Time-Warner seems associated with stiffing the fans of some of Americas iconic teams. They have a deal with Direct TV that shuts out almost half of Los Angeles. Vin Scully couldn't watch a Dodgers game at his own house!

Rules. Make a team in which you have a salary cap of 18 dollars. Numbers by each player is their salary. The team would be a ‘professional’ college team, but you may base your opinion not only on their college career, but also their pro career. If I’ve got guys out of place, sorry, I’m not an expert :) If there’s a player you absolutely have to have who is not on this list, substitute him, tell us who you are taking out. I’ve included a few ideas for others here. Remember we’ve got to Wayne S’s so make sure you specify Selden or Simien! Friendly constructive criticisms of each others teams is encouraged!

So you got the summer blues? • Jun 25, 2014 02:32 AM

I ordered the DVD and get truly sickened by Billy P (sorry, I'm a Bears fan, can't even type his last name!) and his biased commenting. I never minded Billy until that game either, but for some reason he called it like was John Calipari's daddy.

Speaking of title games, there's a lot of rumors of Carmello to the Bulls. Kirk and Carmelo on the same team is an interesting concept. I'm sure NBA players have lots of carry overs from College days, but I'd guess Kirk is still sick about that best chance at a ring.

Summer Quiz: Know Your Courts • Jun 25, 2014 02:26 AM

I don't know why but I think the bottom pic is Moscow and the top might be Rome or somewhere else Italian.

How soon til late night?

ESPN counting down top coaches • Jun 22, 2014 01:44 AM

It will be interesting to see how our guys shake out in this. Not sure the criteria used but to put Roy at 15 is preposterous. Larry at 20 something is even worse.

Jay Wright ahead of Larry? Fred ahead of Roy and Larry, and even Steve Fisher who was 6-0 with an NCAA title to his credit 6 games into his coaching career?

I pretend to know a lot about hoops, but I've not heard of McKillop. I know I could look him up, but that doesn't change it.

These things always generate interesting controversy. I'm internetless this summer, sitting in a McD's right now catching up, so I probably won't check out their countdown til later.

Rock Chalk Satisfaction ! • Jun 13, 2014 03:23 PM

Since it's sometimes hard to compare generations I'll just go from my time at KU and mention my favorites from 'era's.

85-88 Danny, 'nuf said.

Post Danny to 93 Adonis Jordan.

Mid 90's Pierce

Late 90's-early 2000's. Our one relative downtime during Roy's tenure. No one stands out.

Roys last years Kirk, with a slightl 2nd place with Keith and Nick and Drew.

Prelude to a championship Wayne

Late 2000's Mario

Recent years BMac or Joel

Rock Chalk Satisfaction ! • Jun 13, 2014 03:17 PM

@741hawk

Interesting take, but could you argue the same in the NBA? I think he won 1 title. NBA coaches not know how to maximize his talent there either? I'm not sure.

Rock Chalk Diss-appointment! • Jun 11, 2014 04:21 PM

@nuleafjhawk Do you remember the bus driver that drove the football team bus into the wing of the jet at, I think, Auburn in the mid 80's? Now that one may take the cake!

Rock Chalk Diss-appointment! • Jun 11, 2014 03:02 PM

@nuleafjhawk

By the time you're done you're going to name everyone down to the bus driver, who I'm disappointed with for getting us to the airport to lose all those NCAA games.

Rock Chalk Diss-appointment! • Jun 10, 2014 06:22 PM

Drew Gooden. Here's why. He gave us some great years obviously, but left a year early, with a National Championship clearly in reach. Had he stayed we may have been one of the great teams in NCAA history. I never blame a kid for getting that NBA check, but I do blame kids for not having the foresight to delay gratification for something that would be far more memorable than a few million more dollars. I'm not surprised he's bounced around the league.

Wilt Chamberlain! Why? Anyone who is capable of scoring 100 points in an NBA game surely could have scored two more points in a triple OT national championship game! I jest on Wilt of course.

Wigs. Seriously. I know he had great stats for a freshman, but I guess I was expecting Durant type of performances, and not complete disappearances from games throughout the season. His missed layups really wore on me during the season as well. Maybe he's just a victim of hype, but I never warmed up to him.

