"Baylor just 20 minutes away from their first victory in Allen Fieldhouse..."
Feb 14, 2015 08:29 PM #1

Who can we protest to about announcers?

Gottlieb was his typical horrible... and what's his name (the other guy) was just as bad.

This is a thread to post up all the bad statements those guys had today.

My "favorites" include:

"Baylor just 20 minutes away from their first victory in Allen Fieldhouse..."

"They are going to need a second banner to put up all their championships." (as the camera showed 2 banners already hanging)

"That looked like a charge.... players can slide over and still get the charge." (Gottlieb's call when Mason was clearly fouled on his drive with around 5 minutes left in the game)

"Drew has to leave here satsified." (at the end of the game when Kansas pulled away with the win)

It was hard to follow any of the logic of these two clowns.

Feb 14, 2015 08:35 PM #2

I thought Dougie was not as bad as usual. The "20 mins. away" comment was ridiculous, though. Why didn' he just say before the game started...."40 mins. away from their first victory"?
I have to disagree with you on the Mason call...I thought that could have gone either way.

Feb 14, 2015 08:37 PM #3

@drgnslayr and calling us for the best flop he's seen in a long time! Can not stand him! Orange guy

Feb 14, 2015 08:43 PM #4

Doogie God Love--the STD of sports broadcasting.

Feb 14, 2015 08:45 PM #5

Drew CANNOT possibly be satisfied with this game. He was completely out-coached the second part of the first half and the second half. Dougie really lives in a "backwards" world.

Feb 14, 2015 08:51 PM #6

@drgnslayr Doogie Snotlieb, the OSU buttboy. Your jealousy is so transparent, Doogie. They invented a word for guys like him...dickweasel...

Feb 14, 2015 08:52 PM #7

@KUSTEVE

Hey.... OSU is just a mule's butt hair away from winning a B12 title! :-)

Feb 14, 2015 08:54 PM #8

@drgnslayr Snotlieb is such a tool. He spent the entire game criticizing us. He wants to be Jim Rome when he grows up.

Feb 14, 2015 08:55 PM #9

@KUSTEVE

PHOF x 2

Feb 14, 2015 08:56 PM #10

@KUSTEVE

I'm so upset because at halftime, after I heard we were 20 minutes away from losing to Baylor, I burned all my KU memorabilia. Dang. Now I've got to go shopping this afternoon and start over.

Feb 14, 2015 08:57 PM #11

@drgnslayr

I hear adidas has a two for one sale on some of those uniforms from two years ago.

Feb 14, 2015 08:58 PM #12

@drgnslayr LOL.....anytime Doogie is on, I instinctively grab my wallet, because you never know when Snotlieb will get the urge to steal again ( like he did in college).

Feb 14, 2015 09:00 PM #13

Loving these!! I was bout to have the big one, doogie and our game!!!

Feb 14, 2015 09:04 PM #14

He also talked about "fools gold" new buzz words here.

Feb 14, 2015 09:04 PM #15

@KUSTEVE

Yeap, expelled from Notre Dame...

Feb 14, 2015 09:04 PM #16

@KUSTEVE good one!!

Feb 14, 2015 09:05 PM #17

@drgnslayr I know! I thought that was kinda strange when he said those things.
Thats what you get when you can't put your shorts on right though.

Did anyone else find it interesting that Lucas was in the game late during crunch time? Then with the game in hand, they went small with Perry at the 5, Greene and Oubre 3 and 4. Interesting.

What did everyone think about how we played?
I thought they played a good game. Didnt shoot the trey as good as they could have but they made up for it by hitting the glass pretty good. Lucas seemed to be a pretty good match up inside against Gathers. That boy is big.

Feb 14, 2015 09:06 PM #18

@Crimsonorblue22 Pardon my French, maam...but in my neck of the woods, people "take a doogie"...

Feb 14, 2015 09:06 PM #19

@KUSTEVE HA!

