Whatever petty grudges any of us had against Dean Smith should be put aside, especially today.
A gentleman and a man of principle, he integrated the ACC and graduated over 95 percent of his players. For those things alone I'm proud to have grown up in the same state.
RIP Coach Smith.
And don't forget Danny Little Bear. He used to come into the ring in full native headdress.
My brother used to work in the emergency room at the old St. Margaret's Hospital in KCK, near Memorial Hall. He got to patch up a few of these guys when the action got out of hand. I got to meet the Viking once when he came into the all-night grocery store where I worked. Nice guy.
Welp, another ugly conference road win. Should look much better against the Kitties.
Jeeeezzz!!!
I must be watching too much NBA.
What's up with the announcer whining about the refs! They're letting 'em play.
Better!
Trouble is, hardly any of our players were around for that 2013 loss. These guys don't have any sense of history.
Still wish Evan got more time on the floor. He could come in handy.
Nice minutes from Hunter. With so many games coming up in the next 10 days, we'll need all hands on deck.
Svi for three!
Meanwhile, the Irish are about to beat Dook. Hit two straight at the end of the shot clock...
Time to walk down the street and watch the grade schoolers hoop it up. Enjoyed the chat guys! RCJH!
Wait a minute...did I just watch this team beat somebody who played a zone against us? With no turnovers in the second half? Stunned!
Free throws Cliff!
Those slightly deflated basketballs hang on the rim so much better...
Graaaadually pulling away. Texas has one more run in 'em. Hold them off, and we got this.
KO!
Don't post there anymore, just observe.
Bouncing back & forth between here & KU Sports. Better crowd here.
Appreciate the hustle...most I've seen from this team in a while. Stamina & depth the key down the stretch.
"Let's play two"
And now, it's time for the ESPN Coach K canonization show. And I thought you needed to perform two miracles to get named a saint...
An ugly win is still a win. But Lord, if we play like this at Hilton we're in trouble.
This has all the pace of a Big East game. Nice to have the Eastern Time Zone fans (especially the Dookies) wait on us for a change.
@jaybate-1.0 I need to get a framed poster (or better yet, a laminated plaque) of that post. Something to look at when times get tough.
There isn't a better reminder of why we bleed crimson and blue.
JB, you are our true hoops guru.
My heart says KU wins, but my head tells me this'll be the first of several road losses this year. Close most of the way, but we fade down the stretch. Vegas has it about right.
Oh well, at least I can switch over to watch the Wiggins-vs.-the-Morrii matchup on ESPN.
Looks like we'll get to see the start of the game on CBS after all. Thanks Indy for putting away the Bengals early!
By the way, RIP Stuart Scott. Another loss to cancer. I always thought he was too much of a UNC homer, but he knew his stuff.
And a Merry Christmas from all the Jayhawks in the Pacific Northwest!
Just got a bagful of KU swag as part of a Christmas gift from my sister...house flag, banner, and a packet of trading cards with KU football highlights. (Okay, it's a small packet...)
Anyway, Happy Holidays !!!
Maybe it's not a trap game for for Leopards, but let's just hope they don't put up the same kind of fight that Easton PA native Larry Holmes (a/k/a "The Easton Assassin") put up against Muhammad Ali...
I echo your remarks, Brooks. My condolences to all affected by cancer as well.
As you make your year-end charitable donations, please consider giving to any one of the many worthy organizations fighting cancer, whether it's the V Foundation or one in your town. Here in the Northwest, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (named after the late MLB player and manager) has done a great job, and I've been supporting them for many years since I watched my brother's next door neighbor, an otherwise healthy guy, die way too early from the disease. We've all been touched by it either directly or indirectly, and any support you give to help beat cancer is greatly appreciated.
Whenever I hear Jimmy V's speech I get emotional. I was a fan of his ever since I got to meet him when they played the Final Four at the Kingdome in '84. During the Friday practice sessions, I sat down in a section that turned out to be where the coaches were sitting too...UNLV's Tarkanian and DePaul's Ray Meyer among them. Got a couple of great candid photos of V.
His speech really hits home this year. About a month ago I lost a loved one to cancer...an immensely talented dancer and choreographer. Even in her hospice bed she was still working out the steps for an upcoming performance with her friend and assistant...one that, thank God, she was able to watch on video the day before she died. As I watched her go through the final stages, I thought about Jim Valvano. "Don't give up, don't ever give up." And she didn't...all the way to the end.
