I just realized how much Buddy Holly looks like Stephan Colbert.
Buddy Holly
In 1959, I lived in the Southwest part of Missouri. One channel of TV that came in late at night. I was in 6th grade and when I went to bed I listened KAAY in Little Rock Arkansas to hear Ray Charles, Little Richard and Buddy Holly. In the days before air conditioning and Color TV's, AM radio was king.
We were driving my father to Joplin as we did every Sunday evening for him to catch the bus back to KC where he worked. As we rode, the news came on the radio that Richie Valens, The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly were killed in a plane crash near Mason City Iowa.
On the way home, The radio station out of Pittsburgh Ks. was playing a tribute to all three with their music. Buddy Holly had the most hits, so mostly his songs were played. I know that Don McLean in "American Pie", couldn't remember if he cried. I know, that night driving home on 71 highway with my mother that I cried.

@RockChalkinTexas look at you and me, trying to make people have fun on this site.
@MoonwalkMafia It is as if this blog has become a debate among Senators who in their hearts think that anything we say will force Bill Self to do things our way. What I find sad is that so many have lost any appreciation as a cheering fan. We right now are rated as the number one team in the country that just beat the other number one team in the country and for some reason there is no joy in some bloggers because we're apparently not doing it the right way and only eventual failure is staring us in the face. We have the highest odds in Vegas to win the Championship, yet being in that position we still are on the short end of the bet which in the end, if KU doesn't win it all, then the small "Sky is Falling Gang" can say, "See I told you so." I love this team and I do not worship at the Alter of Bill Self. We're playing Basketball now at a higher level than we have in 8 years. I personally thought that Bragg and Diallo did fine Monday night. Diallo throwing out of a double team with a crisp pass to an open man for the first time told me that. Like it or not, Coach is about defense first. More minutes are going to happen for the Frosh but I agree with Jaybate that every member of the Bastards has a place and a particular skill that they bring to the table. I thought that Diallo played well and seemed to be every bit as strong as Spangler. Peace to all.
sorry this didn't work. it was a vine of Mari's grab block and floor crash.
I was back from overseas and back in college. The sun was streaming particularly bright when Bud went crazy. None of it was "In you face," everything was done in the flow of the game.
What happened was this and for some reason we won the game. Just wanted to throw some fish food out there. Just wanted to hear the dogs bark. Just wanted to throw some meat into the shark tank
I laughed when Mushburger was talking about how great Mari was playing and that he was a fan favorite at KU. That was probably when the stroke hit about six of our bloggers.
@Crimsonorblue22 Esky is great. Infante is perfect on defense but that's it. Maybe Colon will be the starter and Infante becomes the off day utility guy.
All we need now is a short stop that can hit like Zobrist, a power, everyday man in right field and one more starting pitcher.
Inside out, in rhythm almost tells me it's in as the shot goes up. If there is an open shot, we usually hit it. A lot of film has allowed Coach to give the freedom that these players now enjoy. One more pass to a more open man and Bob Davis yells SWISH!!! The difference with Buddy is that with someone in his grill it is still SWISH.
Your right about the location. More travel for them, ISU is still pissed about OU and will take it out on Tech. Conference play is so much fun and after Big Monday, Ellis and the experienced will talk to the Freshmen about going on the road in the Big 12.
@justanotherfan and getting rebounds and setting picks and playing defense, all of the dirty things that have to be done for the others to get the ball and be open.
Tech will get beat up by ISU. They will have a small crowd for that game and they will get beat or wear themselves out winning or staying close. KU is a different story. everyone shows up when KU is in town and the New Arena will have all the students back for a KU party. Unfortunately for the Tech fans, ISU got there first and we will have fully recovered by Saturday night.
WVU will be a different story. WVU just beat VT that just knocked off #4 Virginia. Huggie always has a team and the Hillbillies will be out in force to yell with their gun toting mascot. The big four will remember last year. With their superstar graduated, C-5 will take care of Goggle Eye. It will be close, but it will be a win that will put us in the driver's seat for #12.
Kentucky beat Duke at the beginning of the year. Pundits began talking about UK and KU right after the Champions tourney. Since that time, KU has gone on a tear, # 1 ranking, and everyone's Final Four pick.
Now, Kentucky has gone on the road against three unranked teams, good teams, but unranked. UCLA, Ohio State and LSU. They have lost all three of those games and do not look anything like the team that beat Duke.
