guys have a FT % that is over 30% lower than their FG%.

Yesterday he padded his blocks stat, but he now is averaging 1.2 per game. That's a nice number for most players, but he does that while averaging 13 minutes per game.

If you extrapolate his fouls he would be fouling out every game if he played 40 minutes a game. Maybe coaches are like don't worry about fouls because you're not playing enough minutes for you to foul out, but 2 fouls per 13 minutes is a lot.

Before we send him off to the NBA he's had some recent 'duds'. They coincided with the losing streak in December coupled with the win against NCS. 3 points total in those three games. Those three games are his only games in which he's scored less than 6 points.

I hope he stays obviously. I also hoped Grady and Johnny would have stayed as well and that didn't go so well. Pay the man so we see him here another year or three!

It basically takes a perfect storm for a game like that. It was a good match-up for KU to begin with and then UCF's gameplan on both ends made little sense.

I love Shak - quick, defends and PUSHES the ball up the floor and ATTACKS (he’s the opposite of d2)

I wouldn’t get too high or think it’s fixed because kj and Juan were guarded. UCF didn’t follow wvu, creighton or mu’s scout but no shock because dukies are never as bright as they think of themselves šŸ˜‚

Does Bill practice guys not guarding kj or staying in the paint in practice or guys playing way off Juan?

Nice false hope W but the next gauge game is at Cincy and at isu to see how much we’ve magically improved (was a good bounce back but don’t get too high from it)

It’s comical as Bill hates giving up easy baskets but we do constantly against pnr and Bill loves man to man and hates junk d’s or zone…….YET

He’s getting schooled by guys literally not guarding his favorites! Haha I’ve been doing this since coaching ball entirely.

Modern defense is two options:
1) Let the 4-5 option on offense shoot and barely guard them unless they set foot in the paint. They hit 2-3 three’s great let them shoot 20-30 times because they will hesitate knowing it isn’t their ā€œroleā€ on the team - what teams do to KJ and Juan

2) let the main guy shoot 40 times and score 50 but stop everyone else or hold them to 10 points (offensively score 70 and win 70-60) - this is the Edey mode let him shoot everytime. He may make 50% but glue to everyone else and you win

The standard ā€œtough man to manā€ is completely dead. Basketball is following football just way behind. Make guys beat you with their weak offensive guys (Bill Belicheck methods)…..if Creighton can school Bill than anyone on This board knows how to defeat this squad this year

Jan 06, 2025 09:44 PM #226

I think the reasonable thing to do is to take the wins with a grain of salt and go into panic mode over the losses.

Jan 06, 2025 10:54 PM #227

@Jhawk69 Love the sarcasm here but typically we have 1 random dumb loss in dec non con before break and 1-2 random losses in big 12 play while typically holding serve at home

We’ve been beat in the second round a lot and had a ton of blowout losses dating back these 2-3 years and the same issues are reoccurring

When you see that same playbook ran at us with no adjustments and more L’s than ever (20-14 in 2024) it causes concern

As a program it is unfortunately trending down and we all know what’s coming in March - second round or sweet 16 loss as we have no real shot to win a title (with teams like isu, Florida, uk, tenn, aub, Bama, Marquette)

We are that 12-20 range especially in the tourney

That’s frustrating for the expectations of this progrum

We supposedly have the best coach in the game, great nil, no ncaa over our head now for a few years and we’re supposed to be ā€œthe teamā€ as Bill road off into the sunset with 1-2 more wins - because everyone wants to play for him now….

This was all after 2022’s win and look at what we’ve rolled out now for 3 straight years…..it has been the opposite of the motto #levelup which was after Bill’s heart issues

Jan 07, 2025 12:35 AM #228

We had a good team in 2023. We won a brutal Big 12, were in the top 5 all year, and were a one seed. Using an early tourney exit to try to say otherwise is an illogical argument. Anyone can get bounced early.

We sucked last year.

We will have to see how we play this year. We have had highs and lows already and it is too early to say. My guess is that we are better than last year but far from being one of Bill's best squads.

