How Many More Games Can KU Shoot Nearly 50% from Trey?
Jan 06, 2016 04:55 AM #1

This team no longer seems subject to shooting back to a 40 percent average. Do we have a 50% Trey Balling team for the season, as some hoped for early?

@jaybate-1.0 It sure looks like it. Having 3 point shooters all over the court really helps to open the floor for Perry to score inside also.

@DinarHawk

Yes and we still haven't seen Perry have career game yet. That will be sweet.

@jaybate-1.0 Perry should shoot every time he's open!

@Crimsonorblue22

Yes, it's time.

@Crimsonorblue22 Sometimes he is hesitant to shoot open threes when I think he should step right into it and launch. He is a good enough shooter to do that.

When Perry shoots the three it seems like the basket doubles in size as the ball floats through the air toward it. Doesn't it?

Is he saving it for a Regional Final or a National Championship? I'm excited to see Perry at his best! I think he was a 9.5 (out of 10) last night..

@bskeet I hope so! This is his last chance.

Good topic. Amazing how comfortable Perry does his shooting from downtown.
How's Svi doing? He's supposed to chip in more. His accuracy is declining or is it collapsed by limited PT?
What would this team be had Conner and AW3 stuck around...?

Practice makes perfect.

Or at least 45%.

@pa_grape slow and no D

What I like about it is this hasn't turned into a jack up a three all the time team. I know Bill Self wouldn't allow it, but we are developing an insurance policy in case the threes aren't falling. My biggest worry for our team is that we get into the dance and there's a trey lid on the basket. So we keep learning the inside game, play bad ball, or whatever we called it last year. Just in case.

50% as a TEAM seems like a tough clip to sustain, but 14 games is a fairly decent sample size. And I would think as long as the looks are mostly open ones it can be done, especially with this group of marksmen.

That said, we are just now entering conference season and the competition is going to be ridiculously fierce from here on out, meaning legs that are more tired than usual, which means less lift on the jumpshot, which means a lower percentage of shots going in. I'd suspect if we do maintain 50% shooting behind the arc the results will be much like the Baylor game where we do a lot of damage in the first half and then cool off some in the second.

I think 43-45% is more realistic, but I hope I'm wrong!

Jan 06, 2016 04:07 PM #15

@tis4tim I think 43-45 is more realistic also.

Jan 06, 2016 04:39 PM #16

@Hawk8086 I'll settle for 43-45% in Conference play - not 35% to pull our season average back to 43%.

Inside out, in rhythm almost tells me it's in as the shot goes up. If there is an open shot, we usually hit it. A lot of film has allowed Coach to give the freedom that these players now enjoy. One more pass to a more open man and Bob Davis yells SWISH!!! The difference with Buddy is that with someone in his grill it is still SWISH.

@tis4tim

Agreed. Great to hear from you. Don't be so scarce!

@jaybate-1.0

I read every word on this site (including your vast output) and contribute when I feel I have something worth adding. I learn oh-so-much more than I can possibly teach in this forum of extremely astute basketball minds. Well, that and raising a 4-year-old and a 7-month old puts a premium on free time and much of that is spent sleeping!

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and keep cranking out the quality reads. Sure beats trying to sink my teeth into some crappy best-seller.

@jaybate-1.0 50% trey balling team and 5 guys that can knock it down like that. Bonkers!
