Shaka vs Boynton vs Prohm Cage Match
Jan 08, 2020 10:55 PM #1

3 coaches enter with equal rosters, only one makes it out. Who ya got?

Things to consider

Shaka grotesquely underperforming with the talent he pulls in at UT.

Prohm had some good years with Hoiberg's players. Has an eye for talent but last year took a roster that Beard or Self would have won the league with and managed FIFTH place.

Boynton is about to be 0-3 in regards to the NCAAT. This year they certainly have a roster that could make it.

I'm takin Boynton. - gonna have a good group next year. - Think Likely is back, got the # 2 recruit coming in - got some really good pieces. - I actually like him

Jan 09, 2020 12:41 AM #3

If you are talking about surviving this year I will say Boyton because of Cade. Long term I think I would say him as well.

Jan 09, 2020 12:44 AM #4

I think Boynton as well, short term he gets Cade on campus. Long term they seem to have low expectations. I'm surprised they have struggled recently.

Prohm seems to be upsetting a fan base otherwise I would pick him because he can win big games

Oh no, sorry. This is a hypothetical where all three have the same roster, who would do the best.

Agree with you Boynton will not be fired.

Jan 09, 2020 01:19 AM #6

I'll take Boynton as well. Surprised everyone feels the same way. I'm going by how he coached his first year there with a not great team.

Jan 09, 2020 03:27 AM #7

Fun stat for Prohm I just saw...

9-16 in game decided by 3 points or less.

Jan 09, 2020 03:29 AM #8

Haliburton, they weren't really doing much, my shots just weren't falling, no respect!🏆

Jan 09, 2020 03:29 AM #9

@Crimsonorblue22 what a chode

He only took 7 shots. What a sham

Jan 09, 2020 02:42 PM #11

I was not impressed at all with Haliburton. After seeing him as a top 10 pick and even a top 5 pick on some mocks I was expecting a lot more. Maybe he let all of the scouts in the building get to his head, but other than a few great passes he didn't affect the game much.

Jan 09, 2020 02:59 PM #12

@Woodrow his wrist didn't look bad on his shot, but he did have an air ball. Love the pocket passes though! Self thinks and I agree, his wrist must be hurt, he did sit out.

Jan 09, 2020 03:00 PM #13

Also, I can't tell how well he plays D.

Jan 09, 2020 04:16 PM #14

@Woodrow He had to be hurt. Every time I have seen him play he has been great.

Jan 09, 2020 04:28 PM #15

@Hawk8086 Did they talk about a possible injury with him? He had a triple double on Saturday so not sure how hurt he could have been.

Jan 09, 2020 04:57 PM #16

He sat out that loss against Florida A and M. The worst loss in the big 12 ever🤣. Maybe he's a head case.

he is really goo. Although from the way the Iowa State fans were talking on their boards no one said a peep about him possibly being hurt. - -It was just more like him failing to stepup. - He talked about how the final 8 minutes plus of the 1st half how KU really took it to them

Surprisingly they're fans was giving KU a lot of props , nothing in a negative way at all. - But what can you say when you just got took to the wood shed

Jan 09, 2020 05:19 PM #18

Haliburton was terrific against TCU over the weekend. I know it was TCU, I've watched about 4-5 others games and he was as good as advertised. That team is spiraling and KU took him out of his game in the first half and at that point we had already demoralized them to a 20 pt lead. I really don't think that group likes playing with each other and I think Prohm has lost the locker room.

Marcus the glove Garrett.

Jan 09, 2020 05:23 PM #20

@BShark

He's an elite defender. I stopped questioning whether that was actually the case about 6-7 games ago.

Jan 09, 2020 05:27 PM #21

@BeddieKU23 Improving the defense around him as had a huge trickle down effect too. It's the reason Agbaji plays so much because even when he is off offensively he is bringing it on D which contributes to this elite team defense.

Jan 09, 2020 05:37 PM #22

Isu has always had team chemistry problems. They had fist fights last year. Somebody got their foot shut in a door. Some questionable characters, but don't think so much that is the problem this yr.

Jan 09, 2020 05:42 PM #23

@Crimsonorblue22 KU was about that bad last year. Much tighter group this year. Don't know how much you follow on social media but it is even more apparent based on instagram posts.

