When Buddy went crazy two years ago, KU fans gave him a standing ovation. We did the same for Kevin Durant after this game. By the way, we won both games. Mason steal of Buddy on an out of bounds play was the big play against OU and the final block by Julian Wright against UT.

Dec 26, 2017 06:04 AM #41

@AsadZ Should be a pregame party at Scholz Beer Garden that happens every year.

Dec 26, 2017 01:17 PM #42

@wrwlumpy Thank You. I hope to meet up

Dec 26, 2017 03:02 PM #43

@wrwlumpy Man those bring back some days. - -Remembering that pair of Robinson & Chalmers - - pretty good little guards. - -Then Julian Wright - wonder what happened to him. Anyone know? - - Texas had some talented players - -Augustine - Durant some classic games. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Dec 26, 2017 03:16 PM #44

Can't wait to see this game. Is Doke ready for this one? If he can stay out of foul trouble, I think he will have a huge game!

Dec 26, 2017 03:23 PM #45

Given how college games are officiated, either Azuibuke or Bamba ends up in early foul trouble. That will decide how the first half goes, and which team is working its way out of a deficit at the break.

KU has the advantage since Texas is without Jones, but the Horns are getting better PG play as Coleman continues to progress, so they could be a real threat here. Still, KU by 6.

Dec 26, 2017 03:30 PM #46

Hmmm, had a friend ask me yesterday, brought up a scenario , ask me and possible point, now wonder. - -He says what happens if Billy went home over the Christmas break, gets in contact with Coach asks if they had heard anything at all - -Coach says no Billy - -no we haven't. - -Billy says then I'm done sit the whole 1st semester not getting to play , just decides to hire an agent and concentrate of preparing for the NBA instead of wasting time and getting nowhere with the NCAA. - -Wonder if he is back with the team? - - Wonder if De Sousa made it? - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Dec 26, 2017 03:43 PM #47

@jayballer54

The counterpoint to that is that right now, Preston can work out with the team, meaning he's at least getting to practice against good competition.

The only reason it would make sense to leave KU is if he went to the G-League for the rest of the season, then prepped for the draft. It wouldn't make sense to leave right now, with six months until the draft when he can stay at KU and practice unless he has somewhere else to go that gives him the chance to practice against quality players like Doke, the Lawson's, etc. and play with good guards as well.

The G-League has that. Most other places don't by this time since even the shorter season foreign leagues have started by now, meaning the free agent talent pool is pretty shallow at this point - mostly guys working back from injury. That's not the best talent to work against.

If Billy isn't going to the G-League, he might as well stay at KU.

Dec 26, 2017 04:00 PM #48

@justanotherfan Ya, very true, good points. - -I really hadn't even thought about it actually until my buddy brought this up yesterday.

I for one , and know countless others just wish this would come to a conclusion hell even one way or another at this point. - Really no strong idea personally myself about if he came back or not - -probably so , but then again you don't wanna say never say never either in this crazy world. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@jayballer54

I don't think anyone would care really if he left

Dec 26, 2017 05:12 PM #50

@justanotherfan I have been wondering about the Doke / Bamba matchup and I don't know what to think. Will Doke's strength even matter with Bamaba's length and quickness? I honestly don't know who has the advantage but I'm thinking Bamba.

Dec 26, 2017 05:24 PM #51

I personally hope De Sousa is available for Friday’s game just in case we get in to foul trouble. No knock to Clay Young or Solinski but having another legit big to go if Mitch and Doke both pick up fouls would be nice. Mitch will foul, it’s a given his blocks are nice but once people get the hint that he jumps at every shot fake, he’ll be in foul trouble. Doke IMO hasn’t got a ton of calls this year, he’s so gruthy that if was smaller he’d half twice the ft attempts but probably would’ve missed more than half anyway lol. I hope the refs let the boys play a little down in the paint.

Dec 26, 2017 05:39 PM #53

@kjayhawks

Even if he's cleared to play he will have had 3 practices. Self would play his walk ons before him at that point in my opinion. It's going to take weeks wouldn't you think for him to learn the offense and defensive responsibilities

I think we are going to regret ever signing him when we reflect on the season

Dec 26, 2017 05:41 PM #55

@BeddieKU23 of coarse I wouldn’t plan on him playing but if your choices at the 5 spot are 6’4 Young or a 6’7 football player over the 6’9 4 star recruit who would you play? I doubt his cleared by the NCAA that quickly and hope we don’t need him but you never know.

