Cha-ching

According to Real GM, Wiggins will receive $14,393,600 during the first three years of his pro career, with years 3-5 being option years. That includes a whopping $4.59 million for the 2014-15 season.

As for Embiid, he’ll receive $11,567,300 during that same time frame, with his rookie year netting him $3.6 million.

I'm so happy for the entire Spurs organization. Kawhi was the well deserved MVP. All of the players have carried themselves with such poise, grace and just doing what was asked of them and more. Timmy is the first player to win a championship in 3 decades. San Antonio fans were all class. They stuck with their team during the painful start and supported them throughout the whole season.

Coaches Self and Howard were there. Link to Howard's Instragram.

I'm most looking forward to Cliff's "edge" he will be bringing to the game. We can definitely use a strong emphasis on finishing at the rim.

While I will always have a tremendous amount of love for Mario, that was a very cheap shot to Tony P. I've been a long time fan of the Spurs, going back to when David Robinson stepped aside for Timmy. Being in Austin, the Spurs were the team to follow. Plus we have their farm team here in Austin (The Toros). I never liked the Mavs due to Cuban. Granted, the Spurs missed 4 straight free throws and didn't capitalize when they were up by 11 and missed several shots down the stretch. The officiating was not consistent at all. Hope all 3 don't get any more games. Spurs will need to get one back in Miami.

I know there has been conversation before about "the Bird Man." I am just so put off by him.

Go Spurs Go!

P.S. to @drgnslayr and @crimsonorblue22 - I've been enjoying my tomatoes out of our garden and green beans every night. I've taken tomatoes to the local old folks home and heard many stories from them about when they used to garden. Was a real good feeling doing something for them. Brought lots of smiles to their faces. :-)

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, one of the most intriguing European prospects to come along since Ricky Rubio, has decided that he will head to Kansas for at least two seasons.

“Obviously, this is great news for us,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said in a release announcing the commitment. “He is 16 years old and will turn 17 in June, but his skill level, knowledge and aptitude for the game are way beyond his years.”

Mykhailiuk is a 6-foot-8 wing who is still just 16 years old. He played at the Nike Hoop Summit in April and was the youngest player in the history of the event. A native of Ukraine, Mykhailiuk played big minutes in the Ukranian professional league this past season. But he never signed a contract specifically in order to retain his collegiate eligibility.

The plan is for Mykhailiuk to spend two seasons at Kansas before entering the NBA Draft, as that’s how long it would take for him to be 19 years old and eligible to declare.

“I liked everything [about Kansas],” Mykhailiuk said in the release. “From the history, the strength program and especially the coaches – everything. It’s Kansas. KU has players every year. Coach Self has had so many players go to the NBA. That’s an important thing.”

Mykhailiuk’s an above average athlete whose strength is in his ability to shoot the ball. He’s a capable passer and can jump passing lanes defensively, but he still needs to add some strength to better finish around the basket and be a more capable defender. That’s understandable, however. In Ukraine, high schoolers graduate at the equivalent of what is 11th grade here.

“He is a guy that can play all three positions on the perimeter,” Self said. “He allows us to be more versatile next year and certainly, there would be few people that would shoot it better than him.”

According to an NBA scout that has seen Mykhailiuk play, if he was in the Class of 2015 or 2016, which is likely where he would be classified if he played high school ball in the states, he would be a top ten recruit. He compared him to Nik Stasukas.

Mykhailiuk joins a loaded perimeter attack for the Jayhawks, as he’ll likely be stuck behind Kelly Oubre, Wayne Selden and Brannen Greene.

The NCAA has denied Baylor’s request for a sixth year of eligibility for marksman Brady Heslip, who made 301 three-pointers and shot 43.7 percent from beyond the arc during his three years with the Bears.

Heslip redshirted at Boston College in 2009-10 and sat out the following season after transferring to Baylor. Rather than appeal the NCAA’s decision, Heslip will sign with an agent and pursue a professional career.

Do you think S. Drew was desperate to attempt this?

