This year feels a lot like last year. We beat some bad teams, lose a bunch of close games, go into rivalry week with a record of 5-6 and a shot at bowl eligibility, then proceed to get absolutely walloped and humiliated.
Off to a good start, then…
Ya JD just threw a pick 6 if the guy doesn’t fall down. Why do continue to send him out there we can’t win with his decision making. 6th year guy making freshman moves
"Turning the ball over and getting 0 points is better than kicking a field goal and getting 3."
-Jalon Daniels
Hey the defense held them to 3, that was a surprise. I told my son when we turned it on don’t be surprised to see Utah score 60 plus points
Results in ute FG which could’ve been worse. running D looked terrible but held when it mattered I guess

Can’t stare down your receivers, this isn’t middle school
Horrible read by JD keeping that smh
Don’t let him throw it again
At least he has thrown it out of bounds instead of taking the sack.
Should have caught that. Solid drive.
Good grief
This is a team that just loves losing. Moving the ball at will but just finding a way to get 0 points out of it.
Looks like Jalon Daniels slander thread. Guess I won't chat today because I happen to think Jalon is one of the better QB's we've had.
Two red zone trips, zero points. That maybe the game right there already, with our defense we couldn’t afford back to back empty trips
Stupid penalties hurting us from getting points multiple times this season.
Vintage KUFB this week.
Good D! Not out of this one yet!

I call it like I see it, a 6th year guy should know you can’t do that at this level. Most highschool QBs know that. I think JD has had his moments for sure but he has crumbled in big moments for me to say he’s a Jayhawk great. He has a lot of starts to inflate stats. His legacy is putting up numbers vs inferior teams while being a turnover machine in big games.
I think we should all just enjoy JDs last game. If he earns another we can enjoy that one too.
It’s hard for me to enjoy watching people make mistakes that they should know better. That being said if we can keep moving the ball here and get a touchdown we maybe okay. Me personally I’d bench him. I think Bean did way more than JD ever did by a wide margin. He won big games.
Pi
Borderline foul but we’ll take it
Yes!
TD 💙❤️🌾🌾🌾👏👏👏🫶🏈🥰🙏
Hell of a handoff JD
Hope!
Just keep running it fellas and hope we can get some more stops.
I really don't think he's perfect but I think this season you've been projecting his rough season from last year onto this. He hasn't made critical mistakes like last year. I'm not positive he's ever fully recovered from his injury problems of 2-3 years ago. You don't get preseason player of the year recognition in the Big12 without being something special. And so Grimes rushed him back last year thinking he was fully recovered. The JD that people here hate was the first half of last season which I think was coaching malpractice when we had oodles of offensive talent.
21 TD's, 4 ints, now 5 this season. And don't forget, we're not fighting for a bowl game today if we had even a mediocre defense. JD matched a lot of teams score for score this season only to have the misfortune of watching the D cough it up late.
Case in point. KU drive results in TD and boom, just like that we're losing again.
I’m actually ok with them scoring quickly. Keep our D rested for the fourth quarter. As long as the offense keeps grinding, we have a good shot
Our defense has been a much bigger problem than JD6 this year. JD6 is a mixed bag, some great plays and some awful ones, but overall is plenty good enough to run an above-average offense. The defense, on the other hand, has been bad enough as to make bowl eligibility nearly impossible.
Head scratching play calls 2nd and 3rd and long
The playcalls were fine, the execution was poor.
Did espn not show the punt?
Kamara is the bright spot in the defense.
Lance you should've declined that penalty.
heels are across the line.
Luckily this game is on real espn with more than two cameras
They should've asked after everyone standing right there. That's a horsecrap call.
Whatever
Like the call on their Td, illegal man down field. No call!
the refs won't let us have this fumble
The ruling on the field is we need a B12 team in the tournament field. So screw you Kansas
We have stopped them 3 times this drive and the refs have saved them each time
How is that not a loss of down?
Ask coach
Lance deserves from blame. We had a 2nd down play early in their drive that we forced a 4 or so yard loss. So it would have been like 3rd and 6 or 7, but accept the penalty and it so it was 2nd and 7. That made zero sense, gave them an extra play to gain the first which they did on that sideline catch that wasn't. That was a headscratching decision.
Well now they have two shots to get a first down cuz they would have gone on fourth snyway
Wow, holy overthrow
Can we do something before the half?
Not like that.
Recalibrate that arm at halftime, JD
Who was that throw to on 3rd down?
That was the receiver's fault. If he keeps running its a touchdown
I thought u meant to Henderson on 1st down.
Well, not a blowout at the half. Pretty good, pretty, pretty, pretty good. Now, let's go get bowl eligible.
It is imperative to not let up a touchdown on this first possession defensively. We can the throw the ball so we need to be able to run. I’m just worried those two redzone trips empty will end up being the difference. Should be 13-10 right now. What in the world happened o our kicker?
Love Harris the 3rd? 2nd? Jr?
Eman!
Nice throw!

