Yeah this is a very solid walk-on group. Teahan is a legit D2 player, not sure about Luinstra as I never saw him play but he seems to be a good kid and Elliott is a walk-on that visited the likes of UK/AZ for a rea$on.

Sep 11, 2018 09:33 PM #56

OK , so I just got a question/comment. kinda of KU related but also just trying to bring out a point and didn't know where else to put/ask this.

So as I'm sure most anybody/everybody knows how the Kentucky People like to bragg on Coach C - almost a GOD gets all this talent right?
We also know or at least most do about how they bag on Coach Self talking about all our early exits from the tourney talking about as they say quote " Old Rug head as they like to call him - how he caves and we pretend to be blue bloods.

So here is my question/statement . - Read this from ESPN today question is: - -How many NCAA Titles has Calipari won since he has been at Kentucky? According to ESPN - -ONE as they talk about best case worst case scenario's for this year for each top 25 team - So at the present he has ONE since being at Kentucky. - - -HMMMMM.

Question how many has Coach Self have since being at KU ? - -Answer as we know - - - ONE. - -HMMMM

Question - how many SEC conference Championships ha Coach Cal won since being at Kentucky? - -will be going for his 5th this season.
How many BIG 12 championships has Coach Self won since he has been at KU ? - will be going for his 15th straight - NCAA record - - -HMMMM

So now someone please explain to me How Coach Cal is suppose to be so much more superior of a Coach again over Coach Self. - How many years have we beat Kentucky in a row? - - Answer 3 - All with Coach Self. - -HMMMMM If Cal is that much of a superior Coach then someone tell me Why Cal with all the 5 star talent - -pretty much the pick of the litter - pretty much the # 1 recruiting class year after year - -after year 5 star players - -WHY is it Cal only has ONE National title same as Coach Self at KU - -please explain to me how he is a Superior Coach? - They brag about he gets his kids to the NBA. Really? - -Is that because of his coaching ability ? - -OR is it just a matter of the player being that talented all those 5 star players already coming how much does Calipari - REALLY develop these players? - -Don't you think if we had those SAME 5 star players that Coach Self would be having the same kind of numbers getting these guys to the NBA ? - Just Curious - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@wissox They still publish those?

Sep 24, 2018 05:10 PM #93

@KUSTEVE They do! I've bought one for every season back to the mid 80's. Somehow I lost my mid 80's to late 80's, but have every issue going back to since then. I pull them out every once in a while and like looking at the names of the HS stars. They name 20 top players and then long lists of honorable mention types. The number of top 20 types who even make themselves into a decent college player is pretty slim. Fascinating stuff.

By the way I have the same number of S & S's baseball magazines as well. They're still the best, although I don't like the regional covers which means I don't have any with KU on the cover except in the early days.

No offense to women, but watching them play basketball on a 10 foot goal is not entertaining. They need to lower it do 9, or maybe even 8.5 feet. At that point, I actually think the game could be a lot more fun.

Sep 27, 2018 01:16 PM #115

@Kcmatt7 They should make the women's court smaller, too. 8 foot baskets at 60 feet would make the game far more interesting, imo.

Kansas hosts long list of high-level recruits

The biggest weekend across the country takes place in Lawrence. Late Night at the Phog is generally the focal point of Kansas' recruiting calendar in the fall, and this year is no exception. Bill Self is welcoming a slew of top targets, starting with No. 1 senior James Wiseman.

Wiseman's recruitment is viewed as a Memphis vs. Kentucky battle, but he and his family have insisted all along it's not a two-team race and other schools are in the mix. Kansas is one of them, and Self will get his shot this weekend. Five-star guard Cassius Stanley (No. 25) cut his list to three schools last week, leaving UCLA, Kansas and Oregon vying for his services. USC was left off the list, to the surprise of some. There's no clear leader of the three remaining schools, but UCLA quietly has some momentum.

