@JayHawkFanToo hope so
@Eric-san heard that too. Why would he say that?
@AsadZ I agree. I am slightly concerned that the team we saw loaf around and be lackadaisical will show up again. It obviously hasnt, but it makes me wonder.
A lot of people in the media (like every Espn segment about the tournament, around the horn, pti, laphonso ellis, Sean farnham) are wondering that also and they are saying we are just on a hot streak - they also say the winner of the south will win the championship. Hope our guys are listening.
That 2012 team is very special to me. They were tough, poised and made timely plays against really good teams. This years team has so much more firepower offensively and can be great if they decide to play defense and win the rebounding battle.
Great win today but it doesnt mean anything if we dont win on Saturday evening against an athletic and tough Oregon team. Our guys need to play with great energy again and be disruptive on the defensive end.
This is the moment all of us have been waiting for since last years disappointing end. Frank said he thinks about it all the time and they dont want it to happen again. Our guys are ready and they have been waiting. It is not going to be a blowout - I fully anticipate a back and forth game that goes down to the end.
This game goes to show how important ball pressure and active hands are. Must do that on Saturday to disrupt Oregon.
They really turned up thd heat from 200 to 400 degrees in the second half. Was not expecting that dominating performance.
@Texas-Hawk-10 unbelievable.
Why not?
"Wow" is all I can say
What a performance.
They can't stay in front of our guards.
Poy
@DCHawker amen.
Keep the pressure on!
Now we're rolling baby!!
Oh Landen
Strong move by Landen
@BShark yes, that would mean Biggie is guarding Josh.
Keep running and pushing. Don't let them take the lead and give them hope and confidence.
@DCHawker if they keep going with two bigs, Jackson will have numerous opportunities.
@DoubleDD our defense has led to run outs. Have to keep the pressure on.
@DoubleDD except for UCLA.
@DoubleDD second half of Purdue firstly.
Great way to end the end. Love the energy
Should throw some zone at them second half.
Much better. Josh active even though he's not scoring.
Boy, better straighten things up second half. Not covering shooters, missing bunnies, and giving them transition opportunities. What exactly is our plan to stop their bigs? Don't see much right now. Not a good start.
@JayHawkFanToo definitely. I predict this one is a foul fest - got to have contrast right?
The key as usual is defense. Iowa State did not disrupt them at all last week.
Interesting stat: Selfs only two sweet sixteen losses were to big 10 teams - MSU in 2009 and Michigan in 2013. 2017 - ?
@DoubleDD I'll be stoked with a W.
@drgnslayr I would do that too!
Some losses are easier for me to watch than others. I recently watched highlights from the UNI and VCU games - those just dont bother me as much anymore, but I just cant watch the Nova loss or the Michigan loss. Both of those teams were national title caliber and didnt even make it out of their region.
@mayjay if they think that, they obviously dont watch many of our games.
Nice to see you again!
@Crimsonorblue22 two different things. Coach SHOULD evaluate the teams that we could face, but he should not try to change style or not play to his teams strengths,especially on purpose.
@jaybate-1.0 why would this team playing to its strengths not allow them to win on Saturday?
@jaybate-1.0 show me a quote that Bill prefers the method you described in a one and done tournament. Dont cite ceos, executives or other coaches - show me evidence that Bill does that.
You say you are glad he is in charge - while he is no doubt a great coach, how many final fours has he been to in fourteen years? Just two. If he really is using the method you described, then he needs to drastically alter his approach.
The advantage of this team is their speed and quickness. Trust me, we dont want a grind it out low scoring game with a really smart Purdue team - that could be dangerous. Speed up the tempo and get as many runouts as possible.
@JayHawkFanToo that would be nice, especially since I'm sure a lot of potential recruits and people from the AAC will be watching him. However, I will believe Marsha can be classy when I see it.
@jayballer54 I am quite certain he would share his opinion. I'm sure he would be quite happy if we lose tomorrow also.
Just saw that Marshall is going to be a guest analyst tomorrow night for CBS, which means he will be commenting on our game. Oh boy. This will be interesting.
The only game KU has right now that I am aware of is Purdue. The ONLY thing we should focus on is winning that game. Anything else is silly. They have to win this one to move on or else "what ifs" and all these theories and plans mean nothing. Win at all cost.
@JayHawkFanToo thanks for bringing up recent opponents. Purdue's two bigs arent the problem in this game - its their guards that we must neutralize in order to win.
@JayHawkFanToo great analogy. Can't save anything for a game that we aren't guaranteed to play in. Our guys will be ok.
@jaybate-1.0 Yes I agree. I recommended switching between man and zone on the other thread, as it would hopefully make Purdue stand around a bit and make them think. BUT save the bulk of the wrinkles for the second half. Keep it close then go all out if need be.
I like the zone because, as you said, there is a second man behind Biggie. If Josh/Svi/Lagerald front the post, Landen or Coleby can be behind Biggie, thus eliminating the post entry. Something I remember from the Kentucky game is Landen playing higher up in the lane making it more like a 2 - 1 - 2 zone. That pretty much eliminates the high post from being wide open and Biggie having an open 15 foot jumper.
You may be right about a zone working better for Purdue than for us. However, Frank is one of the fastest players in the nation and should be able to break a zone down if needed. That is one of the most crucial aspects of winning in March - you have to have a player that can go get a bucket at any given point.
If this team had another fast guard, I wonder if Bill would press more often. Frank and Devonte are great at pressuring the other team in the back court - Devonte in particular is capable of pick pocketing at certain points, and Josh's length helps him to get out in passing lanes. I would say only press if need be.
@Eric-san Devonte is really important for next year's team. Preseason top five if he returns.
@drgnslayr great example of Nova. Their post denial defense in the tournament was maybe the best I've ever seen and on par with the 08 team defensively. I'm not sure if our guys can be like those teams, but it's possible they can be effective in disrupting Purdue's offense, something that Iowa State did not do in the first half. They seemed to be too concerned about jump shots and offense instead of defending.
Ball pressure is priority #1. As usual, the outcome will be determined by guard play. Rotations on doubling are important to not mess up.
HEM - Great points. We have to make Biggie uncomfortable and get him to constantly think about where the double teams are coming from. However, we can't focus too much on Biggie and forget about their guards who are more than capable of scoring and cutting to the paint for easy points (ISU game). I'm not sure if Bill would do it, but switching occasionally between zone and man would add a little wrinkle to the game and make Purdue stand around a bit, just like our game at Kentucky.
I hope our guards continue to push the ball after rebounds - Purdue is not fast enough to stay in front of the POY. Period. My concern is Bill will want to play at Purdue's pace which will limit our opportunities for easy baskets.
From kusports.com -
"We're not gonna back down from anybody or let anybody punk us."
I love the attitude by our guys. The upperclassmen have had hard losses in the tourney by teams that have been tougher. Wichita State in 2015 absolutely punked them and was a tougher team. Nova was not quite as bad but Ochefu owned all the bigs, including Landen, and Jenkins, Hart and Arccidiacano had the upper hand against the guards. Even if they lose, it won't be because they softened up or anything like that. It's actually a good thing that we played Izzo early, as it tested the mental and physical toughness of our team.
Winning in the tournament is all about toughness and I am glad that our guys have developed that mentality which will allow them to be in a good position moving forward.
@BeddieKU23 ah ok thanks. Is he a recruit for next year (fall of 2017)?