Interesting place, RI. Got to visit my brother in Newport a couple of times when he taught at the Naval War College. Lots of neat old mansions there (or "summer cottages", as their turn-of-the-century industrialist owners called them). Also the town where JFK and Jackie got married. Not to mention the Newport Jazz Festival.
Saw a game at URI back in the '90s against Hartford. Hartford had Vin Baker, who later played NBA ball with Seattle. The Rams were underdogs but did a good job double- and triple-teaming him, and pulled out the win.
This is going to be a fascinating game to watch from a psychological standpoint. First, there's the DeAndre Kane issue. Will he play? If so, how much? Will he burst out of the locker room a la Willis Reed and hype an already overhyped crowd?
Then there's Embiid. After getting tossed Saturday, does he come out tentative? Will someone else have to play the role of aggressor on the boards? Can Black step it up while keeping the foul count down?
As for the way Wiggins stands, well, I'd put Liberace in the lineup if he helped us win.
In the British House Of Commons there's a title called Father Of The House. It's given to the most senior member of the chamber.
I always thought of Jaybate as the Father Of our chat House, if not in years, then definitely in stature.
Merry Christmas 'bate, and to all fellow board rats! RCJH!
@globaljaybird It's hard to believe that Yael Abouhalkah (sp?), the guy who wrote that screed, is the same guy who used to write for the UDK in the mid-70s. Yep, a KU guy wrote this. As I recall, he used to write intentionally inflammatory stuff even back then.
I've still got mixed feelings about the whole WSU thing. I'd rather let it happen organically...i.e., in the NCAA tournament. That way it'd be at a neutral site.
Then again, maybe if we do schedule the Shockers and clobber them a couple of times, that'd shut 'em up. I remember that UK wouldn't play us for years after we hung 150 on them...
Not to be a worrywart or anything, but what about the bad weather passing through the Southeast? Isn't that going to affect their flight somehow? Unless I'm wrong, they're not taking a direct flight from KCI to the Bahamas. That means they have to change planes somewhere. I know the news media make it their job to blow everything out of proportion, but from what I'm seeing, the team may have trouble getting there.
Anybody know anything about their itinerary?
Speaking of internet coverage, did anybody else outside of the ESPN blackout area have trouble watching the last 5-10 minutes of the game online? I got way too many frozen screens those last few minutes (even after several reboots), and it's far from the first time. Just wondering if it's ESPN or my ISP...
Let me join in the chorus of Welcomes and Atta Boys for Jesse. Always enjoyed your work for KUSports. I hadn't read the CJ sports section too much...now I've got a good reason!
No problem...I understand that you've got space limitations, and the "other sports" only get the odd mention.
Actually, before the West Virginia game, I was beginning to think KU football WAS an "other sport"...
P.S. Thanks for bringing back the black-on-white setup for comments. As others have said, it might not really be the easiest to read, but it's what our eyes have gotten used to.
I've been having problems trying to click & drag articles to the main body of the post. It seemed to be working in a couple of weeks ago, not so much now. Any suggestions?
Thanks for setting up this category, approx.
It's good to have a place to recognize Jayhawks in non-major sports as well, like the NCAA champions in women's track & field. Hope another KU team can make a title run soon...maybe volleyball?
Thanks for setting up this category, approx.
It's good to have a space to recognize KU athletes and alumni in the non-major sports. The NCAA champion women's track & field team is a good example. Hope we have another team that can pull off a title run soon...volleyball, maybe?
I couldn't find a spot for posts about sports other than BBall and FBall, so this looks like a good a place as any...
Former KU golfer Gary Woodland lost in a playoff today at the PGA tournament in Malaysia. He's really stepped up his game lately, with a win, a second-place and a third-place finish in the past few months.
The guy hits the ball a ton and usually leads the tour in driving distance. He needs to work on his short game, though...missed a 10-footer Sunday that would've given him the win outright. Still, $750K for second place ain't chump change!
Legendary University of Washington coach Don James passed away yesterday at age 80.
He started his career at KU in the mid-1950s as the freshman team coach, while working on his Master's Degree.
RIP Coach James.
Same here...I was a longtime LJW site reader, but only occasionally posted. Glad to see a lot of the old faces (or at least names) from their pre-Facebook days. Hope Jaybate joins the group soon. Despite his long-winded posts and obscure historical references (or maybe because of them, come to think of it), his analysis is usually spot-on.
