I like KenPom but I think basketball is the hardest sport to rank. KenPom gave Stephen F Austin a .2 chance to beat Dook. I picked a bracket of off KenPom and it was the worst I’ve ever filled outta lol. I think I prefer old school RPI at this point.

@BShark 100 percent! I saw the after game press conference. "We deserved to lose the game." No dude, you were totally outplayed, and SF Austin deserved to win.

Updated PER's after Maui. The first is PER's after the BYU game and the 2nd is after Dayton. Doke, Dotson, & Garrett were the big movers after huge games. Marcus has improved significantly through 7 games from his career average. This team is better if he's better.

I really like the projected bracket today (not going to happen) KU 1 seed with 2 Maryland, 3 North Carolina, 4 Florida State. Very doable, won’t happen.

We profile out extremely similar to TTU last year. We are also back at a +15 scoring margin. The last team KU team to be over that was 2010-11. 16 and 13 were at about +14.

Feb 09, 2020 03:57 PM #13

@BShark

The offense isnt pretty but this team is excellent, elite defensively and has two guys nobody can stop when they play to their high level

Feb 09, 2020 04:56 PM #16

@BeddieKU23 I think it’s time to start talking about Baylor as a dominant team. The last time they lost was a long time ago. They beat us by double digits at home.

Feb 09, 2020 06:00 PM #17

@benshawks08 don't be a party pooper!🤣 thinking positive here! Self seems to have a handle on dokes mood swings! Dot seems healthier. BD is great off the bench. Marcus had his only off game, for sure🤩🔥. Och, Braun and moss will contribute defensively and hit some 3's. Tristan got some boards yesterday. Last game we started off poorly w/2 bigs, caught up w/4-1, then dot went down. Rest is history. Baylor is squeaking by teams we are beating. Gotta check vital! Keep them off the boards, play great D! We got this🙏💙❤️

Feb 09, 2020 06:44 PM #18

@benshawks08 Baylor is proving themselves to be one of the best teams for sure. But man I’ve watched them not only play us but a couple other teams and man they have gotten pretty lucky at times. Hitting garbage shots at the most opportune time. I still don’t trust Scott Drew, he has had a lions share of talented teams down there. But has never won the conference title and only finished tied for second once. He has 3 sweet 16s and a single elite 8 in the NCAA tournament. His teams have just not got it done late in the season.

partly because ALL of College Basketball is just down this year. - Sure we have a pretty good team just saying on top of us being good everyone is down.

Coach K actually made a pretty good point the other day before the game. - He said that Basketball is down partly because of all the kids declaring for the draft. - -I think they showed a stat like 68 underclass men declared for the draft - - is hat right ? - whatever the number just a ridicilious number - and out of that number how many get drafted ? or find a spot ? - takes away from the overall talent in College. - -I've sure noticed the difference this year , and it's been stated GOD knows how many times that there is just no Dominant team this year. - -Hell someone has to win it , might as well be us right ? - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Feb 09, 2020 10:05 PM #23

Coach K is right, but if college basketball can't make itself more appealing than the G League and various international leagues this is only going to get worse. Look at Dotson for instance, good college player but he is going to go pro early despite not really having a shot at the NBA right now.

I really wouldn't say they got lucky when they played us, they pretty well controlled that game form opening tip - -they have really really good guards.

Oklahoma St played them well both times - -can't figure that out Okie St. - -They're game plan last night was to flat out make vital and Gilisipie beat them and not the guards - -worked pretty well at times last night - -actually quite a bit of the time

Just falls in line with a couple of things that I just don't get with this team , Okie State plays both games really well against Baylor - they was pretty much in Control with us. The West Virginia beats us up on the Boards, well they do that to a lot of people BUT Oklahoma pretty well hung with them hell may of eve out rebounded them - - fricken OKLAHOMA I just don't get that, how the hell can they do that lol? - -hell Mannick got 9 rebounds himself against them -that should not happen wit West Virginia , Doo LittleI think had 12 rebounds , weird game of Basketball

@jayballer73 go back and rewatch the game, got layups off of loose balls rolling right to them and a couple of off balanced 3s late in the clock. They did control most of it but those lucky shots played a big hand in it.

Feb 09, 2020 11:28 PM #30

This is a down year in college basketball. Watched the Duke/UNC game yesterday and it was like watching a high school game.

I still think our hype over how great our defense is is largely overhype. We still leave trey shots wide open, miss assignments, make unnecessary switches, sometimes go under ball screens, fail to play to scouting reports and hedge properly, fail to seal off the boards, and we still haven't learned how to play a hyper Nova-style swarming defense... am I missing something?

But we do play good "fuzzy defense." We stay fairly close to the ball and Doke is in the paint. Doke seems to improve his defense almost every single game now! I can tell he has been studying Withey footage. Withey understood the path a basketball had to take to get to the basket, and that is all that counts because he would meet the ball somewhere in that path.

My optimism for March is largely focused on Doke's improving defense. Hey... it worked against us in 2012 to give Calipari his only crown with the unibrow!

We've already proven we can win without offense. How many teams heading to March Madness will know that?

Feb 10, 2020 12:13 AM #31

@drgnslayr

I think this defense gets in people's heads. They do play well together defensively which is what you want to see. Last years team didnt play for each other. Having 3 really solid guard defenders and a eraser at the rim in Doke has really made life difficult for teams. Hard to remember a Self team defending this way in at least 6-7 yrs

Well I understand , but it's ok - you can still give them credit - -it's going to be ok, they are # 1 for a reason, they have done something that the OTHER # 1 teams wasn't able to do this season and that is they have continued to win AFTER being ranked #1 whether they win at home or on the road, - -that's a mark of a good team. Just go out and win , doesn't matter if it is an Ugly win , a lucky win or a Rout - - a win is a win whether you win by 1 OR 21 still counts the same.