Tyler Self just because it sounds funny to say he belongs here.

Jaybate because of his shoe contract theories. (No malice JB, just playin!)

NBA Finals Thread • Jun 09, 2014 03:31 PM

I've repeated this story before, so if you've heard it forgive me. But there was an incredible bench of coaches at KU in the mid 80's. With Larry Brown one season was Calipari. No explanation needed. The next season Popovich was a one year unpaid assistant under Larry. Pop went to Pomona Pitzer the next year which explains why KU played them in our championship season. I was at that game and even Pop couldn't prevent a 60-70 point blowout! Now add in there Bill Self as an assistant in 85-86, and my goodness, there may not have been a finer coaching staff ever assembled! Or you could say Larry Brown is the greatest developer of coaching talent ever. Either way, KU comes out looking pretty good!

Help me out with a little exercise. • Jun 09, 2014 02:36 PM

@justanotherfan

You just muddied the waters! I've got to narrow my list down to a few players at each position! Details to come soon!

Help me out with a little exercise. • Jun 09, 2014 02:23 AM

@globaljaybird

Well I need the input of old timers. I just turned 50 but was unaware of KU basketball until 1985 when I enrolled there. Therefore other than the few big names prior to Danny (and I!) enrolling at KU Im not too familiar with their accomplishments. We must have had some good players because we won lots of games!

Help me out with a little exercise. • Jun 09, 2014 01:41 AM

I apologize for not more replies. We are currently away from internet, so for an hour a day I sit in MCd's where we summer and go through this. I am not an expert on KU players and their exact positions. I just listed as I remember. Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming! Like I said, I'm going somewhere with this that could be kind of fun. I'll check back tomorrow!

Help me out with a little exercise. • Jun 07, 2014 08:54 PM

There's a reason why I would put others on the center list.

Will Roy Lose His Job? • Jun 07, 2014 02:54 AM

Help me out with a little exercise. • Jun 07, 2014 02:50 AM

This will lead to a second post in a few days. I've picked a top 5 at each position for Jayhawk players. The list is very last 30 years oriented. Tell me who you should be on here that I missed or who shouldn't be on here that I have listed.

Center Wilt C Clyde L, Cole A, Greg O, Joel,

Power Forward Danny, Wayne, Kieff, TRob, Darrell

Small Forward Paul, Nick C, BMac, Keith L, Raef

Shooting Guard Wigs, BRush, Mario, Jeff B, Ron K

Point Guard JoJo, Kirk, Sherron, Cedric, Jacque

Omissions? Richard Scott, Darnell V, Marcus M, Calvin T, Wayne S, BH Born, Drew G, Greg Dreiling, Adonis Jordan (2 final fours)

If you want to include success as a pro in your ranks then certainly do so. Like I said I'm doing something with this that might be another interesting exercise.

Thanks!

Funny to hear the name Bruce Pearl because he attends the church where my wife's cousin is the pastor. Just one week ago, I spoke with my uncle in law who was at a wedding at that church and knows Bruce, and speaks glowingly about him. I've never had any positive vibes about him until that conversation, and that goes all the way back to his Iowa asst. days when he snitched on Illinois! I do agree though, not sure why schools would take chances on guys like this.

Thon Maker? Any Takers? • Jun 01, 2014 02:02 AM

That's too far down the road for me to think about! But 7 footers are always nice to have around!

Why Not Deregulate D1? • May 27, 2014 05:22 PM

@justanotherfan Yeah, but the haves in JB's scenario would be loaded with cash because they went to the league and decided to come back.

@jaybate since Lebron James didn't play college ball, could he conceivably suit up for KU for a season or two just for kicks? I might be in favor of that!

Why Not Deregulate D1? • May 27, 2014 03:03 PM

I like some of it, but can you imagine a wads of cash laden youngster flopping in the pros coming back to college and rubbing elbows with teammates who will never play in any league, not even in the Djibouti pro league? This creates a haves and have nots on one team and dissension would be rife. Plus those kids wouldn't go to too many classes. So it might not work.

But it might, but it sure would be confusing for us fans, and a team going down the tubes would not like it as they would lose even more players.

