They do have shooters I'll give them that. Do we take the beating they took Friday at home at face value? If we do then beating baylor on the road would seem even more improbable
Who's Cunningham lol.
Outside of Evans- Oklahoma St is at a major disadvantage against Baylor. We'll see how this one goes..
Kind of a slow week by the looks of it. I'm not expecting any major upsets.
Tuesday
K-State vs KU- Beat down coming purple cats way.
Oklahoma vs TCU- One of these will be 0-2 in conference
West Virginia vs Texas Tech- The way Tech fell apart against Iowa St late makes it seem impossible that they can win but it is a home game. Coincidental or not ISU came back after applying token pressure to Tech on out of bounds plays and Tech's guy's couldn't handle it. I expect they will struggle against WVU.
Wednesday
Oklahoma St vs Texas- Good opportunity for Ok-St to get a win here.
Iowa St vs Baylor- Usually a good game. ISU doesn't have one post player to touch Baylor's tree's. Big mismatch. ISU's only hope is to shoot lights out from 3
Saturday games
Tech vs KU- Sorry Tech
TCU vs West Virginia- Interesting game but hard to see West Virginia losing.
Oklahoma vs K-St- K-St probably wins here after its Tuesday beatdown.
Ok. St vs Baylor- Not likely to be a close game
Texas vs ISU- Usually a good game, Texas just doesn't have the team to make it so this year.
Any thoughts? Upset chances across the league? I will say this if Tech is able to pull the upset against West Virginia that would give KU its 1st leg up
They are saying 4 weeks he'll be back. Probably puts him in line to coach against UNC at home Feb 9th.
Duke could have 3 more losses before he returns. @FSU, @Louisville, @Notre Dame. Hard to see any of their next 5 home foe's beating them as they are all bottom half ACC teams. @ Wake could be intriguing but obviously they would need a career game to beat them.
I also watched the Nova/Creighton game. They executed well on double teams and use the pump-fake better than any team in the country (Jenkins lives by it). They rely so much on Josh Hart heroics that at some point he's bound to be human.
I did think the outcome was decided by 2 plays on both sides when it was a 1 possession game. Hart made a turnaround jumper where he just ran into a defender and made enough space to jump over him, and a Brunson jumper that was made, a highly contested shot as well.
On the other end Creighton shot 3's instead of looking to get to the hoop and our old nemesis Marcus Foster was up to his old ways again clanking outside shots. I thought Creighton's decision making cost them the chance of the upset as their defense played well for most of this contest.
Nova looks like a well-oiled machine again. Hard to notice much of a drop off from their championship squad outside of a big man that scores.
Good points! Your right Bragg is a better fit for a 3 out 2 in scheme. The way this season is going I really like playing 4 guards though and with the right players for next year I hope we continue with it. Bragg is not a 5 but he's trying out there since he's been back. Bragg came to KU a beanpole and while he added good weight to his frame he's still adjusting. Not sure he wants to be a strictly in the post player. I do think the staff is slowly getting him to change what he is into what they want for this years team. I think it will only help him down the road
I think the staff is still trying to unlock his "toughness". We're seeing flashes recently
I lurk there as well. It is interesting that he wanted to tranfer close to home- then the KU thing came along and he ended up here. So wonder if his intentions to be close to home popped up again..
I remember it being 10-12 point game with 3-4 minutes left, not sure what happened to make it so close? Did K-St call off the dogs? Both teams are offensively challenged and we've talked about this before K-St is down to what 6 D-1 players. That game was never going to be pretty they only get jazzed for one game a year anyway
Would be interesting to know how that person knows this for sure. Lots of debby downers on that site. The "darkside" is strong with them.
I agree he's usually high on the Hawks, but lumping in Svi with under-performing is a bit much.
Very True it is an adjustment still . I do want to note that Doke was only playing on average 12 minutes a game because of foul trouble, game flow etc. If he was playing 25 minutes a game his impact would be felt even more.
I believe Jackson's foul trouble impacted a lot of our defense in the TCU game. Jackson's leading the team in blocks with Doke out, 2nd in steals and his versatility to guard the post was felt on rotations where a guard had to pick up a big ( it seemed Svi struggled when put in that situation). It's certainly a key to minimize Jackson's fouls over a course of a game.
Seth Davis apparently hasn't been watching Svi the past month. SMH at this supposed know-it-all's
Nice post by the way.
Interesting numbers. The #'s definitely sing a different song to what we've seen. Although I do think in the TCU game he was aggressive rebounding and showed life out there. 23 rebounds since his 1 game suspension is promising and that is his meal ticket to getting consistent minutes- maybe even a few more then the 16 he's getting currently.
I still think he's the odd man in the rotation that doesn't know where to get his offense. He's got the mid-range shot but that hasn't been a focal point of his role. He's struggled handling the ball in the post or holding onto 50/50 balls. We have seen signs though recently. We've yet to see him have a breakout game or put together a stretch of games that say "Carlton is back", Will be interesting to see if there is a shift in how we view him come March. We certainly need him performing at a high level.