Much better drive by JD there, nice pass and a few nice runs
Omgosh 🏈.
🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾
Kansas makes a play, gotta review it smh
Are you blind?
No 💩
Wow we scored 2 touchdowns last drive but only credited us with one. Then we get a fumble, and refs are like no it can't be.
Don't forget that illegal man down field on their td
Dang Jalon's inaccuracy is pretty bad right now.
@Crimsonorblue22 Did they mention it on TV? I only saw 1 guy wide open past all of us.
Official was Rt there too. They said that too!
There is the Jekyll and Hyde of JD, easy first down on the third down if it is an accurate pass.
@Crimsonorblue22 said in Utah blowout:

Ive got grandkids here i may have missed it
Smh I feel it slipping away again friends, same song different verse. Now 3 possessions in Utah territory with no points. Call me negative but we are giving away another game aren’t we?
Any play that benefits Kansas must be reviewed, he bobbles it idk how you can over turned that.
Not looking to shabby!
Keep up the good play calls.
If you can muster anther TD here, all the pressure goes on them. Pressure turns into turnovers
I love a healthy Hishaw
Fingers crossed. Come on now
Oh good grief
Oh no!
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
That's the JD you all hate and I kind of hate it right now. Throwing it away? Throw it to the tuba section for goodness sakes.
Man. We had them on the ropes too
Yes why throw that in play sorry but if we lose this game 2 red zone INTs is a huge reason as to why. Once again that’s a freshman type of play from a 6th year guy.
This is where we completely fall apart, am I stupid for expecting different two years of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
I know I’ll get flack for it but I’m not sending JD back out there if I’m Leipold. Every single time he has been in this position in his career he follows up with another turnover via pick or fumble
JD, thank you for what you have done for our program. That said, I don't think you are a good QB and I am looking forward to you being replaced, hopefully on this drive.
There goes the refs replay machine.
Poetic justice would be winning this game on the final drive of the game
There defense has to be tired at this point we have held the ball almost for 40 minutes
Run, run, run!
I know I'm gonna jinx us but we haven't committed many penalties today.
Wrong read by JD
Not gonna wanna watch this
OMG!!!!
So painful....
4 trips inside 20 and zip
@Crimsonorblue22 said in Utah blowout:

Why do we torture ourselves every year?
This game just makes me sad.
Bright side is there are 32 seniors on this team and we need to start portaling ASAP
WTF, a 28 point swing the last 2 drives.
Why even throw the GD ball??? Just run it and tie the game. The defense finally shows some resiliency and the offense craps their pants. JD is a great dude but we have to have someone else play QB.
The play calling in the red zone, decision-making and execution are all inexplicably bad...
@stoptheflop the hope we will be better is why.
I take back what I said about JD6 being one of the better QBs in our program's history. He is one of the worst. He is Cozart, Crist, Bender level bad, and probably worse. Any illusion of him ever being good was caused by Grimm, Arnold, and Neal carrying him. He should not be starting at QB at any level of football. If he has any decency in him he will give back any and all NIL he has ever earned to the school.

I know y'all get mad at my negativity but once again I am correct. First pass play pick 6 smh, like clock work
It feels like everything that could possibly go wrong has succeeded too many times this year
@kjayhawks i actually think youve been pretty patient this season given the carnage and flaming wreckage we have navigated.
Nice catch.

Almost 500 yards of offense. The issue isn't moving the ball.

He is good enough to win you games, which none of the others were. He is a notch above. But he’s no Reesing.
He could have left and gotten a BAG and stayed (still probably for a bag). But he’s a real Jayhawk in an era that doesn’t really exist anymore. So I respect him a lot.
Simply can't get a 4th quarter stop - all season long...
Now this year I wouldn’t put most of the losses on the offense. But those games we had a chance late and threw picks or fumbled inside the 5 the possession before.