ACC 30 Second Shot Clock • May 23, 2014 10:02 PM

Can't believe no one has ripped on my entire 35 seconds of the shot clock Badgers!

NBA Rookie Ben McLemore • May 23, 2014 10:00 PM

I'm not surprised. His shooting was sub-par, but he did come on strong towards the end of the season as I recall.

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk To KU • May 23, 2014 09:59 PM

I've been very busy with end of school stuff and two graduations to boot, so maybe someone has addressed this. Is there any possibility that this underaged kid doesn't meet NCAA eligibility standards and would have to sit a year before suiting up?

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk To KU • May 21, 2014 10:06 PM

When I first saw his name a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned it here and literally got no response. Well coach Self must follow my posts because he had enough sense to sign the Ukrainiak.

@ParisHawk Brilliant! Get it trademarked!

The phonetic spelling @joeloveshawks gave us My-kuy-luke provides absolutely no guidance on how to pronounce the middle syllable! And his first name? Forgetaboutit!

I'm just glad we get to call him Jayhawk!

Summer Vacation plans • May 18, 2014 08:29 PM

So you get to play coach Self for a day. School is out and you're sending your players home with instructions to work on something in preparation for the following season. What do you tell them? It can be physical, mental, both, something else, even don't come back I guess. What would you tell coach Self to do with his summer vacation? (I'm not an x's or o's guy, I generally follow the ball, so my opinions are just my observations, probably groundless!)

I have a few. We all know Connor can knock down the three ball in a non-competitive situation. We need him to become a 50% tre shooter in games. So he needs to get out to the playgrounds of NY, Chi and LA and play in summer competition and get comfortable jacking them up and making them.

Selden. Consistency. How to develop that is for the experts.

Perry. Toughness. Maybe tag along with Connor to the summer leagues of NY, Chi, and LA and learn to become assertive even against bigger stronger players.

Mason. Self control. Watch tapes of Collins and learn when to not drive it to the hole against three guys.

What do you got for the guys? I'd like to know.

@Wishawk

Yeah, I knew it happened then, just didn't word it clearly.

I like what happened to Frank Kaminsky after he grew from a 6' 3" guard in HS to a 7 footer in college.

I really don't see the problem in getting this kid if we can.

Who is Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk? • May 16, 2014 02:34 PM

@konkeyDong

"but this isn't about racism" I was in no way implying racism in anyone. I have called people out for it in years past over on KUSports, but I was really just trying to make light of the current debate we're having.

As for the athletic/non-athletic question, I have cringed over the years as I watch my 2nd love, UW. They have had more than the usual number of white players over the years, football included. And for years I hear people describe a top 20 UW team in either sport as being un-athletic, or not as athletic. And I think it is just preposterous. Their guard who was their only Senior this year Ben Brust, was white, 6'1" and averaged 5 rebounds a game over his last two seasons. How is that not athletic? How is it not athletic for Frank Kaminksy to dominate the tournament's first four rounds and for a bunch of non athletes to come within a missed shot of playing for the title?

These kids are incredibly athletic that are playing at this level. They may not run quite as fast but they still have blinding speed. They are strong, quick, have extraordinary hand-eye coordination, and would run circles around all of us.

I always found it interesting when I was at KU and would go to Robinson (?) gymnasium for pickup basketball. During the offseason for football there'd always be a lot of football players in there. During my years at KU the football team was the laughingstock of the nation (along with KState). The football players playing ball in there were incredibly athletic, white, black, whatever. They'd go shirts and skins and I'd just gawk at these guys, sounds weird I know. They'd dunk, run, fly through the sky, do amazing things on the court. Yet these incredible athletes were not capable of winning more than one or two games a year on the football field.

My point is they're all athletic and to inject race into the discussion is missing the point of what makes a great team a great team.

Andrew White to Transfer • May 09, 2014 01:55 PM

We are recruiting a very young (he'd be enrolling as a 17 year old), eligible for this coming season, guard from somewhere in Europe.

"KU, which has one scholarship to give in recruiting, is reportedly recruiting Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound wing from Cherkassy, Ukraine, who turns 17 in June. He has been compared to NBA player Manu Ginobili.

