Technical questions.

On occasion, I'd say, one of every ten times, I will click reply and the reply box doesn't come up. Then sometimes, it will come up and after typing I hit submit and the box disappears with nothing submitted. This happens frequently enough that I copy my longer posts, like this one, so I can just paste it into a new reply box.

And more often, maybe half the time, no more than 10 messages will appear on a thread. I have to leave KUBuckets and try it again, then it may show up.

I'm no Bill Gates, so if you have any tips for me, I'd appreciate it, because I really enjoy this thing you put together.

Picking the Elite 8 β€’ Jan 25, 2014 03:49 PM

@bskeet Creighton is in the Big East, not quite what I'd call a Mid-Major anymore!

@JayDocMD I've got to defend my Badgers! Just as we get on the defensive when people say we choke in the tourney a lot, I get defensive by what you wrote. Bo Ryan has lost twice in the first round of the tourney, including last year when they had 10 or 11 regular season losses. He has made the sweet 16 half of his seasons in Madison. At that point he has lost, games which usually match how they're seeded, so not upsets. When he has lost in that game to higher seeded teams, it's been teams like Davidson in '08. Remember how close they came to derailing our NC dreams? Another was Butler which came within a bank shot of winning the NC.

The year that hurts the most for Badgers team was 07 when they were top ranked at one point in February. Their center, a guy named Brian Butch, got hurt against OSU and didn't play again. Without their starting center they lost in the 2nd round to UNLV.

So it's not as it seems with the Badgers whom I was high as a kite on before their 3 game skid which hopefully doesn't turn to 4 games today against Purdue.

As for the rest of these, good analysis!

@Lulufulu85, Dawson broke his hand during a film session! He slammed the table in disgust in something he saw.

TCU last year ranks as the worst loss for KU since I've been a fan. It doesn't sting as much as the various NCAA shockers, but in terms of us as a heavy favorite going against an inept team, well it tops the cake to me.

@approxinfinity One comment on each story:
Why are the Bears green? Most Bears I've seen are brownish, blackish, or whitish.

Alexander's Jam Time Band is playing to rave reviews in Chicago. I read the papers there and he is putting up some monster numbers against top teams.

Wooden awards don't matter much just like Heismanns. It's a nice honor, but it's not a predictor of success, just ask Tim Tebow, Ron Dayne, etc. etc. etc.

Embiid is very good, so is Wiggins. Embiid should have made the Wooden list, but three years ago, I bet he never had heard of it.

Sorry to hear about Tyshawn. He played decently when Darren Williams was hurt, thought he might be valued as a backup there but I guess not.

The article on Embiid in the WSJ was nice, but nothing new for us seasoned Jayhawk fanatics.

@KUSTEVE
As a native chicagoan, I still read the sports pages there and boy oh boy, that kid is putting up some monster numbers.

Just ran across this story on Cliff Alexander:

Here's a story on Mark Brandmeyer and family. Mark is the guy who has Selden's Adidas imprint on his forehead. It explains how he can afford a front row seat at a Kansas basketball game!

http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2009/05/04/story3.html?page=all β†—

If Baylor shot their FTs from the 3 point line, they might have won this game. Their percentage was better there.

How about that for a rule change? Take your FT's from the 3 point line if you want. They'll be worth 2 instead of 1. Teams will no longer foul at the end to prevent a 3 piont shot when leading by three. I think it needs to be explored.

A lot of criticism of Smart here for what I'd say is smart play. Don't blame Smart for fooling refs, blame the refs for Smart fooling them.

As for Gottlieb folks, give it up. Who cares what he thinks about our team? Why do you get so worked up about it?

@CaptnMo, I don't know a lot about basketball, but to my knowledge the T's don't accrue like they do in the League.

@Highelitemajor, I like your analysis of the players yesterday, well done.

@Jaybate, I just thought of a new saying, "there's no I in team"!! Oh, but there is a ME!

@drgnslayr I may never visit KUBuckets again after seeing that website!

@JayHawkFanToo To me (bears fan) that's like seeing coach with a Missouri Tiger.