Thank you for that additional piece of info. Forgot about that. So consumed in this years squad we tend to forget the details of even last years season.
Good point, it will be interesting to see if any mid-season addition(s) either Copeland (a big) or Cunliffe a SG/SF type will give this team more bodies to use in practice. I can't imagine with so few bodies this year that practices will be as long as normal.
Lucas play of late is encouraging to fill that "Ochefu" role. 39 points, 45 rebounds last 4. Bragg 14 points 23 rebounds last 3. We'll see how this progresses with known roles
Your right defense is an issue for most teams right now with the way the game is called. I do think for the type of players we have this game showed how much they are underachieving as a unit on defense. Self is on them- "we don't guard" to the media is his way of getting his message across to them.
That's how I saw it as well. When they couldn't find sufficient evidence to hold back his academics while wasting a lot of time in the process they fell back on his handler.
Self and KU were clearly upset about the wasted time and the lack of communication. I bet if you got Self off the record talking about this situation there would be some things said that the NCAA would not want repeated.
Funny how once Diallo lawyer-ed up the process moved on quicker. There is no telling how many games the kid would have missed otherwise
Very bizarre situation with Maxwell. A lot of people thought from the beginning that Evan wasn't a KU caliber player and would never play a significant role on the team. Self took a shot on him needing a big body. Maybe they mutually saw that he wasn't going to cut it here and decided to "move on".
I know KU has its eyes on 2 mid-season transfers which could be playing a part here. Or giving itself 1 more scholarship for the spring when there might be some better immediate talent to go after. This spring is looking like it will be a critical time period for next years team
It's going to take a lot more average games from Devonte for him to come back in my opinion. There is so much basketball left to see how things go.
If Svi continues to play like he is he'll get drafted-maybe one of those 1st round and stash prospects that teams seem to covet nowadays. He's still only 19 and that helps him.
Bragg will be back, so will Vick. If we returned 1 of Graham & Svi that would significantly upgrade next years team.
Agreed, I think Tatum is the issue for Duke right now. Skilled, will be a NBA player but I don't see team player in him at all. Actually after watching their last 3 games I don't see much "team" in them. Lots of chiefs, no indians
Besides the start of the game which was some of the worst basketball we've played this year, I thought we had control of the game even though the score was relatively close throughout.
I don't think we played great as a team but we got some great individual efforts. Landen rebounding and getting some close-in buckets, Svi & Vick making timely outside shots and Frank being Frank Mason led us to escape with a win. Even Bragg deserves a kudos for 9 rebounds in just 16 minutes, he took some balls away from guys and showed some grit for the first time.
This was all done without arguably our best player who pulled a complete no-show last night. Should we be concerned Josh will do this again? We should be concerned, he's got a bit of emotional temper he needs to learn to channel. The foul call was bogus but the immediate reaction is selfish and he needs to think of his team. He cannot continue to take himself out of the game with stupid fouls. I know he's competitive, aggressive and he's trying but the fouls are just stupid, there's nothing else to say. Stay on the court and you get 18-20 a night, foul people and you get what you deserve. I'm sure he'll take this game as a good teaching moment as I'm sure Self will.
Lots of good practice film.
Obviously the biggest concern for this team is our defense. And most of it was due to our perimeter players not containing dribble penetration. We had some really poor rotations as well that left Big Whitey beanpole wide open all night. Whatever his career night didn't win them the game. TCU is improved, they have depth and guys who can make plays which is something they have lacked for many years. I still think KU played its B- game and walked away with a win!
Where's Devonte Graham's shooting? If it wasn't for his other perimeter mates coming through I thought he was terrible. I might be on him a little too much but we should be seeing the best version of DG and we aren't right now. I'm sure it will pass but what makes this team so deadly is its 1-2 punch with DG/Frank and we can't afford too many 3-14 shooting nights.
Now we get the 2 game home-stand and a chance to get to 3-0.
another good one.

can you get kenrich williams hair on the way:stuck_out_tongue:

@BeddieKU23 Really, TCU is playing very well. The refs put Josh on the bench.
He put himself there. And it's not like he was playing well he missed a 2 footer Airball style

@BeddieKU23 Expect that most conference road games will be like this one this year...
True but maybe our best player won't be sitting on the bench for 30+ minutes
And we have Jackson to blame for that mess
Boy this game is too close for comfort
@BShark said:
Fans booing of course but that was actually a good call.
U could say that's the best one they have made tonight
Big already in bonus and tcu is tired and fouling

Well, it's actually going well so far.
Yeah they actually look like they got in Mccarthy hall a few times
Free throws gonna decide this one...
Deserves it can't take yourself out of the game like that. We are basically playing 6 guys until the final 4 minutes of the game now
How
How do u miss that graham

Agree but it was 2 separate technicals
Thanks Josh for blowing the momentum of the game
