The Missing Piece... β€’ Nov 18, 2015 04:37 PM

@DinarHawk

Gosh... I really don't know.

I have to admit that I was hoping our coaching staff would have been blown away by the chip the Royals had and how they used it to completely dominate the playoffs.

Maybe it just goes deep in an individual's personality traits.

Izzo always seems to have a chip. Maybe he carries a "Napoleon complex" with him.

Even Calipari seems to be more inspired. Maybe all the hate that is created against him works to his favor and he gets personal drive off of that.

It just seems that we have way too high of a "comfort level" at Kansas.

I think Self is great. Very capable coach. But I don't know if he can figure out how to create that "missing piece."

There is always the possibility that some event comes along and builds something with this team. I never want to hope for a tragedy to get there... but tragedy/struggle/hardship is the easy pathway towards building a chip. No way our 2012 team deserved to make it to the final game just based on talent. Those guys had their hearts on their sleeves. They almost beat Goliath.

Who are THESE guys? β€’ Nov 18, 2015 04:27 PM

@jayballer54

"Really frustrating Frank, Devonte WAYNE just looked so out of control on their drives to the basket, just flinging shots, forcing shots up, stumbling Ridicilious, Sooooo many forced out of control shots."

Kind of describes what Andrew Wiggins did at Kansas.

This is the sort of thing that happens to players when they don't run offense. We can say.. "let them play" but without some structure (even if it is minimal), chances are even talented players will choke.

What made Valentine effective, more than his shot, was his pass. He single-handed beat Kansas. We "attempted" to double-team him and he cut right through our two guys like a buttery knife through a baked potato. Valentine has high basketball IQ, poise and desire. He can't dribble a ball any better than our guys. He has the right tools, and they played with just enough structure for him to go off.

Look at our offense (if you want to call it that). I didn't even recognize that we were running offense. We just put guys out there and must have told them their spot to stand on, and pass the ball around. That isn't offense.

Where were the ball screens? Where were the screens away from the ball? Where were guys making sharp cuts? Where was our back door alley-oops? Where were the plays to free up our BG, who in theory is such a great trey slayer.

We ran nothing.

I never want to see another Kansas team go abroad for a summer to "gain experience." What hogwash. Kentucky was full of freshmen and they were a million times more prepared than we were.

Oh my gosh... we still have to play KENTUCKY!

Maybe we need to lose to them in our own backyard for guys to be motivated enough to really execute. Or maybe it won't even matter.

A Pure Embarrassment β€’ Nov 18, 2015 04:16 PM

@wrwlumpy

Excellent! Is that from "Young Frankenstein?"

The Missing Piece... β€’ Nov 18, 2015 04:08 PM

We always make other excuses for losses. Bad refs... OADs,.. we even blame walk-ons (Morningstar).

We refuse to address that we aren't hungry enough to win the big prize.

I'm sure talent alone can sometimes win it all... but it is a rare example.

All we needed last night was ONE GUY to step up and match Valentine. We didn't need OAD talent or anything else.

I didn't see "the chip" in the entire MSU team. I saw it in Valentine. Sometimes just having ONE GUY with a chip can bring victory. Case in point; last night.

At this point... I'll settle if we can get ONE GUY to carry a chip.

Maybe Cheick is the missing piece. Maybe he has a chip he brought from Mali.

The Missing Piece... β€’ Nov 18, 2015 03:45 PM

Step one for this team is for the need to DEMOTE them.

No more "4th-ranked team in the nation!" They didn't earn that greatness.

They also need to lose all the nonsense sports commentary calling many of our players great, when they haven't earned that title.

Guys like Svi, Carlton... and soon (hopefully) Cheick... They've been put high on a platform and they haven't earned that spot. It is pure damage to their potential of ever developing a chip.

Lottery picks? Seriously? Guys don't even have to do anything and they are lottery picks?

I'm sick of all the fame that is nothing but hot air.

Greatness is something that must be proven. It has no value as something "anticipated" based on "potential."

That doesn't mean diddly... Just more delusion.

Greatness is earned, not a freebee prize at the county fair.

The Missing Piece... β€’ Nov 18, 2015 03:33 PM

This team is missing a piece.

It is the same piece we have missed every year except '08 and '12...

This team is missing a chip.

!imallin2x.jpg β†—

They were beat, single-handed, by ONE GUY that had a chip, Valentine.

ONE GUY beat them. Pull Valentine out of this equation and Kansas has a 20+ victory.

ONE GUY wanted it more than 15 guys wearing crimson/blue.

