Another Year Where Kansas Loses Big 12... Again! β€’ May 06, 2015 06:47 PM

@joeloveshawks

And don't forget that we aren't done recruiting this year, too!

My point is that we need to be more successful recruiting in Texas, and if we can't be more successful, then we need to focus harder in the parts of the country we can be most successful in.

I know I'm sick about reading us in Texas and coming out empty-handed.

If we continue to go for OAD talent and just top tier talent overall, we should focus on a way to be successful in Texas, because so many quality recruits come out every year in Texas.

As @Kip_McSmithers said, we play at least 4 games there every year, and even Lawrence isn't so far away for some of these recruits' families.

How can we become more successful there?

If we don't want to take my approach of recruiting a big-time development assistant coach, then maybe we need to hire one with big-time ties to Texas.

Bruce Weber... there is a job opening in London, you may want to consider:

Quite Likely the Worst Job Ever β†—

I can see Bruce finding success as a tosher...

I know someone out there has this information....

But I'd like to see just how much time we have wasted in Texas and show a list of all the Texas recruits we have tried for during the Self era. And a list of the ones we caught. I will concede Oubre, even though he is really a Louisiana boy.

I believe this graphic would be quite shocking.

@Crimsonorblue22

Big difference from kids who grew up there. Lots of pride in Texas... I'm not sure Oubre really fit into the Texas mentality. If you ask him, he will not say he is from Texas. His claim is N.O. So he already slaps Texans in the face. Bet he didn't like it. The mentality in N.O. is 180% from the mentality in Texas. Luckily for us!

@Crimsonorblue22

Oubre just relocated to Texas... he's really from New Orleans.

@BeddieKU23

What I'm curious about...

How many kids have we signed from Texas the last 5 years? Any?

I've always thought we waste tons of time and energy in Texas. It is a real slap in the face to the friends of Texas players if they were to sign with Kansas. We saw that with Turner. Every inch of brains pointed him to Kansas, but he just couldn't do it. His classmates put the heavy down on him to stay in Texas. This is the typical situation in recruiting elites from Texas.

Not saying it can't be done... but if we really want to focus on Texas why don't we have an assistant coach from Texas who is well-connected and can speak their language?

"LOL UK will trend on everyones CB. UK was like 90% on Brown."

:-) Precisely!

"Going into next year with Mason, Graham, Selden, and Svi without Greene at 100% in the championship classic we could run into foul trouble?"

None of these guys are a SF. Svi and Greene might have the size but neither have the tenacity, strength and skills of a 3. What we really need is a 3. But at this late stage, perhaps Self will settle for a big 2 just so we can throw more people into the 2 and 3 spots. Vick is thin-bodied. maybe he can drive the ball and put on some strength and play some 3. Or maybe Greene and/or Svi will be slotted mostly for the 3.

I'm not sure why, but Self always goes for 2s. He seems to always chase 2s, even if we have 5 or 6 of them. I believe it relates to his "utility guard" concept that I've never really accepted. And that concept is that a big 2 can play anything from a 1 to 4. It just doesn't pan out.

Another Year Where Kansas Loses Big 12... Again! β€’ May 06, 2015 02:19 PM

Just thought of that... the last two years Kansas has missed it's premiere big man in the post during March.

Who knows... maybe we can start advancing in March again if we can keep a big guy healthy and eligible in the late season?!

Kentucky hot after Vick:

@Kip_McSmithers

It sure seems like we are a total long shot for Ferguson. First, we'd have to beat all those Texas schools, including in-town SMU. But also Baylor, Texas and TAM. These Texas kids get more pressure to stay in-state then any kids in other states. Then there is Louisville and others non-Texas schools hard on him. I'm guessing Kentucky will also start a heavy press for Ferguson.

Do you have intel showing we are a notch up on the field?

It has been fun watching Milton do so well after leaving Kansas. He just wasn't going to see the floor enough and have a big enough role to develop into what he has become now. We could all see potential in him, but sometimes it just isn't in the cards for a guy to stay where he won't become a big time asset.

Glad Milton took on the challenge to pursue another program, and very happy for him and his success!

