I'm just not convinced β€’ Dec 24, 2017 09:14 PM

I'm convinced in Trae Young. Wish he was at KU.

A stretch four like Dedric and a footer like Doke? We can hope right? :dark_sunglasses:

Sure thing. I know many people are interested but don't want to go looking for this stuff. Happy to help.

Silvio and Dotson both won awards

We could be looking at national honors for Dedric. Potential first team AA. Lots of great college posts this year but next year will be slim pickings.

Yeah, it doesn't seem likely that he ends up at KU.

Silvio will go up against Big Dave in the final. Game starts in 6 minutes, not sure if there is a stream.

@JayHawkFanToo Strongly agree. Especially with the class being so weak. Only exception was Bagley but he reclassed.

New 2020 name.

4*s but Dedric has already shown he is an excellent player and it will be his 4th season out of HS.

@BShark I did not know that. Everything I've seen and read says Charlie Moore is a point guard. I just thought he wasn't a very good one -- mainly the very poor assist/turnover ratio. So you've got me reconsidering the dynamic for next season. You believe he's going to be best served playing off the ball?

At 6'0", or really below that, it is difficult for me to see him having that as his primary role when Self has much longer guys available to man the 2-3 spots, like Grimes, Garrett, and Cunliffe (or Newman if he'd possibly return). I had envisioned Moore being insurance if we didn't get a top PG. Now that we have Dotson, I assumed he'd be the back PG and likely not in the game when Dotson was.

Your comment got me thinking, though, about Self and his preference of having two primary ball handlers in the game together. Assuming Vick is gone, do you see Moore and Dotson starting together?

From what I've seen I do think he is best in that role and not as a PG.

I think we see a rotation of Dotson/Grimes/Moore with generally two of them in the game at the same time. When Moore is out there, I think you hide him on the weakest offensive player the other team has. Not only is he short as you say, he just LOOKS tiny, like he should still be in HS.

It's fine though, Garrett as we have seen is a very good defender and Grimes has all the tools. Cunliffe has the tools as well. Next year the team can still be very good defensively while playing Moore around 20 minutes a game.

If Vick comes back or KU adds Romeo, the minutes for someone aren't going to be what they were hoping for.

I still think Newman is gone even though he has no business in the NBA. Plus honestly Newman right now is worse than Garrett if you check the numbers. If Newman did stay he might actually find himself pretty low on the totem poll, another reason for him to go if he can get paid somewhere, anywhere.

@Texas-Hawk-10 @BShark Did you know that a high school can submit a six-semester transcript? Thus the issues that may arise with prior places of education (such as overseas) can be addressed before the final year's transcript is submitted. That is what I was referring to. If there are "issues", this stuff should have already been submitted. I recall reviewing that when the Diallo deal was full tilt.

One note on Lightfoot, his blocked shots are much like Traylor's. Most are when he would come in as a second defender. I know no one has called him a rim protector or anything like that, just point out the difference in the blocks -- compared to Mickelson, or Withey, etc.

And really, we don't know what his three point ability might develop to be. He could end up being an excellent three point shooter on high attempts. Most stretch 4s get squared up looks (much like Ellis got). I have just thought his best opportunity to be a major contributor was years 4 and 5. Good guy to have on the roster long term, and obviously a necessity this season.

Thankfully this isn't like the Diallo situation. De Sousa went to a real school here. The Diallo situation was a hot mess and we knew that going in. Have not read the same kind of things about Silvio.

As for Lightfoot, I strongly agree. Great kid to have around and could really contribute to a good team year 4/5.

Charlie Moore isn't really a PG. He will be better served off the ball as a scorer. He will be listed as one because he is small. He actually fits pretty well with the guards KU has coming in. Grimes has sensational court vision and awareness, and Dotson is a penetrator.

When I listen to what Self has said about Moore, it sounds like he has a ways to go.

Moore was a 4*, fwiw.

@BShark

Better than 2 attempts, right? His 3 point shooting average last year was 66.7%.