That really is the only way to look at this.

Valentine is a good player, but he isn't a great player. He just wanted it more than our entire team wanted it.

Valentine 1 Kansas 0

Even though we were all blessed with the outstanding performance by our KC Royals... the perfect example of what a chip can do... we still discard that lesson and think we can just go out there and "out-talent" teams.

Cheick Diallo is not the missing piece. Sure... he can bring a lot of qualities to our team in the area where we need it most. But unless he brings a chip with him, we aren't going anywhere in March. In fact... you can just about bet we will have another early exit.

It is time to ERASE our hard drives from the history of this past summer at WUG. We aren't champions of anything except a bunch of defunct International teams. In order for us to be a team worth remembering, we have to win in our own league.. against our peers. WUG can end up doing us more harm than good. Yes... you heard me. That Korean Gold is a constant reminder of how great we are, how superior this team is. It is a chip we already won. The winnings keep us in a delusional fantasy of greatness that doesn't exist... greatness has to be earned every time out on a basketball court. Even greats like Michael Jordan had to prove himself every time he stepped on the floor.

If anyone still isn't getting this... maybe one more example, though I could glance back at sports history and see that almost every champion has been driving by a chip.

Ronda Rousey

Here is the perfect example... someone so talented that she lost her one big advantage that brought her to greatness... a chip. She went from the top, to the bottom, in just a few minutes of her sport. That is how fast someone with uber talent can fall after displacing their chip.

Armour: Ronda Rousey paying for her arrogance after loss β†—

Our kids have to learn... they aren't great because they play for Kansas. All the greatness at Kansas is historic. But that history belongs in a book. Champions are born everyday. It is a new day. The only way for these kids to find greatness is to go out and earn it. They are completely surrounded with the very best tales about athletes and teams that play with and without a chip. All they have to do is grab on.

It starts with our coach. Can HCBS develop a chip? He is a very talented coach, a very intelligent man. And he does have a great drive in coaching. But what carrot is out in front of his nose? He is being paid multi-millions every year. He is viewed as a definite HOF'r. He is a God in Lawrence and with college basketball fans. All those things are great, except they work against him creating a chip. What more is there for him to accomplish? Is the next mountain top easily obtainable?

Why is it so tough for our guys to come out and play poised, with energy and conviction, in big games?

35 Crazy and Unique Tattoo Ideas For Men and Women β†—

I really don't understand this phenomenon with the general public.

I once new a biker... Big, muscular man... bald... and he had a tattoo on top of his head. When I met him he asked me what I thought the tattoo was. I said... "to be honest, it looks like a pork chop!" I guessed right. Imagine how hard it would be to make a tattoo of a pork chop really look like a pork chop?! He laughed and shook my hand, and introduced himself... "they call me PORK CHOP!"

We will THRASH him tomorrow night!

Following The Tattoo Trail... (Soon To Be Trial) β€’ Nov 16, 2015 11:12 PM

@jaybate-1.0

Tattoos used to be mostly related to sailors. Guys would put their company insignia, ship name, and other things on their arms to express the level of commitment. Or sometimes "mom" to remember her while at sea or abroad.

Today it still has a lot of ties into gangs. But, obviously, you don't have to be a member of anything to get inked. So many people get them so there really isn't one overwhelming message generalized by a tattoo.

I think a few years back, basketball players got them as part of earning "street cred." This originally came out of playground ball. And there was an association with prison tats and gangs. I remember those times on the court. Word was out that "so and so" was released from prison and on his way over. Most of the time, the cons didn't show up. A few times, these guys did show up. They were always given street cred for toughness because it was always thought that no one played rougher ball than inmates playing in the yard. None of those guys stick out in my memory as being any tougher, better or anything else.

But now few players relate to playground ball and street cred. Their tattoos are (JMHO) their attempt to mimic their basketball idles.

I'm mentoring a 25 year old kid right now. He is an ex gang banger trying to turn his life around. He is well-tatted and has gang tats on his arms. He doesn't like to go out in public wearing short sleeves, mostly because the police know the gang tats and he gets messed with constantly. Four times now the police gang squad has visited my home to check him out. One time they had their weapons drawn.

Someday... when he gets himself together enough (financially), he will have those tattoos removed.

I'm pretty sure tattoo removal is one of the fastest growing businesses today.

@JayHawkFanToo

I'm just playing "wait and see" with the rest of the B12. I hope we can be a Final Four team this year... and it would be great if another B12 made it, too.

It is too early to tell on these teams... but I just don't see Texas or ISU being a deep run team in March, for many reasons, one being they're adapting to new coaches.

