How about FT %? :)

@jayballer54

Diallo is not a 5, he is a college PF that might end up playing SF in the NBA, much like Ingram. At KU he would play PF. Would it surprise to know that both Lucas and Mickelson are listed as Forward at KU? They are...what makes you think Diallo is a 5?

@Crimsonorblue22

I don't have a clue. It could be that Diallo is waiting for Ingram to sign with KU so he can come as well and make it one of KU's greatest classes and the team a contender...or it could be that he will sign with KU if Ingram does not so he can have the spotlight and assured playing time, or...well, you see that it can be spun a hundred ways and I just don't know which way it will play... :(

At this point we are all just guessing...

@BeddieKU23

I will guess that Ingram's destination will have a bearing in his decision; it would be too much of a coincidence that he waited until Ingram's announcement...and I don't believe in coincidences.

@drgnslayr

The property ion question is not even close to being the size need for an athletic facility; anything other than a sports bar is just wishful thinking.

More importantly how do we know if Pollard would be a good teacher/instructor? TTBOMK he has not coached or instructed anywhere and just because he was great college player and played in the NB does not automatically qualify him to be one. Perhaps the best center ever (I know Wilt is in the conversation) Kareem Abdul Jabbar has been trying for ever to coach and other that some sporadic work as an assistant and one stint as a head coach of a Minor League team, the best he could do was assistant in a HS team in an Indian Reservation.

Again, I am not saying the Pollard would or would not make a good instructor, I don't know and none of us know..I would think that if he is capable and willing thre is abig chance that KU would hire him or alt least he would start there as a volunteer. I seriously doubt Coach Self would invest money on such an unknown quantity. A sports bar on the other hand seems like a sure thing in a college town...that is what Larry Brown did.

Ingram Token Sign or The Real Deal • Apr 27, 2015 03:27 PM

IMHO, he was always UNC fan and likely it was his original destination but the cloud of sanctions makes it now an iffy destination; if he was going to go to UNC he would have announced a long time ago. NC State is not elite enough and likely out of the run.

This leaves Duke and KU, although the Squid might have some salary cap left and you never know how and when he will use it.

KU is a destination that makes sense, He would develop his game, particularly defense (which the NBA is starting to appreciate), depending on Greene's and Svi's progress, he wold have plenty of playing time, exposure comparable or better to any other program in the land, great new digs, a prime-time PG to feed him the ball and the best athletic trainer in the business. If KU gets Diallo as well, there is no question that they would be in the conversation for the Title.

At Duke, he will be the crown jewel for a program that just won the National Championship and all the playing time he wants; with him and a newly signed PG (although unproven) that was recruited just to feed him the ball, Duke is once again a national contender. No question that the benefits are comparable to KU plus he gets to stay in state and get the East Coast press.

If I were a betting man, I would say the edge goes to Duke where he will get plenty of playing time and press. At KU he will also get a lot of press (but not as much) and become better player, but he will have to earn the playing time, Having said that it would not surprise much either way...of course I would much rather prefer he chooses KU.

@FarSideHawk

...I see what you did there, nice move. :)

Ingram Token Sign or The Real Deal • Apr 27, 2015 03:43 AM

No question that Duke has gone all out and he is their top priority. I would say that Duke has a 50%, KU a 30% and UNC a 10%.

@ralster

LOL... you got so excited about the food and Coach Self that forgot my question about Wiggins... :)

No biggie; it can wait.

Pot and Its Impact on BB IQ? • Apr 26, 2015 11:11 PM

@sfbahawk

Gee! it just took looking at your own post and links you cited and from your own second link:

!Drug Usage.JPG ↗

You can see that the illicit drug use (23.9M) plus marijuana use (18,.9M) is considerably larger than the prescription drugs abuse (6.8M).

Like I said, prescription drugs abuse is a big and growing problem but compared to the other illicit drugs is not nearly as big. BTW, that is the largest number cited I have seen for prescription drug abuse and most other surveys have it in the 2-4 million.

I am sure we both can find other statistics to support our assertion but in the end, it is irrelevant. Can we just agree to disagree on the numbers and agree that drug abuse of all kinds is a big and growing problem in this country? I, for one, would prefer to get back to talking KU basketball.

@ralster

Hey...I love the Salty Iguana; the original in Prairie Village is still the best. Luckily I have one very close to my home on 135th St. in Overland Park.

