KU vs. dook
Jun 12, 2019 07:34 PM #1

I'm super stoked for this matchup. Big contrast in styles, experience, and likability. I like KU to absolutely work the Devils in this one:

G: Dotson = Jones

This is a tough matchup to nail down. Jones is a really good defender, but not sure he can stay with Dotson in transition or if Devon drives it. Devon really needs to stay out of foul trouble. If Jones keeps shooting poorly, I'll like KU here.

G: Moss > Stanley

I don't love Stanley as much as some. He's a freak show athlete, but his skill level isn't great for a 2. Moss is bigger, a better shooter, and really improved defensively last year. Wait until Self gets ahold of him!

G: Agbaji > Moore
Word out of workouts is Ochai is primed for some kind of year, and don't be surprised if this is his last year in Lawrence. Moore is a good player too and very long for a wing. Ochai may have some trouble scoring, but should get a bunch of looks on lobs if K wants to play zone.

F: Silvio < Hurt

Silvio is still kind of an unknown given that he hasn't played in over a year. At very least, he'll work Hurt on the boards. I don't know if Silvio will be great at defending Hurt in space, and whether Hurt is consistent enough as a shooter to make it a real threat. He's just such a good passer that he could do some damage.

F: Doke >>>>> Carey

Carey is about an overrated a top 5 prospect as I've seen in a long time. Not really a motor to speak of and he thinks he's a guard half the time. Also Doke is going to be angry. You don't mess with Doke when he's angry. Carey has never seen anyone like Doke. Carey could be an issue if he can step out and shoot or drive. In some cases we may need to go small. Which leads me to...

Bench: KU >>>>> dook.

No real contest here. K's squad is really only working with a couple serviceable guys off the bench in DeLaurier, O'Connell, and White/Baker (are they the same person?). KU rolls in with Big Dave, Garrett, and now Jalen Wilson. Gives us great positional versatility to go big or small. It would be fun to watch Wilson guard Hurt and Silvio guard Carey. And no doubt Garrett can lock down anyone on dook's roster other than Carey.

If KU even kind of shoots it ok, could be a 15 point game. Even though this specific group hasn't played much together, they all have experience in high level college basketball. Every starter has played in and won a NCAA Tournament game. Silvio and Doke played in a Final Four. And Self doesn't like losing these games. Remember how he coached circles around another inexperienced dook team? Easy to see a repeat here.

Sorry for the long post. I'm just excited and on staycation!

I'd say Dotson > Jones and SDS = Hurt until we see both SDS and Hurt play in college this season. I would not be surprised to see De Sousa outplay Hurt early in the season.

Also that Kansas lineup = Sophomore, Senior, Sophomore, Junior, Senior

While that Duke lineup = Sophomore, Freshman, Freshman, Freshman, Freshman. And their bench kind of sucks.

Kansas by 12 in that one.

Jun 12, 2019 08:02 PM #3

What was it someone said? Wanting to see SDS/Doke swipe that bandana off Hurt’s head!

Jun 12, 2019 08:08 PM #4

Hurt is listed at 215 pounds and the scouting report on his recruiting page mentions that he needs to get a lot stronger. His ability to stretch the floor and shoot from the perimeter is going to be a problem, but he's also going to get manhandled by De Sousa if he goes anywhere near the basket.

There are only three ways I see the game being even a little close.

  • Jones controls the game on both ends, causing havoc on D while getting the other young guys good looks.
  • Hurt or Moore just shoot the ball lights out. Like a 30 burger.
  • They go zone and we can't find a way to score.

Here's how I see the game going: Duke's young guys come out strong. Bill gets pissed and calls a timeout down 11-3 after Jones gets a steal and a breakaway. We start feeding Doke and DeSousa. Carey picks up a couple of quick fouls and is out 6 minutes into the game. They start doubling down low, but then Moss and Wilson hit a couple of 3s. We storm back, taking a commanding lead 38-30 with 4 minutes left.

At this point, K, realizing he is about to get ran out of this gym, fakes a heart attack and gives up on the season like he did a few years ago when they were terrible. KU goes on to win by 20.

Kansas is going to destroy Duke. Imagine Hurt trying to compete with rebounds with Silvio. It’s going to be like watching LeBron take out Delonte West.

@rockchalkuncsux yeah Silvio helped take out Bagley and Wendell Carter in the Elite Eight. Hurt is toast.

Underrated aspect of this class is that the craziest parent is mama Braun and she isn't toooo bad. The Wilsons seem very realistic about where Jalen is at and McBride is extremely grounded.

Guess we just don't know much about Enaruna at all in this regard. We really haven't had any problems with foreign players in this situation though. Diallo situation involved "handlers".

Jun 13, 2019 01:15 PM #19

Oh my god, was this a zero handlers class? @FarmerJayhawk do you know anything about Enaruna in that regard?

