I was going to say Weber was like watching a slow train wreck, but to be honest, it really isn't that slow.
Is it possible the B12 step in and fire him? Someone needs to do it...

I just caught the 8th inning on. Just in time to see us smash the gas!
Kind of makes me think we are done getting big men until Scot Pollard comes on board as an assistant coach.
Just waiting for the announcement any day now...
"Perfect" the perfect "P" word! :-)
I can't imagine what would happen if Cal created a huge scandal at Kentucky and then tried to run and wash his hands from it. Kentucky isn't UMASS or Memphis. Just like the Jayhawk Nation... the Big Blue Nation is everywhere on the planet and Cal would always have to look over his shoulder. Canada would not be a safe place. Maybe North Korea. He could go over there with Rodman and get an introduction... Sounds like a group of guys on the same page.... living about the same fantasy. Three guys thinking they know what perfection is. Actually, Rodman might be the sanest of the three.
Getting the "P" won't be a problem! Right, @Crimsonorblue22 ? :-)
I'm on it!
I don't really see us as a contender until outsiders look at us and exchange the description "a lot of talent" for "a lot of scrap." I'd take scrappy over talent any day of the week. That is why we lost to WSU. They sure as heck didn't out-talent us.
I always call it "chip" but call it whatever you want.
The road to the FF is paved in blood from players who scrap it out for loose balls and rebounds. Who wants it more? And who has the toughness to go dive for balls?
I get frustrated because I think most Kansas fans are as delusional as the players... always thinking we just need to increase the talent level. It is the Kentucky way.... 9 McDs AAs with most of them back for year 2 and they still couldn't get it done. All that NBA size and talent. El zippo! The only reason Calipari has won 1 NC is the unibrow. He would have taken the worst team in America and made them a contender, but he was the exception... approaching a Wilt level talent. I said approaching... How many McDs AAs were on Kentucky the next year when they bowed out early in the NIT?
How many of those UCONN players are in the league now compared to Kentucky after last year?
I'm not against talent. It helps immensely... but not when it comes with a price tag of playing soft.
Duke won it all and they had a bunch of talent.. They also had guys like Allen who would dive into a pit of cobras for a loose ball. If I could steal one guy out there for our team, he would be my first choice because maybe it would rub off on us like it did on his team mates who closed it out on the Badgers.
I give up on the idea of coaching a chip. I'm convinced... some guys have it, others don't. If they don't have it, then leave them for Kentucky. Let's find the kids who dive for balls, whether it be in an all-star game or a class-3 rural game.
Go man go! Build him a website and put on his favorite tunes in the background. Tell him the family love is waiting...
Or do they just develop more fear because they've come from HS and now have to turn it up a big notch?
I see players like Wayne and EJ... and they seemed to add on armor then go after less aggressive plays at the rim. But then every once in a while, both would go make a monster athletic play. That doesn't add up. It just looks like they are holding back the rest of the time.
What if they just went for it? 110% on every play? Would they get hurt? They could. It's more about playing smart than playing aggressive. You go flying into a crowd out of control and you are asking for it. But what if they did get hurt? If you want to really show NBA execs what you are made of, go blow out a knee and be back at 97% in 6 months because you bit the bullet on pain and fought through rehab. That's a statistic you won't see on any of these draft nutjobs' sites, but I guarantee that it will impress some teams when they know it would take an elephant gun to stop you from coming back quick.
I admit it is a daredevil's mentality... but there are health risks in sports, just as there are in flying over 62 school buses on a Kawasaki. Evil Knievel didn't make it big until he made it in the book of world records for most broken bones. Ripley's believe it or snot.
You got me excited... please go make it happen!
Oh man... what a similar coincidence I had yesterday. I sat beside Jeff Capel on my flight from NC. He sure was complaining about Duke making him fly coach. I guess that is how commercial airline got that name... from Duke assistant coaches living on cheap seats. Capel really caught me off-guard when he asked me if I knew of any HC opening rumors in the B12. Might he want another beat down?
Disneyworld? Isn't that where kids are getting infected with measles?
I'm thinking about the need for Diallo more for defense and rebounding. Any offense is a bonus.
It was extremely creepy. Some of the "lower hanging fruit" you could walk up to and get extremely close. Close enough to examine inside the cavity.
