Hudy going to Texas
Aug 16, 2019 02:47 AM #1

Sad day. Would love to know why.

Aug 16, 2019 02:58 AM #2

Man surprisingly bad news. There are plenty of other trainers that can and will get the job done.

Aug 16, 2019 03:19 AM #3

Got tipped off earlier today this would happen. Rumor is it’s the reorganization of the medical staff but can’t say for sure.

Aug 16, 2019 03:21 AM #4

That totally,,, well,,,, sucks. Oil money, folks.

Aug 16, 2019 03:45 AM #5

Long changing things a lil to quickly. Bringing in his Arkansas buddies. I just hope Self agreed, not pissing him off. But Shaka, 🤮

Aug 16, 2019 04:18 AM #6

@Crimsonorblue22 But why would that affect Hudy? .... (a few minutes later) Okay, sorry, I read the article - understand now.

Aug 16, 2019 10:20 AM #7

Looks like we need a recruiting board for Athletic Trainers now..

Aug 16, 2019 10:22 AM #8

In all seriousness this is a big loss for KU. Reading the tea leaves of this sounds like KU messed up in a big way restructuring as Hudy isn't the only to leave KU since it happened. Since the kids are on break I'm sure Self has a short time frame to get someone in place before they get back for the start of school.

Thank you Hudy for your 15 years here. I never thought she'd leave. Always a hawk!

I know Hudy is free to pick where she lands as she chooses but in conference for Shaka. Disgusting choice.

Aug 16, 2019 10:59 AM #9

I'm sad to see her go, but we'll find someone good to replace her. Maybe Tyrel ...

Aug 16, 2019 12:54 PM #10

Damn. That’s a huge loss not just for the basketball and football teams but for KU as well. Hudy is arguably the best at what she does and was a great ambassador for the University. I can’t imaging Bill is very happy with this.

Aug 16, 2019 02:39 PM #11

That's a huge blow for the basketball program.

Good article from a few years ago.

Aug 16, 2019 04:10 PM #13

Will be able to watch her in Austin but damn it's going to be hard to see her in burnt orange:anguished_face:

Nothing official today here on UT site.

Aug 16, 2019 04:35 PM #14

@RockChalkinTexas I'd guess if coach wanted her to stay, she'd still be here? Love the new avi!

Aug 16, 2019 04:48 PM #15

@Crimsonorblue22

I believe the change to KU Medical College plus a LOT OF $$$$ helped her decision. She will have unlimited means to get their programs in shape and perhaps that is what her reasoning is.

Angry Jayhawk is what I want to see this coming conference season! Against every team! Every game!

Aug 16, 2019 04:50 PM #16

I thought Hudy did an amazing job, but maybe change will be good for both parties.

Aug 16, 2019 04:52 PM #17

She will be missed no doubt, but we are a top tier program so her replacement will solid.

Aug 16, 2019 04:58 PM #18

@dylans 2 yrs w/Dedric?

Aug 16, 2019 05:22 PM #19

I bet Texas is paying her a boat load of money.

Aug 16, 2019 06:13 PM #20

This an area where most of us have no idea who the best replacements may be. Any thoughts on an individual or timetable?

Aug 16, 2019 06:18 PM #21

Crimsonorblue22 said:

Lots of magic in the weight room, but you can't make someone athletic.

Dedric is definitely on your "coal in the stocking" list ...

Aug 16, 2019 06:31 PM #22

@HighEliteMajor I swear I could make him move better! I like him, just can't believe he can't improve!

Aug 16, 2019 07:01 PM #23

Hudy was a big reason behind a lot of players developing at KU. This is a huge change.

In the same way that our big man rotation took a hit when Manning left, this will affect development.

@RockChalkinTexas 🤮

Aug 16, 2019 08:42 PM #26

@Crimsonorblue22 A cattle prod would probably help Dedrick. Dude just didn’t understand how to hustle. I believe he believes he did hustle though.

Aug 16, 2019 08:47 PM #27

Had she remained at KU, Hudy's job would have looked slightly different this fall.

KU in May announced a "groundbreaking" collaboration with University of Kansas Health System and LMH Health called Kansas Team Health, aiming to minimize potential conflicts of interest between medical personnel and the university's coaches and administrators. Under the policy, Hudy and about 40 other sports medicine staffers — other strength and conditioning coaches, physicians, athletic trainers, nutritionists and wellness coordinators — were to be converted to employees of University of Kansas Health Systems, reporting to medical professionals rather than athletic department personnel.

That was from Topeka cap.

Aug 16, 2019 08:50 PM #28

Not liking Jeff long at the present.

Aug 16, 2019 08:52 PM #29

@Crimsonorblue22 Agreed. This is a real misstep.

