SAN DIEGO AZTECS - TUESDAY NIGHT 10P.M. CBS
Dec 20, 2015 04:15 PM #1

Strange time slot for a CBS game, probably because of the holidays.

Talk about an up and down season! Barely losing to Utah, losing to Little Rock, beating ranked 14th ranked Cal.?

Dec 20, 2015 05:07 PM #20

For sure...a couple of those loses look bad. Look what WVU did to them. On paper, we shouldn't have a problem with them. But.....we know that emotionally, at least, we will get their best shot.

Dec 20, 2015 05:10 PM #21

I don't upvote every post, but these opponent threads with campus shots, etc. are killers! They alone are worth the price of admission to this site!

Looks like they're relying on a Freshman guard for team-high minutes and scoring.

@nuleafjhawk ha ha! Good one!

The game is on cbs sports network, a channel I don't check very often. On cox hd it's 2260 or 260 non hd.

Some people get to live in San Diego, and then there's the rest of us, although @VailHawk's got it pretty good too.

@wrwlumpy Lumpy, I join you in high praise of Salk and his discovery. Spent a month in basement polio ward of old KC General Hsptl summer 1949. Eight years old, and my parents could visit infrequently only from outside hospital's screened basement window. Probably the basis for my cherishing lifetime moments of intermittent solitary pursuits: running, pedaling, reading, fishing, working in remote Ozark woods. I was mighty fortunate to have survived lasting effects of that malady before Salk rescued probably millions of people from crippling misfortune.

I went to Mecical Corp Scool at Balboa Naval Hospital. It was a short walk from there to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. Joan Embry who was on the Tonight show many, many times made it a destination for me to meet pretty girls while a Polar Bear would salute anyone in a Navy uniform. The Coronado bridge had not yet been fully built and the first person to cross it was a pregnant lady in a police car who had the baby on the bridge. Many evenings were spent walking around Plaza downtown where preachers would stand on soap boxes while women in bikini's sold Bibles next to tattoo parlors. Being eighteen and headed for Vietnam was made all the more difficult by pondering leaving one of the most beautiful cities in the country.

@wrwlumpy This will be a big boy game for us. SD is a perennial NCAA team, for the most part, and it will be a true away game for us. We can beat them. Our boys just have to lock down and be tough like they were in the WUGs. They can win this game. I think it will be close but they can win it. It should be a good test.

Dec 21, 2015 12:19 AM #42

@wrwlumpy " Where all da white women at?"

Dec 21, 2015 01:36 AM #43

I hope for a Kansas win on the 22nd. But I don't like the time of the game and it's location. Oh don't get me wrong SD is beautiful. But a game 3 days before Christmas at 10 pm our time.
SD will be playing or should I say trying to be the Scrooge to my Holiday. We better win the game.

Dec 21, 2015 01:55 AM #44

@Duanep5ku kids will adjust to time, Dg will not sleep in for this one!! Probably be harder for some fans than kids. I think they will be ready, no repeat of last year. Isn't this the tallest team?

Dec 21, 2015 02:00 AM #45

@wrwlumpy Thank you for your service, sir! My wife served in the USAF during '91. I decided to pass on an opportunity at the Academy in Colo Springs, choosing KU professional school. We have been to Hotel Del in Coronado twice since '00 and have loved it, SDiego, and LaJolla in particular.

Dec 21, 2015 02:05 AM #46

I notice a "name" that KU faithful were tossing around quite a bit during his recruiting: Angelo Chol. I see from his stats as a SENIOR, that he has amounted to very little. 4ppg, 4rpg, 50-60%FT. And this was some ranked kid? Methinks no-namer Kevin Young would kick his azz...and we'll see Ellis and Traylor (both 6'8.) work this guy. Ellis and Traylor had the guts to play for Bill Self. I respect that. Even over homesickness...(waaah!!)

Dec 21, 2015 03:19 AM #47

@ralster

I love the Del Coronado...it is claimed that there are ghost there...

Dec 21, 2015 03:21 AM #48

I would not count the win against California as a big win, they were grossly over-ranked at the start of the season based on potential and they have not come close to living up to it.

Dec 21, 2015 01:51 PM #49

@JayHawkFanToo

That's what 5-star freshman do to people's heads. They take a mediocre team a year ago and surprisingly make them 100 times better overnight. Cal is better this year but they way they were ranked early was just for TV.

@ralster

Chol has done nothing since bouncing from Arizona to SDSU.. It's a case where we are fortunate to have missed on him. He didn't develop as some scouts had predicted he could.

@Crimsonorblue22

the next game against UC Irvine is what your thinking of. SDSU just has a bunch of 6-7 to 6'9 types

Dec 21, 2015 04:53 PM #50

@KansasComet Oh my, Raquel. And today in her mid 70's she's still got it.