OU... just don't see it. I have a lot of respect for Lon... but I'm doubtful they will have enough pieces to contend.

WVU... good, and possibly the sleeper team. Huggy Bear is the real deal.

Baylor.... Baylor? Drew just can't seem to maximize the play out of all that talent.

@Lulufulu

"But, what does that have to do with KU ball? I dont see the connection."

The connection was 'plantar fascitis'... something one of MSU's players is currently dealing with, and I guess it was an issue yesterday for Manning, slowing his movement and throwing off his entire game.

I watched it, too.

Is that what his issue was yesterday? I never saw him play that bad before. At least he got his well-deserved record before looking that bad. Do interceptions count as "reception yards?"

His backup looked pretty good after a while.

I hope he doesn't continue playing too much longer. He should want to go out on top... or at least near the top.

I have to say that I'm not a Denver fan... I'm pure Chiefs. But I don't like seeing Manning have performances like that. He has played hundreds of quality games and is a true HOF'r.

@JayHawkFanToo

"ISU barely beats Colorado - ISU might not be a contender in the conference?"

Perhaps the B12 is overrated again!?

My guess... yes... it is overrated again. It is Kansas, and then a giant step down.

The other teams deserve more credit AFTER they prove themselves.

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS β€’ Nov 16, 2015 09:59 PM

@BeddieKU23

I'm thinking the opposite... that Self will run a lot of bodies tomorrow. I don't think he has a clear enough picture of who to play this year and he'll run about everyone to see who stands out. Plus... he better think about guys not rusting out on the bench. We will surely need most of the 12 guys that can really ball during the season.

It would be great to see us run about everyone anytime we can. Depth is something that has to be given attention to or it will rust away and the chances of transfers grows. That is a real issue with us because Self's system takes time to learn. For every player that transfers out we lose someone who we put time into teaching the system.

The Champions Classic β€’ Nov 16, 2015 05:56 PM

@BeddieKU23

"Our bigs getting their bigs into foul trouble is the #1 advantage we have in this game."

Most likely... the way to accomplish that will not be through our bigs, but through our guards. When MSU bigs come out top to attempt ball screens, we need to anticipate it and run into them BEFORE they set. This is a dead simple way to get bigs in foul trouble (this year). This is, by far, the area that has changed most by officiating... calling the moving screen.

This strategy not only helps get their bigs in foul trouble, it also helps break down a big chunk of their offense (if they plan high ball screens as a big part of their offense).

Yesterday... I watched our game with Northern Colorado again and paid attention to our offense. It definitely didn't look like the traditional Bill Self hi/lo. Guys in the post either catch the ball flatfooted or in motion. And if they are flatfooted, they typically go into motion immediately (like around the FT line). I am starting to see why JamTray is earning the starting spot. He represents a moving target and is extremely effective at driving and feeding. That ability creates a real weapon that will be hard to defend, even if teams scout us and plan for it.

Add in to all of this Carlton Bragg... who is showing he might be the best interior-passing big man we've ever had!

I think Carlton's influence is going to impact our team beyond just him getting PT minutes. I think his interior passing will inspire our other bigs to focus on making those passes, too.

Andrew White β€’ Nov 16, 2015 05:38 PM

@ralster

Are you talking about 6'4" Landry Shamet? That kid looks like a mix of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. I know it is too early to tell, but he is already much better at creating scoring space than any of our perimeter players. It isn't even close. The kid has footwork... and I can see him grow into the national spotlight if he can stay healthy and continue to bump up his game. He is from the KC area... right in our own backyard. We actually could have used him this year because he has better handles than BG and Svi...

The biggest issue is that with the current situation, players are guilty until proven innocent. They are penalized throughout the process... the process that should say they are innocent until proven guilty.

This does need to advance to federal court. I believe, eventually, that a high court will decide that the NCAA can not dictate policies that are deemed unjust within our civil justice system just because they are a private membership organization. The impact college education has is a public impact and should follow along the spirit of our federal civil court system on what is fair and what is not.

Might be Wayne.

I think the guy that will determine MSU's play in this game might be Forbes. He has put on weight and strength.

I'm hoping he gets in foul trouble, especially if they want to set high ball screens with Forbes.

Notice how many fouls are called every game for illegal screens?

Every team in the country right now better be focusing on not committing these fouls. Typically, it is a call being made against big men who come out top to set screens, but guards sometimes get caught, too.