Would you says that Wiggins was the best freshman ever at KU? Didn't he break the scoring record? and, can you think of a better defender (as a freshman) than Wiggins? Maybe he was not "his" best or the best player at KU...we obviously have had many...but who played better as a freshman? Maybe we are holding him to a higher standard than we should. Just sayin'...

Pot and Its Impact on BB IQ? • Apr 26, 2015 08:14 PM

@sfbahawk

The addiction to illegal drugs is more than 10 times the amount of prescription drugs. Yes it is a problem, a growing problem, a big problem, but the abuse/addiction of/to illegal drugs is one order of magnitude larger. Let's keep things in perspective.

@drgnslayr

What I hear from my acquaintances in Lawrence is that Pollard wants to open a sports bar there...

@HighEliteMajor

One issue I have is that you make it sound that when KU does not get a player is because the staff did not recruit him hard enough or promised him the sky. As much as we like KU and think is the best place to come play ball, after all we have the tradition, the name, the coach, the facilities, the fans...you have you consider that some recruits just do not feel that way and will likely go anywhere else but KU. Of course most recruits will consider KU because being courted by KU gives them clout and leverage, but many really have no intentions of ever coming to KU, they might even indicate they like KU and are seriously considering it so they continue to get all the free KU gear but in reality they have no intention of ever coming to KU. Kids nowadays (and their handlers) are pretty savvy about this stuff/marketing and will string along several schools even when they know early on where they really want to go. There is plenty of anecdotal information that Malik Newman was going to Mississippi State all along (his father went there) but he kept several schools hoping he would change his mind.

Pot and Its Impact on BB IQ? • Apr 26, 2015 04:36 PM

One issue that is often overlooked is the fact...yes, it is a proven fact...that just about every heavy drug user started with pot until it was not enough and then graduated to the heavier drugs from which there is no way back. Pot is a "gateway" drug. Yes, there are many recreational, occasional users that go no further than pot, but for many, it opens the gates to heavier drugs and that is a real issue. I would be curious to see how the number of heavy drug user will increase over the year in Colorado now that pot is legal.

I remember an interview (60 Minutes years ago) with a doctor that started with pot and then graduated to cocaine and heroine and got fully addicted...he said... there is no divorce from drugs, only a temporary separation...those words have stuck with me ever since since it is the best explanation of what drug addiction is.

By the way, the Governor of Colorado. John Hickenlooper is on the record as saying: If I could've waved a wand the day after the election, I would've reversed the election This was a bad idea.

@drgnslayr

Don't forget that "allegedly" Wilt dunk free throws and the rule that the player cannot cross the free throw line was created because of that...

Rule Change - Wilt Chamberlain: Free throw plane

When Wilt Chamberlain was in high school, he had a unique way of shooting free-throws. He would stand at the top of the key, throw the ball up toward the basket, take two steps, jump toward the rim and jam the ball through the net. Doing this resulted in basketball rules to state that a player cannot cross the plane of the free-throw line when shooting a free-throw.

I have searched extensively over the years and I have not found any evidence he ever did this at a game at any level. The closest it came is that he did it during practice and didn't really dunk the ball but laid it in.

@KUSTEVE

Not that simple. He needs to have enough credits to graduate and most don't have and if they do and they are young enough, they might need to stay in college 2 years like Svi, something that most of the top players consider too much of a risk.

KC & Chitown Fight Nite • Apr 25, 2015 07:13 PM

Pure and simple, MONEY. The older stadiums don't have all the huge money making corporate suits or the extended capacity or the expensive concessions or...well, you get the point...

@drgnslayr

"The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky, it's going to give Cleveland State two more years' probation." - Jerry Tarkanian

The NCAA must have been really pissed with one of the East Coast blue bloods that gave Mid-West KU a penalty way beyond what it should have been. Now, KU is big enough and has enough money, smarts and clout that it is unlike that it will happen again.

KC & Chitown Fight Nite • Apr 25, 2015 06:55 PM

@VoyagingJayhawk

The architects come up with several concepts but the final look is selected uniquely by the owner, i.e. the guys that pays the bill...can't really blame the architects. The architectural firm that designed both stadiums, HOK (they have new name now), is considered one of the top if not the top sports venues architectural firms in the country.