@HighEliteMajor
I know you don't think so, and you're getting to me and I'm starting to wonder as well. I think what we miss is knowing what happens in practice and maybe these guys aren't performing what coach is practicing with them.

@bskeet

I wish Keegans article described the five games a little more in detail that Wiggins had top games against ranked teams. I know Duke was one, Florida was one, KState and Iowa State. San Diego State was the other I think. 3-2 record in games Wigs shines, and 9-2 I think in the other games where he blends into the team a bit more.

So does KU play better when Wigs is not the star?

I've shown here before where Mason's 4 best games are all KU losses, which are basically Tharpes worst games.

I hope instead of a flip today that Smart does a flop.

I hope the game is on here in SEC country instead of SEC basketball.

I don't get worked up about announcers too much. I enjoy just about all of them, except Brent Musberger, who doesn't work for CBS anymore, so I think we're safe today. I do have to tolerate him every time I watch the 88 championship game.

I always liked Billy Packer until I watched the 08 game and realized he was blatantly cheering for Memphis for some reason.

I believe that we need better bench production. I noticed the ISU game, obviously a success, but nonetheless, a success only from the starters and Traylor. The rest contributed almost nothing.

Black fouled out with a total of 5 minutes playing time. Do the fouls per minute math on that one.

I, and most of you as well, better enjoy the Joel show while we have it. Man I hate this OAD garbage. We deserve better, as do the fans of the other OAD schools, even Kentucky.

Because when you think about it, Kentucky might be looking at an UCLA style dynasty if Davis and company had stuck around. Not that we'd want that, but 30 years from now people are going to recognize Florida because they won back to back championships because guys stayed when they didn't have to.

And we could be looking at an UCLA style dynasty should our stars stay put. I have no illusions that will happen.

@drgnslayr I love maps more than anything in Geography, therefore I am intrigued by this one. I don't quite understand it however. It just doesn't show # of viewers per zip code as it links viewers to some sort of marketing index. I have no experience in marketing.

This map seems to indicate that eastern Kentucky couldn't give a rip about their Wildcats, but we probably know that isn't true. It isn't highly populated there and it is also quite poor, so is that what this is showing, where people with some money watch college hoops? Urban areas seem to show up, so it has to be linked somehow to population centers.

Do you have a link to that map? I'd like to examine it a little more closely.

@JayHawkFanToo I'll take your word for it. :)

@drgnslayr I have zero aptitude in physics, but I would like to see that picture of you in front of the dome.

All very interesting Jaybate! I haven't heard of her and that work, but it sounds fascinating indeed. Now to link it to basketball, hmmm... the possibilities are limitless.

For example. There is something about the sightlines at the Superdome that affect KU more than their opponents. How else to explain our glaring failures in games in that building? I mean poor shooting alone doesn't explain 14 of 32 FTs against Syracuse. And I think I might know the answer. From my seat there for the Kentucky game I couldn't even see the rims. And I had great seats half way (row 26) up the upper deck, so seeing them from there shouldn't have been a problem at all.

Who is doing the game for CBS? β€’ Jan 17, 2014 07:10 PM

Crap, CBS? The local CBS station shows SEC games. Sighh.

Jan 17 Headlines: The World According to Tharpe β€’ Jan 17, 2014 05:57 PM

@RockChalkinTexas East coast bias doesn't just exist with ESPN. NBC in my opinion is notorius for not being aware of anything west of the Appalachians. Tune into their hockey telecasts and see who's playing for proof.

@drgnslayr It really is a fascinating place. I majored in Geography at KU. As a geographer it is a really fascinating place. As a teacher, 3 days off for Mardi Gras tops the cake!

@wissoxfan83 The auto format changed my post for some reason. Wichita was supposed to be 10, Duke 9, etc.

@drgnslayr Yep for now dragon! I've lived a rich and full life which has led me to some great places and it's where I am now. We live just north of Baton Rouge. LSU basketball is depressing in the way KU football is.

