Baylor vs Kansas Chat • Mar 13, 2015 11:07 PM

@BeddieKU23 What was that? No pressure, nothing...

Baylor vs Kansas Chat • Mar 13, 2015 11:05 PM

Already a difference - we make a 3!

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 11:11 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Certainly hope you are right - Baylor is playing well now

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 10:22 PM

@jhawkintexas Who - Greene has missed 14 in a row - 2 for his last 22. Selden has missed 12 in a row and 2 for his last 20. No one really wants to take the shot now.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:29 PM

See you tomorrow...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:27 PM

Nothing stupid now

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:25 PM

Only took them 59 minutes to make that adjustment...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:22 PM

Get a stop!!!!!

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:16 PM

The matador defense strategy

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:13 PM

Wow - i think that is Selden's first ribbie since the 3rd game of the season ;)

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:10 PM

@KUSTEVE He and Ziegler should just go one on one the rest of the game - everybody else get off the court!

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:09 PM

This is ridiculous - we have only 1 FT made by anyone other than KO

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:06 PM

@brooksmd Point is to not let him get there - double him up high

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:05 PM

This is classic Self - sticking with Selden and not going with the guy who is actually producing...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:03 PM

Where is the help when Ziegler gets in the lane???

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 09:01 PM

@DCHawker Like I said...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:59 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Drive was nice - non-goal tending call was crap

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:56 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Not taking it back yet - would still rather have Svi out there right now.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:53 PM

It should be Mason, Graham, Svi and Oubre the rest of the way - and just taking turns with each guy at the 5 until they foul out.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:52 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Hah - shouldn't have edited...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:50 PM

Selden gives us nothing out there - ride Svi the rest of the way

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:49 PM

Wasn't kidding earlier when I said KO will be at the 5 by the time this game is over!

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:46 PM

@KUSTEVE Bad ball at its baddest On offense, just spread the floor and let Oubre and Mason take turns taking it to the rim and take your chances at the FT line. On defense, as long as Anderson is out, just double Ziegler every time.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:43 PM

Ziegler is the only one that can hurt us - double him up - make someone else beat us dammit

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:39 PM

Wow - this is really, really, really ugly

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:34 PM

Step up and put 2-3 guys in Ziegler's path - he's not a spot up shooter or passer

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:31 PM

@nuleafjhawk Is that a rhetorical question???

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:10 PM

Too many TOs and fouls, but up 7. If we can tighten it up, we can put this away...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:08 PM

KO + 3rd on Anderson!

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:07 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 3rd in less than 10 minutes of PT - all bad/lazy ones.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 08:02 PM

@brooksmd Great line - unfortunately, now 2 fouls - along with Hunter and Devonte.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:57 PM

Svi is playing solid D on Ziegler - keeping in front of him

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:53 PM

Weird game - dead crowd, lousy announcers, no pace or rhythm.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:45 PM

@brooksmd Not his possession, but his parents. Stonewalling - stick a fork in him; he's done.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:41 PM

@cragarhawk If we were, it would be 32-6 right now...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:34 PM

Read the friggin' scouting report on Ziegler - lay off him on the perimeter - let him shoot from there

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:32 PM

By the end of the game, we may have KO at the 5 and BG at the 4!

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:30 PM

@KUSTEVE Yeah - but I'd also like to see some fire, passion, energy - can't seem to generate it until the last 5 minutes of a game that they're behind.

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:26 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 6 for last 32 - more than due!

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:24 PM

@KUSTEVE I just hope he didn't come to shoot too much from the perimeter...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:23 PM

Giveth and taketh away...

TCU vs Kansas • Mar 12, 2015 07:21 PM

Immediate TO by Selden - been the MO

ELLIS A NO PLAY, UNIFORMS SUCK, NEXT • Mar 12, 2015 05:26 PM

@BeddieKU23 Agree wholeheartedly - just not how we did it last game - BG was matched on Ziegler much of the time he was in, played him close on the perimeter and Ziegler just blew by on a handful of occasions.

ELLIS A NO PLAY, UNIFORMS SUCK, NEXT • Mar 12, 2015 05:21 PM

@BeddieKU23 Yes! The key is for our perimeter guys to recognize that - not rocket science...

ELLIS A NO PLAY, UNIFORMS SUCK, NEXT • Mar 12, 2015 05:07 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Well, let's just say that our other bigs should be to contribute more than a less than fully healthy or tentative Perry. ;) And, as noted by someone in the TCU thread, read the scouting report on Ziegler - last game, we (mostly BG) let him drive to the basket almost every time he touched the ball.

ELLIS A NO PLAY, UNIFORMS SUCK, NEXT • Mar 12, 2015 04:58 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 The rest of the guys will have to come ready to play. While we would be locked as a #2 seed with a win, it's conceivable that we could end up with a #3 seed if we lose this one, depending on how other conference tourneys play. For example, it's possible that Turgeon and the Terrapins could leapfrog us if we lose to TCU. While their overall body of work isn't nearly as strong, we would add a bad loss - meaning it's to a 100+ RPI team - and if they win out, they would be adding probably 3 top 50 wins - and would have a 29-5 record.

BIG TWELVE TOURNAMENT • Mar 10, 2015 01:08 AM

Story by Andy Katz re Self's press conference and prospects for Ellis, Greene and Alexander playing in the B12 tourney:

Kansas coach Bill Self, appearing on the ESPNU "College Basketball" podcast Monday, said Perry Ellis is still a question mark for the Big 12 tournament after missing the OU game with a sprained knee.

"He will wear a brace for the rest of the season," Self said. "If the doctors say he's not feeling well enough, we will sit him for the tournament. All indications are he is doing well with his lateral movement."

"We will press forward and put him in position, and hopefully he'll be 100 percent by the NCAA tournament," Self said.