@ralster

This whole waiting out the OAD-circus/late-declarations simply leaves a feeling of us waiting for the 1-bird-in-hand, which causes us to LOSE the 2-in-the-bush. (& we've lost the potential 1-in-hand more than once, leaving us with zilch.)

Should that be waiting for 1-bird-in-the-bush causes us to lose 2-birds-in-hand? :)

You hit the nail in the head about OADs becoming TADs; look at Kaleb Tarczewski, a presumed OAD and who now will be playing his 4th year at Arizona. Had he come to big man U, KU, he might be in the NBA by now...and KU might have a few more wins...

ACC owns the NCAA • Apr 25, 2015 06:27 PM

@drgnslayr

Actually, only Coach Brown gave money to Askew to go see his dying his grandmother and it was not considered a big violation. KU was arrogant/stupid enough to think that in-house counsel could handle the issue instead or hiring a law firm that specialized in this type of work like most other programs did, and naturally they failed miserably. Had they hired outside counsel, KU would have gotten a slap in the wrist; the violation was so minor and stupid that the NCAA itself established a program to help student in that particular situation.

I heard this version fist hand from a couple of individuals that were involved in the process including one of the attorneys so I am very confident is correct.. This type of situation is not unique to colleges or sports, and in the real world, many corporations do the same thing only to end up calling consultants to save the day. I should know, I am one of those consultants.

ACC owns the NCAA • Apr 25, 2015 04:49 PM

They are smart...they hire better attorneys. KU on the other hand, thought that the in-house counsel was good enough in 1988 and instead of getting a hand slap they were handed a one year suspension, and was unable to defend the title in 1989 and broke the streak of appearances...which is back to being the longest...

@ralster

The last upper classmen laden team Coach Self had (2012) made it to the finals and came within a couple of missed dunk beating UK and the Unibrow, the last player to almost single-handedly carry a team through a season, although it was the upper classmen in that team that really won that game for UK. Hopefully this KU team can duplicate and improve on what the 2012 accomplished.

I think you are missing my point. I did not say that Ohioans do not root for OSU, in fact in my post I mentioned that football is king, but also, the farther west you go, the less they like the arrogant attitude of their grads and their insistence that the school be called "THE" Ohio State. Not that different than Kansas where most people are big fans of the basketball program, but once you get past Topeka they think KU people are arrogant and hence the term Snob Hill...perhaps you heard it?

My beliefs are pretty close to yours and have evolved over the years. I am still fiscally conservative but more of a moderate in social issues, and when it comes to government affairs, I am getting more disillusioned with both parties and starting to lean Libertarian. I hate all the government intrusion in our private lives, unfortunately most Americans, even well educated professionals, don't have a clue of the level and extent of this intrusion...if they did we would have another revolution.

Bill Self to OKC! • Apr 25, 2015 01:21 AM

@MoonwalkMafia

I'm not sure you've met many Ohioans...

But I have,...I did my undergraduate work in Ohio, not THE Ohio State, but at another of the many excellent schools in the state. Yes, they are king in football but there are other good basketball programs in the state, Cincinnati. Xavier, Dayton, Ohio come to mind. This last season Dayton advanced as far as OSU and the year before Dayton Eliminated OSU on its way to the elite 8. BTW, the previous two years before that, OSU was eliminated by Wichita State and Kansas.

P.S. I am rolling my eyes as I type... :)

Royals, bad ass team • Apr 25, 2015 01:02 AM

Looks like baseball royalty, and I am not talking the "Royal" kind, has a problem with the Royals wining the conference last year after squeaking into the playoffs and now showing that they were no fluke and the can really play, and they decided to take them down a notch or two. I don't believe in coincidences and the Royals definitely seem to have been targeted. I hope they settle down and continue winning...nothing pi$$es off your opponents more than losing to what they consider to be an inferior team.

Not a big baseball fan but I always cheered for the underdog and the Royals are the poster boys for underdog.

@jaybate-1.0

Tubby did not leave as much as he was let go...to put it mildly, even when he officially "resigned;" nobody resigns from Kentucky to take the HC position at Minnesota. Also, Calipari did not replace Tubby, Billy Gillespie did.

Newman • Apr 24, 2015 08:34 PM

That would make it a monster recruiting class for KU. ESPN's Biancardi had him down to Michigan and Cal but Brown denied it was the case, but with UCLA in the mix it sounds like he likes the West Coast.

