Thank you Brandon Williams!!

FIRE HUDY. she's clearly causing injuries and is responsible for the shortfalls of this team.

A lot of CB's flowing in for Brandon Williams to Arizona which is good for KU on multiple fronts (Grimes, Dotson).

Edit: He's deciding this week which is why

I guess Hudy will finally be worth the hoopla when she makes Humans into Super-Humans.

@Texas-Hawk-10

I don't believe Newman will be coming back after this season.

We already got lucky getting him 2nd time around and I think he'll have a good enough season to get drafted in the 2nd round next year.

If he leaves there is plenty of room for PG's, heck there's a need for at least 1 ball handler even if he stayed.

The front-court is a wild-card. With the Lawson's waiting I think Preston will look to be a OAD. If he returned, well Self will figure it out.

The hope of getting an elite big man will probably rely on some of them waiting until spring. Outside of the Top 4-5 bigs in this class there isn't a ton of depth or immediate impact talent. A guy like Ian Steere is a type KU could land in the fall that has high athleticism, good size already and could develop.

@BShark

I'd take any of the 3 committing today and be ecstatic about it.

There's no question there is plenty of minutes to go around with what we are losing after this season. And if I'm any of the 3 I wouldn't be scared off by Moore, he's not Newman or Graham that last years recruits mentioned as standing in their way..

I like that recruits are taking note of how KU is using its guards. Teams can no longer negatively recruit against us and the comments from these top guys has been positive.

Dotson is originally from Chicago. I wasn't aware of that before. Could be a key factor for KU in that one..

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • Jun 05, 2017 03:12 PM

@Kcmatt7

Yup, although the loss of Brangers (one of the top 5 JUCO's) in the land hurt them. He was going to provide perimeter shooting which they still lack outside of Evans. They still lack post depth if Odiase isn't healthy and I don't see anyone on the roster to rest Zach Smith much but this is possibly the best Tech team in a long time.

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • Jun 05, 2017 03:07 PM

@BShark

My post spring Big-12 rankings

  1. KU- obvious with Svi back

  2. West Virginia- Losing Macon and possibly their best recruit hurts them but its hard to bet against Huggins and the style of play. The development of West/Konate in the post is paramount for them. They will need Bolden/Bender and something from their other 4 recruits to be rotation pieces to hold onto this spot.

  3. TCU- Lots of positive momentum for this team. Picked up a useful grad transfer in Hamdy from VCU. Big body that can rebound and solidified their #3 spot for now. Dixon has made a lot of waves in a short amount of time.

  4. Oklahoma- Maybe a little ambitious placing them here but the addition of Trae Young plus expected improvements from their returning players makes this a potential pick in the top half. Kruger's teams are never down for long. If they land McIntosh they will be a tough team.

  5. Baylor- 4 seniors still makes them a tough out. They are weak at SG and post depth. They will need Vital (redshirt) and Clark to make an impact as freshman in the post. Motley was the difference between 2nd and 5th IMO

  6. Texas Tech- Could start 5 seniors and have 5 more upperclassmen in the rotation. Evans & Zach Smith could be 1st team Big-12 performers this year.

  7. Texas- Bamba raises them from last. Getting any kind of stability from Coleman at the PG position will help them. Jones/Bamba are NBA players but what else scares anyone. I don't trust Smart enough to make them good.

  8. Kansas St- 3 starters back and 2 rotation pieces for delusional Webby. No idea what they will get from the numerous unranked players they signed.

  9. Iowa St- Biggest fall of them all. Iowa St didn't have a good spring. Numerous players left, they missed on targets and picked up what they could to fill out the roster. Wigginton is an absolute stud but he can only do so much as a Freshman.

  10. Oklahoma St- Finally Forte is gone. Evans went pro. Carroll returning gives them some hope. They could be better then Iowa St but this is a team that will rely so much on Carroll on offense.

@jayballer54 @BShark

Fully agree about Dotson, one of my favorite players in the class. KU has a great chance with him, Grimes & Carey. There's little chance all 3 end up at KU but I don't think we can go wrong getting any combination of the 2.

I just worry that Charlie Moore scares one of them away when these guys look at who's in their way for playing time.

Dotson is the true point guard of the 3 and I think we would get at least 3 years out of him. I see him as a day 1 starter if he comes here.

With Grimes your getting a big guard with point guard skills. He's most likely a 2 year player max, maybe even a OAD. Definite starter.

With Carey your getting scoring guard with point guard skills. Maybe his development takes a little longer, has a similar season that Devonte or Frank had as a freshman. Stunned he's ranked in the 80's still.

The staff better close on at least one of these.

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • Jun 05, 2017 09:56 AM

@BShark

Here's a sheet I've been keeping track of the Big-12.

The orange marks scholarships used for 2018-19 players.

West Virginia's top 100 recruit Culver is rumored to be possibly ineligible. We'll see what happens there.

Oklahoma got a visit from Mkyle McIntosh. Also visted Oregon. Could easily end up in either spot.

Baylor might be getting a transfer (sit-out) in Vance Jackson (former Top 60 kid) who played at Uconn as a freshman.

Iowa St might want to add another guard if possible with the McNeill transfer

Something will have to give at TCU with 14 scholarship players. Maybe the Rafus grade rumors become true and he's the defection.

scout interview

Who has really prioritized you?
A lot of schools are doing a great job but the schools coming to mind are Kansas, Florida, Arizona, USC, Miami (Fl) is doing a good job, Wake and NC State.

What’s the next step for you?
Looking to cut it down pretty soon and look at my options and talk with my family and see what school is the best fit.