Dec 26, 2017 05:45 PM #56

@kjayhawks

I agree I would play him and see what he can do. We just know our coach is huge on trusting his guys before playing them. In this case he knows nothing of how KU does anything and has not earned anything. I think everyone involved knows he can help us but it's about using him when he's ready.

Dec 26, 2017 05:47 PM #57

@BeddieKU23 Yep, I wouldnt bet on him playing for a week or two, maybe longer but if the other guys are in foul trouble it’s better in the long haul for him to play over them.

Dec 26, 2017 05:51 PM #58

@kjayhawks

See I agree that it would be best for the silvio if he was good enough to play right away. But what's best for the team? And what's best for the guys that have been battling together for the first 2 months of the season. When silvio is what's best for the team as well as himself that's when I think we begin to see what his role could be here this year

Dec 26, 2017 06:25 PM #59

How in the world can Self justify playing DeSousa when he refused to play Diallo? DeSousa in three days (or in three weeks) can't be up to speed on what we do, compared to Diallo. Or maybe, perhaps, possibly, the chatter about Diallo was baloney. Or maybe DeSousa is a genius and we didn't know it.

Or, maybe, when you don't have an undertalented security blanket your hand is forced.

Dec 26, 2017 06:36 PM #60

@HighEliteMajor Or maybe that says something about Diallo...

Diallo also was on a team with Perry, Landen, Jamari, Mickelson and Bragg so depth wasn't near the issue it is currently.

Or, maybe. Just maybe. Bill might be conceding the Big XII in an effort for March. I doubt that. But, Bill needs another Championship and he might think that this team has what it takes outside of post play. So, he might be willing to lose 3 or 4 early in Conference play if he believes it means we can really hit our stride come the time the Tournament starts.

There are a lot of differences between the Diallo and De Sousa situation. And a lot more reasons to play De Sousa now. I'm hoping he was prepped well at IMG. He looks physically able to play the game at the P5 level. If that is true, it will just take a month before he can really be a contributor. Especially because I'm sure Bill has a plan in place to bring him along quicker than the average freshman.

De Sousa alone doesn't really raise this teams ceiling all that much, IMO. But, De Sousa makes the Billy decision that much bigger because he allows us to play big. The Billy and De Sousa combo is huge.

Well see this is what I like about this room we can give our honest opinion, give our opinions Just so happens on this one we don't agree but that's ok. - -I see where you posted above that Coach would play his walk ons before De-Sousa . - I have just got to say I just think your totally wrong on that.

Like I stated somewhere back 3 practices whatever, Coach would do Silvio just like the football walk on if nothing else. - Coach ask our walk on the 1st game he played in - -are you ready for this? - -He replied I don't know any of it. - -Which Silvio wouldn't either BUT like the Coach told him - -that's ok - -just sit a high ball screen and roll to the basket.

De Sousa can do just the same , until he can start picking up the offense. - -Some people seem to feel we need Silvio to produce some un Godly offensive numbers. Now I am not saying you think that but there are those that do To the contrary, that's not a must from the get go with De Sousa. He is only going to basically get spot minutes for awhile anyways, giving Dok relief when foul trouble and such. He can like Coach said sit the high ball screen and roll to the basket score some - -get some garbage 2nd chance rebounds - -put backs, we have enough scoring where it is not a must for him to score huge. At least not right off the bat.

The bigger thing we need for him is on the defensive end Rebounding giving fouls and rebounding on the offensive end - he would be fine for a bit. Again it's ok to disagree right? - -Everybody has their own opinion and this just happens to be mine that's all - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Dec 26, 2017 07:23 PM #62

@Kcmatt7 The answer is of course the depth issue. Self did not have to play Diallo. So he took the easier path. Playing the comfortable sweater, the one that keeps you warm, but the one you know will end in an uncomfortable rash before the end of the day.

