So the bad d foul was by zuby?
@BeddieKU23 my bad.
Gradey always trying.
@Crimsonorblue22 KJ has two for sure.
@Crimsonorblue22 2 each?
Zuby sighting.
Two quickies on KJ. the first was tough. Second was bad d
No idea what that call was.
That should be 3 assists for him if we talk about getting a guy a good look.
Kj is dominating. Scoring passing tough d.
Press us. I dare you.
Coulda been an and1 for Jalen.
Defensive energy has been up and down the first few possessions. Lots of good but that dunk felt like 5 guys standing around watching the other team play offense.
@Crimsonorblue22 maybe the rest all got invited to the party…
Lots of good looks for Gradey. Keep shooting young fella.
TCU honestly looking a bit like us. When they turn up the d and get out in transition they look like world beaters but have shown they can go stretches where they struggle to score. (Allowing UT to comeback last game)
@Crimsonorblue22 Ah yes. Why would anyone want to watch KU play K State in Allen Field House? I'd be curious to know how many top 15 matchups don't get ESPN, ESPN2 or CBS coverage this year. Have there been any already?
@Crimsonorblue22 I didn't see what was on there but just the fact that we've been banished to ESPN+ with the bad announcers, unreliable feed and crew, etc...
@BeddieKU23 KJ especially is so aggressive on drives and attacking the hoop it's either foul him or get dunked on. Feels like Jalen drives hard to but doesn't seem to get many calls.
Who is Zion Taylor? Just saw he is coming to KU.
LSU/Alabama and Virginia/Florida State get ESPN and ESPN2
How is this game with all this hooplah going to be on ESPN+? 125 year celebration of the winningest mens college basketball program on a saturday afternoon with the sun shining in the windows and a top 25 opponent and we get ESPN+??? Mistakes were made.
@drgnslayr I do think it's possible to get that punch in the mouth while still winning games. It's all about the mentality that comes from it. If our guys continue to think, "hey we can win any game as long as we turn up the heat late in the game" we will probably not improve. But if they come out and say, "hey, we should never be down 10 in our own building again, we have to find that switch at the start of the game and work to never turn it off" well then we might be on to something.
I know folks doubted Jaybate when he talked about the full amp vs. no amp games, but I do think there's something to that interpretation. Self said about this game that KU basically didn't run any offense the whole game. Who decides what offense to run? Is that on Juan and Wilson? Isn't Self supposed to be getting us into sets as we bring the ball up? Did he not have their attention? ORRRRRR..... Did Self intentionally send the guys out there without much of a game plan? Did he hold some wrinkles close to the chest to use in this tough stretch or against OU in Norman? And if the guys sense Coach isn't putting his all into winning this game, there's a natural let down energy wise for them as well. I don't know. Seems like there could be something to all of that. Obviously I don't know and likely never will as Self would be stupid to even hint that something like that may be the case.
As far as Gradey, not sure he has the conditioning to go Steph Curry on the Big 12 this year. There was lots of talk early in the year about Gradey being tired late in games, or playing too many minutes, etc. So there may be some hesitation to run him all over the court in a game against what is likely a team in the bottom half of the league in Allen when ISU and KSU are on the horizon.
I haven't paid enough attention to know but it would be interesting to see how well whoever is guarding Gradey scores on a given night. Like, is guarding Gradey going to take a few points per game off whoever gets that assignment? I'd be curious. Not curious enough to look it up and figure it out myself though...
The good thing about this team is they don't seem to get too flustered by overly physical play. Yeah they missed a bunch of bunnies this game but I don't see that being a trend yet. They still got to their spots, got good looks, and even won the dang game!
It's possible that Tennessee roughing us up might have toughened some of these guys and brought them together a bit. We will see if they need another reminder as the season goes on. I know I'd rather not come from double digits down every game, but maybe that's just a personal preference.

We'll see, I think their depth is suspect as we go forward into conference play. They have 3 good starters and 2 average guys around them. Their bench is solid because they have 2 guys coming off the bench that were starters previously. Nothing spectacular but they get enough from those guys.
In this hot start in conference play they have been so reliant on scoring from Nowell & Johnson, both that at times have played at a level I don't think is sustainable. We'll see. They are good but I'm just not sold.
Agree - -not just yet. - going to be some interesting match ups in this game - -You think possibly they put Kevin on Johnson ? - -similar hghts aren't they ? - Juan on Nowell.
They have 3 good starters we have 3-4 pretty god starters. - our depth is suspect, - our bench of Bobby - - Joe - - MJ to a lesser degree ( we just haven't really gotten a good feel for him cause he is always hurt in one way or another ) & then our bigs - -kind of a hodge podge hee - -I guess you would have to say depends on the situation - so Clemence - Or Zuby - -so i think we offset there because there to I think we can gt just enough nothing special but I guess ok i guess -going to be interesting. - That place will be nuts - but we have vetrans that have been there before.