This car salesman thinks so much for his players that he allows 9 McDs AAs on one team? Why didn't he take some of his signees and let them know they just didn't have enough minutes and since he is always only thinking about the benefit to the players he is letting them out of their LOIs? That's what a coach who thought of his players would do. Let a few of them go somewhere else where they could have made an impact.

"Cal: Like any player who says they want to come back, I don’t say, β€œGreat, I love it!” I say, β€œTell me why you want to come back,”"

If Cal was really thinking of his players wouldn't he say... "Lets send you through a NBA evaluation and talk afterwards. We need to have a good idea if you'll earn a guaranteed contract or not. We need some risk assessment and make sure you understand it all before YOU decide if you will return or go pro."

Another Year Where Kansas Loses Big 12... Again! β€’ May 05, 2015 08:17 PM

@REHawk

"Come, come, slayr. You really think we would have whipped ISU for the league crown if they had gotten Diallo? How about a tie? Could you manage to concede a tie?"

In that case, I think KU would still win at home. So that means a split with ISU. ISU still has to win on the road, something Fred hasn't proven to be consistent at.

We are capable of a tie, with or without Diallo. But losing the conference?

The thing is... this streak has raised the bar on players at Kansas. None of them want to be the ones to blow it. So losing it becomes tougher. Ties can happen, and are part of our big streak now.

I like Fred and his brand of ball. I definitely respect him, too. Not too thrilled about some of their fan base, but I get it. They are trying to get over the hump. A hump that has plagued them since the dinosaur era. Fred is the one coach really capable of figuring out the secret league code and competing for the crown every year.

I just don't see it happening next year. Even though many think they are ready to be a Final Four team. Seriously? I think they needed Diallo and another high rim player to be placed in that possible scenario.

Tevin Mack β€’ May 05, 2015 08:06 PM

He looks like a solid multi-year player with pretty general skills, not too specific. Good base to build on and he may still be adding inches.

Don't know anything of his defensive capabilities, he probably hasn't learned much of that in HS. Coaches look at attitude to assess potential for becoming a hardnose on the ball.

I'm all in for Big Mack!

Gosh... you would think these sportswriter clowns would get the memo by now.

You know... the memo that says "Kansas owns the Big 12, dummy!"

Once again, many believe Kansas will not repeat as Big 12 Champions.

"Georges Niang's decision to return will make the Cyclones a favorite to win the Big 12 (and end Kansas' stranglehold on that regular-season championship)."

College basketball's super early 2015-16 preseason top 25 revisited β†—

Seriously? Ranking ISU as 3# in the nation? I'm sure if they get their typical soft pre-conference schedule, they will win some games. But come on.

I wonder if poor Scott Gleeson would be willing to put his money where his mouth is?

Niang is a good player, but anyone riding on his back for National Championship hopes is nuts! Niang seemed to actually show a decline in his game last year, perhaps because of his previous injury or because he is finally being scouted a bit better in our league.

Our games with ISU should be very competitive games, and we are likely to lose one, or maybe even two to ISU (including B12 Tournament) but we know that isn't what will determine the next Big 12 Champion. It is knowing the formula for winning on the road in the Big 12, something Bill knows plenty about and Fred is still trying to figure it out.

Had Diallo chosen ISU instead of KU, I would still have a hard time picking ISU to win the league.

@DoubleDD

Nice enthusiasm!

We should be a tough team. I'd still like to have a big guard that can score from anywhere on the floor. That seems to be the missing piece. At least, on offense. Selden should step up for this. He is the guard with the football body. Our bigs next year will be a threat outside the paint and that creates opportunities for guards to score down low sometimes.

We really do need some guys to make big jumps in their games for this team to become a real threat. Our freshmen will have to adjust quickly to D1. I'm not too worried about Diallo. Bragg, I'm not sure about.

Svi needs to play tougher, more physical basketball. Turn down the nerves a bit, gain some confidence. Greene, if he is able, needs to improve in several areas to be effective; from creating his own offense, to improving his aggressiveness on defense. Devonte, just needs to keep being Devonte... he seemed to improve every game last year. Hopefully, we won't wear down Frank so badly this coming year. He still needs to expand his game as floor general and see more of the game, but I'm sure he'll be better.

