3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 05:36 PM

As for Jones, I am just not interested. I like our perimeter players. Don't want to mess that up. Period.

--I can't believe I didn't think of it this way yet. Tharpe, Mason, Greene, White, Oubre....and maybe even production from Frankamp. That's a full house. Writings on the wall for me now.

Pro Jayhawks update • Nov 12, 2013 05:28 PM

This thread and those stats from guys we all love adds support to my belief that they must strike while the iron is hottest to maximize earnings. You just never know how long you can play for great pay.

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 05:21 PM

My opinion is that Russ Rob was a pure point.

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 05:12 PM

@wish and I wish my reply was juxtaposed with yours...I see a more likely scenario that Naa slides over to the 2 and Tyus runs the point. That would be best for egos (Tyus') but Naa knows all the plays already so,...back to square one.

But my gut feeling is that Tyus is headed to the East coast.

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 04:58 PM

@wishhawk. I would suggest that Jones sees Naadir and Quinn as equal competition, but knows that Coach Self is less likely to play freshmen over veterans. I think that's a misconception--Self doesn't care what class you are in--if you can defend and protect the ball you can play.

KU Sports - Nov 12: Game Day Coverage • Nov 12, 2013 04:10 PM

Just something I came across and wanted to share...

"He's got a chance to pickup where the Morris twins left off. He's a beast. He should be a double-double guy for Kansas as they have a bridge year into the future. This is not necessarily a rebuilding year for the Jayhawks, but they are CLEARLY not as strong as they have been over the last five, six, seven years."
--Fran Fraschilla 11/22/2011

We all know how that year went. So who knows? Even the professional pundits don't REALLY ever know. Let's have fun and see where this team can take us!

Rock Chalk!

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 03:51 PM

@JayDoc That quote surprised me too. In fact, I'm baffled. I've never heard of three recruits doing this at the same time. Even more intriguing, how does one announcing before the other one "ruin" all the hype? I'm trying to understand that logic.

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 03:50 PM

@bskeet Thanks for cleaning up my mess!

KU Sports - Nov 11: Duke Preview • Nov 11, 2013 02:18 PM

As I shared with my league of no-brethren at the KU Sports Dot Com website, I think this game is going to come down to who the best coach is and who shoots the highest free throw percentage. Both Coaches have figured out the new competitive advantage to the rule changes is to drive, drive, drive, and drive some more. (After Watching Kentucky dribble drive and dish all weekend, the new rules favor their style, imho). The quickest team with the best charity stripe % will likely put this one way.

If it came down to defense, the Hawks would win hands down, but defense has been removed from the game now. I can't believe I actually thought the other day during the Monroe game that for the first time in a very long time, I"m not enjoying the game anymore. For chrissakes, we didn't even get to see a patented 20-2 KU run, inspired by stellar defense because of the whistles. Long gone now are the days of my comparing basketball to an improvisational jazz piece.

It's very much controlled by the whistle, the tempo. But for how long, because you know what has been perfected is the two hour media window.

Side notes:
1. White should be playing for Selden with short term vision; but the ceiling is higher for Selden so lets keep sticking him out there. In the brave new world, that dude needs to start hitting FT's or he is a liability.
2. Below 75% FT rate is unacceptable. And that's for the team. Coach Self team historically shoot around 65-68% FT. I thought it was essential for KU to climb to 75%, but is it really a big deal? Every 10 FT's is another point. Will it make that big of a difference? We'll see.
3. I'm liking Wiggins, Greene, and Masons play making ability.
4. I'm loving White--he and Ellis look like the best guys on the floor right now from an effort and consistency stand point.
5. Ball reversal is too slow and sticky, and not getting back to the second side fast enough.
6. It's a complete load of crap that defenders are not allowed to maintain position by sliding their feet anymore. Any contact, regardless of who has the position has been whistled in favor of the offense.
7. Tarik isn't as good offensively as I had hoped, so Perry needs to touch the ball every trip down.
8. Coach Self tried playing fair and giving everybody an 'equal opportunity." Good for Frankamp and Greene to get minutes, but the lack of focus on the actual rotation is going to slow the development down. Im for getting the minutes out to see what people can do, but this is a consequence.

KU Sports - Oct 29: Wiggins Era Begins • Oct 29, 2013 01:05 PM

Hey guys I'm not an attorney so I could be wrong but I think if we pull over an article like this we need to site the source and the author, don't we?

Thanks for sharing it though... Just looking out.