Definitely up there as one of the creepiest places I've been to in Europe. The catacombs in Paris are amazing for the shear mass of bone piles. I'd also mention the bone castle at Kutna Hora, Czech. Everything made of human bones... artwork, chandeliers, etc. Very creepy. I guess that is what happens when someone has too much time on their hands and piles and piles of bones laying around...
Wish I could borrow one of these guys for Halloween.
Amen!
That's exactly as I see it. But we don't really know. Maybe strip Thon from his handlers and clingers and maybe we end up with the dream package he had appeared to be on youtube the last couple of years. Hard to assess anything from an all star game. Guys are thrown together in a mixed salad manner. Give him a few months of solid coaching and maybe he finds his identity.
And then there is the eligibility issue.
What is clear is this kid needs to be removed from the people around him.
"As he improves, it will come along."
It usually does for guys with motors and toughness... usually sooner than anticipated.
DeAndre Daniels... the missing link that gave UCONN enough post presence to hang with one of Kentucky's tall teams and bring home the gold. Hard to believe... but the scoreboard doesn't lie.
And over Zim. Guess he didn't want to contest the shot because he could break a nail.
Whether he can score or not... what we really need is a post presence and that starts with a guy who has a motor. I haven't seen this kind of motor since TRob.
This reminds of a few years ago when we were in the race for Tarc. We had put all our eggs in one basket and the basket decided to go to Arizona.
I hope the results are different this year, but I have to admit that I'm surprised we are in that same situation all over again.
Does this mean a Jayhawk Christmas today?
Sorry... I sort of blew up this morning on the entire ShoeCo part of our society so I related it to what was something similarly distasteful in my opinion. It's difficult for me to even come over here and respond.
We are all or nothing on the OADs. Will it pay off? Sure takes a lot of guts to be the Riverboat Gambler!!!
I bet we can land Diallo if we offer him Self's joy ride jet! It's all his for 5 months... the months he will be a Jayhawk!
Luckily I'm an old guy and don't need to compete in the young men's athletic wear world. Luckily!
She is just like me and has always thought the sagging pants were dumb. Almost as dumb as the $200 basketball shoes...
Move over Shoecos!
Why are shoes the status symbol accessory in basketball? Who wants to pay a few hundred dollars for something that lives on the dirty ground? Where dogs go poo-poo? And what shoes smell good after the first time a player gets a good sweaty run in them?
Let's face it... shoes stink! How dumb is it to spend a fortune collecting them for your closet? Your bed is how many feet away from your stinky closet?
And hey guys... trying to compete with women on shoes is just asking for trouble! Let's face the facts, they look a heck of a lot better in their shoes than we do in ours!
So.. move over Shoecos... you have competition in the world of basketball accessories.
Think hard about recent street trends. This is where fashion comes from. We might all dread this look but consider it just the spark to light the fire:
Okay. Stop laughing or puking and get serious with me. I know the first thing to enter your mind... "how are players going to run down court with their draws hangin'?" That's easy to answer... specially-designed pants that have an expanded inseam that gives the appearance of a deep sag while players maintain a full range of motion.
Next question: "Why would guys want to show their ugly underwear or jockstraps?" That won't... until the design world starts filling the demand for high-design buzzwear.
Yes... it is time to bring the thong into men's basketball:

Borat is leading the charge and look how popular he has become:

Imagine the creativity possible:
Celebrities have long embraced the sag:

Imagine how much money can be made off of this billboard:
Soccer has already jumped on board. Do we really want to fall behind soccer? :

Let's face it, the time has come to honor the guardian garment of our family jewels. The marketing potential is off the charts and at least you can throw these in the washing machine so you don't stink up your closet!
Are you reading this, Nike?!
True... I'll never be able to live down the "p" post!
Go Bill! Full court press!
Back then should would call me "crazy!" (I know what you were thinking...) But I lived to go diving for balls and my favorite play of all times is to slide on the floor like a bowling ball and take down other players like bowling pins.
You have to realize how bad of an outside shooter I was. I had to find my thrills in basketball in other ways.... :-)
"I'm taking back my comments about BG's defense. I've talked bad about how he moves. Hearing what his dad said, I think it would have been really impossible to maintain a defensive stance. How did trained team drs not notice this? I remember when he limped off one game. Get well soon BG and sorry!!!"
I guess I missed some comments from BGs dad. I've always commented that BG had a poor stance and he needed to lower his center of gravity. Might he been suffering the entire time he's been a Jayhawk?