Dec 26, 2017 07:30 PM #63

@jayballer54

If Silvio can play Friday Self will play his walk-ons. He played the football player at the end of a blowout win, not exactly throwing him out there in the fire. Now Sosinski has had more time to learn what is required of him if need be. He'll play the guys that know what they are doing. That's not Silvio yet. We are in Big-12 play, Bill Self's baby. On the road defending our streak, yeah Self isn't about to throw guys out there for the sake of it.

In due time though. I'm hoping by February he's either our 2nd big or 3rd big in the rotation

Again this why like I said it's good to have a forum to voice opinions. - -IF I were a betting man - I would have to place that wager with you that De-Sousa would see action in a conference game before walk on's - but I spend my money more wisely. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@whipperboy73

He asked a walk on in a blowout if he could play a few minutes. Big difference in asking him to play in a big 12 game that most likely wont be a blowout don't you think. Funny stuff as always

Dec 26, 2017 09:13 PM #71

@HighEliteMajor The team that Diallo played on had considerably more depth at the post position. We have 2 post players in Mitch and Doke. They will both play over him obviously but if they both are in foul trouble it would make more sense to play De Sousa whom maybe able to help us later in the year and in all honesty watching De Sousa I’d be shocked if he isn’t getting most of Mitch’s minutes bye seasons end. He’s bigger, stronger, more athletic and most likely a better rebounder walking in the gym today. It will depend on how long he takes to buy in and get used to the speed of the college game.

Dec 26, 2017 09:21 PM #72

Diallo had ZERO clue where to be on the floor on the offensive end, and it screwed up the entire team. Hence, the players voted to start Landon instead. Hopefully De Sousa can learn how to set a screen and at least run a couple in-bound plays.

UMM, how much different is there in rebounding in a game with 20 minutes left - - 5 minutes left - -1 minute left- - you know how to rebound -- you know how to rebound. - how much difference is there to set a high screen and roll with twenty minutes left - or one minute left - -yes very funny stuff as always indeed lmao. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@whipperboy73 Heh, I'm fine. I just think it's way too hard to extrapolate anything based on the time Sosinski got against Sisters of the Poor U. He played 4 minutes. His PER is 57
(HOWLING as @jaybate-1-0 would say), his Ortg is 207 and his net BPM is 9.4. He might have a nose for the ball, he might not, we will see if he ever plays against real competition in real minutes.

Keep in mind that if he stays he still has to attend classes and maintain good grades. In the G League is all basketball all the time.

Dec 27, 2017 03:34 PM #81

@JayHawkFanToo

This is definitely true.

Some guys are surprised by that element of pro basketball. It is all basketball all the time because basketball is your job. You have to get up and go lift. You have to eat right. You have to work on different elements of your game with a mind towards improvement.

You can't just go in the gym and shoot. You have to go in the game and work at game speed. You have to work on your jab step 17 footer. You have to work on your step back 17 footer. You have to work on your one dribble to the left 17 footer. You have to work on your one dribble to the right 17 footer. You have to work on your pick and pop 17 footer. Then you have to do all of that again at 15. Then again at 19.

Then you have to work in the post. You have to finish while people hit you with pool noddles and push you with boxing pads.

You have to condition.

You have to stretch.

You have to watch film to understand the nuances of offensive and defensive sets that are three or four times more complex than anything you have seen to this point in your basketball life.

It's just like a job. You clock in at 2 and clock out after the game at 10. On off days you might clock in at 10, and clock out at 5.

@wrwlumpy Man O Man, this weekend will really kick off the W/L column for Big 12 Hoops! This TCU vs Oklahoma contest could loom huge for the league's final outcome. Trae Young and Co. are gonna face a real challenge, right off the first pitch. If Jayhawks can come away from Austin with a win, KU will be one game up on TCU or Oklahoma before midnight Saturday.

Dec 29, 2017 06:01 AM #91

@wrwlumpy Strike that midnight talk. Before suppertime Saturday!

@REHawk

The winner of the OU-TCU game will have earned a big win and validation, no question about it

I know a lot of people here will take OU in this game, and that's a pretty solid pick for sure. I myself I dunno , I have just got this feeling for some reason TCU shows it'self and pulls this game out and gets the win.