With my head back on straight, thanks to a Navy dad lived in SD twice. Once in Ocean Beach (blah) and once in Pacific Beach (YOWZA). In PB we were 2 blocks from the water and about 1/2 mile south of La Jolla. Beautiful girls, beautiful weather, beautiful girls, beautiful beach, beautiful girls.....

Dec 21, 2015 05:08 PM #51

Dec 21, 2015 10:42 PM #55

@nuleafjhawk Well said!

Dec 22, 2015 12:02 AM #56

@ralster

Chol is a reason that lower ranked guys are a bit scary. He was ranked in the 50s or 60s and just never did develop and pan out. He was thought of as a fast rising candidate, but looking back at his game, he wasn't super skilled or explosive as an athlete.

There's even a funny moment I saw in one of his HS highlight videos. Towards the end of his highlights Chol makes a move from the corner to the middle of the lane. He dunks, but its clear that the play was whistled dead, and you can see the official on the baseline signal that he traveled. If ever there was a bit of foreboding in a highlight, that is it.

Dec 22, 2015 02:38 PM #60

@wrwlumpy - Just wanted to say that your pregame threads are excellent. Always an education. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

And SDSU losing to Grand Canyon. Wow. Grand Canyon got beat by Louisville by 45 points.

Dec 22, 2015 03:26 PM #61

Merry Christmas everyone!

Dec 22, 2015 04:21 PM #62

@Gunman same to you and your family!

Dec 22, 2015 05:03 PM #63

@HighEliteMajor

Don't let the score of the Louisville game fool you, Grand Canyon is a pretty decent team. Keep in mind that the Louisville game was at Louisville right after they let the game against Michigan State slip away and were looking for blood...remember that after losing to MSU, KU beat Chaminade by 51 points. GC is 10-2 and the only other loss was to Nebraska-Omaha in OT and their record includes a win over Houston and just about all their wins have been by double digits. Not a great team but definitely not as bad as the Louisville score would appear to indicate.

Dec 22, 2015 05:07 PM #64

@JayHawkFanToo Dan majerle coach GC? I use to "like" him!

Dec 22, 2015 05:13 PM #65

Dec 22, 2015 08:24 PM #69

@Crimsonorblue22

Ha... I liked him a lot as a player on that old Suns team. He hasn't quite made my "man love" list yet.

Dec 22, 2015 08:26 PM #70

@drgnslayr I haven't seen a pic of him for awhile, he might have gotten old, but you know, I haven't!😉

Dec 22, 2015 08:28 PM #71

@wrwlumpy

"Hotel del Coronado (also known as The Del and Hotel Del) is a historic beachfront hotel in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, California. It is one of the few surviving examples of an American architectural genre: the wooden Victorian beach resort. It is the second largest wooden structure in the United States (after the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon) and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977[3][5] and a California Historical Landmark in 1970.[4]

When it opened in 1888, it was the largest resort hotel in the world. It has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities through the years.[6] The hotel has been featured in numerous movies and books."

Dec 22, 2015 10:41 PM #75

@wrwlumpy Once again, great job on the photos and info. Didn't know that Ann Wilson of Heart was born in San Diego...the folks around here make a big deal out of her being "Seattle's own." Turns out she was a military brat whose folks moved up here during her HS years. Heart started out a Led Zeppelin cover band and were just breaking out nationally around the time I got out of KU.

Speaking of KU, don't know if it was mentioned on this thread, but SD was Wilt's last career stop, as player/coach of the San Diego Conquistadors of the ABA.

Dec 22, 2015 11:15 PM #76

Danny played for the San Diego Clippers with Larry Brown in 1989. In the same arena I saw Hendrix with Iron Butterfly, the local hero's. After Hendrix the audience was invited to stay and see the premier of the Movie "MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR." A long, loud, wonderful evening. The Hendrix recording of "Red House" was recorded at that concert.

Dec 22, 2015 11:24 PM #77

@wrwlumpy Sounds like one amazing night. I was a big Butterfly fan, partly because of the organ licks. My Mom was organist at our church, and these guys made the organ sound cool again after having to listen to years of hymns. (Later I picked up on Jimmy Smith, who knocked it out of the park.)

Dec 22, 2015 11:40 PM #78

I saw Jimmy Smith at a club and restaurant located in the Union Station in 1972. I had all of his albums.

Dec 23, 2015 12:08 AM #79

@wrwlumpy Other than "Got My Mojo Workin'," I didn't really get into Jimmy until I took Dick Wright's History of Jazz class at KU. Dick was the general Manager at KANU (now KPR) and had a basement library of over 10,000 albums, mostly jazz & classical.

Dec 23, 2015 01:56 AM #80

Aaarrgggh!

Iowa State pulls one out against Cincy with (what else?) a late 3. Bearcats missed three game-winning shots at the end.

Oh well, I guess at least it helps our strength of schedule.