Ben McLemore back in Lawrence to continue work on degree, NBA game

By RUSTIN DODD
Kansas City Star

There are many frustrating things about being an NBA rookie, the least of which is the creative hazing. Ben McLemore spent part of his first season in Sacramento with a pink backpack slung around his shoulder — the roundish, cutesy logo on full display.

“Hello Kitty,” McLemore says.

But the worst part about being a rookie, of course, is that the veterans rarely listen to what you’re saying. Let McLemore explain. So during the final weeks of the NBA regular season, he began to tell some Kings teammates that he was headed back to Kansas for the summer. The reaction, McLemore says, was often one of confusion or apathy.

Ben is going to spend the summer hanging out in Kansas? OK.

“No,” McLemore would tell them. “I’m going back to work on my classes and get my degree.”

On Thursday afternoon, McLemore pushed through the doors of Allen Fieldhouse and stepped on the floor for a workout with a member of the Sacramento Kings player development staff. Just one year after leaving KU after a record-breaking freshman season, McLemore plans to spend the summer back here in Lawrence, working on his game and pecking away at the hours he needs to graduate.

It will be an uphill battle, one that could take a few years. Even when you add in the hours he took during his redshirt freshman season in 2011-12, McLemore estimates he’s still close to 48 hours short of graduation.

So you might say this sounds like an unnecessary time investment. McLemore made $2.89 million as a rookie, and will make millions more in the next couple years. But for McLemore, the former All-Big 12 standout, the decision is as symbolic as it is practical.

When McLemore arrived at Kansas in 2011, he was deemed a partial qualifier — unable to play in games for an entire year. Nearly three years later, he’d like to show how far he’s come.

“I think it’s very important for me,” McLemore says. “For anybody to get their degree, especially a college degree. And also, it’ll put a big smile on my mom’s face.”

McLemore also believes he can use the quiet Lawrence summer to his advantage. He’s rented a townhome here. He’s still trying to figure out a specific major; spending just two years left him some options. He’ll bond with some old teammates, and he’ll scrimmage some of the younger Jayhawks.

His rookie campaign was solid, of course, but mostly incomplete for a top-10 pick. But still just three years removed from his senior year of high school, McLemore has time to meet expectations and scrape toward his ceiling.

“It definitely was harder,” McLemore says of the NBA transition. “But at the same time, the guy I am, I like to work hard and learn. And I wanted to learn the game and just get better.”

After falling to No. 7 in last year’s NBA Draft, McLemore averaged 8.8 points and 2.9 rebounds while averaging 27 minutes per game for the rebuilding Kings, who finished 28-54. There were plenty of “Welcome to the NBA” moments — nights guarding All-Star shooting guards, long road trips, teammates shuffling in and out of the roster.

By the end of the season, McLemore estimates that he and fellow rookie Ray McCallum had played with 13 new teammates.

“It’s definitely a business,” McLemore says. “That’s one thing I learned going into the NBA. As soon as I got there, there were guys just leaving, instantly.”

If that didn’t hit home, it certainly did in February. Kings general manager Pete D’Alessandro had to publically squash rumors that McLemore was being dangled in trade talks involving the Boston Celtics.

“I’m standing here today and I’m saying Ben McLemore is a guy that we have not put in deals,” D’Alessandro told reporters then. “He’s a guy that we love here.”

McLemore finished the season on a high, scoring 31 points with five rebounds in a season-finale loss to Phoenix. He averaged nearly 14 points per game in the month of March, and D’Alessandro reiterated that McLemore is part of the Kings future.

But his first taste of the NBA left McLemore with some pretty clear thoughts. For one, he needs to improve his game. His ballhandling needs some maintenance; his play-making ability does, too.

“The things I needed to work on at the University of Kansas are the same things I need to work on in the NBA,” McLemore said. “Everybody is a lot faster, stronger … everybody all the way down to the bench can play.”

On Thursday, McLemore pounded a halfway inflated ball into the ground during a drill, working on his touch and feel. As he began to sweat, the lights reflected off the empty bleachers inside Allen Fieldhouse. It’s probably safe to say that a lot of people would enjoy going back to college for a summer. McLemore is one of those people, at least, and this is where he wants to be for the next three months.