You beat me to it. I wonder if some of the younger posters are familiar with Seinfeld, a show about...well, nothing; after all, it has been off the air for 17 years although there are reruns all the time,.

@BeddieKU23

Even if KU does not pick any other player, it should be at least as good or better than last season. Oubre will be ably replaced by Svi and Green so no drop there and possibly better production. Bragg should be, or I should say hopefully will be, an improvement over Alexander whom I think would have been much improved player in his second or third year but in his first year, IMHO, underperformed and underwhelmed. Plus we get the rest of the team back with one extra year of experience and a summer full of practice and game time experienced against top competition that should hit the ground running next season. No doubt a legitimate to 10 team and maybe a top 5 and, if we get a quality big, a top 3 and national title contender. Just my opinion, of course.

@BeddieKU23

I did not say I agreed with it...UT, ISU and OU were picked to finish ahead of KU last season and remember how that turned out? On the other hand, ISU won 2 out of 3 against KU last season...

I was simply reporting what all the pre-season rankings have...and all of them have ISU ahead of KU; maybe you can find one that has KU ranked ahead of ISU? I could not. Now if we get Diallo or a starting quality big then the dynamic change, wouldn't you agree?

OSU Hit With NCAA Violations • Apr 24, 2015 05:36 PM

@RockChalkinTexas

Is that the basketball or football programs or both? "Athletic Department" would appear to indicate both; not a big deal for basketball since they are at best middle of the pack and Ford is close to being replaced, but the football program is big and a national contender.

@jaybate-1.0

...and MU will continue to finish at the bottom...

Bill Self to OKC! • Apr 24, 2015 05:03 PM

@KUinLA

I don't think it is fair to use Self overall winning % as representative of what he is doing now or in the recent past. You forget that he started at Oral Robers, a school that had not had a winning record in years and turned it into a winner, same thing with Tulsa which he took to the Elite 8. Roy Williams had the fortune of starting at KU who was coming back from winning a national title and he did not have to build a winning team from perennial loser and then he moved to UNC, another college basketball powerhouse.

Most employers nowadays will ask only what is your experience for the last 10 years and consider anything before that irrelevant. Look at Self's record at KU over the last 12 years and tell me how many coaches you can find with a comparable record? To be fair look at the record of all coaches over the last 10 years, a reasonable time to evaluate, and tell me how many have a better record than Self and how many even break the 80% winning number?

@BeddieKU23

OU will be right in the chase. They have a 7' Junior College player and 2 guards coming and get the bulk of their team back; Hield is the best player in the conference.and makes them a contender. If we don't get Diallo, OU and ISU will be the favorites to win the Conference next season. ISU is pre-season top 5 (as high as #2) in all the rankings I have seen and OU is top 10 and KU somewhere in between.

@HighEliteMajor

Good points and sound logic. In my mind it all boils down to old school basketball where upper class men played and the younger players learned and by extension....an experienced and competent junior is better than any OAD. Unfortunate that train left the station and is not coming back and in the long term it will mark the start of the demise of the sport as we know it, and to a large extent we can blame it on the squid, although he is by no means alone.

I long for the days when we could see a player develop and follow his progress over several years and then at the next level; now, by the time we start to see progress...he is gone. When I watch the NBA and I see Hinrich or Pierce or Mario or Collison or the twins play I have memories of all the games I watched them play as Jayhawks; when I watch Wiggins I know he is a Jayhawk but he does not elicit the same emotion as the other players do...in this respect, I pity UK fans, so many players in the NBA and so few they really know.

California is highly populated, no doubt, but it is not quite at 50 million yet...although if our president has it his way with the amnesty program it could well get there in hurry. California is a shade shy of 39 Million.

Not Bad - New Job for Bonnie • Apr 24, 2015 03:53 PM

Bonnie did relatively well with what she had to work and took KU to two Sweet 16 2 years in a row matching KU's men's team. In 2012 as #11 seed they beat highly ranked Delaware #3 with one if the best (and prettiest) players in the game, Elena Delle Donne and #6 Nebraska, and lost to #2 Tennessee; the next years as #12 seed they beat #5 Colorado and #4 South Carolina and lost to #1 Notre Dame. She seems to be a better post-season than regular season coach.

Bets of luck to her in Santa Barbara, one of my favorite towns in California.