Another key visitor and longtime target is in-state center Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (No. 38). Robinson-Earl grew up less than an hour from campus and his father played at Kansas for Roy Williams. He is now at IMG Academy (Florida) for his senior season, but Kansas is still in solid position. His recruitment is shaping up as a Kansas-North Carolina battle, and he visited Chapel Hill last weekend.

While those three are the ones to watch in Lawrence this weekend, there's much more. Elite junior R.J. Hampton (No. 7 in 2020) will take his official visit after going to Memphis two weeks ago, and recent commit Christian Braun is also expected on campus. ESPN 100 forward Chandler Lawson (No. 58) and his younger brother, five-star sophomore Johnathan Lawson (No. 21 in 2021), will be at Late Night (their older brothers, Dedric and K.J. will suit up for the Jayhawks this season), and 2019 forward Anthony Walker and five-star junior N'Faly Dante (No. 13) are also taking visits. Kansas football coach David Beaty said earlier this week that rapper 2 Chainz is set to perform.

James Wiseman prediction: Memphis
Confidence level: 55 percent
Others in the mix: Kentucky, Kansas, Vanderbilt, Florida State

Cassius Stanley prediction: UCLA
Confidence level: 40 percent
Others in the mix: Kansas, Oregon

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl prediction: Kansas
Confidence level: 60 percent
Others in the mix: North Carolina, Arizona, Notre Dame, Villanova

Sep 29, 2018 02:17 AM #146

If the students and recruits like it, I'm good with the format!

Sep 29, 2018 02:18 AM #147

I'm happy Cox didn't stop at 9. I loved Selfs skit, alright,alright alright. I'm a fan😍

Sep 29, 2018 02:19 AM #148

Bill has slimmed down a lot. I figured that was the inspiration for the Matthew McConaughey Lincoln spoof bit.

Sep 29, 2018 02:19 AM #149

Good one!

Sep 29, 2018 02:20 AM #150

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to lose a few pounds if I expect people to keep mistaking me for Self. (happens about twice a year)

Sep 29, 2018 02:22 AM #151

@Crimsonorblue22 After watching it, I feel about 100...

Heard 2Chainz killed it, but we didn't get to see that, we got filler content.

Sep 29, 2018 02:24 AM #153

@BShark If it keeps going this long, they'll have to stop Late Night, so they can catch a flight to play Sparty...

Sep 29, 2018 02:24 AM #154

I see 2Chainz going that long as a positive. People were really into it.

Sep 29, 2018 02:28 AM #155

He was a bb player, might see some minutes

Sep 29, 2018 02:30 AM #158

@Crimsonorblue22 Grimes, Doke and Vick got the loudest ovations.

Ochai Agbaji.

Yeah he's good. Team is too deep this year for him to get many minutes but he should be a real factor as early as next season.

Sep 29, 2018 02:59 AM #165

I’m ticked my ESPN app quit during the intros, I was able to watch the rest. Man I hate the scrimmage, lol it’s the same as most years guys just running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I’m like Self sitting here critic it. Now we have to wait 27 days to play 😒

Sep 29, 2018 03:03 AM #166

Be hard to keep everybody happy. That's what worries me.

Sep 29, 2018 04:29 AM #167

We made it out healthy. Great event all around.

There's not alot to be gleaned from the short scrimmage. I thought Vick, KJ, and Silvio looked the best. I thought Devon looked very impressive. No way do I see Charlie being a roadblock for him, as I have speculated before. I think Mitch got his 3 ball card pulled last night. Dedric forced several shots, but he put together a real nice shot near the end that hints how good he can be. Quentin had some nice moments, although he missed a bunny. I noticed he races to the basket on every missed shot, so he could be a real nice secondary rebounder. Talented team...sloppy, sloppy team. It's early...they'll get better.

Crimsonorblue22 said:

Yep. Can't play 12 guys. And unlike a lot of schools the 11th and 12th guys are 4* recruits.

