@drgnslayr

ISU is bringing just about everybody back and a few new players including a talented 7' Greek that had to sit one year. No question that they will start as favorites to win the Conference next season and if Diallo joins the team, they will be a top 3 team, no question about it. IMHO, Niang is good, really, really good and will likely start as pre-season POY in the Conference.

I believe KU basketball players use similar technology when working with Hudy; all the training machines are computerized and keep track of the progress of all players.

@sfbahawk

This political crap is getting out of hand. If you want to have people appreciate this drivel go to redstate or some other place occupied by dullards. It is people like you who devalue a degree from the University of Kansas.

As a matter of fact, I do live in a red state, BY CHOICE, so I don't have to go to one. Nice of you to call us, Kansans, dullards; it makes me wonder how you ever survived in Lawrence, Kansas surrounded by us, dullards.

I take it that your entire rather offensive comment was in relation to my casual, one sentence about Global Warming? If that is the case and you feel so strongly about it, I will be happy to debate the subject with you in a forum of your choice, although this has been debated at nauseaum and real scientists - and by this I mean the ones that have no problem making their source, data and methods available for peer review and not the ones that spout opinions as fact and refuse to make available the information used to reach their conclusions or collude on how to alter data to justify their conclusions - have proved beyond a doubt the gigantic scam that Global Warming is. On the other hand why bother, it seems like you have your mind made up and frankly, I have no desire to change it plus...how likely is it that a dullard like me would have any chance against a smart East/West Coast savant such as yourself?

Kelly Oubre: A Gambler? • Apr 10, 2015 04:35 AM

Yes...but not all of them have the skill set that Kelly has. He can shoot, he can defend and he can penetrate...now, he still needs lo learn to be ambidextrous and not just a leftie, but other than that, he has the rest of the tools; most of the D-Leaguers do not have the same skill set, in my opinion, of course.

Professional wrestling does not label itself as a sport but as entertainment and they freely admit that the plots are fabricated; you don't see anyone betting in Vegas on professional wrestling. College sports are predicated on being above board and billions of $ are wagered every year on the outcome of games.

When you quote Pitino you have to quote the entirety comment and he also said something along the lines of...obviously it is not a big deal since KU seems to get a fair share of top players...or words to that effect. Just sayin'...

I'm hearing Diallo to Kansas... • Apr 09, 2015 07:13 PM

@konkeyDong

I would not rule out Iowa State since they seem to be be the new favorite team for the analyst, much like Butler was few years back.. They are definitely on the up swing as a program and ranked anywhere from #2 to #5 in all the pre-season polls and Hoiberg gets an inordinate amount of good press. They do have a Greek footer that was red-shirting and will be eligible next season...so maybe this might have so bearing in the decision.

@5541-james

Is my perception wrong ?

Yes. There are many styles of play in the NBA and most are pretty fun to watch. Obviously we have (a bigger) emotional involvement and attachment to college teams and even when they play poorly, we still like to watch them play. I know there was talk that UK could beat an NBA team and those comments were obviously made by someone not familiar with the NBA; on a bad day, the worst NBA team would easily beat the best college team, anyone that watches the NBA and college basketball regularly know this.

@JRyman

If you think accountants are bad, you should read the work of the Global Warming advocates...they are perpetrating one of the bigger if not the biggest scam ever and making some people very wealthy in the process.

Cliff to Draft, But Whither Snacks? • Apr 09, 2015 06:44 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Oops...my bad, I did not read closely and I thought We were still talking about Snacks. In any case, this is from his bio at the KU web site; it looks like it might need updating...

"Kurtis Townsend enters his eighth season at the University of Kansas. Since his arrival in Lawrence, Townsend has been a part of the KU program which has won a national championship, reached three NCAA Tournament Elite Eights, four NCAA Sweet 16s, seven Big 12 regular-season titles and five conference tournament crowns. In summer 2010, Townsend was ranked 12th in the Top 25 High-Major Assistants by Foxsports.com."

@jaybate-1.0

Form his bio on Wikipedia...

"From 1969 to 1974, Krzyzewski served in the United States Army and directed service teams for three years. In 2005 he was presented West Point's Distinguished Graduate Award. Krzyzewski was discharged from active duty in 1974 and started his coaching career as an assistant on Knight's staff with the Indiana Hoosiers during their historic 1974–75 season. After one year with Indiana, Krzyzewski returned to West Point as head coach of the Army Cadets. He led the Cadets to a 73–59 record and one NIT berth in five seasons."

So...the short answer is that the was coaching basketball for the military and, if he went to Vietnam, it was likely with basketball team and not with a combat unit.

Cliff to Draft, But Whither Snacks? • Apr 09, 2015 06:17 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

As per his bio at the KU web site that I posted above...

"Known as one of the top recruiters in the nation, Jerrance Howard came to KU in May 2013. Two months later, Howard was ranked 12th among the top recruiting assistant coaches in NCAA Division I by ESPN.com in a survey of more than 200 head coaches."