Cliff Alexander Announcement • Oct 28, 2013 07:38 PM

Sure wish T Rob would think of Jayla when he is making really bad decisions like this. Who does she have left if he ends up in trouble, or worse.

@crimson--maybe a tiny bit more than usual. But I don't think Self changes, and his bread and butter has always been M2M D. I don't think he is going to adjust his core philosophy in the first year of the new rule system.

Frankamp is the no brainer when it comes to the redshirt option. Frankamps only OUTSTANDING positive attribute is his three point accuracy. But his lack of speed, quickness, and strength are too detrimental to the defensive oriented basketball philosophy of Coach Self. Even if Frankamp can shoot 5% better from behind the arc than Greene, he is slower than Greene and gives up 6 inches and 40 plus pounds. Knowing that Greene is only going to get very few minutes, I wish he could redshirt too. Not going to happen, though.

I realize this is hypocritical of me to suggest the reduction of threads whilst creating new one, however, I wanted to assure that we get this addressed.

First of all, I am very thankful that this site was set up and there is so much excitement surrounding it and the upcoming basketball season. Again, many thanks to all of the contributors for keeping this family alive.

That being said, the site is becoming very disheveled, in my humble opinion.

Here are my suggestions--let's please work together on this in a democratic fashion, if we can.

  1. Topics would be easier to follow if they list by date--in order from newest to oldest.
  2. Topics more than 5 days old, should be archived or in a different viewing screen.
  3. Limit of 'new' topics per day.

These are just suggestions that I think would help me keep up with whats going on around here. If I'm the only one in this situation, then tell me 'lock it up'. I'm just trying to assist improving this site as I see it.

Thanks again.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk! • Oct 28, 2013 01:58 PM

I'm still trying to learn which cable company I'm supposed to subscribe to to get these early games. I have dish and usually purchase full court. Anybody know if that will still get it done ?

@paris-don't get beat on the perimeter :)

Who are you? • Oct 25, 2013 02:16 PM

Or maybe Gary is just commenting on his own articles to generate more site visits?

KU and OSU • Oct 23, 2013 03:41 PM

totally meant Forte.....hehe, thanks for the editing capabilities above :)

KU and OSU • Oct 23, 2013 03:37 PM

When I think of Ok St, I ask myself this: Will it be a game if Markel goes off, if Markel is contained then it should be a victory. I see Markel as the motor to that team, although I know Smart has the highest draft potential, and Forte can go off at any time too.

@drgnslayr are you going to go to the game?

Jaybate, come home! • Oct 23, 2013 02:48 PM

I don't believe Jaybate is a professional journalist. I believe he is a retired scientist from a long line of scientists and researchers in his bloodline. His distinct ability is that he can read, comprehend, retain, and analyze with the best of them. To me, this spells "scientist with the belief of getting better and improving those lives around us as well." If I had to guess a career that the ol Jaybate had (as I"m most certain he and Oak are in their 60's now and retired, if not close to retired.) it would be a background in science, a love for reading, and the ability to be one of the best motivational speakers there is out there today. If I were to make one last assumption, is that Jaybate is quietly lurking waiting for the evolution of board rats to make a change at the individual level so the group can move forward and achieve our maximum greatness.

Just my random opinon though...

@REHawk--I was thinking the same thing. They are focusing on Wiggins already and Selden is going to be the one posterizing them when they aren't looking...

.....and it appears, for the most part that the fans on this site are tempering expectations, which is a good thing. I hope to not see anybody lashing out at this young man for 'under performing' this year. I think he is going to get some deserved constructive criticism over the next few months, but hopefully there is no idiotic hatred from jayhawkinnebr or soooobawls, for example :)

Big 12 Media Day • Oct 22, 2013 08:47 PM

Yes, it is a tiny nit.

Big 12 Media Day • Oct 22, 2013 08:14 PM

I agree with both of you guys. I wasn't really clear. I agree with Self that his team won't improve from the tape, but maybe, just maybe something else or some other part of the game that he didn't catch in real time might occur to him, and HE improves just a bit. That's what it's all about right? Finding a way to improve incrementally every day?

Big 12 Media Day • Oct 22, 2013 07:08 PM

The Bill Self Comment of Ridiculousness:

"Self says he never watches tape of his team's final game of the season after an NCAA Tournament loss. "Why watch it? You can't get it back. It's over," Self said. He said he's only watched one final game during his time at KU, but he joked that he watched that one a bunch."