“A lot of people wait until two years before they try to go back, and it’s too late.” McLemore says. “It makes it even harder to do. I have this opportunity to do it.”

Kamari Murphy’s transfer another blow to a sputtering OK State program

Rob Dauster May 8, 2014, 10:15 AM EDT

Oklahoma State has lost another key piece from last season’s team as Kamari Murphy has decided to transfer out of the program, according to multiple media reports.

As a sophomore this past season, Murphy averaged 6.1 points and 6.3 boards. He became a starter when Michael Cobbins went down with a torn achilles.

Of the eight players that Oklahoma State had in their rotation at the start of the 2013-2014 season, five of them are now gone and four left with eligibility remaining: Murphy and Brian Williams transferred, Marcus Smart went pro, Stevie Clark was kicked out of the program in December and Markel Brown graduated. That list doesn’t include Jared Terrell, either. Terrell was the crown jewel of Ford’s 2014 recruiting class but he got out of his letter of intent last month.

That leaves Travis Ford with a roster that is going to be dreadfully thin once again.

The good news? He does return Le’Bryan Nash for what should be a big senior season, and Cobbins and Phil Forte should be back as well. Add in a five-man recruiting class — headlined by JuCo transfer Jeff Newberry — and the cupboard isn’t completely bare, but it’s still hard to see how Ford is going to be able to get this team into the NCAA tournament.

Which brings us back to a point that was brought up by Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman back when the Pokes were bounced from the NCAA tournament in their first game: Travis Ford’s contract is a doozy. The school signed him to a 10-year deal back in 2009, meaning that Ford still has five years and almost $12 million coming to him.

The most important note?

The school has no buy out.

If they want Ford out, they have to pay him the remainder of his salary, and I’m not sure even T. Boone Pickens is willing to shell out that kind of cash for basketball.

It’s no wonder that the Cowboys can no longer fill up Gallagher-Iba Arena. They have a head coach that the fans hate, that couldn’t get the Pokes out of the opening round of the NCAA tournament despite having two seasons with Smart, Nash and Brown on the roster, and it doesn’t look like it will get any better anytime soon.

Ford’s always been able to recruit, but it will be interesting to see if players still want to join a program that’s clearly not in a good place these days.

I heard this on the pre-game of the Spurs-Blazers game.

**The Trail Blazers were snake bit from the start — almost literally. When the Trail Blazers got to the AT&T Center there was a rattlesnake in Thomas Robinson’s locker, causing some grown men to freak out.

There apparently has been a lot of construction around the AT&T Center where the Spurs play. This brought back the bat flying around the arena last year when Manu Ginobli caught it and had to go through the month long rabie shots.

KU has the most players of any school with former players in the NBA playoffs. We have 5. Can you name them all?

AND ANOTHER THING:

KU’s Bill Self gets it right, this time in the classroom

By YAEL T. ABOUHALKAH The Kansas City Star
Updated: 2014-May 8

University of Kansas basketball fans were disappointed when head coach Bill Self’s Jayhawks didn’t advance nearly as far in this year’s NCAA tournament as hoped.

Give KU coach Bill Self some props for the off-court accomplishments of his players.

And I got in a little hot water with KU fans for saying Self had acted like a $5 million-a-year spoilsport for his disappointing behavior after KU in March clinched its 10th straight Big 12 title.

But give Self, his staff and his players some credit where it’s supposed to count, too: in the classroom.

The Star reports today that Self’s program, for the seventh straight year, has earned a top honor from the NCAA.

It’s the Public Recognition Award, which recognizes a high level of academic progress by players, placing them in the top 10 percent of programs around the nation.

“Kansas was one of 40 NCAA Division I men’s basketball programs to achieve the honor. The streak of seven straight is matched by just 12 other Division I teams,” The Star reported.

Self’s defenders constantly say that he does most things the right way. He attracts top talent to the university, he coaches them with strong discipline, his team wins a lot more than it loses and — to top it off — he makes sure they go to class.