The key word being "recruiting."

@jaybate-1.0

Ah...yes, but you left an important player, Under Armour, that now has a sizable share likely approaching Adidas and the up and coming Chinese companies that have started spending all that extra cash they have from actually making the shoes for the big 3.

From the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

"A team may have a maximum of 13 players on its active roster. At least eight players must suit up for every game. Any remaining players are placed in the Inactive List, and cannot play in games. Teams may have a maximum of two players on the Inactive List; this can drop to zero for up to two weeks at a time, and additional, temporary inactive positions may be added with league approval in hardship cases. The Inactive List can change up to 60 minutes before opening tip by informing the official scorer of the game. A player can be inactive for as little as one game. Players sent to the NBA Development League will continue to count on a team’s inactive list While individual teams must carry a minimum of 13 (12 active plus one inactive) players, the NBA guarantees a league-wide average of at least 14 players per team. The league is surcharged if they do not meet the average."

So, counting the required minimum average of 14 players there are at least 420 players in the NBA and since many teams carry more than 14 players, the number is likely higher.

The list below shows the Nike endorsers and I count 135 players or 33% of the available roster slots. Since many players are not really offered endorsement agreements but simply get free shoes, realistically, Nike's share is closer to 50% than 77% and likely will get smaller, not larger with the advent of the new players. The devil is in the details.

This is the list of the Nike endorsers...

I agree and I really can't imagine him as a HC at any major program...maybe JuCo? I bet Larry Brown is relieved he left, although if you read his bio at the the KU web site, ↗ you have to wonder, either who wrote it or what went wrong...

Cliff to Draft, But Whither Snacks? • Apr 09, 2015 05:15 PM

@ParisHawk

You have it exactly right. Snacks, as the coach that recruited Cliff was in fact the de facto "handler" and he failed at this on several levels. Given that apparently he is "more of a recruiter" than a coach and turned out not to be good at this either, what is the reason to keep him?

@jaybate-1.0

I have to disagree with you assessment of the influence of shoe companies in the NBA. NBA teams are NOT affiliated with any specific brand and the uniforms for the entire League are supplied by just one vendor, want to venture a guess who this firm is? ADIDAS. By the way, the profit is is so low that Adidas indicated it will not bid after the contract is over; the market for NBA branded apparel is small compared to college branded apparel.

With unis out of the way, the only thing left to endorse is shoes and players do that individually. Do you really think Wiggins was traded to the Wolves because he endorses Adidas? No. He was traded there because he plays essentially the same position as LeBron and what the Cavaliers really needed was a big time "big' and Love was the best available...does not look like it is working well for them by the way; Love's numbers are way down, the chemistry is not there and there have been PDDs, Public Displays of Disaffection, such as Love stating in an interview that Curry and not teammate LeBron should be the MVP and Lebron has publicly called on Love to "be' a part of the team; obviously the honeymoon is over and it would not surprise me at all to see Love move to a different team after the season is over...of course a Championship could change things.

As far as Perry and as I posted before, I am not too worried about this. Most players, even those with remote NBA potential routinely file that request for information and most end up staying in school. If he is projected as a 1st round next year, then he is eligible for the NCAA sponsored insurance program and that might be the real reason for the request. I understand his family is very education oriented and if he can graduate in May, which is distinct possibility given that he is an outstanding student, then it would be more feasible.

BTW, here is a list of the Adidas players in the NBA...not too shabby...

Oops. I had a whole paragraph for Graham that somehow I forgot to include, but basically I said what you did and although he disappeared on a few games, he played remarkably well for freshman, and as I mentioned before,when you looks the outside shooters that saw significant playing time, he is the only one that can actually create his own shot...something that was sorely needed from the other players.

Cliff to Draft, But Whither Snacks? • Apr 09, 2015 05:48 AM

@ralster

A couple of items, Capel did not leave OU, he was fired and went to the only place that would take him at the time, Duke; apparently he was recently being considered for the Arizona State HC job and decided to stay at Duke, likely hoping to one day inherit the HC position when rat face retires.

At one time, coaches and assistants were hired to actually coach and recruiting was something they grudgingly did because it interfered with their primary role. Now, some assistant are hired almost uniquely because their recruiting skills (i.e. Snacks) and coaching is secondary...a really bad development both for the players and the sport at large.

Kelly Oubre: A Gambler? • Apr 09, 2015 05:19 AM

@truehawk93

With all due respect, I am not sure I follow your logic. The NBA is just like any other business and will pick the players that it feels will do the best job and they really do not "owe" anything to a student/athlete just because he stayed an extra year or two in school, wouldn't you agree? The NBA is in business to make money and this implies putting out a good product that will sell and normally this means winning games; like any other business, they will select the players, or assets as you call them, that will help them win games. It really is that simple, every for profit business in America operates this way.

Like any other job out there, a place in the NBA is something you earn and not something you are entitled to and the employer has an expectation that you will perform and just like any other employer out there, if you are not up to the task, you will lose your job or you will not get one in the first place.