And our bench still needs to improve. We have extra help in the paint this year but we still need Jamari, Hunter and Landen to step in for valuable minutes. Young guys are going to get in foul trouble sometimes or whatever. We still need quality post depth and their experience should be valuable in play and helping the young post guys.

The potential chemistry is exciting to think about. Last year's guys were good on and off the court together. And as stated above, really everyone will have to step their game up, and that is the chemistry you want. All these guys pushing each other. I know I'm ready for fall already!

Funny, I didn't remember the praise from Howland a few years ago when his team left AFH with a controversial loss. But he's a competitor so I understand.

Is that All There Is, Is that All There Is? β€’ May 04, 2015 09:35 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

Right on the mark!

After teams started guarding him closer outside his point production fell dramatically, as well as his FG% because he still tried to force some shots. We say he "forced some shots" because he missed!

Someone really needs to tell him he has to do more than be a spot up shooter. There is no room in the league for guys like him, not even room on the floor at Kansas as soon as defenders take another step out.

And what are we talking about anyways? BG replacing Selden? Ain't gonna happen. BG needs to pickup some replacement minutes for Selden at the 2 but he needs to be zoning in at the 3. We need more than a 3-pt bomber at the 3. We need a guy that can also take it to the rim, or at least, score from about anywhere on the floor. That requires moving with the ball and scoring... something Greene doesn't have the mechanics down on yet. But no reason why he can't advance his game with some work.

Is that All There Is, Is that All There Is? β€’ May 04, 2015 01:33 PM

I agree with @HighEliteMajor that Greene isn't a fit in the Self system. That is the reason why he doesn't see the floor enough. And @Lulufulu has a point about Self not being flexible enough with Greene by valuing the 3-ball enough.

But what is Greene's responsibility to be flexible enough to learn the Self system? Coaches can bend slightly for players, but they can't be flexible for their complete roster. There has to be a system in place and players carry the brunt of responsibility to meet the system requirements.

Greene breaks many rules, including team rules that get him suspended for a game (for whatever reason). He simply doesn't produce enough of a return on the floor when he is out there, even with his 3-ball. Even his 3-ball melted after teams started playing out a bit further on him. He isn't putting enough energy in the game to up his value. It was said in the middle of the season, but if he gets minutes and he doesn't produce points off the 3 then he needs to sit down. True. Why? Because he doesn't produce for the team in other ways.

Will Greene change? That is impossible to answer but there are indications he is moving towards change. He did change some this past year already. I recall him getting a concussion, a black eye, and smashing his fingers. He is starting to put more energy into the game and mixing it up. Even his dad thinks the challenge he has with Self is good for him. He's right. He is after what all of us are after; Greene improving.

I'm not sold on Greene having a competitive year this coming year because he won't be dribbling a ball in the off-season. He'll get behind and spend most of the year trying to catch up. This is where we need to talk about development. This is where a redshirt can help a kid by giving him one more year to mature in college. Greene could use it. He should be taken off the focus of producing for the team this year on the court and take his focus off the court. Building a better body is key. He's always needed work with his stance on the court, and that is a vital component for a player to get the maximum out of his game while playing. I wonder if his hip has always been part of that reason? He needs to work on his game. He needs to become more of a scoring threat than just a spot up shooter. He has to be able to create his own scoring, too. Off the dribble. And he needs to be alert on defense and stop having mental lapses. He needs to lift his energy enough to where he is doing more than just reacting to the game. He needs to be proactive at times. Learn to push intensity.

Redshirting the right way involves commitment by both coach and player. Stretching out a player's career with an extra year costs a team opportunity cost of one recruiting spot in that extra year. The player needs to appreciate the opportunity given them and commit to making it his hardest working year for personal growth. And that player needs a commitment from the coaches to still give them focus even though they won't receive PT in that year.