Maybe it is just me wishful thinking, but then again, this is a chance for TCU to really prove themselves this season , goon be a huge game, going to be interesting to see if the TCU fans will show and support their team that will mean a lot for them too. - -Their fans have to get out and support TCU and Jamie. Gonna be some really good games let's do this. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@RockChalkinTexas I will try to make it, came into town yesterday evening

Dec 29, 2017 03:34 PM #95

@wrwlumpy

It is not outside the realm of possibility for four of the best five teams in the league (Baylor, KU, OU, West Virginia) to all take road losses to start the conference slate.

As has been said, wins on the road count for double, so whoever can grab a road win this weekend will be sitting very pretty.

Dec 29, 2017 04:58 PM #96

@justanotherfan

Don’t forget Texas Tech., they Are probably the conference sleeper and will surprise.

I have KU, WVU an OU as the top 3 teams in the likely but not necessarily final order. Next I have Baylor, TCU and Tech fighting for a top hal finish and finally Texas, KSU, OSU and ISU at the bottom. We have a very small sample on the teams so far since games against weak teams don’t tell us much. We will have a better idea after this weekend.

Dec 29, 2017 05:21 PM #97

Tonight is game night, but let's face it. We are really focused on SDeSousa. We need to give him a nickname. I was thinking Sous, as a play on Zeus? Okay, a little corny, but the more I watch this kid, the more I like him. He reminds me of Shady. He plays with poise and is explosive. He needs some Hudyizing, and I believe he can be every bit as good, if maybe not better than Shady. The team is going to be nasty next year. We AIN'T seen nuttin' yet.

Dec 29, 2017 07:18 PM #102

@wrwlumpy

Too bad that whoever did the Photoshop job did not place a Jayhawk in her cheek to replace the Texas logo.

Dec 29, 2017 07:24 PM #103

@JayHawkFanToo

I agree. I have Tech as the either the third or fourth best team in the conference, behind KU and WVU, even with OU and ahead of Baylor. They are at home, so I figure they beat Baylor, but if the home teams all hold, most of the top half of the conference will be 0-1.

Any way you slice it, it's likely that at least a couple of the top half starts out 0-1 (either Baylor or Tech has to lose, and I can't imagine OU, WVU and KU all win on the road). That's the fun of the round robin. You can't dodge anybody.

Dec 29, 2017 07:51 PM #104

Texas has the # 2 defense according to Kenpom. Wonder how much of that is Bamba. Have to get him into foul trouble early and change the tempo

Dec 29, 2017 08:20 PM #105

@BeddieKU23

In the conference, Texas is second in scoring defense allowing only 60.4 ppg but it is also last in scoring offense with only 72.4 ppg. If you look at the overall conference stats, ↗ Texas is at or near the bottom in all the good stats and at or near the top the top in all the poor stats. The only good stat where they lead is blocked shots with 6.3 bpg; KU is 5th with 4.8bpg. Bamba leads the conference in blocked shots with 4.3 bpg.

Dec 29, 2017 09:53 PM #106

@JayHawkFanToo

Yeah this is a typical slog team from shaka. We have to bring one of our best offensive games to prevail in this one. I can see bamba being a big factor

A shame KU got involved in his recruitment too late.

Dec 29, 2017 10:09 PM #109

Gotta win this game in Austin Folks. Gotta win the first two contests. Then we might have a bit of league breathing room. Unless we get a power forward onto the floor to do some damage in that third game at TCU I would not wager a nickel on the outcome.

Dec 29, 2017 10:24 PM #110

@BeddieKU23

Bamba is a potentially elite defensive player. He's incredibly raw offensively, but from a defensive perspective, he could quite possibly be the best defensive player in the country - he'd be the overall #1 pick in the NBA draft next June if he were anywhere near that good offensively.

Dec 29, 2017 10:33 PM #111

@justanotherfan

Yup his ridiculous wingspan is just unheard of. I think he makes life really hard for the guards. We haven't shown to be a team smart enough to put our body into bigs and make them foul us

Coaching?