In a day and age when the term “student-athlete” is mocked more than ever by the actions of too many players, coaches and athletic administrators, this accomplishment at KU by Self and his team deserves attention.

Media poll: Allen Field House best venue for college hoops

Posted on May 7, 2014

Athlon Sports asked a dozen college basketball media members—including writers, broadcasters and former players—to rank their 10 favorite hoops venues, and, to the surprise of no Jayhawks anywhere, Allen Field House came out on top.

Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium was a close second, yet, while Allen and Cameron far outpaced the rest of the field and were the only two arenas named on all 12 ballots, KU’s hoops haven scored nine first-place votes compared with one each for Cameron Indoor, Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse and New York City’s Madison Square Garden (home court for St. John’s University).

Picking Allen Field House No. 1 were ESPN’s Jay Bilas (a four-year starter at Duke), Fran Fraschilla, Jeff Goodman and Dave LaMont; Bleacher Report’s Jason King, former KU beat writer for the Kansas City Star; Mike DeCourcy, of The Sporting News; Eric Prisbell, of USA Today; Rob Dauster, of College Basketball Talk; and Dick Weiss, BlueStar Media.

Pat Forde, of Yahoo Sports, was the only voter to rank Allen Field House lower than No. 2, placing it fourth behind Hinkle Fieldhouse, Cameron Indoor and Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center.

Tarik - NFL? • May 02, 2014 11:40 AM

Wish only the best for Tarik and hope something can come of this.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers might have jump-started NFL career of Kansas basketball player Tarik Black.

Eric Adelson
By Eric Adelson 8 hours ago Yahoo Sports

Aaron Rodgers is always keeping an eye out for football talent, even when he's at basketball games.

It started at the airport.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers ran into Kansas basketball coach Bill Self last year and got himself invited to a game.

Rodgers came to Lawrence in January, gave a pep talk to the Jayhawks, and met the players.

Tarik Black, a forward in his senior season, picks up the tale from there:

"Green Bay is my favorite team. I told him, 'Hey, I understand you're hurt; we need you healthy. We need a championship.' Then he says, 'You should help me win it. Come play some tight end.' So I say, 'Give me a contract and make it happen.' "

Black thought the whole interchange was a joke.

Apparently Rodgers did not.

The Packers passer went to Self and said, "I want to throw balls at him and see what he can do." And considering Black is 6-foot-9, 260 pounds, and had more than one foul for every two points last season, that made sense. (The Kansas bio calls him "a bruising forward.")

It all just shocked Black.

"One of the guys in our media department said, 'Aaron Rodgers likes you. Likes you a lot,'" he recalls.

Black laughed it off. Then he heard this:

"No, he really likes you. He wants you to try out for Green Bay."

It still didn't register. Even when Black was handed Rodgers' cell phone number, he refused to text the former MVP for a month. "I didn't know what to say," he explains. Black's roommate had to nudge him into it. Finally he composed a message:

"Just wanted to see if you were serious," Black wrote.

"I'm definitely interested," Rodgers wrote back. "If there's something I can do, let me know."

Soon, Black was on the phone with a Packers scout, and still bewildered by the whole episode.

Adding to the bewilderment was this little factoid about Tarik Black: he has no football experience.

"Zero," says his new agent, Chad Wiestling.

Black gets the slightest bit defensive when asked about his football background.

"I plead the Fifth," he says.

He did play some growing up in Memphis, but never in pads.

"I know what an out route is," Black says. "But certain terms I'd be like, 'Huh?'"

That hasn't stopped the intrigue. There has been an intense pursuit of converted basketball players ever since Antonio Gates became one of the best tight ends in NFL history. Jimmy Graham has emerged as a star for the Saints and Julius Thomas played in the Super Bowl in February. Now Black has been scouted by Aaron Rodgers.

Both Black and Wiestling say three NFL teams have expressed interest. One unnamed team, in fact, showed its zeal by asking the NBA team in the city it shares to reach out to Wiestling for Black's number. His agency actually got a call from an NBA team on behalf of an NFL team.

