Great decision. So happy to see him back

May 24, 2017 11:36 PM #2

@BeddieKU23 awesome! Where did you see the news?

May 24, 2017 11:42 PM #3

I saw it from Jeff Goodman on Twitter about 20 mins. ago. I think Svi wants to play in Italy. Regardless, I am really really really really happy.

All over Twitter. He announced on his instagram

May 24, 2017 11:44 PM #6

Makes me very happy for Svi and Jayhawk Nation! I do think it is the right decision for him, and believe he and DG should take the reins of leadership for this team, and show the country they deserve to be in the NBA. Another fantastic season to look forward to!!!

May 24, 2017 11:44 PM #7

So happy to say I was wrong hehe

May 24, 2017 11:46 PM #8

Best decision he could make for a possible NBA future. Euro-ball will always be an option for Svi. Glad to hear he will graduate a Jayhawk!

May 24, 2017 11:47 PM #9

Who uses Instagram anymore? Besides Svi

May 24, 2017 11:49 PM #10

Beautiful. Hot diggity dawg...

May 24, 2017 11:49 PM #11

Excellent. I see him splitting time at the 3 and the 4.

May 24, 2017 11:50 PM #12

He will be a good mentor for all the incoming freshmen and transfers.

May 24, 2017 11:54 PM #13

@dylans DG does a lot on it and Snacks is always posting stuff on his family and Hudy always has her weight lifting videos. I sometimes look when a link is provided but don't have an account or whatever you do. How's your spring? I took a much needed break and went down to the beach for a week - all the way down to South Padre. I got one "Rock Chalk" wearing my 13 straight shirt walking on the beach from a guy who said he had a good friend that had graduated from KU.

This could be big for us, so glad, we have a really good nucleus got some really good pieces, with a healthy Doke think Whitman is a nice piece, & with SVI Vick Preston & others this is really good.

Now I just have to find something to wash this crow down with lol. - -Time to break out some bud Light - - lol. - Well this makes for a nice evening my fellow Crimson & Blue - -now ready for our trip in What is it July? - -August to Italy? - -give the boys some time to get a feel.

Ok here is a question. Even though not eligible to semester can Cunliffe practice in Italy with us? - Would be nice. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Guess Dwight leaving could have been a deciding factor in Svi returning since that opened up a scholie.

Agree or disagree with this?

@RockChalkinTexas Hey, good to see @RockChalkinTexas on the board. How ya been lady? South Padre huh? Nice little vacation.

May 25, 2017 02:38 AM #27

@RockChalkinTexas Disagree at least for the beginning of the season. I also see no way Lightfoot is the second guy off the bench and Whitman is the last. Here's my list:
PG Graham
SG Newman
SF Svi
PF Whitman
C Udoka

Bench:
G Vick
PF Preston
G Garrent, before semester, Sam after
PF Lightfoot

May 25, 2017 02:46 AM #28

Crazy talented from top to bottom. The lowest expectations are for a former top 100 player and the Arizona Gatorade player of the year. No scrubs

May 25, 2017 03:00 AM #29

I finally figured it out: Svi wants that free trip to Italy, and will have yet more opportunity to showcase his talents for a career in Euroball if the NBA doesn't work out! Great strategy!

May 25, 2017 03:06 AM #30

What the hell am I supposed to do between now and October? Dammmmnit.

May 25, 2017 03:17 AM #31

Ok. Recruiting for the year done...Italy awaits...πŸ€—πŸ‘

May 25, 2017 03:20 AM #32

Svi came back just so Weber could whine another year about the Euro two-step

May 25, 2017 03:32 AM #33

@brooksmd Speaking of vacations - give me a hoot & holler when you know if you'll be in my neck of da woods & we'll see if we can make it happen... We can always drown worms, flies or even ourselves if we stay close to home... Always great shows for extra entertainment-went to Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, Moe Bandy just this past Sunday night, !0 min drive to theatre each way. No hassel, no headache, no problem. Even have a chauffeur if we talk to her right.

May 25, 2017 03:41 AM #34

@RockChalkinTexas #1 lotto pick (?) JJ & POY FM gone & we're still once again reloaded for another BG 12 title & potential # 1 seed?! Surprised ? Nah. It's KANSAS - that's what we do !! Take care woman, you're in our prayers.