Self suspended Brannen Greene for the Oklahoma game.

"It should be a one-game suspension as long as he did what he was supposed to do," Self said. "Hopefully he's been on time for class and done what's required. There's no reason why he shouldn't play. We certainly could have used him. We were short-handed. We're certainly better with him in the long run."

Freshman Cliff Alexander has missed the past three games as he sits due to an NCAA inquiry. Yahoo! Sports reported that Alexander's absence is related to a financial agreement his family made with an agency specializing in loans to agents and athletes before his enrollment at Kansas. Self said he learned information from the Yahoo! report.

"I had never heard of an agent or financial adviser mentioned [with Alexander]," Self said. "That doesn't mean it didn't happen."

Self said Alexander won't play until the NCAA enforcement and the family meet to discuss the situation.

"We're basically moving on and preparing as if we're not having Cliff," Self said. "We won't have him if they're not all on the same page."

Self said he's still optimistic Alexander will return but "the odds would be zero and no chance" if the parties don't meet.

Self said amateurism rules need to be overhauled. Prospective athletes can talk to agents but cannot enter into any agreement or accept compensation before declaring for the NBA draft and retain eligibility.

Self did play Wayne Selden, who was cleared to participate on an injured ankle, but he wasn't effective on Saturday, going 0-for-7 and finishing with no points in 18 minutes.

"Hopefully he'll be 100 percent," Self said. "We didn't have a lot of firepower but still got 73 points on the road."

Self said the Jayhawks have enough to get through a three-day grind at the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City.

"We could go and win three or go home sad Thursday," Self said. "There's no clear-cut favorite."

@HighEliteMajor Agree with the Selden "puzzlement." As I posted in another thread with regard to Wayne and the Devonte option:

"Health may be a part of it, but having watched him closely for the past two years, I think that maybe Selden is what he is - which is a solid, but limited ballplayer. I had really thought that based on his freshman year, he would be a consistent 15 ppg scorer, tough defender and someone you could post against smaller guards down low. Alas, it hasn't played out that way.

The reason I'm a bit skeptical that it is all injury related is that he's shown a fair amount of hop on several occasions trying (and succeeding) in blocking breakaway layups. And, lack of hops or bad ankle doesn't have that much to do with his ball-handling, which, putting it mildly, is not good. He is one-handed and cannot deal with pressure and he is simply clueless driving into traffic.

I don't mean to be down on the guy - he seems like a really solid citizen and I'm glad he is a Jayhawk. But, right now, he isn't our best option on the wing.

With regard to Devonte, he's struggled a bit (including yesterday), but I give him a pass because he is still a freshman and hasn't played the full season. In his last 3 games where he's gotten more than 20 minutes, he's scored 20, 10 and 8. More importantly, he contributes in other ways - unlike Selden, he can drive fairly effectively. And, the offense opens a bit more when he and Frank are in at the same time - allows more chances for him, Frank or Kelly to attack the rim. Whether it's injury or not (and I'm not convinced that it Is), I think Devonte gives us a lot more than Selden right now."

Unless Selden is 100% healthy, I think we would be much better off with Graham getting the starter level minutes at the 2 - and giving Selden, Svi and Greene the sub minutes at the 2 or 3.

@ParisHawk Actually, I don't think how we do has much effect on where we land - we're fairly well locked in as a 2 seed (if we lose in 1st rd of B12, there may be some risk of falling to a 3). Whether we play Duke or UVA depends on how they do. UVA is slotted ahead of Duke right now, so gets the #1 in the East. If Duke wins the ACC tourney, it is possible that they get the more favored East slot - esp. if UVA were to get upset by one of the bottom feeders in the 1st round. The biggest concern is Villanova - that is, not winning the Big East. If they don't, I don't think they get the last #1 - would open it up for Wisconsin or Arizona. If Wisconsin were to get it, they would be the #1 in the West - which opens up the #2 in Kentucky's bracket - geography rules could end us slotting us there.

So the Big 12 sucks? • Mar 08, 2015 10:38 PM

@DoubleDD Well, a couple of things. First, I never said that a "one and done" tournament is THE gauge of a strong conference, although I would posit that over time it is a pretty good one as it is the only relatively level (no home courts) playing field mechanism for brining the best teams of each conference together. What I said was that the reality was the B12 has underperformed other conferences, significantly so, in the past decade.

I'm not saying that ACC is a powerhouse - it has had a lot of bad teams at the bottom, esp. after it expanded. But, and I hate to have to say this because I don't like either of them, but UNC and Duke combined have many more FFs and championships during this period than Kansas. And, they've had 3 teams make the FF, compared to our 1.

Take away UConn and the Big East is a failure? Louisville was a Big East member. Syracuse, Georgetown and even WVU (as a Big East member) have also been in the FF in the last decade. Again, we've had no one other than KU.

Apart from championships and FFs, what about over all tournament success? Unfortunately, not any better by that metric. Last year we got 7 teams in and only 6 total wins. In two or three years, there were as many as 5 or 6 conferences that had more wins during a particular tournament than the B12. The only year in the past decade where the B12 had the best overall tournament record was, not surprisingly, '08. 12 total wins, 6 by the Hawks.

The only other way to compare the strength of conferences is during the non-conference portion of the schedule. This year we had the #1 conference RPI - most years we are behind the B10, Big East and ACC, but often ahead of the Pac 12 or SEC.

I'm very hopeful that this year we can translate regular season success - one measure of strength - into post-season success - another measure of strength. I repeat, however, that the objective reality is that hasn't been the case consistently or as compared to some of the other power conferences over the past decade. If one perceives differently, then I might respectfully suggest one needs new glasses.

This coming from someone who pulls hard for all the B12 teams in the tournament to do well, because it would further help cement KU's legacy.