My top ten teams I'd like to see us play:

  1. Wichita St. Home and home

  2. Duke Home and home

  3. Syracuse in Allen Field House, and then us in their stupid dome.

  4. Butler in Hinkle but with Stevens coming back as coach.

  5. Miss Ouri One game a year in KC.

  6. Minnesota in their old barn. A great place to watch a game.

  7. Kentucky home and home. It may be ugly for us some years, but it will be ugly for them some years.

  8. LSU in Baton Rouge, every year, so I can see us play every year and only pay about 5 bucks for the privilege.

  9. UNC home and home. This would be great theater. Roy coming back to AFH. Imagine that!

  10. Wisconsin home and home. My secondary college hoops fanaticism. I'd cheer for KU but UW winning wouldn't be bad for me. The Kohl center is a great venue for college basketball.

Jan 17 Headlines: The World According to Tharpe β€’ Jan 17, 2014 02:46 PM

β€œWe had a chance to win that game, and we didn’t do it,” Self said. β€œAnd he did do a backflip, and I watched it on tape. I thought it was beautiful form. I thought he tucked just at the right time and got full extension. I thought it was very impressive.”

I don't think Bill Self is too worried about a backflip.

Lumpy you best be joking!

What is the deal with UK and Coach Cal? β€’ Jan 16, 2014 05:30 PM

"When you leave KU you'll know how to play the game we call basketball." If I was a troll, which I hope I've proved I'm not, I would take that line and make some remarks about how our guys do in the pros. 3 Self players from KU are making it in the pro's so far, Mario, and the Morris twins. BMac I think will be good, but he's not showing it so far. Withey is getting a minute a game. Darrell I think might have been better, but injuries may have diminished his game. Brandon is starting to get playing time, but we'll see if he returns from his injury.

I don't know why our players don't do better in the pros. In some ways I don't care. I want to see KU win.

@Blown I was there in '88 when KState snapped our 50 game or so home winning streak. It was the first time I had seen KU lose as a student and I was a senior.

I do agree with the others that you should probably avoid KU home games though, it looks like you must intimidate Self or something. Must be your wisdom and knowledge of the game and he feels threatened by your presence.

I love watching Embiid's amazing coordination. Because he's not real fluid right now, he does these awkward moves that are totally legal, that get the fans of the opponents riled up when it happens, that even make us think, 'oh, that's a travel', and then he scores, or passes to a wide open cutter or three baller.

He makes moves that are of a person who didn't grow up watching basketball 24-7, who wasn't a gym rat, who probably didn't play a whole bunch of video games. So he's making it up as he goes along and it's really fun to watch.

That stretch when he took over the ISU game the other night should be preserved for a KU time capsule, just like we wished there was a Wilt or Clyde KU time capsule. It was Reggie Milleresque when he sunk the Knicks with those bombs, or Jordanesque when he shrugged in the Portland game. It wasn't Monet or Rembrandt, but it was loud, brash and very effective.

I really hate that we are only get to see guys like Joel and Andrew and BMac for 1 year.

Speaking of BMac, his minutes at Sacramento have diminished greatly. Every time I check a box it looks like he's struggling to find his shot. We all hope the young man can turn it around.

As for the Smart flip, I don't get too worked up about. He was a freshman in college and just won a game, that for him right now, is the highlight of his career. I don't get into all this 'he dissed us and we ought to make him pay' stuff. Winning the game is what will do the talking for us.

I wonder as I wander..... β€’ Jan 15, 2014 08:17 PM

There'd be a whole lot more people yelling NBAMac during KU games on Jesse's live blog if BMac was still here.

There'd be a lot less announcers fawning over Wiggins on KU telecasts.

There'd be no Wilt and Wigs SI cover.

We'd not be discussing this right now.

Ben's mom would still be waiting for her dream house, so for that, we say, good choice Ben!

@nuleafjhawk Ha, I knew that mention would raise some eyebrows! When I was at KU I knew some KU football players and they were evil!