Jan 07, 2025 01:10 AM #229

@Jhawk69 The big 12 has shown it is anything but brutal with all the ncaa tourney proof year over year. Besides Texas tech’s run pre covid and Baylor’s covid magic - big 12 is constantly underperforming in the tourney

If we’d beat Ark we’d been trounced by uconn the next round as many fans have admitted

We didn’t have a legit team in 2023 to win it all with Juan and kj playing big minutes….

Jan 07, 2025 01:34 AM #230

@kuballin10 You are right. If you disregard the Big 12s tournament success then they have underperformed, proving that it is a weak conference.

Jan 07, 2025 01:37 AM #231

You are also right about us being plagued by the same issues time and time again. Last year we were plagued by McCullar getting hurt, Arterio getting kicked off the team, and Timberlake being terrible. This year McCullar is still hurt and not playing, Arterio is still kicked off the team, and Timberlake is still terrible.

Jan 07, 2025 04:18 AM #232

Hey some things are still the same but let’s not talk about those because no way the coach has ever screwed up lineups, minutes or rewarding guys with low ceilings or major issues

Let me know who on this roster is an nba player (hint there is 1 and only 1)

Jan 07, 2025 02:48 PM #233

Looking on the bright side we are undefeated in 2025 and have an average victory of 51 points good for number 1 in the world!

Jan 07, 2025 03:37 PM #234

Yeah its hard to be bummed about KU basketball at this particular moment.

Jan 07, 2025 04:29 PM #235

@approxinfinity Do you feel like we honestly have a real chance to make a final 4 and win a title this year?

Jan 07, 2025 05:11 PM #236

@kuballin10 yes i do.

Jan 07, 2025 05:12 PM #237

Yes? Auburn look good but who else are you really scared of that makes you think they can't? KU's biggest opponent is themselves and there is no reason that they can't improve to the point where they are competing for a 1 seed. Not going to say it is a lock to happen, but there is definitely a "real chance".

Jan 07, 2025 05:36 PM #238

@MR11 What have you see this year from this group that makes you feel like the year won’t end like last year or the year before?

Every team in the coaches poll 1-12 is better than us and we’d face them in the sweet 16. I think we are a 3-5 seed so we’d face the 4/5 rd 32 and the 1 by the sweet 16…..

Our ceiling is making the sweet 16

Our most likely out is another second round drubbing or we keep it close but just can’t score enough when it counts (go figure welcome to 2025 college ball)

Nightmare is Sanford like team actually nips us

Jan 07, 2025 06:08 PM #239

Because our best player isn't injured forcing us to start a failed transfer and two freshmen that aren't quite ready. I also think it is reasonable to expect the team to continue to gel and improve through B12 play.

Jan 07, 2025 06:54 PM #240

@dylans Haha are we better - sure - by much - no. We are 3-4 in big 12, 3-5 seed and rd 32/swt 16 team

It’s ā€œniceā€ but that isn’t Kansas standards of having a team that we all know has a legit shot at a title and is a top 5 team

2019 - Auburn blow out

2020 - robbed Doke and Dotson

2021 - USC blowout

2022 - Remy saved Self’s arse but he believes Juan is the greatest pg at KU off all time and KJ impacts games like Ochai moving forward

2023 - Musselman shows he doesn’t workout

2024 - Zags blow out

50% second round blowouts
16% second round tight loss
16% title
16% - I think we make final four not sure we win it all but man that year eats at me

Jan 07, 2025 10:48 PM #245

@approxinfinity I think that’s fair

I also think last year with McCullar healthy we don’t lose the wvu game - he propels us over the top with a defensive play like he did at home against OU….

Don’t have that ability with any of our little 3 or the transfers. Kev is the best nba prospect between last years team and this years (Flory is long-term but not playing at that level like Kev did last year)

Jan 07, 2025 11:09 PM #246

Kind of a leap to get that from what I said, we already dropped a home game and Houston doesn't have to play at ISU, so winning the regular season B12 is not likely no. But I also don't think it would be a massive upset if they did (~10% chance based on betting odds does seem about right).