As a Jayhawk fan, I'm somewhat torn between wanting Kentucky to be a powerful, highly ranked powerhouse coming into Allen Fieldhouse and the pleasure of watching the Kitties looking overwhelmed on the road.
I don't see 150 points, I picture this game as being more like the UNC game in the Final Four. My prayer is that KU, OU, WVU and ISU are put in
Brackets where all four could end up in the Final Four.
After this many years, all should realize that Coach is first, last and always a defensive coach. Greene was good against Baylor, not so much Svi. He and Svi both hit a three but we're clearly playing Matador defense. Hunter is the better offensive player but was getting Pushed around inside and had the ball taken away from him twice on rebound attempts. As pretty as this game was, it was still a muscle game. Hence defense and muscle = JT and Lucas. Seth Greenberg said yesterday that both KU and OU have four great players but that no one in the country has five. Our C-5 gives us a better defensive option than most.
ESPN pundits were talking about the game today and Seth Greenberg said that when Mason began guarding Buddy, he did an incredible job. He said it sounds stupid to say when Buddy ended up with 46, but Frank was in his grill with fantastic position. The Bulldog did his job. Buddy was just lights out.
Mick couldn't catch the ball and had two rebounds taken away from him by Spangler. People were tired in the second half, but this was more of a muscle game underneath. Lucas might be slow but he became as fast as the rest when they were tired and he wasn't.
Ranked number 1.
Second highest scoring offense in the country.
109 points against the other #1 ranked team.
You're right about our stale looking offense.
This video of the fans giving Buddy his due makes me a proud Jayhawk fan.
Hunter's steal and a fast break to the three line and with no Jayhawk anywhere near to rebound - SWISH.
How about the Mari block where he just went up and grabbed the ball instead of blocking it. He was undercut and fell 6 ' to a flat splat. I thought he was dead.
Watching the handshake line after the game as each Jayhawk talked to Buddy. Selden, Ellis, Mason and Graham all chatted and gave him a hug. Ellis was his AAU teammate for many years. So much respect from both teams for each other until the double technical with the jawing at Selden and then when the Same Sooner tried to pick up the Jayhawk off the floor, Selden's elbow to stop him simply said, "I'll help my teammate and you can go to hell." It's a credit to Lon and Bill to have achieved this purity for this wonderful game. When Devonte was asked how it felt to be #1, he said, "We think they should also stay #1."
I had a friend who played against Earl "The Pearl" Monroe in college. He said, "I held him to 29 points - in the second half."
Selden and Graham both got exhausted and into foul trouble guarding Buddy. Mason told Coach at half time he would take him. Buddy already had 26 at the half. Mason in my opinion couldn't have done any more than what he did to stop Buddy. Playing with Four Fouls throughout the OT's, Buddy still made shots with Mason right in his face and grill. Buddy said himself that he was trying to get Frank to get his fifth foul because he was tired of having him in his face. Then Self said, "If Frank had not played like he did, Buddy would have scored 60." The steal on the out of bounds and Frank's ability to dribble to freedom before the foul was breath taking. Of all of these players, Frank was the one left with fuel in the gas tank. Everyone who played did great. Great to see Diallo in the game early and finally passing out of a double team. He will be playing more in conference. Svi's three was beautiful and Jamari was spectacular. I was glad that Self also put him in on defense for the last play. It really is tough to sleep with an 11:30 p.m. adrenaline rush.
@Bwag So to sum up what your saying in all of your post is that some of our players are good, but we have a poor coach that makes bad decisions in every game. Didn't you enjoy even part of this game as a Jayhawk? Is celebration and happiness not in your make up? When we lose a game this year, then you can eloquently wax your superior doom and gloom view and say "See how stupid Bill Self is." If and when we finally do win a NC, then we will be unbelievably lucky, or Self started listening to you. When a happy moment comes in your life, enjoy it.
@RockChalkinTexas She's a Coach. At least she doesn't wear a tie. She's starting to look like a muscular version of Amy Schumer, especially in the above picture.
They should bring back the Patti Page Bra.
Great starting five. Thin on the bench. We played more people, we get to sleep in our own beds 300 feet away from the locker room. OU played a nail-biter. Travel is easy from Norman unless they take a bus. Last time 1 played 2 was 1990 against Mizzou. Frank or Devonte will always have to be on the court against Buddy. C-5 vs. Spangler. We're not in Korea anymore.