Sep 29, 2018 01:03 PM #171

The scrimmage is always rough. Self never has his system installed because they never have practice ahead of time, until the last couple of years. It's also an event where you don't want any injuries to occur so even if Self had his system in place, I doubt there would be any defense played on this. It's just a chance for the players to show off different facets of their game for the crowd.

Sep 29, 2018 02:34 PM #172

Even the walk ons can shoot

Sep 29, 2018 02:57 PM #173

@Crimsonorblue22 I liked the fact that Vick calmly sank the first shot of the game...a 3 ball. Leadership...

Sep 29, 2018 03:07 PM #174

@Texas-Hawk-10 You’d think the returning players wouldn’t forget every set over the summer though. You are right it’s the same every year. Exception being that time JoJo messed around too much and actually got chewed out by Self for his Late Night performance. Gotta be a first.

Sep 29, 2018 03:10 PM #175

If Bill wanted them running sets that's what they'd be doing. It's just a show.

Sep 29, 2018 03:19 PM #176

@BShark It would be silly to try and run sets, I just don't like it because its bad basketball lol. I was surprised last night, usually there are more highlight reel lobs and dunks.

Sep 29, 2018 03:22 PM #177

@kjayhawks yes. I always figure the guys would build chemistry over the summer. Doesn’t always show in the late night setting though. I wouldn’t look for a high low, just some good two man action.

Sep 29, 2018 03:41 PM #178

@kjayhawks yeah, it's hard to watch, looking forward to the exhibition on Oct 25th.

@dylans there was a nice two man sequence with Grimes and Dedric passing back and forth that ended in a lay-up.

Sep 29, 2018 04:51 PM #179

The two teams shot a combined 12/29 (about 41.4%) from 3.

KJ shot 3/4 from 3.

I underestimated Dedric's ability to rebound. He may be the best rebounder on the team actually.

Grimes and Dedric both had 3 assists. Dedric put the ball on the floor and had a really nice fadeaway jumpshot off of one foot. He's really good.

Grimes had a really nice bounce pass to Dedric on the baseline.

Mitch led the game with 19 minutes played. McCormack only played 9 minutes and didn't do much.

Agbaji and Elliot both looked decent.

And I'm not surprised that the red team won.

Sep 29, 2018 04:58 PM #180

@KirkIsMyHinrich Hard to take too much from this tbh. Both Lawsons are very good though. Lots of people sleeping on KJ.

Sep 29, 2018 05:00 PM #181

Best case scenario is KJ is the real deal and starts over Vick. Vick coming off the bench would really let you know just how deep we are.

Sep 29, 2018 05:00 PM #182

KJ led either team in points and only played 9 minutes!

But ya, this game didn't mean anything.

Yeah I think super 6th man is more likely, where he gets just about starter type minutes. When it looked like Doke could leave I thought a starting line-up with the Lawsons at the 4-5 sounded very appealing.

Sep 29, 2018 05:10 PM #184

Passive/Inconsistent Vick = KJ in starting lineup

Good Vick = Vick in starting lineup

I think Vick will start to begin the season. But if he has a season like his junior year, then he'll lose his starting spot to KJ probably. It's nice to have depth this season.

Sep 30, 2018 02:48 PM #185

@Kcmatt7 Tait thinks Marcus will start over KJ and Vick. I don't see that. I think Vick has to get heavy minutes for his shooting, but I can't help but be impressed with the way KJ plays. Nice stroke, hits the boards, plays very smart.

Went back and watched, and Agbaji looks really good. And the more I see KJ, the more I'm thinking we have to get this guy as many minutes as possible. That steal where he jumped the passing lane, and took it home was spectacular. He has a really nice jump shot, and he shoots it quick, but with real good form. 9 minutes....11 points... 3 threes...4 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Put him on the floor with Dedric, Grimes, and Dotson, and you've got 4 semi- point guards on the floor ( check out the Dedric to Grimes to Dedric sequence at 2:26. OMG. GREAT TEAMWORK.) Great passers ....great drivers ...unselfish players looking for their teammates all the time. Teams are simply not going to be able to guard us man to man.