I didn't even say they will for sure be good enough to compete for a F4, just that is won't take miracle for this team to improve to that level. They have shown they can hit that level of play in spurts, but do need some improvements in execution/consistency.

Honestly the main thing I worry about with this team is facing a team that can exploit Hunter on defense, because that is always going to be there.

ā€œWell that’s a leap where did I ever say we’d win the big 12ā€ - guy who said we got a legit shot and only Auburn scares him than waivers on confidence to win the league

ā€œI didn’t even say they will for sure be good enough to compete for a F4ā€ - says the guy who answered ā€œyes, this is a final 4 team from what I’ve said and can win it all and only auburn is good. Oh but if we play good but uh uh they only play good in spurts oh but uh uh I swear they can put it all together they can do itā€

So which side are you taking because you are hedging every single one šŸ˜‚

This squad has the core 3 who aren’t good enough unless they had Ochai, Braun, Wilson and Remy around them

This roster isn’t good enough….not sure why everyone has homer glasses on when it is blatantly obvious

Jan 08, 2025 02:55 AM #248

@kuballin10 our roster in 2022 wasnt good enough to win a championship for 80% of the season, and yet they did

Let it breathe

Jan 08, 2025 03:13 AM #249

@approxinfinity They went 14-4 won the big 12 regular season and won the big 12 tourney and started peaking at the right time…..this team doesn’t have that

Definitely some bumps in the road but there was a distinct change in March that took place

If you think that same distinct change will happen this year let me know the current injured player who’s going to become our leading scorer in our first 3 ncaa tournament games

NCAA rd of 64- 15 points leading scorer

Rd 32 - 20 leading scoring

Sweet 16 - 23 leading scorer

Championship - 14 2nd leading scorer behind Wilson and Big Dave with 15

Jan 08, 2025 03:23 AM #250

@kuballin10 if everything happened based on a script we wouldnt watch

Jan 08, 2025 04:33 AM #251

@kuballin10 You already know who the player is that's capable of having an Remy like impact if the light ever comes for him like it finally did for Remy, and no he's not injured right now.

I don't why you've chosen to a bigger asshole than normal the last couple of days because I've never seen someone complain about a 51 point road win in conference before, but chill out and stop being an asshole to people who don't view things the same way you do.

Jan 08, 2025 04:54 AM #252

@Texas-Hawk-10 all pac 12 player and much more efficient scorer >>> second team all big 10 and volume shooter (enjoyed your harden comparison that was $)

We have two hardens guys that can put up numbers but constantly lose (aj and more importantly Hunter who’s never won anywhere he’s played and we know why)

Not being an @hole just talking about the team. You came at me in the other thread and you don’t see me calling you an @hole just defended my points

We looked great at ucf but ucf guarded us like the water boy did the scout. Good bounce back win but do you want me to rant and rave over beating ucf on the road? We are Kansas….if that’s what this program has come too yikes

If we go beat houston or isu on the road - that will have my attention and show we might be a squad to compete for a title

Jan 08, 2025 04:54 AM #253

@approxinfinity You watch the nfl right? ;)

Jan 08, 2025 05:18 AM #254

@kuballin10 You are being an asshole to others for the past couple of days because you can't let other people enjoy a 51 point conference road win against a solid team without raining on their optimism because nothing Bill Self does is ever going to be good enough for you.

Dylans and MR11 were being optimistic about KU possibily turning a corner, made positive comments that did not involve or mention you, but yet you chose to respond to them by being negative about KU's future like normal and couldn't let them enjoy the win. That's how you're being asshole.

I'm going to tell you right now that you would be an absolute failure of a college coach because you'd absolutely suck at the political side of the job. If you try to run off every good player because of the next shiny toy coming along, you'd earn yourself a very negative reputation in coaching and recruiting circles of having zero loyalty to any player and would have to rebuild every year because everyone would be fearful of being recruited over every year.

Jan 08, 2025 12:51 PM #255

If we all were to block him, there would be no threads composed mainly of responses to him.

Alternatively, do not feed the trolls.