May 25, 2017 05:23 AM #35

Very reassuring news, Svi's decision to return. Now if the god of good health should favor the Jayhawks, we should step forth with a full squad, starters and strong interchangeable bench. Wily Bill got the scholarship numbers worked out well in advance of this announcement.

May 25, 2017 07:32 AM #36

Let's hope he figures out how to play some defense.

May 25, 2017 09:33 AM #38

The only player that lost in this announcement is Vick. Not that he won't play a ton regardless but for him showcasing his game in a 30 minute + role would have been ideal for his professional aspirations after his Jr year. Might be the difference in getting him back as a Sr...

May 25, 2017 11:20 AM #39

How does this team replace Frank's refuse to lose mentality that was responsible for so much of last year's success? It doubt it will be from Devonte, who has tended to passively float through entire halves of games. Who will be the dog? Maybe Devonte will step up. I hope so. As always, I'm excited for the next season and I look forward to reading everyone's posts. RCJH

Tough to replace Mason in so many ways. His Jr year though wasn't flashy, he blended on a talented team but took it to another level his Senior year. We all wondered how we would replace Perry Ellis but those concerns left the building pretty quick once the season started. Devonte did the same thing his Jr year (deferring, playing his role) and now has the chance to use the blueprint Mason paved for him. This is Devonte's team and I'm sure he'll be eager to live up to those expectations. We have a great blend of NBA talent, veterans and young talent on this squad. Will be very interesting to see how it all meshes

I don't see the Mason/Josh (TRob had it too) hate to lose mentality in anyone on next year's team. And, I mean, all players don't like to lose obviously but I'm talking about that next level crazy. Who steps up in crunch time and gets buckets? I think it's impossible to know at this time.

May 25, 2017 12:14 PM #42

The roster is loaded from top to bottom! For the first time I think our b team/scouting team could get out of the first weekend of the NCAA tourney.

Charlie Moore

Lagerald Vick

Sam Cunliffe

Dedric and K.J.

Jack Whitman

May 25, 2017 02:08 PM #43

Yeehaw! I'm thrilled for Svi's return!

This should be his break-out year and I think he has a lot more game to show us. Especially love his ability to drive and finish at the rim as well as his sweet stroke from trey!

So glad I didn't jinx his return with an early prediction.

@BShark I'm not really so sure. - -You know what? I'm not so sure but what that doesn't turn out to be DeVonte this year. The last couple of years he been kind of like the complimentary player with Frank and Josh last year. This year his Senior year others looking to him this year more as the leader, Wouldn't surprise me if he did step up and be that one willing to hit or take that key crucial shot.

He at times disappeared last year BUT was it because he is just that way OR is it because he knew there was others that could/would take it when needed? - -Josh was the closest we have had to a true Alpha for some time, Frank to a some what lesser degree. Now it's Devonte turn to be the leader, I think the guys will look to him to fulfill that role, and I think he might just do that.

Also to a some what lesser maybe not even lesser I think maybe Newman has that kind of make up that take charge/take over a game type of attitude, those would be my guesses, could be wrong but then again - -I think this will be Devonte team - -time will tell. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@RockChalkinTexas

I mean, Frank is just ridiculously awesome and special. He will forever be a Jayhawk.

May 26, 2017 02:32 AM #55

@stoptheflop Devonte is fine. He deferred last year - he won't this year.

May 26, 2017 02:45 AM #56

@KUSTEVE

I hope you are right. Next year is his pivotal year in basketball. He can make his career go much smoother if he can dominate in his senior year.

He is extremely capable. He may be the most-capable player we have had during his years. Pure talent. But he needs to learn to focus his intensity into his game, every single game. Frank was the perfect role model!

May 26, 2017 02:55 AM #57

@drgnslayr thats what I noticed a lot last year and commented on. His focus is lacking periodically and he makes silly mistakes. Frank isnt eligible anymore, so he will need to step it up.

May 26, 2017 11:14 AM #58

@BeddieKU23 You mentioned Vick. I think Vick could start over Svi. He seemed favored down the stretch last season.