Another thing is I know sounds crazy but it just seems that this team doesn't gt rattled- - e get behind - we don't force/press just keep plugging along
I mean, do we ever really put anyone on a specific player? We just switch everything anyway so most teams can get whatever matchup they want. A player really has to go off for that style to change. Only special situational type stuff I've seen from this year's team is doubling the post and maybe once or twice Juan wouldn't switch when he was trying to clamp a specific guard.
That, to me, is what is pretty scary about how good this team could eventually be. They have so many more layers to explore.
@drgnslayr self has teased a full
Court press a few times. Wonder if he’s saving it like the daunted triangle and 2.
@Gorilla72 replied to your similar comment in another thread and brought up WVU. The plan seems to be hack hard and hack often and dare the refs to put KU on the line 30+ times. The. Whine about a KU whistle after the loss and hope for a more favorable one the next time around.
Glad we have at least one game before we go to Manhattan because there’s be no way we’d get anything close to a good whistle there one game after shooting so many free throws. It would be like a cage match.
Good thing about this team though is with Jalen and KJ on the floor, good luck bullying those guys around.
@Gorilla72 My concern was that Huggy would get ahold of this tape and the next meeting with WVU would put someone in the hospital.
@drgnslayr There was a time where I worried that maybe this game could be used as a blueprint for other squads but I think you are right. It was all about KU's energy. As soon as our D applied real pressure, they broke.
@stoptheflop My hope is that this set of games is actually what it looks like when Kansas plays poorly. It sure has LOOKED ugly for stretches to open the big 12. But man, do we have play makers in big time moments. Dejuan always seems to make a play when we need it most and key a big turnaround. That first drive and dish to KJ was huge, the quick pass in transition as well.
Wilson played tough D and just kept on fighting on a night where he was mauled every time he touched the ball.
Kevin struggled all game and then his pressure D and AND1 finish sealed it.
Even Gradey came up with a couple monster rebounds on a night where he was essentially bear hugged for 40 minutes.
And then there's KJ. Don't really have to work that hard to find his contributions. Good lord.
@BeddieKU23 it’s not even good defense.
It’s just amazing that Zach got beat immediately after every bucket he made…
Well it feels like we should be down big based on how we are not making any shots.
Bunnies
At some point kj needs to finish that leaner though.
@drgnslayr said in Maybe #1:
We just proved we are #1 a few months ago.... I prefer being 2-4 ranked... still a #1 seed but a little less attention and targeted by other teams. A little.
Being 2-4 isn't about the target. It's about the CHIP! You know this...
@drgnslayr I think a ton of credit has to go to this starting five. Dejuan and Jalen have taken up the ochai and Christian leadership roles extremely well. Gradey and Kevin have bought in an figured it out faster than any newcomers I can think of. We all thought Kevin would be a good fit but he has truly been a great fit. Feels like he’s always been a jayhawk. Gradey offers so much more than I think any freshman we’ve had under self. He’s the best shooter on the floor every game. He demands all of the defenses attention. When he can’t get free he still works hard to move the ball, rebound, and play defense. His one on one d leaves something to work on and he gets lost once or twice a game but he also gets his hands on balls and jumps in passing lanes every now and then as well. KJ just continues to grow without losing any of those humble qualities that brought him to this level of playing time to begin with.
There are certainly players on this team who are not bought in. Or even if they are “bought in” still don’t quite get it. You don’t have McDonald’s all Americans not just bench warmers but not even sniffing the floor in double digit wins when there’s foul trouble if EVERYONE is bought in.
But like you said, still plenty of room to grow.
@benshawks08 the third option would be self has decided to use the Remy Martin strategy. Which is actually just the Malik Newman strategy. Keep a guy under wraps and then break him out on Feb March so no one has any tape on how to stop him. For a while I thought this was possible with rice. I don’t actually now.
@Crimsonorblue22 either terrible luck with injuries or saving face so he gets decent looks when transferring is my opinion.
@Crimsonorblue22 ref show all over the big 12.
Juan getting robbed on assists because no one can make Lay ups
Not that it matters but that was a clean strip by Bobby.
The lay ups are still bad
There’s Bobby!
@approxinfinity said in West Virginia Game Saturday:
Bobby look explosive like last game?
Not really.
Got ‘em to the bonus before 10 minute mark. Free points whenever the refs need em now.
Joe is struggling on both ends. Bad there.
Amazed that wasn’t called a charge.
Foul call coming.