Jan 08, 2025 01:04 PM #256

Eh. I dont think he is trolling too hard but i appreciate @Texas-Hawk-10 explaining the perspective of why @kuballin10 is grating on him at present. People are different and its not always clear how without context.

I think its good to explore what can be improved even after a 51 point win, but there is a difference between ā€œwhat can be improvedā€ and ā€œwhy Bill Self and this team arent capable of winning the big one, periodā€.

RE 2023: Bill literally had to have a heart attack to not make the second weekend that year. Now, do we beat UConn probably not but who knows.

Jan 08, 2025 02:13 PM #259

@Texas-Hawk-10 Scroll up…..

@approxinfinity tagged me regarding lineups which I commented on Shak starting and what I liked

I explained how poor UCF’s defensive gameplan was along with two more modern options Self would never do because he’s too stubborn

@Jhawk69 responded with sarcasm and zero comments about the actual defensive methods

@approxinfinity said state of KU bball is good and hard to be down after that big a win which had me shocked after KU went 20-14 in 2024 play

I asked ONLY @approxinfinity about being Title contenders and good enough this year

@MR11 piped in on his own with his reasoning and I rebuttaled

He’s a big boy I’m sure but you going out of your way to stick up for just some standard discussions on the team after 51 point win being title contenders or not is cute!

Jan 08, 2025 02:14 PM #260

@BShark Why does he choose the lesser player? Is it all about trust and not about performance? He values one over another clearly even if the trust limits the performance

Jan 08, 2025 02:16 PM #261

@BShark Uconn rolled that tourney there isn’t any way in my you can see how that played out and look back and think we had a chance even if Self was on the sideline

He’s been on the sideline for bigger blowout loses versus worse teams (usc and zags) for me to act like we had a chance against uconn that year

Jan 08, 2025 02:22 PM #262

@kuballin10 if I look back at some of the rosters that overperformed during the ā€œlean yearsā€ i am struck by how the sum was greater than the parts. I think Bill has that mindset always and values specific players higher because he believes the team operates better with them on the floor. What is debatable i think is how much of that is Bill Selfs gut, and how much is quantified or even quantiable from our vantage point, given that we dont have enough data to see how the replacement would perform with as many minutes. Bill has seen much much more of the replacements at practice than we have, but again i think we can speculate on how he assesses them in practice. Would love to see practice sessions.

Jan 08, 2025 02:28 PM #263

@approxinfinity We can all agree on that

Some guys practice how they play and others are gamers - when the lights come on they perform well but in practice it doesn’t mean as much and they don’t

I think of the 2012 Trob/Tyshawn team with Teahan as over performing. That roster though had three guys that made nba rosters (not bmac as he didn’t play)

I’m struggling to see besides Flory who needs way more minutes - who on this squad is nba talent because you 100% need it to win it all

Jan 08, 2025 03:11 PM #264

@approxinfinity I do think it's pretty clear that Flory is better than KJ. KJ has "earned it" by being here 4 years blablabla but Flory just has a better impact on the game at this point.

Jan 08, 2025 03:19 PM #265

@kuballin10 2019 Doke injured, 2023 Self hospitalized, 2024 McCullar injured. The seasons where we are at full strength we tend to do well.

9 rebound KJ doesn’t hurt the team. 2 rebound KJ does. 6 fouls per 40 Flory can’t play the entire game.

Jan 08, 2025 03:24 PM #267

Flory's minutes are on the rise. Over the past 5 games he has logged 7, 8, 14, 17, and 21. I don't think we can complain that he isn't playing enough.

Yeah that was a great match-up. I don't bet but I told my friends to bet the KJ rebounds over.

Not that Bill has to answer to me at all, but I feel like at least 20 minutes from Flory is ideal.

Top 7 rotation guys for me right now (not in any order): Hunt, Flory, Zeke, Juan, KJ, Rylan, Diggy Coit. Storr should be based on talent but mentally he is not there right now. Shak also has the potential to easily pass Diggy. It really is classic Bill to see Shak go from the dog house to starting.

