Awesome news. Hope they do it in the same weekend one year. Actually would love to see it the same night but I can imagine they will space it so each has their own spotlight

IDK. I'm an old curmudgeon for sure, but they've not even accomplished a final four. I know Frank was POY, not sure if DG gets it or not, but, sorry, I'm not sure I'm seeing enshrinement in the rafters for these two. Just my opinion. Anyone else feel that way?

@wissox I think Frank meets the old requirements with consensus national POY and 1st team AA. I don't see DG winning the national award, I think that will go to Brunson from NOVA.

Mar 05, 2018 09:10 PM #5

@wissox They might be expecting DG to be a consensus All American.

Bill says Devonte qualifies for being Big12 poy. Seems like small potatoes for a school like KU. Love Devonte, but he hasn't done enough...yet. I hope by April we all have no doubt he's earned this.

I think Frank is an easy choice with NPOY and AA selection. DG is debatable if he doesn't get NPOY or a FF birth this season. I know some think we are retiring too many guys. I'm kinda split on the matter.

Mar 05, 2018 10:17 PM #8

Don't get me wrong I've loved both players during their time here. We pretty much have all American types every year so we're going to run out of numbers to retire.

I saw the list of Jayhawks with numbers retired and hadn't even heard of several of them!

@wissox Not a lot of footage on BH Born or Charlie Black out there. Now if you're talking about the modern guys since the rules have been relaxed, I'd be surprised if you could stump many of the bucketeers.

On that note, Kansas hadn't repeated as national champs in nearly a century. That's a streak I'd love to see broken.

I ask this question, are there two guys that you would like to be the face of Kansas basketball more than either Frank or DG?

Those two are just about as good as it gets.

Nope!

These guys were /are awesome at KU. They played hard for KU for four years. But there are several other players that would be ahead of them as the face of KU basketball, IMO.

@Gunman I think the face of KU ball in the Self era is Thomas Robinson, Perry Ellis, Frank Mason and Devonté Graham. Those have separated themselves IMO, I feel that Paul Pierce, Drew Gooden, Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich were the ones that were the face of Roy’s time here.

Honestly it’s the coach that is the face of the bball program. That’s part of the reason he’s paid so well, brand recognition generated by success. Roy = UNC, Coach K = Duke Boeheim = ‘Cuse. Etc. Players are more the flavor of the month, @kjayhawks didn’t even mention Mario!

Or Raef, merely all conference for 3 years (first time was end of the Big Eight), and the Big 12 POY 2 years in a row, as well as 2 years consensus 1st team All American.

How soon we forget.

Mar 06, 2018 12:54 PM #17

@mayjay That 97 team was one of our best teams in the history of the program.

Mar 06, 2018 03:35 PM #18

@KUSTEVE Jacque was my fav. Unfortunately I arrived on campus in the fall of ‘97. :cry:

Mar 06, 2018 04:54 PM #19

@KUSTEVE 97 is why I hate Arizona so much.

Mar 06, 2018 05:23 PM #20

@kjayhawks I agree w/those too.

Mar 06, 2018 07:10 PM #21

@dylans I should've added Mario, my mistake

Mar 06, 2018 07:11 PM #22

@kjayhawks & Rush!

Mar 06, 2018 07:13 PM #23

@Barney The heck with it I'll add all former Jayhawks, they'll always mean something to me.

Mar 06, 2018 08:05 PM #24

@Gunman Totally agree. I will be happy to see Frank and DG have jersey's hanging from the rafters with their names on them. However, when talking about faces of KU basketball, I hope no one forgets the fact that Manning and Chalmers were responsible for hanging two other very important banners in the Fieldhouse that are extremely hard to come by. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!

College coaches are paid so much because they don't share funds with players. They are paid in accordance with how much revenue their programs produce.

Even though coaches never score any points, the players they develop are responsible for winning games that does influence the amount of income to universities.

Coaches change but the support for the university is still there; for the players on the court.

Going all the way back to Dick Harp, new coaches at KU have inherited very good talent when they took the reins. The FACE was there before they took the job.

Hope it continues that way. ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!