Following The Tattoo Trail... (Soon To Be Trial) β€’ Nov 15, 2015 10:24 PM

@joeloveshawks

I think this is one more story... one more area proving how arcane and outdated the NCAA eligibility policies are. How can any school be punished for players receiving tattoo benefits? How can the NCAA pick out one school without literally corralling all 300+ schools because every single school must have players who have received this benefit.

When enforcement really isn't about enforcement, but "making an example out of a few" is the enforcement strategy... the system is broken.

Bias and favoritism by the NCAA? How can they not show a bias?

A Script From The Steve Jobs' Playbook... β€’ Nov 15, 2015 10:14 PM

@Lulufulu

Normally, when we play Izzo I declare it as a game of attrition. Big 10 ball tends to be rough, and Izzo definitely pushes his guys to play aggressive.

This year... I declare our game with Izzo as a game of fouling attrition. We are bound to hear a lot of whistles this Tuesday.

Which team does that favor?

I believe... it will heavily favor us. We have a veteran squad that has to now realize how important it is to play with their heads as much as with their hands.

I bet we also have more depth... especially in the post.

I'm imagining that we will be an open court team this time we play MSU.

THIS GAME MAY BE THE MOST-IMPORTANT GAME WE PLAY ALL YEAR!

Sorry for shouting that out... but here is my reasoning. This is our best early game for setting coaching strategy. For example, if we can have our guys push the ball like they did against Northern Colorado (and be successful), this may be the strategy we play with all year.

Can we become a team that is one half Roy, one half Bill?

I don't even have to say more, because most readers know what I'm talking about. Can we run an open-court offense but also still have a very good m2m defense? And then let's throw in a couple of types of presses.

We will still have to learn how to play effective half court offense. Can't get around that. But what if we suddenly pick up 12 to 18 ppg off of run outs?

When I frame it this way, our game with Izzo may still come down to physical attrition. Either way... physical or fouling... we should have the advantage in both cases.

Following The Tattoo Trail... (Soon To Be Trial) β€’ Nov 15, 2015 09:59 PM

Thank you, @jaybate-1.0 , for asking:

"One question: how did he afford all of those tats?"

That is a damn good question.

Here is a read on the pricing of tattoos...

How much should I charge for a tattoo design? β†—

Most tattoo artists work for a per-hour fee of between $50-$200. As you can imagine, the multi-designed tattoo body can be very costly to accomplish the effect. A "well-tatted" upper body can easily range from $5,000 - $10,000.

Where does the money come from? How do these athletes, that have never had a job and earned money, get the money to purchase these tattoos?

There must be a barter system in place. I'm sure there must be cases where the tattoo artist "trades out" work for the notoriety of having semi-famous athletes wearing their ink. And there are other examples of possible bartering (read the OSU link below).

There has to be more to this story. It must be a situation that is "too big to fail." I bet most of the athletes with these tattoos have received an illegal benefit (according to NCAA rules) by accepting tattoo work for "free" or at a heavily discounted rate (interpreted as a benefit).

Here is a situation where one of the best college football teams in America had to give up a year of bowl play (and other penalties) for breaking NCAA rules (which included tattoo benefits) - Ohio State gets one-year bowl ban β†—

He looked upbeat on defense.

Visuals are part of it. I think if he keeps going this way his defensive stats will start reflecting his efforts.

Could this be Apple all over again? A reinvented Apple?

Maybe a green apple?

Maybe a Greene Apple?

Granted Northern Colorado is not on the level of a Michigan State.

However.... Brannen Greene appears to have been reinvented. It seems that Steve Jobs has taken over his mind, and he knows what it takes to restore a rotten apple into a shiny, multi-colored apple that is hard to keep up with demand.

Brannen Greene has been reinvented!

The "Greene Apple" that showed up for the Northern Colorado is a fruit we had never tasted before.

Not only did he go 6-for-6 from the field, he went 5-for-5 from trey. Shooting is his calling card, but he was also bending his knees and brought probably his best contribution on defense since becoming a Jayhawk. Has Self finally reached this young man? Is he finally "getting it?"

What is next for the reinvented Greene Apple? Will he start creating his own shot? He seems to be faster and lighter on his feet than at any other time we have seen him. Friday, he even attempted his own break away drive to the hole against two defenders and earned a couple of free throws.

I know we all want the Greene Apple's trey baskets. Don't we also want what Self wants... the trey baskets PLUS a good defensive (and rebounding) performance?

I'm starting to think the "Greene Apple" is "getting it!"

You are right... the world is very touchy-feely about these issues.