Jan 08, 2025 03:29 PM #269

@kuballin10 If you are taking a post where I said they have a chance to compete at the highest level and taking it to mean that I fully think they are the best team in the country and going to win the B12 already down a game, that is on you man.

I was responding to a post where you implied KU didn't have a real chance to compete for a F4/national title and I 100% disagree with that statement.

Jan 08, 2025 03:37 PM #270

@kuballin10

"@Jhawk69 responded with sarcasm and zero comments about the actual defensive methods"

To clarify, my comment about taking wins with a grain of salt and panicing over losses was not a response to you or directed towards anyone in particular. It was meant to be a lighthearted joke about the tendency of sports fans to panic too easily.

Have a good day and let's hope for a win vd ASU tonight.

Jan 08, 2025 03:54 PM #271

@Jhawk69 That’s a great point….don’t think those teams win it all at full strength but they definitely would have a lightyears better chance based on those names

Hope we throttle asu tonight for the crowd to give them some juice

Jan 08, 2025 03:55 PM #272

@Jhawk69 He needs 20-25 mpg based on his impact! Dudes the only legit nba prospect on the roster and Bill can’t limit the team because he favors another player

Hope the trend continues

Jan 08, 2025 03:57 PM #273

@MR11 Man twisting words about ā€œcompete at the highest levelā€.

I asked a straight forward question - do you think this roster and team is good enough to reach a final 4 and win a title.

I don’t but clearly others do and hope I’m wrong

Sec is a gauntlet but all those teams would score on us so easily and do enough to limit us offensively that I think we’d lose by 15-20 and the game in the sweet 16 not be particularly close

Jan 08, 2025 04:20 PM #274

Btw, regarding ā€œscoring on us easilyā€ this team is much better on the defensive side than offensive according to kenpom. Im curious how that holds up.

Jan 08, 2025 04:21 PM #275

That might be a topic all to itself. 5th in the country in DRtg! How do yall like them apples??

Jan 08, 2025 04:25 PM #276

@kuballin10 Dude I have been nothing but straightforward, how is me summarizing my original post as thinking "compete at the highest level" twisting of words? Is a number 1 seed not qualifying as playing high level college basketball? I'll even post it below so you dont have to scroll back to see it. You don't need to start every message with a snarky comeback, I'm not trying to attack you here just answering your questions.

"Yes? Auburn look good but who else are you really scared of that makes you think they can’t? KU’s biggest opponent is themselves and there is no reason that they can’t improve to the point where they are competing for a 1 seed. Not going to say it is a lock to happen, but there is definitely a ā€œreal chanceā€."

Jan 08, 2025 04:29 PM #277

Appreciate the civility in this thread. Differences of opinion AND differences of conversational styles, and yet we haven’t all cancelled each other and resorted to name calling. Well done. 1000 points to everyone.

Jan 08, 2025 04:31 PM #278

@kuballin10 I agree he deserves to keep playing big minutes. 25 mpg might be ideal.

What I like about this team is we can play any combination of our 3 bigs. We can play KJ with Hunter, Flory with Hunter, or KJ with Flory. We will probably give all three of them substantial minutes and play the hot hand moving forward.

Jan 08, 2025 04:46 PM #279

@MR11 Fair enough - you think they can win it all and I’m not seeing it from this squad

Jan 08, 2025 04:53 PM #280

KU has the easiest remaining schedule in our conference. Predicted to finish 15 up 5 down. Nationally we have the 4th best defense.
Offense is rated 10th best among the KPOM leaders. ASU has two starting guards shooting 48% on 3PT so one of them will have a career high tonight. IF KU makes 10 treys we will score 80 pts and snatch the win. Will this be a let down game where we come out low energy well who knows. Would love to see a solid game with our Cinderella group of Storr, Griffen, Shak and Coit all trying to be the pretty sister.

Jan 11, 2025 12:58 AM #281

Was listening today to a Cincinnati & didn't realize we are 4th in Defensive eff. We are 24th in offensive eff according to Ken Pom they said,KU 12 in defensive rebounding - -104th offensive rebounding --got to improve that