May 26, 2017 01:16 PM #59

HighEliteMajor said:

@BeddieKU23 You mentioned Vick. I think Vick could start over Svi. He seemed favored down the stretch last season.

Was Vick favored more because Svi was struggling with his shot which affected his entire game?

Definitely he could start. I've not wavered in my thought that he's going to have a big year regardless of whether Svi came back or not.

Here's one train of thought on what could happen:

Graham, Newman, Svi are all known for being shooters. Do we really need 3 players with similar skill sets on the floor?
Now if we insert Vick into the starting lineup instead of Svi we get "athlete" with developing perimeter & driving game. Vick is a better rebounder and had a bunch of hustle plays that extended possessions that are as valuable as stats that show up in the box score.

Will be interesting to see what Self favors.

Another train of thought is he favors Svi because he's a Senior. We've seen Self use that kind of favoritism in the past..

May 26, 2017 01:19 PM #60

@HighEliteMajor So many posters are over-optimistic about the new guys this time of year. I believe Preston and Garrett must earn their spots by quality play from the bench. Unless one of the new guys excels like Jackson and simply can't be held out of the starting lineup, my starting lineup is: Doke, Svi, Vick, Newman and Graham. These five represent the players with the most experience in the KU system and on the D1 court. Svi and Vick may be counted on for the rebounds that Doke doesn't get. But, I'm looking forward to being surprised by Coach Self. It seems to happen every year. RCJH

May 26, 2017 01:32 PM #61

Vick was way too close to every off the court problem last year (and had a serious issue the year prior) to earn my trust. A year of keeping his nose clean would sure help. Otherwise I hope he gets booted, regardless of on court production. I want players on the team I'm proud to root for.

May 26, 2017 01:43 PM #62

@dylans I'm done with the off the court issues from the last two years. I know the media, the KC Star and a few others will continue to bring up the past, but I've moved on and will gladly focus on this year's roster of quality young men and a fantastic coaching staff at the best university in the world. RCJH

May 26, 2017 01:55 PM #63

@stoptheflop Good for you! I hate woman beaters though.

...Never heard anything like that about Svi.

May 26, 2017 03:52 PM #64

@dylans remember Calvert wouldn't sign the release so KU could tell the whole story!

May 26, 2017 04:15 PM #65

@Crimsonorblue22 I'm glad there was no video. Too much smoke for no fire. I hope he proves me wrong.

I think every recruit is of high moral character as soon as they sign, but some prove otherwise. I hope there is no off-court crap this year. I had enough the last few years for a lifetime.

May 26, 2017 04:34 PM #66

@dylans once zenger told mr Calvert he'd be glad to discuss it, all news articles stopped. No more smoke! Transfer!

May 26, 2017 04:38 PM #67

@stoptheflop You know what, that's a solid starting rotation there. We know the 4 guard line up is killer, scary good. But, I just don't think that Coach Self will start with that. I think he starts 3 guards and 2 bigs, then when offense or fouls or matchups dictate, then he swings out his "KU death line up"

May 26, 2017 04:47 PM #68

@dylans Aww come on man. I think the kid deserves a second chance. Live and learn man, live and learn. I'm not diminishing the fact that he physically assaulted a woman. But, it happened, its over and I think he has learned from it and will be a better man moving forward.

May 26, 2017 05:13 PM #69

@stoptheflop I don't think HCBS guarantees anybody a starting spot. They are earned through ability, determination and effort in practice and games. However, he won't hesitate to yank a freshman for a mistake that would simply earn a more seasoned player a loud vocal comment.

May 26, 2017 05:26 PM #70

@dylans

I believe people still have the presumption of incense until proven guilty. There is no proof that I know that he ever beat his girlfriend and it came down to case of he said-she said.

Have you heard of buyer's remorse? The son of an acquaintance of mine apparently had sex with his girlfriend (both were underage HS students) and when her father found out and went ballistic, she claimed she was raped. He was found guilty based on her word and now he is in the sex offender registry. She later recanted and now he is trying to get the conviction overturned and get his name off the registry which apparently is considerably more complicated that one would think.