"Pretty cool, pretty cool," says Black.

So what does this mean? It's unlikely Black gets drafted next week but it is possible he gets invited to a rookie minicamp. If that happens, Black says he would lean toward going. There is, however, another sport with a draft this summer.

"Basketball is my love," Black says. "I'm definitely going to put effort into making basketball my life. But an opportunity presented itself and I want that opportunity to hold."

Even if he has to settle for chasing only one of his one-in-a-million dreams, Black still has the phone number of his favorite player on his favorite team. That's something.

"It'll be cool to text Aaron Rodgers," he says.

For Real Though, We Need To Talk About Thomas Robinson's Block

Tom Ley

I, like most basketball fans, have been thinking about last night's game between the Rockets and Blazers pretty much all day. But out of all the amazing shit that happened in that game—Wes Matthews torpedoing the ball and the win out of Patrick Beverley's hands; that brief stretch when Nic Batum, Damian Lillard, and James Harden turned the court into a playground; Jeremy Lin's Viking funeral—I keep coming back to this block by Thomas Robinson.

Holy ####, this block, man. It's hard to imagine a more perfect conception of the phrase "stuffed at the rim." Howard could not have been any closer to scoring without stuffing both his arms straight through the rim, and Robinson arrived at the last possible millisecond to turn what should have been a highlight-reel alley-oop into a thunderclap of a block.

And this isn't the first time Robinson has done something like this. You may recall him pulling off the block of the regular season back in February. Here's hoping he keeps finding minutes and blocking the #### out of people, for all our sakes.

Last Myles Turner Comments • Apr 29, 2014 11:17 AM

@DoubleDD Who wouldn't want to get their name in the record books for having kept the streak alive and win an 11th straight conference title? He knows what abilities Cliff and Kelly have. Who on UT can compare to them? And his playing time at UT will be an issue, since they count so much on Ridley and Ibeh.

No one goes to UT games unless it is the Jayhawks playing there. He can play in front of a sold out AFH every game.

Talk here in Austin is that they really need him for their program. But as other have stated, why would he wait this long to announce if UT was his choice. I saw a tweet of his after it was claimed he said he "could go down there and have an impact like KD did" and he was not happy that people were taking things he said out of context.

We'll know tomorrow at 3 PM. I PRAY there are no hats involved. :-)

Larry Jacobson

College Career
•1971 Outland Award Winner
•1971 First Team All-American
•1971 First Team All-Big Eight
•Member of 2 National Championship Teams [1970-71]
•Jersey (#75) retired by school
•Inducted into Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1994

After College

•Selected in the 1st Round (24th overall) of the 1972 NFL Draft (New York Giants)
•Played in NFL (1972-74) with New York Giants

A standout on Nebraska's 1970 and 1971 national championship teams, Larry Jacobson became Nebraska's first major award winner, capturing the Outland Trophy following his senior season. Jacobson became the first of seven Huskers to win eight Outland trophies, symbolic of the nation's top interior lineman.

Jacobson's No. 75 was retired along with Trev Alberts' No. 34 and Will Shield's No. 75 at the 1994 Spring Game, marking the only time in school history that three jerseys were retired at the same time.

As a senior, Jacobson recorded 73 tackles , including 28 solos, and added 12 tackles for 73 yards lost and an interception en route to earning All-Big Eight and All-America honors. One of two All-Americans (along with Rich Glover) on the Husker defensive line in 1971, Jacobson helped the Blackshirts to top-five national rankings in rush defense (85.9, second), total defense (202.9, fifth) and scoring defense (8.2, third) en route to a 13-0 record and a second straight national title. He also was lauded for his efforts in the classroom, earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors following his senior campaign.

Jacobson broke onto the national scene during his junior season, helping the Huskers to their first national title. The 6-foot-6 inch, 250-pound, Sioux Falls, S.D., native finished with 49 tackles, including 33 solos, nine tackles for 61 yards lost and a team-best three fumble recoveries.

One of three Huskers selected in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft, Jacobson was a first-round selection (No. 24 overall) by the New York Giants. He played with the Giants for four seasons before retiring following the 1975 campaign.