Feb 14, 2015 09:08 PM #20

A lot of people, once the hit the big time become too full of themselves and forget the past. Gotlieb and Ken Pomeroy are good examples. Dougie used to be be a a fairly decent commentator with decent conference knowledge, but the better known he became the bigger a-hole and homer he turned out to be. The pants backwards episode at AFH will always follow him and he will always resent KU undeservedly for that.

Feb 14, 2015 09:10 PM #21

@Lulufulu I'm glad coach trusted Lucas and stayed w/him! They-Baylor died by the 3! Free throws were huge, glad we started driving!! And boards the most important! Haven't looked at stats yet so jmo!

Feb 14, 2015 09:10 PM #22

@JayHawkFanToo Oh man...I meant to say this to you...I'm glad you mentioned Kenwrong- have you noticed his "magical" rankings shift for our defense? "Magically", we have been moved from 32nd to 18th in about a week. The Bookcooker is at it again.

Feb 14, 2015 09:13 PM #29

Feb 14, 2015 09:13 PM #30

@KUSTEVE having some fun! So happy we won!

Me, too.. It was close and for a while I forgot we were playing against Drew....

Feb 14, 2015 09:15 PM #33

@Crimsonorblue22 We were 1,200 lbs of screaming steel, and sex appeal...we never looked rattled the whole game - we KNEW we were going to win. And we all knew they would win, too.

Feb 14, 2015 09:16 PM #34

@brooksmd I have a hard time ever rooting for ISU or osu!!!

Feb 14, 2015 09:17 PM #35

@KUSTEVE

Pomeroy had OU and Baylor ranked ahead of KU...

Have you noticed that writers that used to cite his rankings no longer do it? They just cite some his number but avoid his rankings like the plague.

Feb 14, 2015 09:17 PM #36

@Crimsonorblue22 You have to be strong....we need you to root for the Mildcats tonight against the Sooners.

Feb 14, 2015 09:18 PM #37

@KUSTEVE got it!!!

Feb 14, 2015 09:18 PM #38

Feb 14, 2015 09:19 PM #39

@JayHawkFanToo Thats true for most, except dreamy eyed Topeka Journal sportswriters who are simply ecstatic Kenwrong will talk to them....

Feb 14, 2015 09:20 PM #40

@Crimsonorblue22 OUBRE.......my man!!!! Loved Wayne as well... Landen was absolutely a force...

Feb 14, 2015 09:22 PM #41

@KUSTEVE

I have called on Jesse a few times to justify Pomeroy's rankings and he did not reply. Cannot really justify it when KenPom is at odds with just about every other human and computer generated ranking out there.

Feb 14, 2015 09:22 PM #42

@KUSTEVE does anybody think oubre plays effortlessly? Is he so smooth or could he turn it up? Lucas big kudos! Selden finally drives! That's what selfs was talking about!! Getting to the line too!

Feb 14, 2015 09:23 PM #43

@drgnslayr forgot!! He made fun of Embiids weight!!!!

Feb 14, 2015 09:24 PM #44

@Crimsonorblue22 It's like the old Carpenters song...with Oubre it is " We've Only Just Begun". He is just beginning to assert himself. Wait until tournament time- he will be an assassin.

Feb 14, 2015 09:26 PM #45

Just got goose bumps about Danny's team!

Feb 14, 2015 09:26 PM #46

@Crimsonorblue22

Perry had a strong game as well. If you take out Oubres numbers, the rest of the team shot 2-12 from 3 point. Coach Self looks like genius now wanting to improve the inside game for those times -like today- when the 3 is not falling. I wonder how the Coach Self's critics will spin this game.

Feb 14, 2015 09:27 PM #47

@Crimsonorblue22 Hope his boys can pull it off.

Feb 14, 2015 09:28 PM #48

@JayHawkFanToo Good luck with that. I'm wondering if Kenwrong gave Jesse a kenwrong decoder ring to make sense of his rankings. I visualize Jesse as Ralphie in the movie " A Christmas Story", sitting on the throne, trying to break the "code".

