Tech killing Iowa St at Ames. 28-14 with 3 to go in the half. No lead is safe in Ames so I would bet State makes a run in the 2nd half but Tech is clearly playing like the better team.

And West Virginia killed Oklahoma St

@wissox

Interesting, he's just a sophomore so I'm sure he'll be the guy on his team next year when his brother is gone. Really interested in this guy's development as there is talk he'll be a Mcdonald's All American 5 star type by the time his senior year comes around.

KU only a 4.5 point favorite against TCU • Dec 30, 2016 05:51 PM

@Kcmatt7

It was 1 year and it was a cosmic upset. Maybe that one game is playing into this line but I'm shocked it's this close.

Either Vegas believes in TCU's inflated 11-1 record and their new coach or they believe KU will not play its A game on the road.

TCU has played KU tough the last few years but its hard to read into it consistently. Last year we beat TCU by 19 on the road, the year before 3. A few other games at Allen within 10 points. A 5 point win in Big-12 tourney play.

I expect us to win by more then the line-somewhere in the 7-10 pts area

Consistency: Josh vs Perry • Dec 30, 2016 05:45 PM

@justanotherfan

Great post by the way.

When comparing Josh to Andrew we have to consider that Josh is a full year older then Wiggins. A year more of maturity makes a difference. I agreed back in the summer when you did that comparison of the two and how much different they are physically. Josh has a NBA ready body now, Andrew still looks like he's filling in to his 3 years into his NBA career.

I wonder if Josh is able to maintain more weight then Andrew is. Josh put on 15-20 pounds this summer and so far its paying off. I wonder if that was done so that Josh could play the 4 in this lineup.

Imagine if Self had tried to play Wiggins in the block more, a place where Wiggins is doing damage in the NBA now.

KU only a 4.5 point favorite against TCU • Dec 30, 2016 03:45 PM

Do the money people have this right?

I expect a tough game, low scoring, margin for error should be low unless we shoot the heck out of the ball. Still seems the spread is low.

Thoughts?

@wissox

How did Markese look to you?

Mitch is the Key? • Dec 30, 2016 12:40 AM

@DoubleDD

I did get a chance to read it. I have high hopes for Lightfoot but I also know his best basketball is far away, meaning not this season. We will play Jackson & Svi in that 4 spot as much as game flow and fouls will let us. If Lightfoot did step up he would give us another great option to go to when we need to steal some minutes. Maybe he'll help us over the next few months then I'm thinking he will. Sometimes all it takes is an opportunity. He got 6 minutes against UNLV, we'll see how many he gets on the road against a team with size like TCU has.

I also like Coleby, the Georgia game showed that he can play against Power 5 talent. I'm hoping these last few weeks have allowed him to get healthier if that is possible. Your right, he's probably not going to be 100% until next fall. Whatever we can get out of him this season is a bonus

Grayson Allen Trippin' (to the bench) • Dec 29, 2016 11:01 PM

@ralster

He only suspended him after it was apparent he had no other option. I cannot assume but I'm sure the ACC and Duke felt the pressure to finally make the punishment stick this time.

He didn't sit him the 2nd half of the game in which he committed the trip which to me said all I needed to know about Coach K. He saw the play, it was right in front of his bench. He saw the tirade that Allen put on after on the bench, right in front of him again. Inexcusable from player and Coach in that situation.

How much of Allen's issues are directly related to Coach K's antics as a coach? I would say they are closely tied together. I respect Coach K, amazing coach but the suspension was 1/2 of a game and a day late. Duke and the ACC knew the media was coming after them full throttle and that's why the suspension ultimately happened.

Mitch is the Key? • Dec 29, 2016 10:50 PM

@DoubleDD

We should hope that get some good minutes out of Mitch whenever his number is called.

How many good minutes we get out of him is unknown?

Mitch has yet to really play because Self doesn't trust him to not make mistakes. He said this much this week. Coleby if healthy would probably be the 3rd big because of his experience edge. If we can get 5-8 minutes a game from both these guys and their minutes are productive, I say that's a win-win for everyone.

Mitch is the Key? • Dec 29, 2016 08:12 PM

Mitch is the 9th most important person on this years team. 10 if we include Doke who's now out.

The key in March will be seeing just how good Josh Jackson is on the big stage. If he's the guy we've all seen so far he's the key to the season.

Virginia vs Louisville • Dec 29, 2016 05:16 PM

Watched a lot of basketball last night. Here are some observations.

Started with the Florida St-Wake Forest. What a game this was for 35 minutes. Back and forth game, Danny's team looked poised to get a big victory and then the wheels fell off. I think it was a 15-0 run in about 2 minutes that just blew the game in FSU's favor. FSU is ranked and rightfully so. Big, Athletic, chalk full of Top 100 kids, Dwayne Bacon is no joke. Jonathan Isaac looks like the prototypical OAD. Crawford of Wake is like Frank Mason, bulldog- takes ill advised shots sometimes but is a player. Their leading scorer Collins- didn't show up last night which hurt them. FSU can finish in the top 4 in ACC play if they put more consistent effort together and play defense. Hamilton is known for his defense but this squad doesn't play any. FSU a sneaky team right now.

