The importance of a shot fake.
Two hours before our game with Florida,Texas will play at Kentucky. #5 vs. #1 all over again. We will have a greater understanding about our task in the big 12 after this game. Size vs. Size.
We all seem to have become an extension of Coach Self vicariously. Many complain that coach doesn't let those who need playing time - play. Many times his answer has been "I just want the best five on the court." a big lead can quickly be gone in todays NCAA div 1. I want Greene to be the big scorer that he was in high school, same for Kelly, but against MSU I wanted Greene out of the game after 2 minutes. We KU fans on this site and the 16,3000 who are at every game understand why someone is or is not playing. When Perry found his MoJo after barely getting off the bench as a Freshman and making the All Big 12 Tournament team, we had a new hero. He is very smart and knew that being yelled at in practice was not for humiliation purposes but to steel him for what was ahead. I don't care if he's quiet as long as he scores and plays defense and attacks every game like he learned his Freshman year. Some can't cut it early, but like many greats who have come before, bench time at KU is the rule until you get to the point where you are trusted to be on the court. We cheer for the walk-ons at the end of the game for the role they play. They know they aren't starters but what they do for the team in practice earns them cheers when they occasionally make a basket. For the ones that are on scholarship, the reality of their deficiencies despite what assets they have might kill the minutes they are allowed. Such was the case with Conner. Frank is about his same height, but keeps the other PG out of the lane and smothers them on the trey line. I hope Conner finds the 30 points per game like he had in high school, He was one of my favorite players while he was here, but KU is defense, without it, you are a liability.
I think we beat Florida. I think we beat Florida because of the way these last 5 games have played out. I was so crushed by the UK game that I had given up hope of us getting #11, or even a trip back to at least the sweet 16. What blew my mind and restored my faith was the second half defense played as a team. Jamari had a bad game against UT but when it came time to bend the knees and slide, when it came time to block out, he was playing Bill Self defense. The outside perimeter was defended, MSU got cold because we made them speed up to avoid quick double teams. The next KU/UK game will be scripted like the last KU/MU game. We'll be on defense with a one point lead and Jamari will be put into the game to add full court pressure and he will enter the game like Kevin Young did - with a grin on his face. I was a doubter, but now, I'm a believer. Remember, Mari was grinning when he stepped to the free throw line.
I thought Brady as a senior was as equal on defense as Travis. Brady was also the best at feeding the post. Right now Frank, Wayne and Svi are good at getting it inside.

If anyone has other Gator alums, please post their pictures. I've been trying to stay away from the athletes like Tim Tebow and Chris Collinsworth. and going for the esoteric and infamous. Erin, although she is making a Butt load of money, no pun intended, for her Laxative ads, she too is in the sports realm. It was "Cow Bell" that started this non-athlete trend.
I wonder if Greene's concussion is affecting his play?
KU Sports noted that this year's schedule was suppose to be easier than last, yet in the first 7 games we have faced Calipari, Izzo and Donovan. Coach will show the video of last year when the babies were overwhelmed by a frenzied Gator defense.
I noticed that KU Steve's uncle was an Alum.
Hey folks, not to worry, but James Joyce "Jaybate" has been missing from our site. Hope he's not having health issues again.
Self started to put Greene back in the game but stayed with Mari. Mari had just raced down the court twice on what Izzo said were open Misses and poor transition by his team. Mari was with each of those open fast breaks and bothered both of them and came up with a manly rebound before he would go to the line. We still had the lead and with the Matador defense that Greene was playing and weak passing on offense, I loved that Self told Mari to hit the Free throws and kept him in to play defense rather than risk playing with a weak link. Greene was useless yesterday, and Mari was useless against UT, but against MSU, Mari was a MAN inside at the end.
Does anyone know the All-Tournament team? I know Perry is the MVP. Frank's double-double and his play throughout these four days left no doubt that KU FINALLY has a point guard. His rebounds come with him above rim most of the time.
- Svi - Welcome to the starting line up. Great on offense but better on defense today.
- Welcome back Mari. Fantastic job.
- Perry got all the defensive attention the second quarter so Svi and Frank Took over.
- Self told Dickie V. that Wayne is our best defender. He is. At least he hit his free throws.
- Lucas and his red shirt has paid off. Great foot work and he got all the garbage points.
- Frank could easily have been MVP of the tournament. He will not back down.
- Cliff is still an explosion and the best rebounder at his height I've seen at KU.
- Kelly did not hurt us and gave Svi a rest.
- Greene had a bad day. If you can't play defense, you'll have to sit. I'm sure he knows that
he didn't do well and will come back with a great next game like Traylor did.
The defense now is better than last year. It was exciting to watch in the second half.

Loved the 8 three pointers. Green lights and no benching has really helped. Case in point, Mason shooting and hitting a 3 with less than a minute to play. Playing 3 games in four days explains Svi and Greene alternating minutes and both played great. PERRY IS THE MAN!!!
If we can shoot 3 like yesterday and feed Cliff and Perry, we'll be ok. Our defense was the best I've seen this year. Of course there were no opposing giants.

This will be a difficult game. The Rams beat a Nebraska team ranked fifth in the preseason 14 team big 10. Nebraska has an all-American candidate Terran Petteway. The 3 little bigs will need to muscle up. The line up today will probably reflect a closer mid-season look. BEAT THE RAMS!

I was just thinking how strange this basketball season has started off. UMKC beat Mizzou, Mid-Majors are becoming powerhouses, Mari and Svi are getting more minutes than any of us expected. Rick Barnes didn't get fired and now has a well seasoned team with a superstar freshman. I have no idea who these Jayhawks are. Will Svi start at guard or Wayne? Where's Conner?
For some reason, the rest of the country still thinks we are a great team.
We get the 4th worst beating in the history of Jayhawk Basketball and stay at number 5 in the polls. Sadly, Jaybate, I am afraid you speak the truth. Your early prediction of us not getting a Big 12 title might be true. Texas has two monsters this year with a great point guard. Oklahoma is stacked and we are without a leader on the floor. The only players on the court that did not seem intimidated were Mari and Svi. Self turned this program into a powerhouse that has always been well oiled. He has said publicly that we are a long way from being good. We should believe him. He also said we are going to be good. Once again, we should believe him. Like Fran Tarkington said on SNL, "We'll make it to the Super Bowl again this year and again, we'll lose."
Something is broken in the NCAA when KU can lose by 32 and remain at #5 in the polls. All morning long on Fox Sports there was a debate on whether UK could beat the 76er's.
@ralster - I'm sure last night was Jack Harry's favorite newscast. Larry Brown said that both of the platoons could be ranked number 1 and both could probably win a National Championship. Kentucky will be beaten when they play a good zone team and have a night like they did against Buffalo. Speaking of Mid-Majors, UMKC will be going to the Dance this year for the first time in the weak WAC conference, They were just a better team than Missouri and they were Kicking K-State by 11 points before the half and within two baskets with minutes to go. Greene has been cleared to play. He practiced twice this week. I think having ball handlers in the game is predicated on what happened at Florida last year. We were overwhelmed by a dominating defense that caused Wiggins and Tharpe to panic. Svi, Devonte, Frank and Wayne will make this home game turn out differently against Billy Donovan
and the Gators.