We should not jump to conclusions absent proof or a conviction. The kid deserves the benefit of the doubt and presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law and not on a biased newspaper with an agenda. Just my opinion.

May 26, 2017 06:03 PM #71

@JayHawkFanToo He was found guilty enough to earn a couple years probation by the school. That's not innocent. I don't really care at this point. He's been mentioned in almost every negative article about the team. Maybe he didn't do it, but was present. Is he just weak and unable to steer people away from trouble or is he the catalyst? Not someone I want my kids hanging out with as everyone around him gets in trouble.

I appreciate the hell out of guys like Svi, Frank, Graham, etc. Guys who gave what they could on the court, took care of business in the classroom, and didn't run afoul of the law or team rules.

It takes a lot more to earn trust back than to gain it the first time around.

May 26, 2017 06:09 PM #72

I don't want to beat the kid up about it any further, I'm just leary about him. I'm not going to build a strong supporting case as I desperately want to be 100% WRONG!

May 26, 2017 08:04 PM #73

Well, here is what I'm thinking. What I don't understand is why we continue to talk about this? This is a subject this has been talked about till it's been drug into the ground. My take on this, it's over , it's the past. We can't change the past, things that happened in the pas is the past. It's time to move on. I would think we would want to be talking about more relevant issues. Like talking about our upcoming season - - our trip to Italy - - Our new comers - -Our Transfers, - Our returning players.

This incident with LaGerald is history. If like you say the school (KU ) has him on probation - -then this is what it is, he is dealing with bad decisions he made. He is now paying for that through his probation & he very well could be paying on anything that the legal system has given him. Again the thing is, the past is the past. You and or I have no say we are not the Judge -Jury - Or Convictioner. The Legal system has had it's say in this. It's time to move on to more positive things about the team - -the players.

We had our share of Negativism this PAST season - -but now - Josh is gone - - Bragg has transferred- - Vick is dealing with his bad decisions. Really no reason to keep beating this up - -it's done. So the question is - -WHY do we want to continue to bring this up - - - -AGAIN? -I always say don't look in the mirror, you can't change the past, don't look ahead cause you can predict the future, - -just live today for today . - -Let's talk about Positive for awhile. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

May 26, 2017 08:55 PM #74

@dylans I believe the whole team was mentioned in every negative comment about the rape in the team dorm. You gonna throw them all under the bus too?

May 26, 2017 09:02 PM #75

@brooksmd I Truly and sincerely apologize I didn't see who you were referring too. My 1st thought was - -where did he get I was throwing anyone under the bus. - -Again my bad, my eyes are failing me. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

May 26, 2017 10:50 PM #76

@dylans

With all due respect, there is no proof whatsoever that Vick was ever put on probation. Even the Star article β†— indicates that the process used was preponderance of evidence, which means if there is 50.1% chance that he did it and 49.9% that he did not do it then he is found guilty and probation was recommended but there is no evidence that the probation was ever implemented.

From the Star article...

University investigations use preponderance of evidence standards β€” which means the matter in dispute is more likely than not to be true β€” to determine if violations of school policy occurred. It is not known if a report was filed with campus police but Vick has not been charged with a crime.

The KU office recommended Vick be put on university probation for two years, The Star has learned. It isn’t known if Vick was ever put on that probation or, if he was, if he is still on it. He continues to play.

That office declined to discuss the case and referred The Star to Joe Monaco, director of strategic communications for KU’s public affairs office.

β€œDue to federal law,” he said, β€œand to protect the rights of all individuals involved, the university cannot comment on individual IOA investigations.”

Had they found that Vick committed a serious offense, the case would have been referred to the police and criminal charges would have been filed. If a criminal act took place and KU did not reported it, it would place itself in legal jeopardy and I would think the school would not do that even for an elite athlete.

As far as I know and according to Coach Self, he was not allowed to see the details or findings of the case and we don't know if the female in question received the same alleged recommendation or if any of it was ever implemented; if it had, I am sure the Star would have been all over it.

So let's not rush to judge something for which there is no evidence.

May 26, 2017 11:01 PM #77

@JayHawkFanToo Amen.