This is one of the most annoying traits of Bill. Why watch any tape then, if that is your philosophy? Can't change the past, so we most certainly cannot improve the future....geeeeesh.

Runs good here for me and on 4g device.

I'm looking at sections in the second level and see tickets around 6-800. Trying to think of a good story/excuse to tell the wife as to why I'm suddenly going to Chicago three times this month, instead of just twice!!

Tickets sold out same day but now some are available through other ticket outlets.

I think we add Turner or Alexander and that's it. Tyus is not backing anybody up if he can help it.

jaybate • Oct 21, 2013 07:52 PM

@kip_McSmithers Nope, I've been around since 2009, but don't recall that one.

@RockChalk26 I would think that would cause Chemistry & Flow issues. I like the idea of getting the best of the best, but sometimes the price you pay is more detrimental when looking at the big picture.

Current status of the site • Oct 21, 2013 07:06 PM

Mac Desktop and Mac Mobile devices working well.

KUSports policy discussion. • Oct 21, 2013 06:57 PM

@approxinfinity I think the Dates are a great idea. As it is, I'm spending a little time bouncing around the threads to find out 'where all the action is." There is so much going on with the site being new, maybe in a few weeks, it'll all level out and we will be able to concentrate many of the forums under just a few threads. Right now, so much available, we are all over the place and the conversation is a little discombobulated. Just this guys opinion though, because overall...GREAT WORK!

I don't see Tyus fitting in here. But that is mainly because he withdrew from UK because "they already have a point guard." The catch to that, is that so does Duke. That being said, MikeK has a track record of playing freshmen talent, and Bill Self does not. If we ask our PG to play the '2' to get Tyus here, I'd honestly rather not have him. If Tharpe keeps improving, having him as our true PG will be the best scenario, imho. And from my vantage point, Tyus was on his phone pretty much the entire scrimmage. Take from that what you will because most kids these days are glued to their phones.

jaybate • Oct 21, 2013 04:30 PM

I think Jaybate will be here as soon as he can figure out how to make sure his identity cannot be traced.

KUSports policy discussion. • Oct 21, 2013 02:43 PM

I'd be willing to mail you a little cash to help maintain the site too. I know your intention was not to make money, but I have also created, maintained, and monitored sites like this, and I know it can be a tough undertaking. In a few months, especially in the heat of the season when we all start going crazy with the posts, you might want a little help.

Thanks MileHigh.

Bill is always going to go for the best of the best, regardless of OAD status. But I like the 2-4 year unit teams as well.

And how do you pronounce "Oubre"

Lumpy, Could you make out what Self was correcting with Conner?

Tharpe has the huge advantage over EJ in that Tharpe knows his role and always has. EJ was bounced around and had role identity/ transition issues.

My thoughts on Selden is that he is a beast. He moves great without the ball, he hustles--I can see him picking up a ton of offensive boards this year. He looks to be a good finisher around the rim. He is also the only one I can see that has the 'step on the throat' mentality too.

On Tharpe, I'd agree was okay. He just wasn't up to much today. Lots of dribbling and passing and just staying within himself. I didn't see him do anything great defensively, nor create much for himself or do anything extraordinary to create for anybody else.

Frank Mason appeared to be aggressive in wanting to put the rock down and get to the rim, but that also lead to some silly turnovers, and "sherron among the trees" scenarios as well.

Just listened to the Post Game from Self "core 5, 6, or 7 and a few other guys battling it out" So I take that as Greene, Frankamp, & Mason will emerge as another primary guard, and Lucas & Mari for the last part of the big rotation. I"m assuming a 4 man big rotation again anyway...

HEM, I would have to agree with about everything you said. From my vantage point, it looked as if Perry was the overall best player on the court at this point in time. The only thing that really amazed me about Wiggins was his explosiveness. I can't recall witnessing anybody elevate to the rim as fast as he can. His jump shot is strange, but they were dropping for him.

Black is a beast. I don't remember Kansas having a guy as ripped as him. Thomas was ripped too, but still this guy has 20 lbs on him.

I was surprised to read that Frankamp was 2/3, I didn't see him get off more than one shot. Before reading your comment, I was thinking he looked like he had clodhoppers on today.

I agree with you on Greene as well, he looks like he's got everything White has, but just not quite up to speed yet.

And I thought Jamari & Lucas left a lot to be desired on the offensive end as far as working down low. Can't really add much esle...

I just created a fake facebook name and page, but the LJW site isn't coming back to life....so I kept searching.