Aug 16, 2019 08:54 PM #30

@dylans Dedric was on a different speed than everyone else. He always looked like he played in slow motion.

Aug 16, 2019 08:59 PM #31

@KUSTEVE
Even after my surgery I could jump higher than him

Aug 16, 2019 09:30 PM #32

@RockChalkinTexas Ha!

Sounds like the AD is being proactive so as to make med staff independent. Would seem to be a good move to help limit liability. Just a thought.

I was wondering how much KS team health knows about s and c? Pretty sure, not much. Kinda wonder how that all works. I know she is employed by them and probably has to wear their polo?🤣. They are calling the shots. Do they let hudy do her clinics in the off season? Have they cut her gravy train off. Her equipment is expensive. I'm sure her budget has changed and maybe her paycheck? Will this hurt getting a new person? Tait said Self hadn't thought of anyone yet. Made me think this was a surprise. I also heard she was let go? Who knows? I have several friends that think she was over rated. Not sure what I think. Lots of questions, I think the timing stinks. Do these people have contracts?

Aug 17, 2019 04:12 AM #36

@Crimsonorblue22 Texas Athletics has literally twice the budget of Kansas. They will have no problem paying for her equipment and her probably much higher salary.

Aug 17, 2019 04:42 AM #37

@kjayhawks yep, not worrying about Texas

Aug 17, 2019 05:01 AM #38

“(The) coach is still involved in the hiring,” Long said in May. “But there’s others involved as well to make sure that that strength coach or that trainer has the proper credentials and understands our model and can operate and work in our new model.”

Understands our model and can work in our new model. Glad the coach is still involved in the hiring!

Aug 17, 2019 05:17 AM #39

@Crimsonorblue22 I hope Bill likes Jeff Long.

Long said, “We appreciate Coach Hudy’s contributions to Kansas Athletics and are proud that she has been recognized nationally as a role model for young women who are interested in sports performance. We wish her well as she pursues other challenges.”

Just a role model for young women? I (40 year old man) respected the hell out of her! Does Long have a problem with Hudy? Is he a meat head? Or did he just adopt a bad policy?

Aug 17, 2019 12:52 PM #42

Just think this is NOT a good move. - - Hudy did a un-believable job with the guys - - plus I think the players had a true likeness and respect for her and the things she brought to the table for them.

I don't know how many times I heard different people players speak about her and what a great job she had done Sure hope this doesn't come back to bite us in the ass as far as conditioning and strength goes with the guys. - She gave many years to this School - not really sure this is what she really wanted to do - -But have to respect here decision.- Again hope this doesn't hurt us in the long run

Kinda like When Danny left from Coaching our Big's - - Still don't think we have had anyone on his level as far as Coaching the Big's At Any rate - - Thank you Hudy what you gave the University - -sorry to see you go to - to fricken Texas of all places -- Smart sure doesn't deserve you - Gonna miss you - good luck - -always a Jayhawk - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Aug 17, 2019 05:18 PM #45

I noticed that too.

Aug 17, 2019 05:23 PM #46

I don't even recognize Doke with his new Hudy Body!

Aug 17, 2019 05:29 PM #47

@dylans I think the comment about being a role model for young women is due to Hudy breaking down people's stereotypes about s & c coaches. No one ever doubted that men can be those coaches, but she no doubt brought attention to women that these jobs can be sought by them.

Unless you were familiar with Hudy at UConn, how many of us KU fans even considered that the basketball s&c job might be filled with a woman?

Aug 17, 2019 05:38 PM #48

@Crimsonorblue22
Got to wondering if this isn't a "last chance" to save Shaka's job....He is definitely on the edge and attendance has dramatically nose dived. Plus they have to pay for the new stadium and with turnout so low, they look to be on their heels and gasping for any reasons to blame past years' efforts on "not having the right strength coach" and telling fans to "give it some time".

Agreed. I have no issues with them instituting it.

Sucks Hudy wanted to leave because if it, but ultimately this is a good move LT.

Aug 18, 2019 09:09 PM #52

Guys, let's relax. Hudy is good, very good, and undoubtedly helped our teams - but she was the strength and conditioning coach, can and will be replaced.

Aug 19, 2019 01:20 PM #53

@Marco I'm sure she has capable assistants that can step up, and continue the program Hudy put into place.

Aug 19, 2019 04:33 PM #54

The whole reorganization of the S&C staff was to limit the AD's liability in this age of concussions and all that. We're the first, but everyone will eventually move to this model.