Other schools reportedly involved include SMU, Virginia, Oregon and Michigan.

He averaged 25.2 points, 8.0 boards and 3.4 assists for the Ukrainian National Team in the 2013 FIBA Europe Under 16 championships. He scored two points off 1-of-4 shooting (0-3 from three) with two turnovers and a steal while playing 13 minutes in the World Select Team’s loss to Team USA at the Nike Hoops Summit on April 12 in Portland.

KU’s Kelly Oubre and Cliff Alexander had 14 and six points respectively for the U.S. At the Summit, Mykhailiuk told draftexpress.com he was trying to decide whether to attend a U.S. college or sign with a European pro team.

“He is the best prospect in Europe in a long time, probably since Ricky Rubio,” writes nbadraft.net. “What Mykhaliuk showed at the recent U16 European championships was a mix of athleticism, skills and feel for the game that is extremely rare to see in a European player, or any player of his age, for that matter.”

Does this increase our prospects of landing him?

Snakes • May 09, 2014 01:45 PM

I saw a little blurb today where TRob went to his locker in San Antonio and there was a rattlesnake there. Yikes. Talk about San Antonio having a home court advantage.

So thinking about snakes and KU basketball, who are the players, coaches, refs, announcers, etc. whom you would be a consider to be a snake?

I'd like to nominate Billy Tubbs. A first class slithery slimy sleazy snake. If you're too young to remember Billy Tubbs just imagine a losing coach in a NC game telling the media he knows they (Oklahoma) was the better team.

One story, that apparently happened the year before I arrived on campus, went like this. (please correct any factual errors, I heard this, didn't witness). KU and OU were playing for the conference championship in AFH. The game went to OT where OU blew us out. Tubbs called timeout so his team could celebrate the championship on our court before the game was over. I think I heard he flipped off our crowd that day as well.

Got any other snakes?

Instead of the Yum center you'd think they'd name it the Crum center.

@RockChalkinTexas

Since I'm a pessimist, I will speak of the negative Pat Forde of Yahoo. That guy writes so much stuff I disagree with, but this takes the cake. No one had even heard of Hinkle until Butler did their thing. (I know it was in the movie Hoosiers, but that doesn't count).
A brand new arena in Louisville? What is this guy on? I've seen games there on TV, while it is rocking, it has little charm.

I think ours and Dukes are 1-2 hands down. I do love the quirkiness of Vanderbilts arena but of course they're irrelevent. I've gone to quite a few LSU games since moving here and if they ever had a powerhouse it would really rank up there. It can get loud even when it's two-thirds full.

If Nebraska could become relevant their place could become popular too. It's a great new arena that has a lot of character.

Devonte' Graham News Headlines • May 05, 2014 03:04 PM

Brunson would be a great pickup. Chicago tough, winner, good pedigree, etc. He scored 56 points, that's not a typo, in the state semifinals against Whitney Young and Jahlil Okafor. He was all state as a sophomore as well. His team beat 11 Tribune top 20 teams this year. He is the Real Deal with a capital R and D! Mr. Brunson, your table is ready at AFH!

Tharpe Exits: "Addition By Subtraction" • May 02, 2014 02:26 PM

Graham's decision is nigh... • May 02, 2014 02:06 PM

@icthawkfan316

Well, I didn't read Keegan! I generally don't.

Here's the thing with Tharpe. He reminds me of Tyshawn. Tharpe has had some really good games. Taylor broke out his senior year and was arguably our best or 2nd best player at season's end. Now I'm not sure Tharpe has the skill level of Tyshawn. I guess we'll never know if Tharpe had a forthcoming breakout season.

Tharpe Exits: "Addition By Subtraction" • May 02, 2014 01:59 PM

I think Matt Tait's analysis is very good on Tharpe departing.

I'll get on my soapbox, and will probably be told to get off my soapbox too, but he should be with his daughter. She could care less that he plays basketball. She wonders why her daddy isn't home every night. This scourge of fatherlessness is plaguing our society. I've worked for almost twenty years with kids who are bearing the scars of fathers not doing their God-given job of raising their kids. It's ugly, no other way to put it. I hope it's not too late for them to establish a strong relationship.