In December of 2012, Jacobson received the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, which recognizes outstanding college players from the past 40 years.

Why five-star recruit Myles Turner should not choose Texas

Myles Turner, a five-star recruit in the class of 2014, has his college choices down to seven school, which includes Texas.

Published on April 23, 2014 at 12:05 amLast update on April 23, 2014 at 12:09 am
By Evan Berkowitz

Basketball fans dream about walking through the tunnels at Allen Fieldhouse or hitting a buzzer-beater against North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

But not many imagine hitting a game-winning shot at the Frank Erwin Center.

So why would Myles Turner, the lone uncommitted five-star recruit in the 2014 class, choose to attend Texas?

The 6-foot-10 high school senior, who attends Trinity High School, could potentially transform whatever school he chooses to attend into a legitimate championship contender. He can knock down jumpers, dominate inside and protect the rim.

Seven schools are still chasing him: Duke, Kansas, SMU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Texas.

Some reports have Turner leaning toward Texas — he even tweeted admiration of the school last week. But if I were Turner, I would take the nod of recent Texas high school greats and spurn the Longhorns.

Kentucky’s Julius Randle, Baylor’s Isaiah Austin and class of 2014 five-star recruit and SMU committ Emmanual Mudiay all chose other schools.

Here are a few reasons why.

The Atmosphere

No matter how successful the basketball program is for Texas, it isn’t football.

Longhorn fans aren’t the most passionate about basketball. Fans don’t show up for nonconference game, and only games against Oklahoma and Kansas seem to get fans on their feet.

The Erwin Center is devoid of a deafening atmosphere. Even if the crowd is relatively large, seats almost always look empty because of the size of the building.

Wouldn’t Turner rather play at Allen Fieldhouse, the place ESPN ranked as the loudest stadium in college basketball?

Heck, even SMU’s newly renovated Moody Coliseum offers a better basketball experience than the Erwin Center.

The Spotlight

Texas basketball doesn’t get a lot of attention around Austin.

Even though the team was ranked in the top 20 this past season, the only thing Longhorn fans could pay attention to was the beginning of new football head coach Charlie Strong’s program. Part of this is attributable to the Big 12 Conference itself, as it’s not too flashy. The Big 12 is deep, and one could even make the case that it was the best conference last year. But only Kansas was really ever a championship contender.

The ACC, Big 10 and even the AAC had more weeks in the top 10 than the Big 12. While the No. 20 and No. 21 teams matching up is a good game, the country will always pay more attention to perennial top-5 teams. If Turner went to Duke or Ohio State, he would have more high-profile games to boost his stock.

COACHING

Rick Barnes is a good coach. But would people rather play for him than Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Kansas’ Bill Self or SMU’s Larry Brown? Turner will likely turn pro after one year, and, while talented, his game is in need of considerable molding. Barnes is not the best man to do that. Krzyzewski, Self and Brown all have considerable experience preparing players for the NBA.

Close proximity to home and following the path of his favorite player Kevin Durant are compelling reasons for Turner to attend Texas. But, with the wealth of experience he could gain elsewhere, are the Longhorns really the best place for Turner to play in college?

Born in Sioux Falls, So. Dakota, moved to Bloomington, MN at age 5 and lived there until 5th grade. Because they closed down Ft. Snelling, my dad became the Comptroller of Ft. Leavenworth (not in the military - civil service) so we were forced to live in Leavenworth!! It was then and there that I became a Jayhawker for life. My 4 older brothers all went to and graduated from KU but when it came time for me once I graduated high school in 1973, I instead went to work for an attorney there in LV and took paralegal training. In 1979 my husband had a friend he knew from going to school in Pittsburg, KS framing houses here in Austin and we came down here to check it out, saw the little city it was then and moved here 2 months later. So 41 years later I'm still working with an attorney in Austin, TX (32 with the same one). Today being Administrative Assistant's Day, all us staff are being treated to lunch at a real swanky place that looks down into where they film the Austin City Limits.

Keepin' It Weird.