Jan 09, 2020 06:23 PM #24

@BShark Agbaji isn't getting the same recognition defensively but he is quickly approaching lock down level as well. He is really good at using his body and athleticism to guard players 1-4. I don't get nervous when he ends up on a big or if a play-making guard is trying to go to work on him. He's really good off the ball and according to some stuff I've been reading from Jesse, seems to get the team defense concepts well and is playing to scouting reports! I've noticed when MG comes out OA usually takes the other team's best player and sometimes even with MG on the floor.

Jan 09, 2020 06:31 PM #25

@benshawks08 I'm just a humble board rat but I've been very impressed with Ochai's defense as well.

Doke, Dot, Marcus and Agbaji are all tremendous defensively and Braun now that he appears to be putting it together could join that group. He has the athletic and mental tools to do it. I was a bit worried about his speed coming in, but that no longer concerns me.

Tristan has had a large statistical impact on D while being clueless, if he ever does totally figure it out he could be amazing. His bigger issue is offense though, where he looks lost.

David is passable on D for a 5 and Moss at least TRIES (cough, Q, cough).

Put it all together and this team is just suffocating.

Jan 09, 2020 07:02 PM #26

When I had those good seats against CO, the first half D, w/Moss, was awesome to see up close. Poor crims doesn't get to go now! 🐣🐤

Shaka got a road win at Oklahoma St last night- Boynton is now 0-4 in conference play.

Jan 16, 2020 05:36 PM #31

Shaka is as good as gone, Boynton and Prohm will survive this season.

Jan 17, 2020 12:33 AM #32

I’d say Boyton is the lesser coach, but Shaka is on the shortest leash.

YA I've seen off they're boards before . Lots of talk about how they're either building a new facility or remodel the one they're in now and lots of fans saying there is no way they are going to have Smart leading them when they do.

They say that he is doing just enough where the Admin won't fire him , but when they build this he won't be welcome

Jan 17, 2020 02:32 AM #34

Shaka has at least one more year. UT's new arena doesn't open until 2022-23.

wasn't sure when it was opening for sure. Just remembered seeing something about a new arena and they're fans saying they didn't want Shaka running the program once it was

Jan 18, 2020 02:53 AM #36

@jayballer73 I thought they already decided to build a new one for next season, I’m not up to date on Texas athletics lol. I wouldn’t want to be a basketball coach in Texas. They had the best college player I’ve ever seen in KD and couldn’t sell out!

They will never buy in full to Basketball. To invested to their beloved football program , they are just NOT a Basketball School. - - I actually am kind of surprised at some of the recruits they have gotten. - I as a recruit would not get jacked up playing in front of a little over half to three quarter arena all the time.

Texas Hawk say they're new arena isn't opening till 22-23 I didn't know when , All I knew was that they were going to have a new one soon.

Did Shaka beat Bill?

Jan 18, 2020 10:44 PM #40

@BShark you are all about this Hell na song lol. What is Shaka now? 2-10 vs Self lol

Jan 19, 2020 03:57 AM #41

One of those wins by Shaka was the only one that really mattered.

Jan 19, 2020 05:38 AM #42

@HighEliteMajor yeah, it sucked! Probably won't help him keep his job.

Jan 19, 2020 10:40 AM #43

@Crimsonorblue22 It’s the one that got him that job. And yea, he’s toast.

Jan 19, 2020 03:15 PM #44

Pretty amazing respect KU/Bill has when beating him once gives another man a job for a half a decade.

Jan 20, 2020 02:24 AM #45

@dylans Of course, it had nothing to do with Self. It was getting VCU to the FF.

Member Shaka hanging his hat on one win in it?

Yeah, I member that.

Jan 20, 2020 04:18 AM #47

I like shakas call on doke, traveling, he got waaaaaay to excited! Jeez! But wait, instant replay showed, no walk! Sure hope he got to see that!

Jan 20, 2020 01:42 PM #48

@BShark I think (this year's record aside) that I would take Prohm over the other two.

Feb 15, 2020 07:53 PM #49

mmmmmmm

Feb 15, 2020 07:57 PM #50

Texas getting beat by isu? Go osu!