I do appreciate the point that it was her own choice at the end of the day. But jb is right, they changed it up on her

Aug 19, 2019 07:59 PM #63

I am not a S&C guy (don't need it, being so buff and all) and don't know why KU wanted to go in a different direction. Why did they? Did they want to go more lean - concentrate more on agility and speed rather than bulk - what?

Aug 19, 2019 09:16 PM #64

Aug 20, 2019 01:18 PM #66

@approxinfinity I honestly meant nothing by it, just - she's gone, let's move on. Remember when Ol' Roy left? Good grief, some people STILL hate him for that. Personally, I was really ticked for about 5 years then I thought " Hey, he did a great job for KU, kind of re-ignited a passion for a lot of people that had slacked off on KU Basketball." I got over it and now I root for him whenever they're not playing us.

And maybe because I'm a homer, I will never understand people who leave KU - - BASKETBALL - - to go somewhere else. Makes no sense to me.

Aug 20, 2019 02:50 PM #67

And maybe because I'm a homer, I will never understand people who leave KU - - BASKETBALL - - to go somewhere else. Makes no sense to me.

100%

That’s the tough thing about her exit. Leaving for something better?!? How is the same position at Texas better??? I’m just surprised. I hope Long didn’t screw us. Oh well. Next

Aug 20, 2019 03:42 PM #68

Texas is one of the biggest athletic departments in the country. While KU is a great basketball program, there's really no comparison between the UT athletic department and KU. It's the equivalent of being the starting shortstop for the Yankees and being the starting shortstop for the Diamondbacks. Yeah, both are in the majors, and the guy with the D-backs may be the better player, but from a prestige perspective, there just isn't any comparison.

Hudy has made quite a career for herself. She broke into a male dominated field, moved from a small D1 school in UConn to a nationally recognized P5 program, and now is at the biggest athletic department in the country. Hudy basically moved to the top of her field. Not sure many of us would pass up a job that allowed us to move to the top of our chosen field. I can't blame her for doing the same, particularly when she had no previous ties to KU.

Aug 20, 2019 05:29 PM #69

@justanotherfan Well,,,, and I say good luck Hudy and thank you for your service - Next!!

Aug 20, 2019 07:56 PM #70

@justanotherfan Didn’t Hudy dislike having to mess with football players? I though she was basketball only hire at Texas, so how’s it a step up from KU basketball to Texass basketball? I understand Texas athletics overall is huge, much more impressive than KU as a program... but just basketball is something different. She didn’t leave for Texas, she left to get away from KU and I’d like to understand why more wasn’t done to keep her.

Aug 20, 2019 08:04 PM #71

@nuleafjhawk I understand your feelings, because we are both diehard fans--we can't imagine switching! But we also have to remember she came to KU to take a new job. She isn't an alum, and her tenure has been purely as a coach doing a job. That doesn't create the type of school loyalty found in those of us who have been fans since grade school, or who attended at the beginning of adulthood while experiencing all the fun and passion college entails. People abandoning lifelong school loyalty I don't get, but people taking good opportunities I do.

So, instead of "Don't let the door..." I would say, "Thanks for giving us such great years. We will remember you fondly." Sounds like your eventual feeling about Roy.

Aug 20, 2019 08:31 PM #72

@dylans she's doing men's and women's bb. In my opinion she was being asked to do more, like do the dishes and the laundry. Think the the new health services want more out of their employees year round. Cut costs! I'm sure Texas will pay her more and let her do her thing on the side.

Aug 20, 2019 08:31 PM #73

@mayjay I really do try hard to put myself in other's shoes. But if you're at - arguably - THE best basketball program in the nation - why do you leave to go to Texas????

I could see ---gasp--- Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke - those kinds of names.

Forgive me for asking this, I really don't know. Is she just the strength coach for basketball - or does she do football and other sports too? If so, then I could see that. Although, if she's the strength coach for football - what better opportunity to start at the ground floor and build a dynasty than at Kansas?

Aug 20, 2019 08:43 PM #74

@nuleafjhawk The strength and conditioning program was recently reassigned and no longer reported to KU Athletics. She may not have a been a fan of that change or her new bosses.

$$$ is also likely a factor as she'll be able to do more outside business in Austin than in the Lawrence/KC area.

It sucks she's leaving, but there's definitely more to it than simply a change of scenery.

Aug 21, 2019 01:50 AM #75

@nuleafjhawk "I really do try hard to put myself in other’s shoes."

Lee Child (Jack Reacher books) had Jack telling a joke his older brother used to say, which was something like this:

Never criticize a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes. Then, when he gets mad, you will be a mile away and without shoes he won't be able to run after you anyway.

Aug 21, 2019 04:44 PM #76

@mayjay
Love, love, love Jack Reacher series. Can't wait for the new one coming Oct. 29th. I've read them all