You said loose balls right? - -so that means there was no team control , means it's all about who is willing to go after the ball more - - who wants it more. Could they lose ? - -Sure they can , they are human , they are going to turn you over, they're guards a VERY GOOD - - VEERY GOOD that's what happens when good guards pressure, look at our guards - awesome on the defensive end. - Like 9 steals a game - -that's beyond good. you might be surprised at how much luck does play in a lot of games , not just Baylor. - we have had our share of luck throughout the years.

Them getting lucky is just like luck playing a part in the NCAA Championship games at times. Luck plays a part to an extent in almost any game - -we gonna be fine. - -Will we win at Baylor? - who knows? - I sure the hell don't , do I think we win ? I hope so but yet I'm not willing to bet the farm on it. -- ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

If they hold serve against KU and win the Big-12 then I'll agree. They have been very impressive this season so far and Jared Butler put on a clinic in Allen Fieldhouse. I have watched their last 10-12 games and a few things make me hesitant about calling them dominant if we are comparing them to past great teams in College BBall but they deserve their ranking and accolades. Going to be a heck of a showdown in Waco

Feb 10, 2020 04:22 PM #35

FYI.

Devon Dotson leads the Conference in scoring at 18 ppg. He's also 2nd in steals per game & 6th in assists per game.

Udoka Azubuike leads the Conference in Rebounding at 9.7 pg. He also leads the Conference in FG% & is 2nd in Blocks Per Game at 2.6. Stud.

Marcus Garrett is 5th in Assists per game but #1 in the league for being a complete bad-ass defender and team player. His assist to turnover ratio is tops in the Conference.

These hawks are good individually and as a team

Feb 10, 2020 05:18 PM #41

@BeddieKU23 So, how did this happen? Surely Self, after all these years, didn't wake up before the season and say " Oh, what the heck, let's play some defense this year".

Did the team just evolve? Did they say " Nobody can put the ball in the hoop so we may as well just play good defense"?

Either way, I personally love to see the good "D". Love to see the opponents scoring in the 40's and 50's.

We have a bunch of really good individual and team defenders: Dot is pesky, Marcus is Gary Payton 2.0, Ochai is solid, and Doke is the eraser behind everything. It's really amazing how big a difference a good rim protector makes in Self's system.

Feb 10, 2020 05:42 PM #44

@nuleafjhawk

I think this team has learned their identity is defense. It is how they are winning games, and players want to win.

Once they accept it as their identity they believe more in what Self has been teaching them all along... defense!

You can see how their energy picks up higher on defense than on offense. They are taking some pride in getting stops.

I remain hard on them because they still have so much they can improve on. If they can improve in the second half of the season like they did in the first half, we should go far in March.

Marcus has made a big impact on this team by leading by example. His energy is contagious. So glad he will be back next year, too!

Doke was 6 of 7 from the field, 7-8 from the line, with 16 rebounds. He made 19 of the 22 possible points he attempted and only potentially rebounded himself once.

We shot 28-64 (43.8%), but if you subtract his rebounds from our 64 shots attempted, we shot 28-48 (58.3%), and that includes 10-28 from 3, a healthy number of attempted 3s.

A lot of balance in both leagues. I think the B1G is more crowded in the middle, without a really strong team at the top, while the Big XII has two really strong teams, two really weak teams, and 6 in the middle that are very solid.

I don't think either league has really tested their top teams. Other than Baylor, KU hasn't really been tested by a top notch team in the conference. Same for Baylor (despite the loss to a middling TCU team).

Seems like since King was canned the team has found new life. Who woulda thought..

Mar 02, 2020 07:26 PM #74

@BeddieKU23 Yeah, that seemed to be a turning point. A strange one. He wasn't canned by the way, he quit on the team. I'd be feeling pretty crappy if i was him because every Badger fan now says the turnaround was because he left town. Incredibly, the Badgers, one game behind Maryland could win the BIG. We play Northwestern which got their 2nd league win last night when Nebraska made 8 of 30 FT's. Then we go to Indiana which will be tougher. Maryland goes to Rutgers and gets OSU at home. We have the tiebreaker over Maryland. Pretty amazing.

@justanotherfan You're right, Big12 has 8 different teams with shots at the dance. BIG has 8 ranked teams right now which are assumed to be locks, but Rutgers is on the good side of the bubble, and Indiana is as well. Barely above .500 Purdue has a pretty nice resume despite 14 losses overall.

Mar 02, 2020 07:31 PM #75

@wissox

Your right that's what I meant but I didn't word it properly. There was a time it seemed like the coach was on the red-hot seat. That seems to have subsided with them looking like a lock for the tournament. Indiana has been a tough place for Big-10 teams this year. Would be a big win if they get that especially with Indiana needing wins on the bubble

We end the season #1 by every metric. BANNER.

Agreed, the NCAA should declare KU the men's champs and South Carolina the women's champs. Bummed I don't get to see Sabrina Ionescu chase a title this tournament.

KU & SC being champs works for me!

Spending tomorrow night in Columbia, SC, so if there's going to be a storm the Horseshoe or Five Points kind of celebration for the women champs, I'd like to know about it.

(so I can avoid it!)

It's ok that the tournament was cancelled because, you know, there weren't any dominant teams...

How in the hell did KU drop to #2 in NET behind Gonzaga by beating Texas Tech? What a garbage ranking tool.

I saw that too. This is a really good question.

My theory is that Gonzaga benefited by playing games in the WCC tournament -- they played USF and then St Marys.. USF is an opponent roughly equal to TT, but St Marys is a better opponent. They won 84-66. That might have nudged them forward.

We would have spanked ass in the B12 tourney and reclaimed the NET.