Feb 15, 2020 08:02 PM #51

@BShark who's osu's ast coach that use to be w/us and was s. Illinois ? Maybe

Feb 15, 2020 08:03 PM #52

Barry?

Feb 15, 2020 08:06 PM #53

Feb 15, 2020 08:06 PM #54

I don't trust OSU to close this out

Feb 15, 2020 08:09 PM #55

Yep Oklahoma st is trash

Feb 15, 2020 08:10 PM #56

Wow clarke. LOL

Feb 15, 2020 08:11 PM #57

Feb 15, 2020 08:12 PM #58

Feb 15, 2020 08:12 PM #59

Smart play. Something self wouldn't do

Feb 15, 2020 08:13 PM #60

Edwards his jr and sr years is gonna be a problem

Feb 15, 2020 08:13 PM #61

We would have already won it

Feb 15, 2020 08:14 PM #62

EMPEROR of basketball Bill Self replacement Beard 7-5 in the league. You hate to see it, my coach would never etc...

Feb 15, 2020 08:14 PM #63

Marcus would've stole it and dot probably made some throws

Feb 15, 2020 08:17 PM #64

@BShark they are doing fairly decent for losing everyone off of a national title game appearance.

Feb 15, 2020 08:18 PM #65

@kjayhawks no excuses, the standard is excellence. They have dudes.

Feb 15, 2020 08:20 PM #66

@BShark they still have March to reach excellence lol

Feb 15, 2020 08:21 PM #67

Has Bill ever started 16-9 at KU?

I'm cantankerous today.

Feb 15, 2020 08:29 PM #68

@BShark our record last season wasn’t much better at this point or in 2006. Beard is a good coach, don’t think anyone is saying he’s better than Self at this point. I don’t think Tech has near the horses we have at this point. They are super young, younger than we were a year ago.

Feb 15, 2020 08:29 PM #69

@kjayhawks I could think of one.

Feb 16, 2020 03:03 AM #72

@jayballer73 I don't think they would can him with Cade Cunningham on the way. That win sure does help though.

Feb 16, 2020 03:14 AM #73

@BShark agreed Ok St currently has a top 10 class with Cade being #1. KSUs rating @ 21 maybe what saves Weber’s seat from catching ablaze. It will interesting to see if they can keep those guys.

Feb 16, 2020 03:31 AM #74

@kjayhawks Weber got a lifetime contract for finishing ahead of us once. Doesn't matter how it happened.

Their class is good for KSU. Still funny as hell that we got the big we wanted out of the two we were both looking at in Gethro and Bradford. Love that purple dorks counter Bradford as a win when he never had a KU offer. I don't think either are more than a bench piece on a good team and that's the upside view.

Feb 16, 2020 05:28 AM #75

Gosh I remember when Shaka went to Texas and Texas was thinking they finally brought in the answer to beat us. Never seen a school hire someone just because they think he can beat one school... but that is what I felt about that hire. I know I felt confident time would straighten the score with Shaka... and I was right. I was actually hoping he would bring us a real challenge every year because that is how we become better... by being challenged. Texas was a bigger threat with Barnes, and with Barnes Texas had one of the classiest guys in D1.

Absolutely. One of the best I've seen

Feb 17, 2020 07:01 AM #84

@BeddieKU23

Love it! I noticed his hand is out... just like he plays defense... with his hands out ready to slap and steal balls.

I don't see Marcus' recent uptick as a temporary benefit. I believe he has made a breakthrough in his game. He's been able to string along plenty of games with relatively good health. That has lead to him realizing more he can do. I'm even optimistic he will continue to shoot better because he is clearly showing more confidence in his game. He's playing without overthinking... just feeling the game and reacting quickly off his reflexes. Between him and Doke we may end up with the best defensive team ever under Self!

Feb 17, 2020 11:32 AM #85

@drgnslayr

I believe after this past week Marcus will be DPOY.

The stats say Udoka is the better defender due to how much he changes shooting %'s at the rim and how dominant the defense is with him on the floor but the eye test tells you Marcus is a bad, bad man and just does a lot of things that can't be put on paper. Those 3 straight steals against West Virginia were game breakers. The national media has caught on finally they are touting him as the premiere defender