Ha.

It can definitely be a part of his game going forward. If he can become a reliable jump shooter his JR/SR year that will really help him get minutes. I still think him redshirting next year would be best if he would be the 5th or 6th post player.

Lightfoot might be better off playing as a stretch PF rather than a close to the basket one. He is shooting 50% from the 3, best on the team; a little stat that gets overlooked.

On 8 attempts.

So, is it unreasonable to think that before DeSousa officially got his grades and test score, the "eligibility" stuff should have been fully readied and addressed? Maybe it was. But as I recall Self's quotes, I never recall him mentioning this issue before, or alluding to it, until his mention of a possible "appeal" a few days ago. We should all just assume we're dealing with a plunge into the abyss of NCAA eligibility until we actually see him playing. It's easier that way.

@Texas-Hawk-10 @BShark Put Mitch back at his natural position and he still shouldn't be playing this season (assuming we're playing to win a national title). That's really the larger point. Self, at the very best, had him slotted in as the 4th big behind Doke, Preston, and Whitman, and possibly the 5th with Coleby still in the mix.

I know we like to talk about him being out of position, but when you're in the true 4 spot, you are called upon to score in the post -- see all the 4s that came before him. In fact, that has been the primary role of 4s in Self's offense. Can we agree that Mitch's post-scoring game is pretty much nothing? Further, in the current offense, nothing stops the 5 from stepping away from the basket, either. Mitch is just not ready to be an offensive player with any depth or consistency.

Mitch has been fine on defense, given his lack of size. He has done an admirable job being forced into action before he's really ready. Where would we be without his play this season? We just need better play there.

The best we can hope for is that Mitch becomes more irrelevant this season, that he is permitted to red-shirt next season, and perhaps we have a better player by his final two seasons.

Literally every single player has to be cleared. Generally it happens before the start of the basketball season but of course this is a different situation due to Silvio coming at the semester break.

Dotson didn't have the best game scoring 17 points on 5-16 shooting (7-11 from the line) 8 boards and 4 assists but his team won a rematch against a loaded Cox Mill team that includes 2018 UNC commit Rechon Black and 2019 UNC deathlock Wendell Moore Jr.

Moore is very, very good. UK and the good guys have offered and visited him but I don't see him leaving North Carolina. UK wasn't in his top 10 and still sent a coach recently, that's how good he is.

If we are only talking about the trey ball, give me Greene all day. Greene's stroke was pure. He came to KU too early, I can hardly imagine if he had been allowed to shoot as freely as the last two teams.

Next season brings transfers and not one but the sudden, inexplicable anomaly of two 5-Star PGs. This all fills me with apprehension about the baggage that may hit the carousel next year.

You are overthinking it. Grimes grew up a KU fan. Dotson wanted desperately to play for a blue blood program. Dotson was targeted and prioritized in his JR year by KU while UNC and Duke closed their heavy PG leans.

As for this season, I am just advocating for tempered expectations regarding what the newbies second semester will actually enable.

All this team really needs from the newbies are subs, so our starters can play hard most of the game.

The newbies could supply that after a month or two.

More than that I doubt.

I would agree with this. I don't think Preston or Silvio save this team. Just letting the starters get a bit more rest and not having to play Mitch at the 5 could help a fair bit in the long run.

It's not that hard to imagine. The FBI put some numbers out there and it's pretty much widely known that Anthony Davis took 250k.

@justanotherfan I was initially going to disagree with you on Greene -- but I get your "useable athleticism" . Greene was stiff, couldn't dribble much laterally, he was slow laterally, and he was not the least bit explosive. He didn't have a quick first step either. However, he did have a couple cool dunks. He was of course a good athlete by the simple fact he was a D-I player. But relatively speaking, he didn't have high on-court athleticism.

Cunliffe did seem a bit stiff, maybe that was hesitancy. He did seem athletic though.

Yeah, it's definitely all relative. Greene is way more athletic than me but like you say he couldn't do much on the court especially against more athletic D1 teams.
