Vick was late to shoot around and will not start tonight 🤦🏻♂️
Jeez
I think they are equal players on shooting ability (Howard/Magee).
Howard though plays point guard which made it a lot easier for KU to stick Dotson on him which worked out that game. For tonight's game I cringe thinking who's going to guard Magee & Hoover on the 3 point line as they have collectively made more 3's then KU's entire team.
By Cavs. Momma better cal her Euro connects

While I don’t agree with Hunts action or the young lady in the video that is just as guilty as he is. I would like for someone to explain to me why Tyrek Hill is on the Chiefs roster, Hill pleaded guilty to beating and strangling his pregnant GF. I also don’t believe Hunt acted as he should (don’t think using racial slurs is ok but its no excuse) but both appeared to escalate the situation and I’m not sure I’d even call that an assault but if he lied to the chiefs about it, it’s on him. There ain’t many professions where you can lie to your employer and get away with once found out. I guess the NFL doesn’t care if there isn’t a video of the offense, I’d bet a hefty amount if Hill was recorded in his assault it would look much much worse. Why isn’t the guy from SF suspended for his second offense of the same kind?
A big difference between Hill's and Hunt's situation is video. Video exist for one and not the other. I think that plays a big part here.
I'm hopeful he's a solution as well. So far he's the odd man out of the rotation unless foul trouble/injury etc pops up.
It's tough. UCF had North Carolina on its schedule but the game was canceled I believe due to the hurricane. Of course UNC was really bad this year so the game wouldn't have benefited them. I'm just pointing out UCF did schedule two P5 teams, UNC/Pitt out of its 4 non-conference games. UCF did beat Pitt by 31, Pitt just played in the ACC championship game.
UCF has no margin for error while the P5 does. Until that changes this is the result
Grimes can be that other guy but until he snaps out of this funk its a good thing Vick is hitting at near 60%. Dedric hasn't shot the ball from the perimeter with any success either, same for Charlie. The offense is a major work in progress. Game 1 they looked impressive running stuff and it has deteriorated since
I agree our big's have been below average in guarding the perimeter so far. We'll have our hands full when teams have stretch 4's and 5's. We've already seen a few of those and its been an issue. Dedric and Doke are lazy when it comes to guarding away from the basket. Both would prefer to stand down on the block. Can they change? Not sure that's realistic but hopefully Self can drill some basic defensive awareness skills into them as the season goes on.

I expect a much better 3 point defense this evening; I will guess the coaching staff has been working on a game plan that suits the current skills of the team,
Well if Self has been reading this site maybe. We'll see if they gameplan differently but I'm expecting the same we saw Tuesday. Just have to hope their two gunners are not on tonight
As I'm sure your aware football schedules are set years in advance. 4 years ago UCF was 0-12, 3 years ago 6-7. I can't imagine they could foreshadow going 25-0 over the next two seasons and not even having the opportunity to play for a national championship. What AD/school can prepare a schedule from a smaller school/conference that is good enough to make the Top 4? Pretty impossible in today's climate. Imagine a P5 team in that same scenario snubbed from the Top 4. It would never happen. Never.
This is about the same issue Boise St had years ago trying to get into the big bowl discussion from a smaller conference. And the same issue is still here.
I agree with @justanotherfan here that this is benefiting P5 only to continue to rake in cash.
Regardless of UCF's schedule or who they have beat, they haven't lost in 2 years. At what point is that accomplishment rewarded with the chance to be the actual champion. As they proved last season by beating Auburn in the bowl game, if you give them the opportunity they can prove themselves on the football field. That's what's missing from this whole thing. UCF isn't even in the discussion to have a chance after going 25-0 in the last two years. Unfortunate
Walt Bell jumps from Florida St's Offensive Coordinator spot to UMass Head Coach. Look for Hugh Freeze to become FSU's new O-Coordinator in the next day or two. Seems like that is a good possibility.

@HighEliteMajor 100% Agree, as I have stated for a few years now, Basketball is changing. You need good 3 point shooting to win nowadays. Look at the Stanford game for instance, they shot a ton of threes compared to their loses and it its what kept the game close. It's the same way you see the spread offense working in the NFL. People maybe against the change and say it's bad ball but it works.
They (Stanford) shot a lot of 3's because KU's defense gave them open looks which when broken down reveals a big issue right now with KU's defense on hedging/help-side defense. Stanford took what the defense gave them which was wide open shots from practically every spot on the perimeter.
Opponents have shot 66-177 on 3's so far against KU (37%). KU, in comparison is 47-107 (43.9%) with Vick (59% and 28 makes) being a majority of that.
So opponents have made 19 more 3's and attempted 70 more.
So far it hasn't led to wins for the opponent and probably a big part of that is KU has a higher margin for error with its depth and talent across the board.
I would bet good money Wofford takes more 3's and makes more tonight. Some of that is a product of their offense anyway but right now Self and his players look content to let teams T up open shots as long as the end result is a W for KU. Villanova & Arizona St are games that could potentially make Self adjust some things after for conference play and March. This group is a real work in progress

If Miles wants, he can have the half-dozen or more players that quit playing hard for Florida St this year. I'll gladly send them this way
Wouldn't they have to sit one year? KU needs some immediate help but also needs to build the team with 4-5 year players. Perhaps some graduate transfers or even that rare JuCo player can help but concentrating on long term players should be the priority. Getting Lance LeGendre to recommit would be a really good start; AFAIK, he has not committed to any other program so he is still in play.
Most Likely would have to sit a year but I was only kidding for the most part. Guys quitting was fact but I don't know how many will be leaving as of today
LeGendre is one to keep an eye on. FSU has chased him as well as potentially being their 2nd QB signeee. I'm sure other programs will be on him as well after this early period goes by.