Then I watched a slew of games -Virginia-Louisville which was a non contest for most of the game before Louisville decided to play at the end but ran out of time. Caught the last 5 minutes of the Nova-Depaul game. Nova definitely took the night off, but Josh Hart was stellar when it mattered driving to the hoop and getting to the line. Watched Creighton put on an offensive show, look out for this team. All 5 starters can blitz you. The game against Nova coming up is going to be huge. When I saw the Indiana/Nebraska game close I switched to that and watched Indiana fall apart late. Lots of missed FT's from key guys, especially Thomas Bryant. Indiana was playing some guys that didn't play against KU, wondering if they have injuries. Morgan looked like he sustained a horrible shoulder injury on a play the Nebraska guy was called for a flagrant foul. Obvious call. I'm shocked Nebraska won in Assembly Hall because Nebraska is not any good. The freshman Roby made some big plays.

Then the big nightcap game with UCLA/Oregon. Oregon came to play in the first half exposing what most already know about UCLA. They play optional defense. Sometimes you don't even know if they are trying. Total offensive team. Again for big parts of the game their offense is the best in the country. They score fast, efficiently and put so much pressure on defenses. Lonzo Ball was largely absent for the 1st half and it wasn't until Oregon went cold that Ball's talent started to show. I thought Oregon was done but then they fought back and an inexcusable miss by their best FT shooter Alford gave Brooks that last second opportunity for the win. What a big time player Brooks is. Oregon is starting to come around but this was a game I thought they would play with emotion because of it being played at home and UCLA being undefeated. On the road I'm not sure Oregon will be the same team.

Good night full of hoops!

Virginia vs Louisville • Dec 29, 2016 04:33 PM

@drgnslayr

I think we got a few of those x factor types. If we take Self's word that Josh Jackson still has another level to get to we may see him provide that type of effort. We know he can do it, we've never had a OAD like him before

Virginia vs Louisville • Dec 29, 2016 04:22 PM

Josh Hart showing why he will be POY if he continues what he's doing. Willed them to a win at the end

VOTE FOR FRANK • Dec 28, 2016 11:05 PM

Looks like a Iowa St fan voted 479 times in a row. wow.

Fultz, great NBA prospect- can't be the best PG when your team sucks

@Texas-Hawk-10

Both Tech & OSU are good enough to win. The question is can OSU not turn the ball over and can Tech really win Ames

@BShark

I think WVU will win as well. But if Gallagher Iba is full and rocking and they come to play they have the talent to win. WV has benefited from a cupcake schedule besides 1 game. Road wins are tough to get.. We'll certainly see

Predicting friday's games

OSU over West Virginia

Iowa St over Tech

Baylor over Oklahoma

K-State over Texas

KU over TCU

West Virginia- Oklahoma St is reportedly sold out. Could be a big upset for OSU right out of the gate.

I just don't think that West Virginia is that talented.

No Williams in the post, no paige.

They do have tons of depth which has helped them so far.

We will see how far their style of play gets them. I expect the narrative on this team to change soon

Bill RE: Next Season • Dec 27, 2016 03:12 PM

Former Georgetown forward Isaac Copeland, an AAU and prep school teammate of Kansas guard Devonté Graham, has Kansas on his list of possible transfer destinations.

Copeland, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound junior who recently announced plans to leave the Big East school, has a list of KU, Arizona, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Illinois, North Carolina State, Nebraska, Texas, and UConn, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports and fanragsports.com.

Bill RE: Next Season • Dec 24, 2016 07:36 PM

Sima ended up at Oklahoma St..

Also Cunliffe visits Georgetown before his KU visit. And reportedly Seattle is involved, can't imagine really in it.. Hopefully he don't commit to Georgetown before his visit

Bill RE: Next Season • Dec 24, 2016 05:36 PM

@BShark

Good points! Gabriel is certainly versatile to guard multiple positions so there is some chance he could be a long 3, especially if his jump-shot was falling consistently. I'm thinking either Washington or Vanderbilt will be a 3 because they both are so athletic and can play inside/out.

I don't think Cal is nearly done recruiting. New names will emerge, some kids will back out of commitments after coaching changes etc. KU and UK will most likely be after any hot name that emerges this spring.

Bill RE: Next Season • Dec 24, 2016 03:58 PM

@BShark

Gabriel isn't going anywhere in my opinion. He just needs time to develop, when he puts it all together he will be a tantalizing hybrid forward type. Look for him to be a monster next year.

I agree on Wynyard and I think Humphries is a transfer candidate as well. I think Cal would rather role with his 3 freshman + Jones & Gabriel. Funny that they have stockpiled bigs when they are likely to lose their entire backcourt again

Predicting next years rotation • Dec 23, 2016 07:35 PM

@Statmachine

We need guards and we should get another Post with size that can be developed.