Stanley threw 11 ints his senior year. He was not good.
Welp, maybe next year.
Well it’s been another year of what if for Kansas football friends. Gosh I’m almost speechless, I had hope there for a bit. As Red says in Shawshank “hope
in here is a dangerous thing”
Wow. i'm finally caught up to the game. Absolutely jaw dropping. Shocking. Unprecedented to throw two interceptions like that in or near the end zone in scoring position? How is that possible????
This kind of play makes you wanna just quit being a fan of the program. They just make it so hard for us. Laughable to play like that.
And i haven't read the thread yet. Did anybody criticize our half ass coach for ACCEPTING those Utah penalties in the 2nd quarter? Just idiotic. Can't one of his assistants punch him in the shoulder and say WTF are you doing???
Sigh. We just have to grow up and into a real football team at some point. Will it happen?
@rockchalkjayhawk I think we fans should be entitled to compensation lol

Sadly he wasn't throwing it away in my eyes. Receiver deked inside and he didn't even see it.
Then you get to 4th and ten and just sit on it. JD isn’t a n average D1 QB sorry but that’s a fact at this point. Yes playing for longer than any QB in Kansas history he was able to get to number 2 on most records.

to sh*t the bed like that on senior night ... probably how we'll remember Daniels' career.
The question for next year is do we have anybody better to take over?
@rockchalkjayhawk that’s the problem like I said the two deep was loaded with seniors this season. A 3 win season is probably inevitable for next season and I would be okay with that if we had made bowls the last few seasons like we should have.
@rockchalkjayhawk Whoever takes over will be better. JD is so bad that it is impossible to be worse.
10/27 187 yards 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions for a 6th year senior. That maybe the worst line I have ever seen out of a guy with his experience. One of the worst QB performances in KU history IMO and I watched thru the 90s and early 00s

That was bad enough if it leaked JD had money on Utah, I wouldn’t question it.

ALL I WANTED WAS A BOWL GAME!!!!! :(
nope no blow out this year , we wwhere blowing them of the ball. Feel really bad for HiShaw he play his ass off- -same with williams- -huge gashes in their Defense
@SlimShaddy54 a guy has to wonder if Cole or Zeke start and play that game does Kansas win going away?
I'm going to limit my anger. You're welcome.
I'll just say this - we rushed the ball at will all day. So whose bright idea is it to say "we've rushed 85 yards successfully on this drive, now let's get right near the goal line and let Daniels throw an interception. Because that's his specialty.
Thank goodness this season is over. And hell yeah, I wouldn't shed a tear if LL was fired.
I am optimistic that we can bounce back next season. I do think there are good enough QBs on the roster already.
They need to beef up both sides of the line and absolutely drop a bag for an edge presence.
I would prefer we get to an identity that is focused on good defense and ball control offense. I think it’s the best way for a program like KU to beat superior teams.
I do still think LL and co. can build a B12 contender
That was a cold, disappointing experience. Hard to know where the program goes from here.
Here's how you win that game with a modest shift in execution:
1st quarter [11:20]: 3rd and 9 at the UTAH 25 -- Instead of throwing an interception, you take an incompletion and kick a field goal. (3 points)
1st quarter [2:16]: 4th and 10 at the UTAH 13 -- Instead of false start and forcing a re-kick (which you miss), you kick a field goal. (3 points)
4th quarter [13:39]: 2nd and goal at the UTAH 12 -- Instead of throwing an interception in the end zone, throw it out of bounds and eventually kick a field goal. (3 points)
4th quarter [7:52]: 3rd and goal at the UTAH 5 -- instead of throwing an interception returned for a touchdown, you RUN the ball, get stuffed again, and kick a field goal. (3 points)
With this shift, KU scores 32 points. Enough to win the game even without taking away the 7 points Utah scores on the interception for a 99yd TD.
I wanted better for the Seniors. I stayed to the (bitterly cold) end, but it was hard.
Still miles better than 5 years ago, but the last 2 seasons could’ve gone so differently.
See you all on the basketball side.