Feb 14, 2015 09:28 PM #49

@JayHawkFanToo yeah!!! I wonder, they will find something! Did u watch the show on self? I have it saved, it looked good!

@Crimsonorblue22 He might know quite a bit but he doesn't know nearly as much as he thinks he does. There is a reason why is radio show are way down in numbers. Everyone else is sick of him too!

Feb 14, 2015 09:37 PM #62

@Crimsonorblue22

Most of us do. I don't get why some posters have the need to criticize and second guess everything he does, even with all the success he has had...do they really thing they know more than Coach Self? Wouldn't that be the epitome of arrogance...and... insecurity?

Feb 14, 2015 09:38 PM #63

Looking at the box score...our only production was from Perry, Wayne, KO, with Lucas chipping in 9. Hardly anyone else scored much...we're usually a little more balanced. But...whatever it takes. I also noted that Baylor had a guy with 38 mins. and 3 with 34. We only had 1 guy with 34. That had to have helped us down the stretch. Lucas was great. He was what we needed inside. Got some boards, got to the line. He was key.

Feb 14, 2015 09:39 PM #64

Even a better day to see Fran just do that!👏👏

Feb 14, 2015 09:40 PM #65

@JayHawkFanToo Baylor had 3 guys w/lots of boards!

Feb 14, 2015 10:12 PM #81

They are a good rebounding team, so I guess we did well to hang with them.

Feb 14, 2015 10:13 PM #82

@jaybate-1.0 it's under

You all were right, Cliff is a starter.

Feb 14, 2015 10:18 PM #83

@Crimsonorblue22

Baylor only played 8 players, one played just a few seconds when Medford fouled out.. 6 players used up 188 of the 200 minutes or 94% or available playing time.; that is one short bench...

Feb 14, 2015 10:28 PM #84

In answer to the questions about whom to root for.....My philosophy is to root for ISU since they are the home team....if they win on the road that gives them an edge.....but they may not lose any more games and we still get WVU at home.
Either way, I'm hoping for an exhausting triple over time game.
I'm not too proud to take any advantage we can get for Monday's game.

Feb 14, 2015 10:30 PM #85

I see "journeyman NBA player" written all over Rico.

Feb 14, 2015 10:33 PM #86

I liked the game Landen Lucas put up.

When all else fails, go with the guy who has post fundamentals.

Feb 14, 2015 10:36 PM #87

@Hawk8086 you are so wise! I go w/heart! Really dislike ISU!!

Feb 14, 2015 10:36 PM #88

@drgnslayr Yep. But it beats "journeyman D League player" or "journeyman European player"
Like they used to say about Fred Patek of the Royas being the shortest player in the majors....better than the shortest player in the minors.

Feb 14, 2015 10:36 PM #89

@Crimsonorblue22 Looks like that triple OT will not happen.

Feb 14, 2015 10:41 PM #90

@drgnslayr like our man, Tarik Black!

Feb 14, 2015 10:42 PM #91

@Hawk8086 maybe ISU will shoot and miss their way back out of it!!

Feb 14, 2015 10:58 PM #92

@Lulufulu said:

Lucas seemed to be a pretty good match up inside

I've definitely changed my mind about Lucas. Used to cringe when he got the ball and now I'm happy to see him come in. Moving that big body better under the basket, 5 for 5 at the line and even a semi-flop to draw the third foul on Rico which he chuckled about.

Lot's of guys stepping up Oubre looked smooth, Ellis played strong all game, and Selden started to penetrate more finally. I thought Frank looked kind of beat up again, some bad shot selections, missed FTs and not finding guys open, but offset by some bulldog hustle as usual.

Self getting lots of exposure and love today was nice too.

All in all, nice game with a scrappy, but reliable Faylor.

Feb 14, 2015 11:01 PM #93

@Jyhwk_InTigrtwn

Selden made a critical 3 to bring KU within 6 and Oubre followed with another 3 to make it a 3 point game; IMHO, that was the turning point of the game.

