"Earning a degree" Good for you Perry
Another 4 year Jayhawk we get to see on senior night - thank you !
Love the optimism as always from JB v1.0.. A good counterbalance to some of the other dire posts
- so - When are these guys going to announce ??
Yes very glad.. Not a huge surprise but..
Now lets hope he keeps texting/tweeting/calling Perry to join him for a great year ahead.
And - Can someone here please ask Embiid to keep tweeting Diallo to ignore the Squid for the next few days and stay the course for coming here? :)
Remember this was a thread about Perry Ellis and the arguments for his leaving/staying??
Yikes !
everything points to Perry staying at this point - a lot of upside factors if he stays and tries to improve his draft stock which is very low right now - plus I think he actually enjoys school
I've been surprised before, but this would be a new level of surprise if he bolts to become a late 2nd rounder now
just don't see it making any sense
@JRyman
that may be a fun activity - thanks for the tip

Make a list of the board heavies so we know who can comment and who can't!!!
good point - I guess I feel all of you are board heavies because I learn so much from all of the regular posters here.. definitely including you (plus haven't noticed any trolls here either.. but that another topic)
it is raining and cold here in Mass, basketball season is over, I am down in general - the cliff debacle didn't help, and was hoping for some informed opinions about Perry because him announcing he's leaving would send me into further despair. I am aware fully of what his strengths and limitations are, but he is one of ours, and I was counting on him being a 4-year guy.
@jaybate-1.0
well then this does not bode well for Cliff - he's got enough hurdles to overcome
and do guys switch from adidas to nike once they're in the pros or is it too difficult ?
some notable quotes from Bedore's recent article on KU sports.com
"Ellis, who averaged 13.8 points and 6.9 boards last season, has been mentioned as a possible second-round pick. None of the mock drafts have yet placed him in the first round. ESPN’s Chad Ford does not have him among his top-100 draft prospects."
"Ellis’ mom, Fonda, told the J-W on Wednesday, “Now that Perry has the report back (from NBA) and met with coach Self, we plan to discuss things this weekend as a family. Not sure if he will know by Monday or not but we have a plan in place to at least talk about it.”
I was always under the impression that Perry was a very good student and had always wanted to play for KU being a Kansas kid... thus has an incentive to stay and graduate - but I am naive
any thoughts from some board heavys on what is the most likely outcome?
Many mentions on various threads of Perry possibly leaving... ?
In my 20 years following the beloved hawks, i have been quite surprised before by guys leaving or transferring, but him leaving would be the biggest surprise by far.. I just do not see it at ALL
What am i missing about him and his game and his prospects ?
Hmmm ... I have been asking myself that Q all year... Would we trade UK's record for ours? ... Some days i would say yes, most days no... I have almost zero real attactment to our OAD's - like all i wish them well, but the beauty of being a fan is a real CONNECTION to our guys, and that happens Over time and THAT is what resonates with me. 2012 was as important to me, ( maybe a bit more) than 2008
Also, lotsa talk about OAd's and TAD's on this site for a few years...
People tend to lump them together - dont forget there is a tremendous difference between certain OADS - they are NOT all created equal, but since the NBA drafts on potential and not necesarily college performance, its easy to classify them as a group.
As mentioned above, certain oads were monsters- Unibrow was a beast in his one year as is okafor our biggest OAD get was Wigs, and for many reasons he was not able to really be a huge difference maker for us before he left. Lets not even talk about xavier and Selby.
Its not really a q of trying to recruit OADS and TADs but which PARTICULAR guys in that catagory that we could a) get and b) would fit with selfs current guys and system
As discussed in another thread, guys like Zim who say they want to protect themselves for a year before they turn pro are not who we should ever target. Yeesh.
!!!!!
I thought this may happen... Kensucky losing!!!!
Makes this year less disappointing..
:)
Buh-bye texas
Baylor falls...
What is happening with the tough big 12 ?
So much for winning the B12 tourney...
Although I would love to see WVU pester kentucky ... :)
@HighEliteMajor
Yes great post indeed... Great points
Interestingly, just looked at SI' s 4 "expert picks " ... all have Wichita State beating KU
Of, CBS sports 9 "experts", just 3 have KU over Wichita, and only ONE have KU beating Notre Dame to get to the Eight
@Lulufulu
Gillian anderson is on pretty cool bbc series called " the fall" you need a fix :)
Its on netflix
Like all readers here, i do pay special attention to the two (of the bigger group) of board heavyweights, HEM and Jaybate, and really try and understand the intelligent and informed lenghty posts that both put out regularly. It it fun to try and learn more, and delve deeper into the team and game we all love. Vaguely reminds me of the movie platoon - the young charlie Sheen being mentored by the different world views of the hard realist sgt Barnes and the more spiritual hopeful sgt Elias (now i know that movie didnt end well !)