Dec 29, 2017 11:18 PM #117

@HawkChamp

I think it's more of not having the guys with the mindset. Vick should be that guy, malik should be that guy, Marcus and Sam as well. Some of its the offense we run that's more east west then north south. We spend a ton of time passing the ball on the perimeter for some reason

Dec 29, 2017 11:28 PM #118

@BeddieKU23 they've been doing a better job of attacking the last couple games, especially Svi. They just need some coaching on how to not get swatted all the time, imo.

Dec 29, 2017 11:37 PM #119

@HighEliteMajor true story. Any of those shirts would look great on the floor.

Dec 29, 2017 11:54 PM #120

I think it would be smart to give Silvio a couple of minutes in the Texas game. Just to give him a taste of the speed of a real Big 12 game. It will help expose to Silvio just how much improvement he needs to make.

Stick him in sometime in the first half.... far ahead of crunch time.

We need Silvio to get up to speed as quickly as possible. Putting him in for 2 minutes in the first half won't blow a game for us. But it will help push him along faster. Teach him a couple of sets and a few plays, and then Devonte just keep to the script. It's 2 friggin' minutes!

Dec 30, 2017 03:07 AM #132

Drew is a fair recruiter, but his Xs and Os have always been lacking. I think he would make a great assistant some where that has an opening. Scotty is a little odd. I have no ill will, but he's a strange dude. I'm sure if he knew me, he'd think me odd too. hehe

Dec 30, 2017 03:13 AM #135

The thing is Baylor's teams could have been a lot better with the talent and length that they've had, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully the next coach doesn't ignore that side of the ball.

Dec 30, 2017 03:14 AM #136

Svi heating up.

That Bamba dunk was ridiculous. Not sure there are ten other people that catch that lob in that position.

Dec 30, 2017 04:42 AM #147

@KUSTEVE
Yea, the refs really let em play and bang some bodies around tonight without trying to take over the game.

And it was nice to hear Bilas gush over us, so glad Walton was doing the ucla game after and not ours.

The only thing I wish is that we had just one more stud to play with DG, Svi, Doke and Vic. Two more studs (Preston and Sousa for example) and we wouldn't lose a game. Definitely get some solid minutes from others (and yes I'm a Lightfoot fan), but... dang, just one more real threat and it sure would make things a heckuva lot easier.

And lastly, as it's been said before, some coaches just have other coaches number. Bill completely owns Smart. That VCU loss in the Elite 8 a few years ago must have really pissed bill off as he hasn't lost to him since! Oh and loved the technical on the not Smart one too!

Dec 30, 2017 04:47 AM #148

@HighEliteMajor Considering your oft-expressed opinions of refs in general, and of Bilas, did you have a moment of cognitive dissonance when Bilas bashed Higgins? Which dislike takes precedence here?

Dec 30, 2017 04:59 AM #149

@mayjay Very nice. So, I do like Bilas as an announcer. Don't agree with his anti-NCAA stuff, and really don't like the general anti-CBB diatribes (wanting to always change the game/NBA preference). But even if I didn't like him as announcer, I would still side heavily -- very heavily -- with Bilas. Higgins let Shaka talk a few times. But Bilas was exactly right. Refs should never pursue a coach that walks away. Refs should get suspended for that. But as long as the powers that be permit refs to be too large a part of the game, we get that. I will never understand it.

Dec 30, 2017 05:07 AM #150

Dec 30, 2017 05:44 AM #153

Didn't realize Higgins was reffing tonight. That surprises me considering how much KU got away with on defense tonight. It's usually the other way around with him, but I'm not surprised though that he made himself the center of attention since that's his typical MO for games.

Dec 30, 2017 05:46 AM #154

@HighEliteMajor "Don't agree with his anti-NCAA stuff"

Can you elaborate on that?

Dec 30, 2017 05:56 AM #155

SHAKA SMART IS A LIL' BEEOTCH. He was in the damn bonus when he threw his little bitch fit about fouls and to make him look more like a stupid wuss, he drew a technical for his idiotic tantrum. Jay Bilas was wrong about John Higgins. Higgins actually gave Shaka Stupid, a not so Smart "T". What the hell more did he want? He's damn lucky Higgins didn't T him a second. Those stupid STEER Fans are the most obnoxious people I know.

