5 star guard announces for KU. Dad played for Self at Tulsa. Big time shooter, big time recruiting victory!

Welcome young man!

NBA talent. He was hovering in the 60-70 range before his PG skills took off.

Way to go Bill. You still got it.

Wonder if any higher ranked players would like to play with him?

Might not need any. We are technically at scholarship capacity right now.

But yeah we should probably assume Dotson is gone.

“I was able to talk to the AD surrounding the whole NCAA situation. He cleared it up pretty much, it’s not going to be perfect, but I trust the coaching staff and that they are going to do what’s right.”

He knows it's gonna be a bit rocky and he's still coming here. Hell yes.

This is great news in that other recruits are gonna see that the NCAA stuff doesn't deter real talent from coming here.

So
Is he considered a (gulp) OAD?

Nov 12, 2019 05:26 PM #19

Bill is the man when he's up against it. Last spring, this fall. He's incredible. You're too kind, @jayballer73! A little birdie told me it was "nearly wrapped up" about 3 weeks ago and never heard anything different until it was official this morning.

@Bosthawk a fringy OAD. If he goes supernova and scores 20+ PPG and shoots 45% from 3 then yeah. But I think 2 years a la Dotson is more likely as of now. Bring back Silvio and/or Ochai and we're loaded for bear again.

Nov 12, 2019 05:29 PM #20

@Bosthawk I am committed during our "issues" with the NCAA not to complain/whine/wonder at all about any possible OAD recruiting. I won't. This is an incredible recruiting win. This is an incredibly impressive given the "issues."

Nov 12, 2019 05:30 PM #21

Bosthawk said:

Depends on who you ask. Some out there think he has great NBA potential. Some think he might have some growing pains stepping up to the next levels due to him not being an explosive athlete. Anytime you sign a 5 star player your expectation shouldn't be 4 years. The looming NOA could impact how long he stays as well.

Nov 12, 2019 05:31 PM #22

@FarmerJayhawk Imagine if only Dotson goes.

Would be a great roster to play 4 out.

Guards/Wings: Harris, Thompson, Garrett, Agbaji, Grant-Foster, Enaruna, Wilson, Braun

5s: Dave/Silvio/Mitch

Cryo-ice Deep Bench: Muscadin

Nov 12, 2019 05:34 PM #23

@FarmerJayhawk

I agree about the 2 year plan for Bryce. He does have great size if he ends up being more PG then CG. Regardless its a homerun piece to fit next to Garrett and Harris.

Nov 12, 2019 05:36 PM #24

@BShark would be similar to this year in that we could match up with absolutely anyone.
Big lineup: Thompson, Garrett, Agbaji, Silvio, McCormack
Small: Thompson, Garrett, Agbaji, Enaruna, Silvio
Death: Harris, Thompson, Agbaji, Garrett, Enaruna

Yeah, the talk with Long might have convinced him this process won't even effect next year if the appeals and lawsuits drag it out for years. I usually hate delay tactics in litigation, but after the NCAA inexplicably screwed us and the kids over with their refusal to rule in a reasonable time on Diallo, Billy, and SDS (twice), I have no qualms about cheering on every possible strategy to extend it out until the NCAA staff dies of old age.

I give you that... It is his skillset though that makes me feel otherwise. He can bring a changeup coming off the bench at both the 5 and 4.

I'm pretty excited about our frontcourt future, no doubt. I like Braun, Enaruna and Muscadin alot, their ability (Enaruna is only going to get better) to run and handle, stretch the floor. It is all good in Bill Land. A damn shame about Wilson, it will be interesting to see what his role might be come next year.

Nov 12, 2019 07:10 PM #39

I like this kid already.

Nov 12, 2019 07:12 PM #40

@Marco I think Wilson's best, and likely primary role is as a 4 under Bill. Marcus/Perry type but will likely take more threes than those two. From what we've seen I just don't think he is a guard/wing. Probably won't have the handles to be that at KU.

Oh and totally agree on Enaruna. His potential is enormous.

I see the same in Wilson, a stout guy without much handle who can rebound and shoot if open, but has trouble getting open if the ball is in his hands.

There is some more too. Bryce confirmed that he doesn't care if KU gets a postseason ban, he will still be a Jayhawk and “I would be hurt,” Bryce added, “but I’ll still give my all every game.”

Bryce hopes he has made it so other players will be willing to look at Kansas differently now that he’s taken the chance. “I’m sure we have some more spots that can be filled,” he said, “and I love to fill them with some great players.”

Basically, he is ALL JAYHAWK. I'm excited for him and the team.

Sad time in sports journalism.

@mayjay Print journalism is dying in favor of digital. Sucks in my humble opinion. In some ways it’s like going back to the Stone Age - no recorded history. When digital articles go away there’s no bringing them back. Also many (most?) in their haste to stay current don’t bother archiving the old info just updating and that old info and the snapshot in time it provided is gone. Poof

I just saw this post. Absolutely agree. I started reading the sports page every morning when I was five years old. Boxscores where heaven -- loved MLB and NBA boxes. Nothing like it. I gave up the paper six months ago because it was a joke. Hardly anything in print and "see online edition" all the time. Can't stand looking at my phone or a computer to read a newpaper.

Something to be said for printed papers and microfishe. Sometimes perfection precedes progress.

Bryce Thompson played against Caleb Love's (5 star UNC bound) team over the holiday week. I believe Caleb's team got the narrow victory but Thompson showed his tremendous shooting touch from the perimeter cashing in several 3's with Love guarding him as well are 3-4 others in the game. I saw not only Thompson's highlight video but the full video of both teams. Caleb Love is really good as well and its unfortunate he goes to Roy but he definitely looks like a fit there athletically and showed off a nice perimeter shot as well.

Things to be excited about with this guy on offense next season.

Step back 3 pointer is a signature move of his. Quick release.

Midrange game- Lost art but can be useful and effective when needed.

Ball-handler with size and gets in the paint. Will finish above the rim in transition, on cuts to the basket or around the rim in general.

Cannot leave him wide open, deadly.

@BShark man we need a shooter like that

Hopefully we get 2 seasons of him. If he stayed 4 yrs he would go down as one of the best shooters we have had. He is that good of a scorer

Lack of elite athleticism is massive here. If he was even Marc G athletically he would be a oad lock.

True. 3 seasons from him would be great! Not a bigtime athlete, but shooters such as JJ Reddick have carved out nice careers for themselves.

Bryce was a major snub for the Jordan Brand game. Shocked (except not)

They don't even try to hide their bias against kids who sign sign with Adidas schools

Pretty pathetic, actually. If the NCAA doesn't sniff a problem here they are even dumber and more corrupt than what I had previously thought.

Brings a serious microscope to the whole charade.

Seems like a lot of caution is being put out there in regards to Thompson right now. Should be good eventually though.

Adapting to the more physical college game was always a question with Bryce. Shoot, we could easily see Braun over Bryce for awhile in the non-con.