I myself have been leaning thus past month to a myitkyina kind of veiwpoint and truly hope that jaybate is the more prophetic one
Yep i just switched to wisconsin game.. Havent really watched at all this year til now... They look scary good too.. Yikes!
Let us hope the tough big 12 this year has melded our mauraders into beasts that can find a way, any way, to bad ball our way into staying with a team like wisc
God would i love a first round tourney blowout by ku.. Its been so long since i could actually relax watching a game
@Lulufulu
Yeah.. It's rare that i have time to watch a lot of d1 games other than KU
It does kind of suck to watch them.. I am REALLY trying to meld in my mind the low scoring bad ball all-out war style that KU has been immeshed in for a month, and how it would look against KY
Its like a different game
.. Watched them yesterday too .. I dont know a ton about the intricacies of basketball at this level, but they just seem to be able to score soooo easily .. Inside, outside, it doesnt seem to matter... Sooo completely different from the bad ball style we ku fans have been watching for weeks.. They play with almost an arrogant confidence.. Cal doesnt seem to be doing anything other than rotate guys in.. Their opponents play desperate and panicked and just seen to fall apart..
It is frankly hard to envision who can beat them ... wisconsin? KU? Can bad ball really work against level of size and talent ??
Thoughts anyone?

@wrwlumpy
awesome pic of Barbara ! Wow. Really brings me back ...
Many memories Of my 13 yr old self coming home from school, grabbing a big bowl of captain crunch, and watching the afternoon lineup of gilligans island, mchales navy, and i dream of jeannie, and screaming at larry hagman .." Jeannie just asked you yet AGAIN 'if theres ANYTHING i can do for you master' ..... !!! What in the %#+*#% HELL is WRONG with you!!!! "
Ginger, maryanne and jeannie were a potent mix for my young hormones.. :)
thanks Crimsonoblue22 for the reminder about team USA!! ... just mdae my day knowing there will KU basketball in my life sooner than the fall
well said.. this has been so far a wild wooly weird season!!.. in my 20 years of following KU basketball, I've never been more happy to win the B12.. obviously, prior years we were expected to win easily, but this year is markedly unique and different.. gone apparently are the days of first half light scheduling for Coach Self, so my nerves are shot watching this team this particular year... yikes.... Self is going to kiil me I swear ( my kids now sort of understand that my screaming at the TV is not cause for calling 911)
ironically I've never been this non-interested in the B12 tournament - usually it's an icing-on-the-cake thing for me, a love-hate thing (if we expend too much energy winning the tournament, are we compromising our Big Dance chances??.. if we lose in the B12 tourney, is that a bad sign of things to come?? etc)... kinda glad I just don't care this year.. although i am TIRED of playing WVU.. lets hope UK or Dookie get them in their bracket and see how THEY like being relentlessly hounded like a pack of hyenas...
my prediction - I hope their toughness carries them to the 2nd weekend of the dance, then lets just hope for some good shooting and a bit of luck...
no one here will be surprised if our boys exit early or go to the final weekend.. it's that kind of unique season..
I love em though...
( and the WORST part of losing in the dance... no hoops til next Nov :(... AHHHHHH!!!! )
HM is also an excellent foul shooter.. if he could just get a decent shot fake, or work on ways to draw contact, he is money from the line.. we will every little thing we can possibly get from him and Lucas going forward
yes, Cliff's body language last night was telling.. looks almost as if he was hiding in the background in the team trophy pics.. I suspect he knows what's about to come down and it ain't good.
even though I have no illusions about his strengths and weaknesses, JamTray is my favorite player, and I suspect HCBS has a real soft spot for him too... he is exactly what coach loves in a player - total selfless work and dedication - someday a framed photo of JamTray diving wildly for a loose ball (like the incredible full flying leap from the Texas game) will be in HCBS's office - I would bet on it
Great questions.. What a year!! Which engender a few more questions for me:
Are we in the midst of witnessing possibly Self's greatest coaching effort?
Has a Kansas team ever had this ridiculously hard a schedule?
This far into league play, is the Big Red Dog looking less and less like a probable OAD?
And... Slightly of topic... How far back would one have to look to find a team more under pressure to win it all than this year's kentucky team?
Anything less than a ncaa championship would be an abject failure for them
Good topic
My quick story -
"You don't pick teams... They pick you"
Grew up in Denver, went to small liberal art college in CT, moved to Boston same year as bird and magic entering the NBA - was a NBA fan for 10 years then kinda lost interest.. Met my wife in '94 - she went to KU and always told me how incredible her college years were and how much she loved going to basketball games.. Her senior year Danny and the miracles won it all.. So she really wanted me to watch Kansas games with her, so being a good spouse i did, desite thinking that college basketball was inferior to the pros... After two years of watching games, i was completely HOOKED and saw the light (cue dramatic music :)
(Now I could care less about the National Boring Association)
i cant imagine a full life without the prospect of Kansas basketball... I simply cannot WAIT for each season to start