CONGRATS COACH SELF! • Apr 15, 2014 11:57 AM

Kansas University’s Bill Self on Monday received the Wayman Tisdale Humanitarian Award at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards in Oklahoma City.

The award, produced by Access Sports in conjunction with the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, honors “an individual involved in college basketball who has had a significant positive impact off the court as well as on.”

Previous honorees include Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and ESPN’s Dick Vitale.

The award’s namesake, former University of Oklahoma standout Wayman Tisdale, died in May 2009 after a battle with cancer. Self, who was a high school standout in Edmond, Okla., played on the same AAU basketball team as Tisdale, a phenom from Tulsa.

“I’m overwhelmed and humbled to have a chance to receive an award with his name on it, especially since I knew him growing up,” said Self, who like Tisdale was a member of the Oklahoma Rams AAU program. “Wayman Tisdale basically put Oklahoma basketball on the map. He created an interest level that spurred a lot of interest in a lot of good (high school, AAU) players that have come out of Oklahoma. I don’t think there’s anybody more contagious — his enthusiasm and energy — than what I saw with him. He was one-of-a-kind.”

Other Oklahoma Rams alumni include Prince Bridges, Leroy Combs, Richard Dumas, Byron Houston, Darryl (Choo) Kennedy, Stacey King, Tracy Moore and Mark and Brent Price.

“My first trip with Wayman ... we had 15 people on a 15-passenger van, which doesn’t seem like it would be that crowded except we were going from Oklahoma City to Las Vegas, and a 26-hour van trip didn’t really bode well,” Self recalled. “But I just remember this big ol’ dude, because there was nowhere for him to put his legs. He had to drape his legs over my shoulder, and I’m in the seat in front of him, and I’m saying, ‘Who is this dude?’

“That first game that we played, I had 26 points, he had two, and I’m thinking, ‘I’m going to start getting recruited.’ Not one coach spoke to me, and Wayman had a wedding-reception line waiting to say, ‘Hey, great game, Wayman.’ I knew then what the difference was between potential and actually having one decent game against bad competition,” Self added, laughing.

Self said the 6-foot-9 Tisdale, who was three-time Big Eight Conference player of the year and three-time first-team All-American, “was a special guy. Nobody lit up a room more than him. He changed the mood of a building, let alone a room. I mean, he probably had as much personality and as much charisma as anybody that I’ve been around, period, and certainly did more for our sport where I’m from than anybody ever has. And even people that met him later on in life when he was doing his music (he recorded eight albums), they all felt the same way.”

Self was honored Monday for his work with his own Assists Foundation, as well as work with Coaches Vs. Cancer and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

“When you look at Bill Self’s record on the court and combine that with what he does off the court in the community and with his players, you see the very essence of what the Wayman Tisdale Humanitarian Award stands for,” said David Gillikin, Chairman of the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards. “We are very pleased to be able to recognize coach Self and his accomplishments with this prestigious award.”

Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall received the Coach of the Year Award Monday and Creighton’s Doug McDermott player of the year. Duke’s Jabari Parker was top freshman.

What do we think of our OADs? • Apr 11, 2014 11:33 AM

The Decorah Eagles I've been watching for the past 3 years do a OAD every year. OAD for them starts with the laying of the eggs (recruit signing), total dependency on being feed (learning the Self system) to feeding themselves (playing) and finally fledgling (first flight) where the eaglets learn enough to go out and survive in the world on their own. Mom and Dad Eagles provide for them in such a caring way.

It is fascinating watching how fast they go from total dependency to being able to feed themselves.

@brooksmd This was on the "other" site this morning.

Brewster guard on KU radar: Rivals.com reports that KU coach Self will head to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., on Friday to watch point guard Devonte Graham, a 6-2 senior who is trying to get out of his letter-of-intent with Appalachian State. No coach can speak with Graham until he is released from his letter, but coaches can watch him play. Reports indicate new Appy State coach Jim Fox will make the call on whether the school issues a release to Graham. Currently unranked, Graham will wind up in Rivals.com’s top 150, analyst Eric Bossi reports.