Dec 23, 2015 02:03 AM #81

Does anyone know a way to watch the game if you don't have a package that carries CBS college sports?

Dec 23, 2015 02:14 AM #82

WARNING TO KUBUCKETS PARTICIPANTS:

Drgnslayr has an itchy finger and can't stop pushing all the "like" buttons!

You guys post so much amazing stuff... both basketball and non-basketball.

Dec 23, 2015 02:29 AM #83

@JhawkAlum @Crimsonorblue22 posted a link on the CBS thread.

Dec 23, 2015 02:40 AM #84

@JhawkAlum I used to use First Row Sports, but it's a pain in the butt because you have to get rid of all the pop-up windows to watch a game.

Dec 23, 2015 02:47 AM #85

@nwhawkfan @JhawkAlum Somebody posted the steps for using first row but damn if I can find the thread or post now. It was very detailed.

Dec 23, 2015 03:50 AM #86

@nwhawkfan honestly feel a little bad for Iowa St this year. Liked their team a little when Hoiberg was there (and 0ther than a few douchebag nutjob fans, their student body is alright with me). I'm going to relish tearing their 7 man rotation apart this year. But, non-conference, go Clones.

Only Big XII team I root against out of conference these days is Kansas State. Even Ford and Drew have grown on me.

Dec 23, 2015 03:51 AM #87

@approxinfinity You check your temperature lately? Something causing you to be delusional. :smile:

Dec 23, 2015 03:52 AM #88

@brooksmd he needs you brooks, md!

Dec 23, 2015 03:52 AM #89

CBS strikes again! You'd think they'd realize that pissing people off into signing up for some sort of package to see the one game they poached off the other carriers is cannibalizing their business.

Dec 23, 2015 03:55 AM #90

@Crimsonorblue22 Two asprin and call me in the morning. But not too early. I'll be at the range shootin' clays until about 9.

Dec 23, 2015 03:56 AM #91

@brooksmd lol.

I wrote "Damn, I've gotten soft." after that original post, then chose to delete it... Nahh... Big XII 4eva. Would be even better if we could kick Texas to the curb. I honestly like Shaka, having taken classes at VCU and seeing a lot of him there, but Texas the University I cannot stand.

It's hard to root against the teams... I mean think back.. think back to Doc Sadlers dirty Nebraska team nutpunching us on the floor... or... Iowa State pre-Hoiberg even, or Michael Beasley stealing one from us... I felt the dark side of the force in those moments. But now man.. of the people on the floor, who's left to hate besides Weber?

Dec 23, 2015 03:58 AM #92

@approxinfinity Ford or Huggy Bear?

Dec 23, 2015 04:04 AM #93

@brooksmd

I've come to respect Ford. He doesn't fare well against us (and certainly its easier not to hate someone your coach humiliates a lot in recent years), but he actually seems to be a decent guy (accusations of recruiting improprietary aside) and seems to recruit nice kids, and has a decent amount of national success. I mean for the conference, he seems alright, right?

And Huggy Bear, man, that guy can flat out coach. My college roommate was a Cincy fan during the Kenyon Martin years, and I watched him closely. They ran him out of Cincy on a power play by their AD. He will recruit the right talent for his system; if he's managed to keep his mind and gets the right chemistry out of those guys, watch out!

The players respond well to both these guys; I believe because they're decent human beings and decent coaches.

Dec 23, 2015 04:05 AM #94

@approxinfinity Speaking of Huggy, I just tried to bring up the KU game on First Row Sports and got a pop-up ad for Huggies!

Dec 23, 2015 04:06 AM #95

...sadly, no game feed, though...

Dec 23, 2015 04:12 AM #96

@approxinfinity Always thought Cinc was about one of the dirtiest teams in bb under Huggy.

Dec 23, 2015 04:28 AM #97

@brooksmd They were definitely one of the strongest. They were ripped and super athletic, and didn't mind dropping someone with a hard screen or throwing some bows, but they were dirty by overpowering you. By strength and by speed and making unbelievably athletic plays.

Not by doing the five-step-Scheyer pivot and getting away with it, or getting 2 seconds added to the clock to make some last second half court shot, because your name is Duke.

They were a more respectably dirty - a bully.

Dec 23, 2015 06:29 PM #98

@approxinfinity

Ford and Drew have squandered more talent than just about any other coach I can think of.; Ford is certainly in the hot seat considering how much he makes and the lack of success he has had recently. I did not care for Shaka Smart at VCU and I care even less for him at Texas. Weber is a pretty decent coach, but he cannot recruit or keep players; he has KSU playing well above where anyone expected them to be given their losses in the off season. Huggy is a superior coach that has over overachieved and has won everywhere he has coached.

Dec 24, 2015 07:19 AM #99

@JayHawkFanToo Wow, I misspoke. I meant to say I have come to respect Drew. Don't have much respect for Ford still.