It is possible that if they relieve all his pain he might become a much improved player in the near future. Hope so! Go BG!
Concerning those wraps... I wonder how many of those wraps are for coddling injuries and how many are preventive armor? I used to like to deck out all my joints because when there was a loose ball I was sliding on the deck and I hated floor burns. And back in those days we didn't have all the cool functional wraps they have today. For example, I remember using my elbow pads from football. Had to look really silly by today's standards.
You might be right on the 1-3-1 being the best defense today. Probably because no one knows how to attack on the baseline any longer. Those days are long gone. I'm always amazed how players today seem to fear the baseline and they let themselves get pushed right out of bounds... ball out and a turnover. The baseline is not an area for the timid players....
Russell vs Wilt - Russell we truly one of the greats, and he was positioned as a distant second to Wilt. The match-up I enjoyed was that skinny kid from NYC, Kareem (Lew Alcindor) and Wilt. Every time those two played it seemed the game was televised. It is too bad they weren't from the same era because we only got to taste the slight overlap in careers. These guys were polar opposites and it was very exciting to watch them in head-to-heads.

This is quite the underground destination. Strangely enough, it doesn't smell as bad as you might think, even in the dead of summer.
He has plenty of experience now... back in the beginning he was green wood like everyone else but always got the nod.
I really like Wayne, and I hope he comes on big this year. My fear with him is Self starts moving him around to other positions where he doesn't belong. If that happens he becomes the next EJ... a guy that should have never been pushed into being a PG. I'm not saying he would be in the NBA right now but that move crushed his NBA potential. He took one on the chin for the team. I'll always have a soft spot for EJ... a true Jayhawk! Putting a round peg in a square hole usually backfires.
"Subtract 2 inches and that's the story of my life. I was probably the only 6'2" center in my league in HS and I still can't dribble worth a darn to this day."
I was blessed with an early growth streak and played center until the 8th grade. Then I was cursed with a slow growth streak that later said I should be on the perimeter. Problem was, I couldn't shoot the broad side of a barn. Dribbling... medium. So what was a guy my size supposed to do after that? My entire youth was spent perfecting post moves, mostly all the "back to the basket" stuff no guys know how to do any longer. I had no choice but stick to where I could offer something so I stuck it out in the post. Built body strength and played the closest thing I knew to "Sir Charles basketball." That is why I laugh today when people make excuses for poor post defense or rebounding because the lack of size. Phew! It is the size of the fight in the dog not the other way around. Don't give up floor space and make a guy shoot over you and you are already a better defender than 90% of the post players out there, regardless of their height!
Very entertaining and factual post. Bravo! I really like how you connected all the dots with players in their eras.
Good insight on the midrange jumpers being pinched out because tall players have more mobility to go block those shots.
We should also address the speed of the game, and how NBA teams score so much off of secondary breaks. It has largely become a game of getting a shot up before the defense sets because defenders are out of position and also unable to apply hedges. With a push in the pace the perimeter is where there is minimal traffic. More scoring space. So why not try a 3 instead of a 2? And since the defense isn't set neither are they in position to seal off the boards.
I've been noticing how many college teams are starting to realize they should be pushing pace, even if they take a bad shot. Especially if they think a quicker pace favors them on both sides of the ball. College coaches are very slowly coming around to understanding pace and how to change it to their advantage. The problem has been (IMHO) that they just need to let go of some of their teaching philosophy and just try to go out and win ballgames. Too many college coaches want to teach instead of win. They don't realize it as the truth because they believe their path to victory is through regimented structures based on historic philosophies. Sometimes they need to realize their current situation and become more opportunistic. For example.. you got one guy that no one can stop, build offense around him and the heck with "team concept"... instead you are going to burn the shot clock down to 5 and then start looking for the rim? Team concept?
There is a reason why the games of players like Jordan and Wiggins took off when they hit the NBA. They were freed from the structure and all the lessons and just got to play ball and take their man one-on-one. I remember catching a bunch of this back in the documentary on the '84 draft. Jordan set free from Dean Smith. It was said that Dean Smith was the only human on earth that was capable of shutting down Jordan's offense. OH SO TRUE!
What about Wayne? He has started every single game since becoming a Jayhawk. He's had arctic cold periods and we have three solid guys to replace him with. We used to mix up the lineup just to get guys to fight out of a slump.