Jan 13: Post-game Roundup -- KU vs Iowa State β€’ Jan 14, 2014 04:01 PM

The cloudy lining to this sunny game is that our bench provided nothing besides Traylor. Only 6 guys played double figure minutes. Traylor fouled out in 5 minutes of playing time. Even with refs calling fouls on us just for looking at an ISU player that's hard to do.

Two months ago we were all gaga over playing 10 or 11 guys. It's not gonna happen. We may puzzle why, but it's not. Mason's leash is suddenly very short, of course the way Naadir was playing we didn't want much Mason. Greene and Frankamp's confidence is wavering. They literally get the hook for any mistake and by mistake I mean missed shots, or opponents scoring.

When Satan lied to Adam and Eve. If that doesn't happen, they don't sin, thus there's no evil in the world. If there's no evil, there's no Missouri, ISU fans, coach K, east coast bias, Bob Huggins, Billy Tubbs, and Kansas football.

ISU β€’ Jan 13, 2014 03:53 PM

@drgnslayr Do I have to delete my I-35 and I-80 quips?

ISU β€’ Jan 12, 2014 10:51 PM

I did a little Newellish stats. This confirmed my general feeling about how we play when guards our guards are on.

When Tharpe hands out dimes, the team cashes in with wins. He's averaging 4 assists in KU's losses and 5.9 in KU's wins.

Opponents want to make Mason play. His four highest minutes games are all losses. He's averaging 11.5 points in those games, but his average in wins is 5.5.

ISU β€’ Jan 12, 2014 09:49 PM

Jan 11: Post-game Roundup: KU vs K State β€’ Jan 12, 2014 04:12 AM

This week the Jayhawks made the nation sit up and notice that the team is in the recovery mode from their funk. And the nation is noticing the following:

Selden getting it. And it's becoming more likely we'll be losing him.

When Wigs A game is in the house, the other team will be run clear out of the house.

Ellis plays much better when he's not sick like he was last Sunday.

Embiid popping threes and popping opponents in the head. One's good, the other not. His footwork is astonishing.

When Tharpe hands out dimes, the team cashes in with wins. He's averaging 4 assists in KU's losses and 5.9 in KU's wins.

When the nation learns of Jamari's life story, they'll be more inspired than the consistant relief he provides the team consistently night in and night out.

Watch out for Connor Frankamp as he gains confidence.

Tarik is fouling at a rate of 10 per 40 minute game. Ellis is fouling at a rate of about 2 per 40 minute game.

Make Mason play. His four highest minutes games are all losses. He's averaging 11.5 points in those games, but his average in wins is 5.5.

Bruce Weber is the best thing to ever happen to Kansas St. for Kansas.

PERRY ELLIS SMILED !!! β€’ Jan 09, 2014 03:42 PM

Nuleaf, I noticed you mention your wife a lot. Does she tolerate your KU fanaticism as long as you mention her regularly in your comments? Mine doesn't, I have to linger on this site when she's not looking. When she looks I have the Wall St. Journal ready to pop up on the screen.

Conner Frankamp Hyperbole β€’ Jan 09, 2014 03:38 PM

Vail, one good game doesn't make someone a starter. Lots of players can have a nice game. Remember Tarik against Georgetown. What has he done since? While I like your posts I think this one is kind of a knee jerk reaction, especially the Kirk line! But let's hope he has figured something out.

BTW, I defended him over on KUSports before their demise. People were saying he's not athletic enough, won't be able to make it. I said often that someone who is ranked 30th in the country by people who supposedly know about such things should be able to come in here and play consistently good against top competition. I hope I'm right because I think we've got a four year player in Connor.

Jan 9: Post-game Roundup: KU vs OU β€’ Jan 09, 2014 03:30 PM

@truehawk93 There was a call he didn't like and he spontaneously erupted. With my DVR at FF, Clark looked really fast.

Jan 9: Post-game Roundup: KU vs OU β€’ Jan 09, 2014 02:55 PM

@bskeet What I liked: Selden scoring after the first two minutes of the game.

What I didn't like: Selden scoring after the first two minutes of the game. I'm holding out hope we'll get him back for another year or two. More games like last night, probably won't happen.