I'd like to see Greene focus on a player out there to model his game after. I believe a great match for him would be a guy with the same name; Danny Green for San Antonio. He is a 3-pt bomber and he's also not the most physical player in the league. But he plays smart basketball, he has to fight to earn his shots and he does, and he finds ways to offer more to his team than just the 3-ball. He is a small forward and not so different in build from Greene. Imagine if Kansas had a player with the skill set of Danny Green? Maybe Self and coaches would start putting more time into creating offense for him (since it becomes obvious he will be earning key PT)?

I think there is hope Greene can adapt and grow his game to fit better in Self's system. Other players did. Withey did. A big part of it is basketball IQ and Greene needs to stop falling asleep on the court for minutes at a time. Part of that is just expending the right energy level at all times. Better focus would help him accomplish this.

In my book, he is worthy of a redshirt and if he falls behind this year like I think he will, then we won't be giving up his shooting weapon. But I could be wrong, and maybe he improves by playing with less pain. We'll see.

Is that All There Is, Is that All There Is? β€’ May 03, 2015 07:34 PM

@HighEliteMajor

"Suppose Greene's recovery is slow, or something goes wrong there?"

What about giving Greene a medical redshirt (if he is willing, but probably is)? That would give us one more guy staggered away from the graduating class 2 years from now. I know many think he is our answer at the 3, but I don't see him being an effective 3 this coming year unless he makes a miraculous recovery and shows more ability to drive the hole and have more offensive diversity and defensive intensity.

And if we do recruit a big guard/small forward still this year and is someone that can step in and give good minutes this coming year, it seems to really make good sense to RS Greene. Greene is one of those guys we all see the potential in but appears to be a slow developer. I'd like to see him put on more strength and become more aggressive.

I think we will see a lot less redshirting in our program moving forward because we are focused on OADs instead of development.

I'm with you on us having a stellar recruiting year if we now land the Greek Freak and Mack. Spot on!

Is that All There Is, Is that All There Is? β€’ May 03, 2015 05:24 PM

@HighEliteMajor

I agree with your post. Not sure I would call it "moderate failure" instead going with "moderate success" (glass half empty / half full concept).

Papagiannis sounds like a great addition. It sounds like he could give us some quality minutes this coming year and then be our big post presence in the future.

I have been saying for quite some time now that we need to be preparing for two years down the road, when we lose a big chunk of our depth. It would be great that one of our experienced players is a footer in the post.

What I like about Papagiannis is that he can also be additional help for this coming season. Hard to say how this coming season will go, but on paper it looks like we could contend for a NC. If that is the case, guys we sign now should not only be long-term projects, but should also have something to contribute right now. Papagiannis seems to fit that description.

I really want us to add at least one guy who will be here more than a year and have a great possibility of developing into championship-quality talent.

It is amazing to see what UK signs in what is now considered an "off year."

They should be formidable next year... but unless a freshman or two step up into a leadership role, it will come down to experience. That Kentucky 2012 team seemed to have the right mix of some experienced talented players, like Lamb and Jones, and even a senior in Darius Miller. Mesh those guys with the uber-talented Davis, and stars Kidd-Gilchrist, Teague. That team didn't have the platoon system. Really had just 6 or 7 top talent guys. They were able to run with a core and develop some chemistry. That made them dangerous.

I am not that familiar with the upcoming Kentucky team, and they are still recruiting. But they don't seem to have another Davis in the works. But they might build some chemistry because Calipari failed at over-recruiting this year.

Got to label them as dangerous. And maybe now they will carry a bit of a chip.

Where's my checkbook? Oh wait... they don't take checks! I mean cheicks.

Is Andrew Wiggins Really Good? β€’ May 02, 2015 09:42 PM

I think Andrew Wiggins plays like Andrew Wiggins. Every other comparison isn't fair. People have been dropping their load of expectations on him since middle school. Once a basketball fan experiences a taste of Wigs athleticism they become addicted to the "what ifs" and everyone sets the bar high without any realistic approach of what can be expected from young Wigs.

When he was at Kansas... fans expected him to leap from tall buildings with a cape and bring us a title with ease. Coach Self seem to just think give him the ball and everyone stand back and we'll be okay... while he told Andrew to "drive it."

