@jaybate 1.0 I thought "Outliers" was a terrific book. As an educator, I have seen kids held back for a number of reasons, although not usually for athletics. In the case of boys with summer birthdays, holding them back and starting kindergarten late makes some sense, especially if they are emotionally immature. Many people are doing this now, even for girls. I have two grandsons who swim competitively, and they have benefitted from having favorable birthdays, but the league made this cut off rule and not their parents.

Tharpe's Performance Inexplicable • Mar 03, 2014 01:51 PM

@HighEliteMajor : I just looked up the record of the 2008 Jayhawks. They had 3 big twelve losses: at Texas, at Kansas State, and a very ugly one at Oklahoma State that had me screaming at the tv while I paced the floor throwing my arms around. After the loss at Oklahoma State, the team didn't lose another game. I would take that team over this one in a minute, because of many things, but especially because of the point guard.
Oh well, perhaps history will repeat itself.

Platoon Tarik and Perry? • Feb 25, 2014 02:25 PM

@jaybate 1.0 It is always an education to read your posts, but speaking from personal experience, it is a lot easier to bulk up than it is to lean up!

@globaljaybird I think that it is impossible for anyone who has not gone through what you are going through to understand. We have, and we do.
From Will Rogers: "If dogs do not go to heaven, I want to go to wherever it is that they go."

@wissoxfan83 Great attitude, very articulate and funny, seems to have been a great mentor to Embid. Lots of intangibles, and I love the fact that he wants to give something back to his community. Oh, and he has a degree. The species of the student-athlete may be endangered, but it still survives.

@KansasComet Tarik Black just keeps rising on my favorite player list.

@drgnslayr AND for Oakville, those of us who are walk-ons, who read every day, but seldom see posting time except during mop-ups against inferior opponents , promise to give you our enthusiastic support from the bench.

@DoubleDD Moreover, I have reasonable expectations that Ellis will not have to sit for irresponsible behavior.

@RockChalkinTexas I have not had this particular problem, but going to "private browsing" under the file menu on my browser has corrected the problem with other sites. Of course, you would just be able to read and not post.

@wissoxfan83 lol; copy and paste. Sounds exactly like my marriage.

@Crimsonorblue22 lol. I admit there were some years when that would have been a distinct advantage !

@drgnslayr I have been reading all season, but I am just now trying to get the hang of posting. I reminds me of when I first learned email. It was easier to reply than to generate something new.

I went to KU when the last glaciers were receding, and I emerged with a degree in biology and education. I am trying to imagine the following scenario:

The high school teaching scouts come to me after my freshman year and tell me that I am ready for the big time now. I might benefit from staying to get my degree, but if I come out now, I will make millions. I might not see much actual teaching time, but I will be set for life and I can help my family. I believe that I might have gone in a heartbeat. Certainly, preparing to be the best teacher I could be was a more worthy goal for my life. I love biology and I love teaching, but it wouldn't have been an easy decision to make. Unfortunately (or, perhaps, fortunately) no one gives teachers that choice.

Tharpe: Can We Get More? • Feb 10, 2014 01:43 PM

@jaybate 1.0 I have been reading all year, but have not registered until today. The phrase "furiously committed Trappist monks" made me do it. That describes the team in a nutshell, with the possible exception of Tarik Black, who is rapidly becoming my favorite player.