Feb 14, 2015 11:07 PM #94

@JayHawkFanToo

He has a sweet three that's been falling with regularity lately and really helping us in tight spots like the one you mention. AND he got to the hoop a few times and drew some contact a few other times which hasn't been quite as regular as that long stroke has been. Great game from him and hope he keeps it up!

Feb 14, 2015 11:13 PM #95

@Jyhwk_InTigrtwn

Lately, Selden has been hitting 3s at the most opportune times; hopefully he continues that streak...

Feb 14, 2015 11:14 PM #96

@Jyhwk_InTigrtwn Frank did have 8 assists! He just had an off shooting day. He made 2 throws at the end, I think. Graham has not been shooting very well either. What's nice about this team, we usually have somebody hot. Takes awhile to find it sometimes, like Lucas today.

Feb 15, 2015 12:19 AM #97

I don't know @drgnslayr, I really respect your basketball opinions and your great contributions to this site, but at least i get a little irked by our fans complaining about announcers.

I said on the JNews blog during the game the only time it's really bothered me was Billy Packer cheering for Memphis during the 08 game.

I don't listen that much to be honest. I thought he gave us a lot of respect today. Sure he disagreed with calls, but good grief, we all disagrees with calls! I know there's not a mic in front of us when we do it, but announcers tell it like they see it.

Just my two cents worth for what it's worth!

Great win by the way. I saw KU's baseball team in person today get whooped pretty good by LSU, but it was fun nonetheless.

Feb 15, 2015 12:30 AM #98

@wissoxfan83 You see the Tulane win over Cincinnati today? Three pt shot barely cleared shooters hand when the horn sounded. Could be SC Play of the Day if they don't find something from Kenstinky blowout of SC.

Feb 15, 2015 12:39 AM #99

@wissoxfan83

I only complained about that one call late in the game.

Actually, Duggy pointed out the one call where it was clearly out on Baylor under the goal, but the refs missed it.

These guys were getting on my nerves for just saying stupid things, not really about being anti-KU. Like the need for a second banner when the image on the screen showed two banners. Even my wife spouted out on that one, and she usually sits there in silence while tolerating my verbal tirades.

Feb 15, 2015 12:39 AM #100

@Hawk8086 Agreed with you. Wanted to add the Douggie shorts episode.

Feb 15, 2015 12:42 AM #101

@drgnslayr lol, oh man, thats just wrong.

Feb 15, 2015 12:43 AM #102

@drgnslayr he drove me nuts, about calls and mostly comments, Embiids weight and worse flop......... Each to his own!

Feb 15, 2015 12:45 AM #103

@Crimsonorblue22 I think Frank got his bell rung a little bit mid way thru the first half. I saw him come away from the base line after a foul with him holding his head for more than a few seconds.

Feb 15, 2015 12:47 AM #104

@Lulufulu oh yeah! Never did see what happened did you?

Feb 15, 2015 01:32 AM #105

@Crimsonorblue22

Thank you kindly.

Feb 15, 2015 01:34 AM #106

@jaybate-1.0 find it?

Feb 15, 2015 02:17 AM #107

@brooksmd

No I missed it, I did hear about it. I was at the KU baseball game. It wasn't going well, left when it was 8-1, missed a nice comeback but we still lost 8-5. KU's starter was pretty good today until the 4th, and then when I complained about the coach leaving him in too long, the reliever totally blows the game, he was a freshman, tough place to make a college debut and it was over.

I attended last night, and we played them pretty tough. A 3 run bomb was the big difference in the game.

@drgnslayr, I missed the banners comments. I guess my point is when I live blog with the gang on JNew's, people complain about the announcers, even before it begins. And I just get tired of it. Not nearly enough to sacrifice my membership in this fine KUBuckets organization however!

Feb 15, 2015 03:55 AM #108

@Crimsonorblue22 Nah, never saw what happened to Frank.