I think there is a good chance Cunliffe joins for the 2nd semester if what's been written is true.

I don't see Graham coming back so PG becomes the biggest need.

Ideally I would love to see Trae Young & Cunliffe. Then its down to what happens with Svi. We could target another wing like MJ Walker. If Svi or Graham were to stay for next year this is another top 5 team potentially.

Tripper Allen at it again • Dec 23, 2016 04:00 PM

@justanotherfan

I've seen a lot of talk about a 3 game suspension. How convenient will it be if he misses just 3 games which would put him in line to return for road trips against FSU ( a team that has upset them in the past) & Louisville. If Duke really sends a message to Allen I would hope that he isn't brought back conveniently when the schedule gets tough.

Post Game Talk & Happy Holidays to All!! • Dec 23, 2016 03:56 PM

@REHawk

Very good point about the FT's. Mason was 4-10, yikes! And yes Bragg has not found sticky balm that works yet for those mits

Post Game Talk & Happy Holidays to All!! • Dec 23, 2016 03:07 PM

@Hawk8086

If we lose a game or 2 because of our posts then I'll worry. This isn't a perfect team but our 5 guards are on another level from the rest of the country. Self has embraced letting his guards do everything and the focus is off production from the posts. Bragg & Lucas are who they are. We'll get flashes. I just hope their rebounding is consistent because that's the biggest gift they can give us. 18 rebounds from those guys is a big deal.

We have some matchups coming up like Baylor or Kentucky that will present the biggest obstacles for our roster makeup. The rest of the Big-12 doesn't have a big that pisses in a pot.

Post Game Talk & Happy Holidays to All!! • Dec 23, 2016 03:01 PM

@BShark

Definitely we have a pecking order of sorts. Svi is fast approaching for 3rd though when he plays like he did last night.

I have no doubts this team will be focused for TCU. I don't think KU has ever lost a Big-12 opener. Is that correct?

Post Game Talk & Happy Holidays to All!! • Dec 23, 2016 12:07 PM

First off, I want to wish everyone on this board a Happy Holidays. This is a special place to visit and talk daily about KU and for that, I hope everyone gets to spend time with family and loved one's this upcoming weekend. You all make this place so much fun.

I know some may have missed the game last night due to the ridiculous cable packages that put this game on CBS sports. I was lucky I picked up the sports package just before Football Season rolled on and was able to see the game.

Short synopsis- 1st half -good, 2nd half -less than good.

UNLV is probably one of the 30 worst D-1 schools this year. Just don't have the talent or development to say otherwise. A team that was torn apart by departures, coaching changes etc. KU should have won by 30-40 points but we left the bright lights with a 71-53 win. A 22 point lead at half got scary close to becoming a before Holiday meltdown (we've had those in the past). Then Svi made some shots and made everything fine again. What a season Svi is having and I couldn't be happier for him.

I'll be honest I went to bed a bit angry with how the 2nd half unfolded. I thought the guys mailed it in for a good portion of the half. UNLV was getting good shots and made them. Energy level was down and some of our best players were not performing.

Today is a new day though and after reading and thinking things through, I'm not going to take much from this game. First true road experience, First game without Doke and finally guys looking forward to seeing their families made this game forgetful after halftime.

We have plenty of time to prepare for the Big-12 opener against TCU on the road. Traveling to UNLV gave some of our young guys (Jackson, Vick, Bragg) valuable experience for that game. Plenty of game film for Self to use in practices next week where the effort will have to pick up a good amount to leave TCU with a victory.

I don't think anyone should be too upset about the game if you have some doubts after last night. We can park this game in the "average" category and still left with a 18 point win.

Lucas & Bragg rebounded well. Their offense was forgetful though. Loved their efforts on the glass. Lucas set some hard screens last night, an underrated quality for him.

Jackson & Svi carried the offense. Dynamic kids at 6'8 they cannot be stopped if they are playing at a high level. Jackson does about 4-5 things a game that just jump off the chart. His effort level in the 1st half was awesome. Svi is continuing to evolve in the offense both Outside/Inside. If he to be aggressive to the hoop he makes this team dangerous in the absence of a real post presence.

Mason & Graham were disappointing, especially Devonte who didn't seem engaged in the game at all after the first minute. Mason looked banged up on at least 2 different plays. Come on Frank! Not going to worry about them but they definitely didn't bring their A game's last night. Mason did have 1 incredible left-handed layup on the break though. Amazes me how good he is at the rim sometimes.

Thoughts?

@betterfireE

“It wasn’t a play,” he said. “I think he was just banging on somebody and got his hand kind of caught in a shirt and somebody hit his hand in an awkward position.”

“No. Not at all,” said KU coach Bill Self after Thursday’s game when asked if he knew that at the time of the injury that Azubuike’s season could be in jeopardy. “We just knew he hurt his wrist. He finished practice. And then after practice (trainer) Bill (Cowgill) said we needed to get it looked at.... It’s in a bad spot and the MRI confirmed it was torn.”

This according to Self.
