Rain
May 08, 2019 11:15 AM #1

It's been nuts lately in NE Kansas lately. There were some spots near me on the verge of flooding yesterday and then it rained hard again all last night.

@Crimsonorblue22 are you getting it bad where you are?

May 08, 2019 01:03 PM #2

My favorite golf course by work is closed from flooding.

Sounds about right. I'm heading out soon and if there is flooding, I'll get some pics.

Be safe everyone

Look out for flash floods as well. Most of the ground is completely saturated, so everything is straight runoff. Creeks and rivers could still rise even though the rain has stopped.

Yesterday the creek near my house was right on the bank. Had some time to drain out but not much.

@BShark

rained about 2 weeks straight in my neck of the woods in the Northeast. Typical though after 6 months of snow

May 08, 2019 03:07 PM #8

@BShark to much, water in unfinished part of basement, pain in butt.

May 08, 2019 03:28 PM #9

@Crimsonorblue22 Wow! You have an indoor pool ????

May 08, 2019 03:30 PM #10

Update: creek is flooded but just barely.

May 08, 2019 03:54 PM #11

2” of rain here was a nice start. The 12” they got 30 miles down the road a couple nights ago is a bit much. The county had to break out snow plows to move hail stone off the road. -pretty gnarly to see hail drifts.

The Wife had to go to Winfield - -they officials was saying that they were or the Turnpike was flooded over or the way she goes to get back home. - The ground Sooo soaked here my neighbor truck literally sunk down in his front yard and he couldn't get out - - truck just sittin in the yard and sinkin down

I am so sick and tired of rain. I think it is supposed to rain some more tonight in the KC metro area.

May 08, 2019 08:16 PM #15

@Woodrow I feel your pain - hope you're not getting any flooding - but I personally will take the rain over the frickin snow/sleet/sub-zero temps any day.

May 08, 2019 08:36 PM #16

@nuleafjhawk It is the lesser of two evils for me. I am a outdoors person so snow and rain makes it tough to run, play golf, mow, etc...

May 08, 2019 09:20 PM #17

@nuleafjhawk I with you I that! I’ve been working outdoors during all the daytime rain the last few days. 30+ miles of tromping thru mud on a surgically repaired knee - all is well. 400+ miles of mud under the tires too and I’ve only visited a couple bar ditches temporarily. Lol. Still way better than working outdoors in the snow.

I’m willing to bet most of the people complaining about the rain (not necessarily here, just as a whole) are indoors right now! It’s like a radio show complaining about the heat they only see from the car to the office door. 😂

Stay safe out there! Here’s hoping everyone has dry feet tonight (and basements @Crimsonorblue22) flooding is no fun.

May 09, 2019 11:58 AM #19

@dylans where is that at on the Turnpike?

@Woodrow Wellington.

May 09, 2019 12:36 PM #22

Where are you? Not there I presume since you said you didn't get much.

May 09, 2019 01:47 PM #23

Lots of road closures throughout central Kansas. If you see a road closed, DO NOT drive on it even if the water has receded. In some areas, water damage may have eroded the road, making it dangerous to drive onto. The road may buckle or give way from the weight of your vehicle without warning. BE SAFE!

I live right near Lake Michigan. Last night after running I walked home along the beach and about half of the beach is gone because the lake has gone up that high from winters snow melt and heavy spring rains. I suspect you're going to hear some shoreline erosion stories in the next couple of years on the GL's.

What I learned from living in the south is one road i often drove was a windy two laner with severe ditches and the road would flood. While I knew there wasn't feet of water on the road, you really couldn't tell where the pavement was and the threat of driving into one of the deep ditches full of water was enough to make me turn around.

Y'all be safe. TURN AROUND DON"T DROWN!

One of my life goals is to have a vacation home on Lake Michigan. So I hope it doesn't erode too fast lol.

In less than 2 weeks we’ve had 14inches of rain total and that’s with my 5 inch gauge overflowing twice. I’ve been living in central Kansas my whole life, can never remember that much in that short of time.

May 09, 2019 05:17 PM #27

@BShark west of dodge city 50 miles. Only 3” here. 25 miles east over 12” one night. There was a cement truck mixer full of set up concrete in the draw. It got washed out of the 15 ft hole it was in and over the highway and was deposited 100 yards into the neighboring field. Water is a very powerful force. Most destructive on earth.

May 09, 2019 05:19 PM #28

@dylans usually it doesn’t rain in western Kansas unless there’s a 150% chance lol. It probably won’t rain again til September now.

Yep, in September - just when everybody's trying to get wheat planted:anguished:

The best part about lake front property is you can always get someone to overpay when you are done with it.

Yea it's the saving of the money so you can overpay someone else for it the first time that's the issue lol.

May 09, 2019 11:16 PM #33

@kjayhawks Wow, that's a lot of rain for central Kansas. Hoping some of it trickles down to help refill the Ogallala.

May 09, 2019 11:33 PM #34

@Kcmatt7 If you set your sites a little lower, you can have a nice lakefront home on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin for a fraction of over on the sunset coast. Reasonable houses in cities like Sheboygan, Kenosha, etc are frequently across the street from the lake and public parks. Not quite the same as right on the water, but still very nice, and relatively affordable.

The dream is Traverse City, but Om sure when push comes to shove I won’t end up being too picky.

Buy a couple lots away from the lake and bring on the coastal erosion!!! You’ll have inexpensive lakefront property in no time. 😝

May 10, 2019 02:32 AM #37

@Kcmatt7 Traverse City is nice from what I hear. I've a cousin and uncle on the lake there. A bit cold in the winter however!

Oh I’m sure haha. But the summer weather is absolutely amazing. The little kayak river that runs through the heart of the city is great. Bike trails all over. Restaurants are top notch. Several breweries in the town. And the best pie I’ve ever had in my life!!

" But the summer weather is absolutely amazing."

All six weeks of it! Lol. After spending the majority of my life in Kansas, I'm ready to move somewhere with more moderate weather. I'll have the pies shipped to me.

May 11, 2019 07:13 PM #40

@Kcmatt7 You got me thinking I want to move now!