But I don't think we can run and hide from it. This thread mentions the possibility of Kansas having the student body rise up and make a statement about race. If that happens, whether we like it or not, we will be facing these issues.

I am the type that always wants to be proactive instead of reactive (though often I am guilty of being reactive).

I hope all of us in here can be a positive example of how these issues can be discussed in an adult way. The only way we are tested is if we do have disagreements. And disagreements are perhaps the best way to learn if people can have an open mind. I know I am okay with someone calling me out on my stuff. I have pushed the envelope on this and I apologize if I have offended anyone because that was not my intent!

I am pretty sure that our common interest, Kansas basketball, will be there as a beacon for us to follow through any possible rough waters. I know I hold everyone in here in high regard.

If this situation doesn't get resolved soon it is just a matter of time before mainstream media runs out of other racial baiting stories and focuses on this.

I hope our student body will maintain a mature attitude and make every attempt to be a role model for students at other universities. Nothing wrong with a protest and practicing our First Amendment rights of free speech. The conduct of expressing free speech usually decides the effectiveness of spreading the message. I hope we remember that...

The media is already bouncing on stories to spread this concept that all students (at every university) need to take to the streets in protest.

Thon Maker β€’ Nov 13, 2015 03:42 PM

Maker would be a great test for Self.

The coach that signs Maker better be ready to make some adjustments in order to utilize his abilities.

Gosh... imagine a 1-3-1 with Maker around the FT line?

Or how about forgetting his height and playing him either at the 3 or 4? If he develops enough dribbling skills... imagine him driving in the paint and drawing over the defense so he can make an easy assist to our other big man?

I would like to see us sign Maker. Finally put to rest the talk that we can't adjust our play to the talent of our individual players.

@VailHawk

Wow, was that team stacked!

Just a few points short of immortality. That is the great irony/tragedy of sports.

@FarSideHawk

"The question is: If Davidson had hit that 3 at the buzzer or Derek Rose had hit that free-throw; would we still hold the 08 team in such high esteem?"

Nope... they would have been thrown on the pile of teams we reference as "underachievers." That is just the way sports work, and second place might as well be last place (in fans' minds).

The 2012 team completely overachieved. It was hard to find someone complaining about their performance after they finished runner-up to a stacked Kentucky that sent what... 6 guys to the league that year?!

From our current team I only see Perry as a guy that could have played with the 2008 squad. He may not be as dominant as Shady in the physical sense, but he actually has more scoring tools then Shady, including his 3-ball. Perry could be a great weapon on that team. He would have been left open from the trey line and have wide open shots whenever he wanted.

It is too soon to tell if Frank and Devonte belong on this team. Let's see how they do as seniors. Frank is still adjusting to the PG position and Devonte just needs more seasoning.

First off... we get a few OAD players, but we aren't running a revolving door. Teams like Duke and UK... they have to replace their starting 6 or so every year. Since they are elite programs and have gotten the top players for a while, they will always finish near the top. Some of the teams in the list had to replace a big chunk of their roster. That often leads to momentum.

Next... up until a few years ago, we really weren't getting a lot of attention from the very top recruits. Now we are. The first step is to just make the lists of most of the top recruits. We have done that now, so we are getting in that position to score more elite players.

You can list some schools that rarely get big recruiting classes every year. The thing is... are they making it high on the list consistently? Sometimes schools just manage to put it all together. Take U of Cal for example.

In the perfect scenario... we will have our players spread out from different classes with few leaving early each year. It would be great if we spaced things perfectly and only needed 3 or 4 new players every year.

I think we will get a bump from McCarthy Hall and the DeBruce Center. We are working our way up the recruiting ladder.

Question is... do we want to start having "revolving door" teams? Personally... I am very pleased when we sign players like Carlton Bragg. I don't mind an occasional OAD... but it would be great to get the guys just below and keep them for a few years.

@justanotherfan

It isn't a joke. But sometimes a humorous angle shows the absurdity.

Here... I've now repaired my choc***te cookie company. From now on, we'll just call these cookies "multi-color cookies." Kind of a catchy name, don't you all think? Definitely not sketchy!

@BeddieKU23

I agree with your post on Cheick's ability to defend.

I am under the belief that he is one of the better post defenders we've ever had at providing weak side help. In fact, he has been too aggressive offering help, hence his potential for foul trouble.

This guy plays in hyper mode. He will be a great help defensively, as long as he can stay out of foul trouble! Still... if you wonder his impact... he can't play right now so essentially he is starting every game now with 5 fouls. Even if he has some foul trouble, he should help us as long as he can stay on the floor.