Now in the league, he is receiving a new set of instructions... on a pretty lousy team.

Wiggins never promised anyone anything. All he has done is gone out and played to his ability and listened to coaches, following their instructions. Beyond that, all he can do is shield his personal life away from all the naysayers. He is always going to have them. And every time he steps to a higher platform, critics will be around to let him know there has been a player higher.

I'm just glad young Andrew comes from a family that is used to sports exposure and has helped him stay well-grounded.

I can take statistics and prove that Wilt Chamberlain was a real dud player. Numbers will always be massaged and the essence behind them will not be adequately explained. So Wigs has a poor VORP. So what. As far as relating it to him personally, you have to open up a monster can of worms that include the performance of his entire team and how the coaches are using him. None of that can be totally explained in a number. Eventually it involves interpretation and biases set in.

In the very least, young Andrew brings exciting moments to a league full of repetitious overplay. That has to be worth something. It definitely impresses fans and advertisers. Winning is only part of the game, just ask Kentucky. Their brand of basketball this year was shear boredom to watch.

Spot on.. but might even the simple-minded recruit be wising up to Calipari's delusions?

In the very least... it seems many are starting to think, "why trade my valuable college PT minutes at a school only giving me half games and not even guaranteeing me a National Championship?" Even HS recruits will surely look at player stats from various schools to get an idea of what they might do there. Nothing really sticks out on the stat line of all those AAs at Kentucky this past year.

Kentucky's failure this year is about as stark as it gets. They can't really say that future years will give them a much higher talent advantage from the rest of D1 (over the advantage they had this year, even with seasoned top tier talent)... so they can't promise "perfection" moving forward. This past Kentucky team and fan base was basically promised "perfection."

Apocalypse Now!: The death of Platoon. β€’ May 02, 2015 04:05 PM

Kentucky hit the perfect storm this year. Perfect storm to taint their Calipari-style approach to basketball.

Kentucky takes an undefeated season into post play and makes it to the Final Four.

How many Kentucky fans believed they were going on to the perfect season? After all, Calipari has been talking about "reaching for perfection" for years now. He had the mass herd of Wildcat fanatics totally on board with his concept. This is the same concept he sold his team and the recruits considering Kentucky.

101% of Kentucky fans thought they were headed to "perfection."

Here comes Wisconsin. A team clearly less skilled... however... a team that carried a chip on their shoulders for Kentucky for an entire year. You can bet several of their players had made a Kentucky Wildcat dartboard to hang in the team locker room. A year is a long time to carry a chip. It gives guys time to think about how they lost their nightmare game and how they are going to win their heavenly game to come. Wisconsin was the only team all year that really WANTED Kentucky. And though 101% of the Kentucky fans knew they were going to win, 200% of the Wisconsin team knew they were going to beat Kentucky.

The Kentucky players were blindsided in that game. Talk about deer in the headlights... They had been brainwashed all year into the Calipari fairytale of perfection. And what is the REAL difference between this Kentucky team and Bobby Knight's "PERFECT" team? Bobby Knight sold hard word, discipline, focus and a team concept. Not a friggin' fairytale about perfection. You would never hear Bobby Knight talk about such a stupid and unrealistic concept in basketball. The mention of the word shows how unrealistic someone is. An undefeated season does not spell P E R F E C T I O N in anything.

Consequently... this long-winded story does have an ending. Remember those 101% Kentucky fans? The fans caught up in the fairytale concept of Calipari's "perfection?" In that same lost mentality they began throwing the world under the bus. Fans became extremely nasty. Ask people who went to the Final Four. I recently met a nice Wisconsin fan who attended and she was shocked by the attitude of Kentucky fans, describing them as the same as Alabama football fans. Obnoxious. So... their obnoxious behavior was suddenly center stage with nothing hiding it any longer. What recruit wants to play for a program with unreal God-like expectations and an obnoxious fan base? Loathing in the toxicity created by abundance.