What I liked: Scoring seemingly at will.

What I didn't like: The other team scoring seemingly at will.

What I liked: Connor making some shots.

What I didn't like: Connor not making some shots in the non-conf portion of the season.

What I liked: My DVR. I didn't get home til 10:15. I'm never missing a KU game again!

What I didn't like: My DVR, to get to bed at a decent time I watched it on FF the entire game. You get the general idea of what's happening.

What I liked: Bill Self's technical.

What I didn't like: The call that led to it.

What I liked: Beating OU.

What I didn't like: Everything having to do with OU. Kruger is a classy guy I guess but my memory of OU in the 80's and their idiot coach and players lingers 30 years later.

What I liked: Big 12 action...Finally!

"Newell: Self wants to see more energy, emotion from quiet Jayhawks."

With that quote I am convinced that Bill Self reads KUBuckets to help prepare for the next game. Many of us observed the same.

I won't offer coach any tips. I'm basically a ball watcher so I don't have the intricacies down like some of you do, but if he asks, I'll tell him who here to read.

PER statistics back-up posters on this site. β€’ Jan 07, 2014 06:46 PM

Thanks justanotherfan, Not sure what to think of these stats. Baseball is overrun by them, most are meaningless to all but the few stat geeks. WAR? On base plus slugging? I understand these may help GM's and such, but for me, I'm content with old standby's!

Did Bill Self go too far? β€’ Jan 07, 2014 05:29 PM

Interesting post DD. I think the schedule lines up more with what KU, and most teams in fact, used to do. The non-conf portion was stout. Believe it or not the year Louisville won in '86 KU played them twice in the regular season and beat them twice! My three years on campus I saw blue bloods named Duke, Louisville, Kentucky, to name a few. Some KU students in recent years so no blue bloods in AFH. If we played them they were on neutral floors. Even this year, tough schedule, but the best team to come to AFH thus far? SDState whom I suspect we'd beat in a best of seven 4-2.

As for the discussion of this team being without heart or character, I kind of agree. It's hard to quantify such a statement. It's hard to look at them and say they seem not to care, but that's just the feeling one gets watching them.

I'll go Jaybate on us and rate the players, since I'm a teacher, with a letter grade

Joel A Perry B+ Wiggins B Tharpe B Selden C-
Tarik D (without the Georgetown game, an F) Traylor B+ Mason One minute it's an A, next it's an F, so I guess a C Not enough work to grade the others.

Does KU win the Big 12 β€’ Jan 07, 2014 04:27 PM

We've lost three winnable games.

We've lost one where it felt like we never had a chance.

We've lost to four teams all ranked higher than us.

We're going to lose several more winnable games the way this season is shaping up.

We're also going to win some 'loseable' games as the team improves.

So I predict we'll learn from our experiences and win more loseable games than lose winnable games.

We'll tie for the league title is how it will shake down. We'll get the tie with about 4 losses.

We'll enter the dance with a tough draw as the four seed, with 8 losses. Lose in the Big XII tourney and we'll have 9 losses, dropping us to a 6 seed. Magic happens when we're a six seed and we win it all on the back of Joel and the Miracles.

PER statistics back-up posters on this site. β€’ Jan 07, 2014 04:17 PM

Forgive my ignorance, but PER stands for what exactly?

Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs SDSU β€’ Jan 07, 2014 12:05 AM

@JayHawkFanToo We probably helped those four teams be ranked higher than us by virtue of them beating us!

Our ranking absolutely helped those teams. But they have continued to win as well. Their combined record: 49-6

SDSU and Florida were the two that took it to us more. The CU and Villanova games seemed to be within our grasp.

Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs SDSU β€’ Jan 06, 2014 01:32 PM

One reason we lost is that their bigs were very athletic. I was impressed. The sportswriters should be impressed and rate this team high.

I hope I'm wrong but we may look at this year as the great OAD experiment at KU and judge it as a failure. And we better hope these underachieving hyped individuals find it within themselves to stick around for another year or two.