Feb 15, 2015 04:50 AM #109

@drgnslayr
I thought the worst was at the end of the game when Gottlieb corrected his announcer after he said this win probably helped KU towards their eleventh big 12 title. He began to list all these qualifiers such as the amount of games KU would need to lose and the amount of games other teams would have to win. He concluded this by saying it was still possible for another team to share the title with KU. Of course this is true but it seems sillier each win we have for these announcers to continue to come up with these fantastical scenarios where according to Doug another team could unimpressively be an asterisk next to our eleventh straight big 12 title.

Feb 15, 2015 12:37 PM #110

It's a much bigger deal whe Kansas loses. Not such a big deal when Kansas wins. That is the monster that Kansas Basketball has become. I'm Good with that.

Feb 15, 2015 12:49 PM #111

Yesterday, I thought I was possibly just irritable because the announcers were getting under my skin with about every comment. It was so bad, I thought about starting a KUbuckets topic on it. Then I thought: what a silly thing to start a topic on when it was probably just me that the announcers were annoying the hell out of.

Feb 15, 2015 01:12 PM #112

@wissoxfan83 There are worse things than being irked. I get "irked" when an OSU homer runs us down all game, as he has done every game he's called for KU for years. Of course, unlike you, I actually watched the game.

Feb 15, 2015 01:30 PM #113

My wife and I just turned down the volume after the stupidity irked us enough. Think it was right after the "worst flop ever". My response was "dougie, your precious Smart is the most prolific flopper of all time. Might end up in the Hall for it. Or get an Emmy."

Feb 15, 2015 02:27 PM #114

@KUSTEVE I guess if you're looking for an OSU homer, you'll find an OSU homer. Not sure where you get your info, but, I did actually watch the game,

And once again, you, and @Blown directly above your post prove my point. You're getting irked, annoyed, irate, etc over what an announcer says. Who cares what they say? There's plenty to get irked about during a game, like passes to the stands, 3 pointers with no rebounders, etc. Why let what some announcer says irk you?

Feb 15, 2015 02:35 PM #115

@wissoxfan83 part of the game watching experience for me is listening to commentators. I appreciate gaining perspective from their remarks. I'm thankful that I have you to tell me what should and shouldn't bother me based on the expectations of an experience that I have.

Feb 15, 2015 02:43 PM #116

Maybe my opinion is that I can't understand why mistakes made by 18 and 19 year old amateurs (throwing balls into stands) would irk you so much.

Feb 15, 2015 02:59 PM #117

Well I sure don't want to get into a pissing match here so go ahead, let the announcers irk you and I'll let the players irk me!

Feb 15, 2015 03:19 PM #118

@wissoxfan83 now that is what I call win-win negotiating :)

Feb 15, 2015 03:42 PM #119

@Blown I've been on Ku boards for years, and have never found anyone that ever defended Snotlieb until this one. Wearing the OSU colors, and making reference to it was the first clue.

Feb 15, 2015 04:36 PM #120

Heck, for me, a portion of entertainment for gamecasts is looking at mannerisms and listening to the inane commentaries of such courtside comics as Doogie Gee and Dickie Vee. That tie of Doogie's was a bit over the top. At least he did not tie it backside forward!

Feb 15, 2015 07:07 PM #121

@REHawk LOL....When I think of Snotlieb, I think of the little ditty " pants on the ground"...

Mar 03, 2015 02:22 AM #122

I know this is a dead topic, and I know I threw a divergent opinion on this topic, but now Gottlieb has crossed the line for me, so erase I ever said here. I hate the guy!!

"Doug Gottlieb believes Kentucky junior forward Willie Cauley-Stein should be named National Player of the Year"

Yeah right..... Willie is averaging a whole 9.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg.

What a friggin' joke! If you are going to run a platoon.. then you should be sacrificing the personal accolades for players. 9.1 ppg and 6.4 rpg doesn't put you near the category of NPOY. Not even in the conversation. You can't be a part-time worker and get full-time benefits.

Kaminsky averages 18.1 ppg, 8.3 rpg. And he definitely plays a more integral role for his team. Frank gets hit with double and triple teams to earn his points. Willie is just another option on a team of McDs AAs.