Dec 30, 2017 05:56 AM #156

@JayHawkFanToo Yes he had 8 blocks, 3 of which were goal tends. That’s the plus and minus of being able to rewind live TV in this day and age. The one they missed on Svi’s layup was ridiculous and I thought it could’ve been a huge play if they’d of hit the 3 on the other end with us up 6 at that point.

Dec 30, 2017 06:01 AM #157

@kjayhawks Yes, GOAL TENDING. They didn't call it once. Why didn't the Beeotch Steer pitch a bitch session about that little gem. They mauled us ALL damn night.

Dec 30, 2017 06:04 AM #158

@kjayhawks

I agree. The one on Svi was just bad but Bilas, who sounded like a high school girl with a crush on Bamba, would not say a thing. Surprised Bills was doing a Big 12 game.

Just got home = 12:30 AM! Great win. Told HCBS it was great that they went to the zone and he said it was the "guys" who made it work to get us back to up 10. I'll chime in tomorrow when I've gotten to watch the replay and post some pictures. I was in a row of ALL KU FANS and it was so much fun. Haven't read anything here but damn the refs missed at least 3 goal tends. And the T on Smartass was glorious. The fans started booing and I told the ones around me that the UT fans are almost as bad as ISU. Dog tired but we got the W.

@HighEliteMajor I like Bilas too, but like all commentators he gets into repeating clever phrases that should have only been said once not repeated ad nauseam (like a "funny once but not twice" for anyone who ever read The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.) Last night it was the bad-shot-as-turnover comment. Fran does it more than anyone--Hey look, everyone! I was really clever!

I actually wondered why no one ever figured out, or at least announced, what caused the problem leading to the T. It looked to me like a timeout was granted to Tex, but Shaka looked mystified as if he never called it. If so, Higgins might have heard someone from the bench area and thought it was Shaka. And if that happened, he was even more at fault.

Dec 30, 2017 05:45 PM #166

The block on Svi could only have been not goaltending if the trajectory of the shot would have missed the basket by at least two feet!

@Fightsongwriter I lived in DFW for 12 yrs and for the most part, loved living there. It's a great state and Austin is a great city too, but those fans are absolute idiots. I've never seen such ignorant and obnoxious fans, next to the OU football faithless.

You watch, if OU loses to Georgia, not one OU fan will meet them at Will Rogers Airport. I work with Pokes and Thieves, yes, Sooners are a bunch of land thieves. Few people understand the true history of the Land Run. This is why they added Boomer, this way they don't seem like a bunch of thieves. I bet most of the land in Oklahoma is owned by a bunch of people who cheated, and it cracks me up to think how much pride they have in stealing land.

I didn't know Bamba could make the 3. He's years away from being a finished product but some NBA team could be sitting on a future all-star if he develops the skill on the offensive side

Dec 30, 2017 07:07 PM #171

@mayjay Now you may have point there if you want to talk about social issues and crime, haha. However, you would think the folks, planners, or founders of Oklahoma University would've thought twice about the "Sooners." I would've went with "Boomers." At least they were real honest people that came by their land according the rules of the Land Run.

I'd be glad to discuss Oklahoma history with you. I'm a transplant from Kansas to Oklahoma, but when you live and work with them, and you see the word "SOONERS" everywhere you go, I can't stop but think of a bunch of land thieves, sorry if that struck a chord, or maybe you have Oklahoma ties. At least my comment is factual. Maybe after the OU/KU football game, I got my hackles raised a bit.

@truehawk93 I wasn't disagreeing at all. I was just trying to make an ironic comment about those thieves within the larger context of centuries of invasion and occupation around the entire world! I have little exposure to Oklahomans in general, except in reading about the Dust Bowl and how short-sighted political, agricultural, and economic decision-making helped them destroy their environment and created the "Okie" exodus.

Bamba would be a tough guy to officiate. He is so tall and long, he gets to balls that are higher than what most can get to. Its tough to really tell if he is getting them at their peak, or just as they come down.

It would be a nightmare at real speed, considering that even in slow motion, it's hard to tell. I think one of the blocks may have been a goal tend, but the others looked clean to me.