@BeddieKU23 And my post was before that even happened lol. Get him to Lawrence for a week, please.
Fortuitous timing there. Bravo. And yes maybe we can get Adidas to foot the bill. It's not like they are paying recruits right now. LOL. Too soon?

I'm predicting a loss on this one.

Fletcher Magee is a bonafide matchup nightmare for us. Attempting over 10 3's a game and while his efficiency is down a little this season he's by far the best shooter KU will have faced to date outside of Markus Howard. In that game we had Dotson to guard him (who did a fantastic job) and that's unlikely going to happen in this game with Magee a SG, so its a huge concern how we'll cover this one. Garrett might be busy again

Bill needs a visit from the Mayor again.
Good thing he's available right now.. Self get on the ringer
It's good to see I'm not alone here. I expected this years defense to be better with all the depth and size. However what we've seen so far in every game is some fundamental breakdowns from players/coaching that are leaving them vulnerable.

Future Ron Baker type of player?
Excellent comp idea. I haven't seen enough of Braun to say that's accurate but if his floor is Ron Baker down the road I'm sure we can all live with that. I like his shooting ability and it looks like he can put the ball on the floor so in KU's offense, in time, he's an ideal wing and I can see why they got him signed. I'm intrigued to see how he fits here
The reason I'm analyzing Self in regards to this issue is because I believe that coaching can change it. If I can notice it, I'm sure he's aware as well. So why haven't we seen changes?
Is it the players? Could be but we have seen this issue pop for years now. Maybe Self is teaching them differently and guys are reverting to old habits. I don't have the answer which is why its good to talk about it.
It's still early and KU has played a tough non-conference where weaknesses tend to get exposed so I'm really not trying to be too critical. However this issue does look like the main issue with KU's defense right now. It's correctable and I'm looking to see changes in the upcoming games- especially with Villanova coming to town in a few weeks
Braun has good height which will help him. If he can put on some good muscle it will be interesting to see where he is at development wise by year 3. I expect unless the cupboard is bare that he's a red-shirt candidate. This is the type of kid you'll get your value in those later years
KU's defense early in the Stanford game was stellar. At one point they looked completely without rhythm or a purpose.
Haase then changed his offense going 5 out, spreading the ball with a big screening up top and cutting to the hoop which had success at least 4-5 times during the game. They were able to scheme successfully to get Doke out of the lane and out of position.

@BeddieKU23 We're overhelping on drives, which is leaving people wide open on the perimeter...
Yes which was the main point of this thread. My question is why are we helping when its not working. Players have been taught this way, coaches have the power to change it. We certainly have the depth and size to allow guys to 'man them up'.
mayjay said:
@BeddieKU23 I rack my brain on this. The only thing I can only imagine is he likes to have anyone driving get doubled to protect Doke (and before him, our other foul-prone bigs) from more fouls. It may be an outgrowth of 2 things: first, Self wants to keep bigs in the game to keep alive his preference for High/Low. Second, like most current coaches, Self "grew up" when 3 ptrs were the bailiwick of so-called specialists, like Terry Brown. He may just instinctively believe 2 pt shots, which historically have been more accurate, are more dangerous in volume than 3 point shots.
Unfortunately, I have no explanation for how he might still believe these things, or teach them to his players after the past several years, primarily the 'Nova game last year.
As with most things with Self its a process before he makes landslide adjustments. We saw how he evolved his offense to personnel the last few seasons but that was how many years in the making. I believe this is the same deal, he's not there yet to making defensive changes.
His defensive philosophy used to be one of the best in the country but I no longer see his scheme working in today's game. With so much emphasis on perimeter shooting and spacing I'm truly at a lost for words why there hasn't been noticeable adjustments in this area. Maybe he's still a ways away from adjustments but its frustrating seeing guys leave their defender to hedge 2-3 feet over, not disrupt the drive/play and then watch that man drill a wide open 3. Seems counterproductive. I do believe coaching can change this issue that we've seen bite us before, as you mentioned Nova, Final 4 and other games recently. I'm wondering when enough is enough for Self.
A side note. Doke is foul prone but most of Doke's fouls are turnovers. Self mentioned this in his presser last week I believe. He doesn't foul a ton defensively. He gets most of his fouls for player control violations. Trying to drive his man up the lane and seal, trying to score in the post with brute force, going over the top on defenders for rebounds, moving screens. I would bet 80% of his fouls this year have been from those. Doke has been a quality rim defender this season when he actually is in position to make a play.
Glad KU got the W in OT. It wasn't pretty but we saw some more heroics from Vick again. This dude is having a great season so far.
I know its early but is anyone else alarmed at KU leaving shooters open on the perimeter? I've been seeing this trend from KU for years but its really noticeable this season. Why is KU helping so much on drives and leaving shooters WIDE OPEN? KU has depth and size to play teams differently.
Self is usually really good about making adjustments. Film should point this out easily. Teach these kids to stay home on drives and let defenders play 1 on 1. I would love to see how well teams shoot the 3 against KU when they don't give them a dozen or so wide open looks a game.
What does everyone think? How can Self change/improve this defense
Whatever
Big 3 by vick.