Gosh... look at how unrealistic Calipari was in this Wisconsin game (read the link). Even had they won that game, is that attitude something that belongs in the same sentence as "perfection?" Calipari was delusional and couldn't see how they could lose, even as Wisconsin went on that final 6-minute run. That is delusion and it helped freeze Kentucky into not reacting because they were never the perfect team.

""When we were up four with five minutes to go, I thought it was over. Even when Wisconsin made that run, I thought we'd figure it out," John Calipari said Friday night."

John Calipari always believed his team would find way to beat Wisconsin β†—

I'm wondering if many of these OAD players are finally catching on that playing at Kentucky means playing for a delusional coach, and their single season of college basketball will be played in a delusional environment, in a total unhealthy concept of everything, not really the right kind of prep leading into the NBA?

We all need to do our part by never letting the basketball world forget the story of "Calipari's march for perfection." It's a story about delusion, nothing more.

The bright side about Brown... he's not going to Kentucky!

@Statmachine

I hear what you are saying, but actually Austin was evaluated to be unable to run at full D1 speed. They have given him a medical redshirt, which will allow him to graduate on a full ride and not have to pay from his pocket, even though he won't be dribbling the ball this year. Turns out to be a pretty classy thing to do, instead of just cutting him from the team. Those appear to be the options, but it just came about right in the middle of the Brown recruitment so it looked bad.

BTW: Michigan, like Kansas, isn't losing sleep with the Brown loss and are down to the wire on other recruits, trying to fill that one spot.

  5. There is a growing number of International players coming up through the system who want to play American college ball

  6. Self is realizing what @HawksWin is talking about. Better attitudes, good work ethics, and many come here with advanced skills

Jeff is angling and scrunching slightly. It is a habit all tall guys are conditioned to do their entire lives in order to prevent their heads from being chopped off in photos.

His is a 2016 grad who seems to be getting more attention all the time. From what I read, he has only used up one of his visits and he visited ISU. Always great to keep talent away from Fred!

St. John's, Villanova, and Syracuse have been hot on him. But it looks like 10 schools have made him an offer, including Kansas.

It took me a long time to figure out Self and why Cliff rode the pine. But I did finally get it.

Even though Cliff's numbers were better than BamBam... he was too easy to beat on defense. Teams figured out easily how Cliff couldn't make a pick switch. Cliff was the weak point of any defense we had on the floor and the problem with that, and in this extreme case, was that Cliff's breakdowns cost us a lot more than 2 points. His breakdowns start costing our entire defense to fail because the momentum shifts to our opponents and our entire defense slumps after a few of those breakdowns. Cliff had to be put in for brief stints and then pulled... short periods to try to mask his defensive deficiencies because every team (and their dog) would quickly start to exploit Cliff's horrible defense. He is easily the worst defender we ever put on the floor in the Self era. Yes... he could block some shots. But he could never speed his mind up to D1.

I really like the big guy... but I see him in Europe soon. If he can't calculate and execute a defensive switch, he won't even earn bench time on any NBA team. NBA teams don't waste a second when they see an easy exploitation, and that describes Cliff's defense to a T!

Diallo is a complete 180 degrees from being like Cliff. Big time motor and his prowess is defense first. He should be plugged into Self's starting lineup immediately or after just a few games, if he needs it to pick up to the speed, but I doubt he needs even a few games. And we need him to pickup as much experience as possible early in order to fully utilize him by March.

Donovan to OKC? At least it isn't Bill Self... β€’ May 01, 2015 01:39 PM

There is nothing saying we are... just on KUSports where Florida players might be looking elsewhere and it didn't mention Stone. Why wouldn't we be interested in Stone? He is more the prolific 3 than Mack.

But I do see Mack continuing to add inches. He looks like he has 2 to 3 inches of growth left in his bones... making him the next version of Perry Ellis.

I see KUSports mentioned how Florida's players might be reconsidering, but they left off Keith Stone from the list. Does Bill Self have strings over that site? I can understand not wanting to mention Stone while hot on the trail of Tevin Mack.

@brooksmd

Gotcha... anytime I hear "downtown" I'm thinking Freddy Brown... one of the most prolific 3-pt shooters from the league. They retired his jersey in Seattle.