I'm not sure that Kelly minded not starting at first. He was so lost out there and he probably preferred to work out some of his bugs before going public. Cliff was a complete bust. If a guy misses his defensive assignments that often there is no way you can keep giving him minutes. He didn't figure out his defense and offered only a little bit on offense.
I think we can all make excuses but at the end of the day we have only nailed 1 guy. All that money, all those assistant recruiting coaches.. big brand school... and we've only convinced one recruit to commit.
It just ticks me off. I can't believe all those guys can keep their jobs. If my job was to recruit and I didn't nail a single recruit all year, I would expect to be fired. We expect our player kids to execute, what about all the assistants?
Okay... we didn't hire John Lucas as a developmental coach... How about Pol? Most people don't know it but Scott is a very capable person. I could see him as an excellent developmental coach. Could that property be used to develop players?
I'm there.... whether I want to be or not! Ha... but seriously.. I love this match up. I'm a big Rafa fan... lets just keep that info in this thread only!
I had it on a screen and lost it. Just have a second here before an appointment.
I believe they recruited 1 5-star recruit and 3 4-star recruits. One guy is named "Melo"...
Your post makes sense... but I'd be thrilled to fill our remaining 3 spots with all 4-star guys including a super big! Oh.. these guys don't still exist because we squandered an entire year of recruiting on hold for top tier players... sorry.
I would love to see BG redshirt this coming year anyways. Let him fully recover and have a year to build more strength and other assets.
I don't care if we recruit over anyone as long as the recruit coming in actually has to earn their minutes. That is the way it used to be under Self but not any longer. Top tier guys are getting promised something. It didn't work when he said they had to earn their minutes.
I believe losing 3 scholarships each year for the next 4 years should make an impact. I know we would all be crying the blues if we had to give up 3 scholarship players and trade for walk-ons. Many out there see Syracuse in the NIT this coming year. And what about the "black eye" stigma given their program?
Believe me... you and I are on the same page!
So Syracuse Basketball was on a self-imposed ban from March play. They also have suffered other penalties from the NCAA, including a 5-yr probation and loss of 3 scholarships for the next 4 years. Currently, they don't have a sports director.
Yet... Syracuse has the 6th best recruiting class coming in according to Rivals, plenty of bigs, too. Rivals Class of 2015 Team Rankings ↗ Of course... we didn't even make the Top 30 list. I know we have a lot of guys coming back... but still... we also have some serious needs.
I don't get it. Can someone enlighten me why we have only signed one player in this upcoming class? We spend more money than any other D1 program on recruiting, but we can't even compete against the Orangemen after they've been kicked in the testicles?
Is it that hard to recruit players to Kansas?
I'd like to see us finally land another quality 3 that will stay for more than one year. It definitely paid off when BRush came back after his injury. A well-oiled 3 playing for us makes us a contender. It's the position that can be adjusted to really take advantage of holes in defenses because the 3 can setup anywhere on the court and has the freedom to score from anyplace. I don't really have enough background on Ingram to know what he could bring us... but I know if he is really good and we could have him for more than one year, he would make a big contribution to Jayhawk basketball. Imagine if we had Kelly back this year? I'd have us as a Top 5 team regardless of who else we get or don't get!
Zim doesn't seem to have the ambition to come to a Kansas... where the spotlights are bright and we are in real need of a 5. He is still in "cruise control mode" thinking UNLV will give him an easy transformation to the league.
"Gregg Marshall going over the KU game with fans, calling them "Big Brother" "
That's a bit egocentric... if we are "big brother" then we are watching them. I don't think most KU fans and our team watches Shocker ball.
But enough... glad we have a little brother down south. Hope we can meet them again this next year in March. I bet Perry would like another shot at them!
Yeah... I can see him being a Kevin Durant type. A lot more than I could ever have seen Myles Turner pull it off.
Ingram coming to Kansas and playing the SF would be the best thing for him. Toughen him up for the next level. Make him scrap it out.
But what we see and what the recruit sees are two different things. Most go for the easy path... Everything I read about Ingram is weighted on his shooting. Why come to Kansas if you want to become a premiere perimeter shooter? We seem to make perimeter shooting an afterthought to post scoring.
I hope the kid is bright enough to see what his game needs. It is going to need a lot more than just some polishing on his 3. Kansas would be a great developmental move for him if he has the brains and patience to see him as needing more than one year of college ball. If he can't see that I'm not really interested in seeing what he can do for us in just one year. He is going to get pushed around in our league as a freshman.