It does appear this class lacks any ego or potential issues going forward. Hopefully the kids are happy here. I would love to see all 4 here at least 3 years and I think that's a good possibility. We could be looking at the future core that leads to glory- Virginia's core that won the title this year was built in similar manner

As far as Enaruna, no. I do know Braun's recruitment was handled by the JoCo yoga moms. I think we had to back up the Brinks truck full of Starbuck's and Barefoot wine.

You know, just for the hell of it, I'm giving a final score - KU 84, Duke 76

Kansas 82 Duke 68

I think it’ll be a 15 point game. KU flavor of course

Jun 14, 2019 07:08 PM #30

@jayballer73

Guess I need to define "beat down."

When it comes to Duke, I consider anything over 10 to be a beat down. That amount shows some level of superiority whereas a 2-point victory seems more circumstantial and less about superiority.

@jayballer73 Say what? I pick the winner of KU games at 82%, which happens to be Coach Self's winning percent. In other words, I pick KU to win every game. I just threw the final score out there because I want us to kick Dook's ass. My final score predictions pretty much suck overall so I don't track those ( although I have come within 1 or 2 points of the final score on a few occasions). I only track the stat that makes me look good. BTW, the NCAA penalties, if we get busted, will not kick in until at least 2020/2021 :

Duke has an acceptance rate of 8.6%. That means their basketball players are elite students. We should be impressed by them.

Little secret: a lot of students (including basketball players) take intro classes at NC Central, a HBCU in Durham.

What, you’re telling me that athletes get preferred treatment to get into an elite academic institution that they otherwise would have no chance at gaining entry, just because they get an athletic scholarship?

Hmmm.

I don't think that's it.

From the article:

It’s a world-class private institution with the admissions flexibility of, say, a state school.

I think he's saying that while you'd expect private institutions to have very rigid high standards of excellence in academics, Duke in fact has very flexible admissions standards, similar to what you might expect at a state school.

Oct 03, 2019 02:26 AM #51

@approxinfinity I'm aware of the different standards. It used to crack me up. There was this big doofus I taught that had one attribute Duke liked. He was 6'5" and 300 pounds! I used to see recruiting letters for him from Duke. Used to crack me up because Nick barely graduated, had to beg for extra work the week before graduation just so he could pass my class! I will say, he grew up a lot (not physically!) and ended up playing football at Memphis and actually graduated college so he pulled it together!

rockchalkwyo said:

Yes and no. Private schools have a lot of leeway in who they accept and why. State schools less so. Stanford doesn’t take academic exceptions, dook does because they can stash the kid at NCCU for any “hard” classes. To my knowledge, UNC cannot make exceptions for people who wouldn’t get in otherwise. I know it’s been a frustration for Roy over the years.

Anybody up this way going to see KU beat Duke? I'll be there. NYC has an active alumni fan base that meets at the Cornerstone Tavern on 50th Street and 2nd Avenue.

Oct 29, 2019 05:16 PM #57

Bumping this to say dook only beat noted juggernaut Northwest Missouri State 69-63 and shot a sterling 2-16 from 3. Only guys that hit were Stanley and walk-on Justin Robinson. Jones and Hurt both 0-3, Moore 0-4, Carey 0-1 and didn't play much due to foul issues. Exhibition disclaimers apply but we could rek them next week.

Oct 29, 2019 05:25 PM #58

@FarmerJayhawk

I read an article about the game, a real doom and gloom on why Mark Williams should look elsewhere with no "surefire OAD's" on the team. Yikes. Hopefully we can flex on them in a week

Oct 29, 2019 05:26 PM #59

I was looking at their roster over the weekend, and I know the Freshman are talented and highly rated but I don't see a ton of talent on that roster. They will be 7 deep maybe 8 and Tre Jones is going to have to be nearly perfect every game for them to win. ( against a decent opponent) Vernon Carey will be able to bully a lot of teams with his size, but not against Doke.

I doubt we blow them out, but I will be pretty dissapointed if we don't win this game.

Oct 29, 2019 07:44 PM #60

@FarmerJayhawk Apparently Vernon Carey Jr. has problems being engaged and giving 100% effort all the time. I'd bet he'll be better against Kansas, just because he'll be more excited to play against us than he was to play Northwest Missouri St.

Here's the box score: https://goduke.com/documents/2019/10/26//Duke_NWMS_Box_Score.pdf ↗

I'm a little worried about De Sousa guarding Hurt if that match-up happens. I know Hurt was 0-3 from 3, but he was 8-16 from the field overall, and Kansas has a pretty long and depressing history of opponent's big-men deciding to transform into Steph Curry when they play against us.

I'm not sure Duke wants Tre Jones taking 15 shots a game. A few of the freshman are going to have to step up and handle the scoring load for Duke to be elite this season.