Again, I mean no disrespect, but as a business owner perhaps I have a different view on the subject and I have no tolerance for the ever growing number of people in today's society that have a sense of entitlement and feel a job is owned to them and they don't have to earn it. I would venture to say that every person that has ever owned a business and has hired employees feels the same way.

240 lbs of Recruiting Space Opened.... • Apr 08, 2015 06:08 PM

From the SBNation site:

According to Greek sports network sdna.gr, Arizona is one of many schools in the mix to land skilled 7-footer Georgios Papagiannis. UConn, Kentucky, St. John's and Temple have also shown recent interest in the center.

Papagiannis signed a multi-year deal to play with Panathinaikos' 18 to 22 year old team in Greece, but reportedly has the ability to come back to the United States if he so chooses. Papagiannis played at Westtown School in Pennsylvania before he decided to head back to Greece, and the opportunity to showcase himself for the NBA could be enough to convince him to come back.

247Sports.com listed Papagiannis as the 34th best player in the class of 2015, and the 7th best center in the class of 2015.

Papagiannis is considered to be a highly skilled big man that is a good passer, solid rebounder, and has the ability to score in the post as well stretch the floor with an impressive outside stroke for a player his size. His length also allows him to block and challenge shots at this rim.

It is unclear if Papagiannis plans to even enroll in college or stay in Greece at this point, but he's definitely one to keep an eye on. Coming out of high school, Papagiannis received offers from Kansas, Penn State, Maryland, and Temple. He also took unofficial visits to Penn State and Maryland. Clearly Sean Miller will have plenty of competition to land the big man if Papagiannis decides to play college basketball.

Maybe he is just the player KU needs...and apparently KU has already offered.

@nuleafjhawk

...indeed, with diamond encrusted gold grill :)

@jaybate-1.0

Whine away my friend, whine away.

How bad was the refereeing that we, KU fans, are talking about a game or games in which KU was not even involved? Pretty bad.

@HighEliteMajor

I believe I mentioned this before since it is one of my favorite quotes...whats is the difference between a good player and a great player? CONSISTENCY!!!

Think of all the great players in basketball and you will see that the one thing they have in common is that they have consistently performed well, from game to game and from season to season. So many players with one or two great season and then nothing or players that had one or two 40-50 point games and then back to mediocrity...good but not great.

This season, KU had two players that had performed consistently well. We will probably agree on the first, Mason, who showed up just about every time and the second, which you may or may a not agree, Ellis, who did have a few games when he disappeared but by and large he played consistently well and was KU's best player while Mason was unquestionably the MVP.

The rest, Selden, Green, Traylor, Alexander, Svi, Lucas had at time great games, but more often than not, had par or sub-par performances with Oubre somewhere in between. All the players I mentioned have the talent to be great, but they need to develop consistency; the "B" game will not cut it, they need to bring their "A" game every time and develop the consistently that will move them, and by extension the team, to the next level.

@nuleafjhawk

How the times have changed. I bet none of those players had as a final goal to go to the NBA but to get a degree. Nowadays, college is just a steppingstone to the NBA; unfortunately for better or worse...this is reality.

Self: "We've got to call fouls." • Apr 08, 2015 04:26 PM

The NCAA has spent an inordinate amount of time changing the rules and very little time in coming up with the proper procedures for implementing them. The implementation of the new contact rules, or as I call them the f%@g Bilas rules, which starting last year is was a royal F-Up, with very uneven implementation and defense minded teams like KU getting heavily penalized. Instead of changing more rules, the NCAA need to concentrate in making sure that the current rules are enforced evenly across conferences and teams. I cannot recall (correct me if I am wrong) when there was as much talk about bad refereeing as there had been in this tournament, Wisconsin is fully justified being POd since it was particularly and overwhelmingly affected by bad calls.

If this issue is not addressed, college basketball will become what boxing was a one time, a collection of rigged fights and a completely discredited sport...and if it continues, how soon before Congress gets involved and finishes screwing up the sport even more?

240 lbs of Recruiting Space Opened.... • Apr 08, 2015 04:03 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Maybe it is time to think outside the box. Coach Self will be looking at some of the best young non-American player in the world at the University Games this summer and maybe he can find another Rudy Gobert type player that needs a year or two before moving to the NBA and get him to KU. In my opinion, if we can get one capable big, not Ellis-Traylor "big" but a 6'-11" 250lb player that can contribute immediately, the we will be in pretty decent shape. Mike Thorne is a possibility but he averaged 10-7 in the weak conference USA and he will not get nearly as much playing time in tough Big 12 so he would be maybe a 6-4 player at best...a band aid solution...but maybe better than nothing considering that there are scholarships available and he could always turn out to be another Tarik Black.

P.S. For those not familiar with Rudy Gobert, he is a 7'-2" French player that now plays for the Utah Jazz and has turned to be pretty darn good.