That’s the problem for me, we have dumped hundreds of millions into this program. New stadium, new locker rooms and new indoor practice facility. All to win 5 games a season. I’m sorry that’s unacceptable and a losers mentality IMO. It’s something KSUCK would celebrate and hang a banner over. I don’t think Leipold should be fired yet but DK better have a U-Haul in his driveway before the end of year.
@bskeet said in Utah blowout:

Apologies that you were there to see that live.
The most frustrating play was the 3rd and goal at the UTAH 5 with 7:52 left in 4th quarter (score UTAH 17 - KAN 14) – You can run one more time and, if unsuccessful, tie the game on a field goal...and lean on the D which was doing great all day. That's conservative and it's pretty common for people to criticize those kinds of calls... but Utah actually brought on personnel that suggested they anticipated a passing play. So, getting aggressive there was a little too predictable, at least for Utah.
That play flipped the game.
Fans streamed out after that. It was crushing.
It felt like that was a 14 point play, even though we were only down 10 points with just under 8 minutes left to play.
Oh JD I tried to defend you and you let me down!
After some time to calmy reflect I think JD had some great but injury ridden seasons for us but was very bad these past couple years, possibly due to his past with injuries. I will try to remember him fondly but many games, including this one, marr my perception of him.
Some seasons its tough to get everything firing at the same time. There were games this season where JD was good and the defense sucked. And games where we did completely insane shit, like special teams giving up 6 points on a fumbled punt, and there were games where the playcalling sucked. So, it's tough to pin everything on JD. He ended his playing days at Lawrence on a down note, and that's unfortunate. But, if we had a little more stability in other areas of the game, maybe there would have been less pressure on JD. Who knows.
After cooling off here’s the deal with JD this season, he played good enough for us to win 7 games and make a bowl. I am 100% certain of that, the problem is he will be a guy that I remember as Tony Romo of college football. He buckled under pressure pretty much everytime unfortunately. He was terrible last season and this season at times I thought he was much better and passed that type of play. Today and against KSU he reverted back to his old self. It sucks twice as bad because a mediocre game today we easily win. It’s hard to swallow with his experience as well, we easily beat Cincinnati if the defense shows up at all. But that was the whole defense that had trouble. Not very often in football can you circle one player and say if he just does his job, we win. Today was that for Jalon Daniels. He was finally healthy to start last season and given the keys to this program. It’s disappointing but he did not move the needle forward at all IMO. Most of his big games were pre injury against inferior opponents at home. I wrote up the Jason Bean redemption post after we wrapped up the 2023 season. I hoped to do the same today for Jalon, but it didn’t work out. Very sad day for all parties involved. This maybe the most disappointing season in KU football history, right up there with last season and 2009.
JD is not the sole reason this team underperformed. I still am thankful for JDs contribution to the program. It sucks he went out like this.
@kjayhawks Should add the Mizzou game to another of JD's "good enough" games. Henderson dropped a pass on 3rd down at about midfield which would have been a first down. Down 4 with about 2:40 left, maybe. LL elected to punt. MU scored again. Lost by 11, but KU had a legit shot to win that game on that last drive. JD had a pick, but wasn't horrible otherwise. (this is by memory, so may be off).
I hate to say it, but I think 4 years is long enough for a college athlete. Dajaun Harris sort of outstayed his welcome also, IMO. Too much history where fans remember every mistake.
@DanR Yes, I don’t put the Mizzou game on him in the slightest. It goes back to the old verbiage of “you die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” . Good assessment of him and Juan, I think the coaches said these are our guys at this spot and we are riding their coat tails no matter what.
It took me a while to get here, I’ve warmed up to the Dajuan and JD comparisons. As QB you have a disproportionate impact on the outcome of a game compared to other positions. The position invites glory and scrutiny. Like the PG, the QB is the most direct link to the coach on the field, at least on offense; a PG at least as an opportunity to impact both ends of the court.
I agree with @DanR that 4 years is enough. In both cases there seemed to be a mental fatigue that set in by the end. Both DJ and JD are talented players, but I’m not sure either was fully mentally present their final year, and of course, both had pieces around them that variably, often inexplicably, melted down.
Coaching had a lot to do with the loss. I know the kicker missed early, but if we play to our strength and run the ball, 3 red zone TO's turn into 9 points and take 7 off their score and we win this game. After the first pic in the end zone maybe learn from that so it doesn't happen again.