Will you make a decision in the fall or spring?
My goal is to make a decision by the fall time but you never know. Things can come up, things can change but that’s my goal right now.

What do you like about Kansas?
I have already formed a relationship with all the coaches on the coaching staff, they have made me a priority, they say I can lead since day 1, and I took a visit out there and it’s great out there so it was a great visit.

All other Hawks on campus except Garrett who graduates June 9th and will be on campus after that.

KU's Non-Conference Schedule released • Jun 02, 2017 01:23 PM

Not the most Challenging schedule. Some good mid-majors, some big named teams that are not on KU's level. Obviously Kentucky is the biggest one of them all.

Oct-31- Pittsburg St (Exhibition)

Nov 7- Fort Hayes St (Exhibition)

Nov-10 Tennessee St (Home)

  • Last year 17-13, both leading scorer's gone. Will be a nice opener

Nov 14- Kentucky (Champions Classic)

  • We'll see if experience again trumps freshman

Nov 17- South Dakota St (Home)

  • The best mid-major player in the country Mike Daum will come to Allen Fieldhouse. Daum averaged 25 points a game as a Soph and is a lethal big man from the 3 point land. SDS lost to Gonzaga in 1st round of the Tournament last year. 6 other rotation players return as well. This will be a bit of a trap game after playing Kentucky.

Nov 21- Texas Southern (Home)

  • Lost to UNC in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament last yr. Another solid mid-major team coming to Allen Fieldhouse. Will not be the easiest game.

Nov 24- Oakland (Home)

  • 25-9 last season for one of the best mid-major coaches in the land. 2 former Big-12 players are in their rotation (Martez Walker formely of Texas and their leading scorer) and Stevie Clark (Oklahoma St) who was kicked off the team. Not likely to be a pushover game.

Nov 28- Toledo (Home)

  • 17-17 last season. Likely to be one of the 2 easiest non-conference games we play.

Dec 2- Syracuse (Neutral, played in Miami)

  • Syracuse headed for a terrible season. KU should pound them in this game.

Dec 6- Washington (Sprint Center)

  • Washington Will be lucky to win 10 games. This will be a rout.

Dec 10- Arizona St (Home)

  • I wonder if Bragg will travel to sit on the bench in Allen. Cunliffe I think has to sit this one out as well. They have 3 senior backcourt players, a Top 50 wing and little post depth. Should not be a tough game.

Dec 16- Nebraska (Away)

  • Nebraska will again be a bottom dweller of the Big-10. Always good to get a few away games in.

Dec18- Omaha (Home)

  • Should be the easiest home game of the season.

Dec 21- Stanford (Away, Neutral court in Sacremento)

  • Reid Travis will try and go for 30 again. Stanford should be marginally better because most of the team returns and a few hightly touted freshman join the frey.

Jan 27- Texas A&M (Home)

  • The annual Big-12/SEC Challenge game. Tyler Davis goes for career game after wanting KU in his recruitment. Williams will be the most electrifying player on the court after snubbing the draft and a lottery pick to return to college. Should be a good game.

Yeah Arizona has to be very tempting for recruits. Great location.

I'm hoping for Grimes and Carey, then fill in post players as needed.

Been watching recent Ian Steere videos. I'm coming around.

@jayballer54

Right its still early but at least there's a whole bunch of kids KU is interested in or vice versa. We have cast a wide net this cycle and the domino's start to come off the board after the summer ends into the fall as kids get on campus etc.

The biggest domino for KU will be Grimes. With his ability to play the PG spot or "combo guard" role he's the key to the entire class. Pairing him with Moore and whatever returns at wing/SF is potentially a deadly combination of perimeter talent once again.

Doke is the biggest wildcard to 2018 recruiting for KU. If he returns his Jr year we still need a solid backup to him. If he leaves we'll probably have some indication through the recruits that mention KU as a possible destination. @BShark has been saying this and I agree. If we are in it for the elite talent, its likely the staff is relaying what they think Doke may do. If recruits are passive about KU, its likely they think he could be around after this year.

KU vs Fizzou? • Jun 01, 2017 03:56 PM

@HighEliteMajor

You are not wrong for wanting the rivalry back. We currently don't have a true rival like most programs across the country have.

Kansas St is a laughable excuse for one in MU's absence and Iowa St has matched on-court performance with KU for the last 3-4 years but we're always thinking Iowa St is going to fall back down without Hoiberg and this year looks like that will happen. The Elijah Johnson year seemed to spark something. But I'm not sure Prohm is the type of coach that becomes a villain for KU fans. Their fan-base is nutty but that's just the effect of trying to compete with KU.

I guess in my opinion since Missouri left we have further distanced ourselves from them in everything basketball related. I do admit, if Missouri had a consistent program that was worth playing and added value to KU's program to play them I'd be all for it. Otherwise let them rot.

Question, will this even matter if in the not so distant future KU is looking for another conference itself? We seem to be heading to that inevitability unless some measures are taken by the powers in this conference.

Mitch Article • Jun 01, 2017 03:32 PM

@justanotherfan

The article about him says he plans on only getting to the 225 area which is really only 10-12 pounds. I hope the staff encourages him to get to 230 and see if he's still got his athleticism. Lightfoot might not be a kid who fills out too much. We'll see, he definitely needs to have a big summer.

Wiggins is solid, probably a Top 40 prospect. Still has lots of room to develop, has great size for the 2/3 at 6'6 and a really nice outside shot. From North Carolina which is an area we've been recruiting hard recently. Maryland people think they have a great chance, maybe they do. He's gotten a lot of new offers this spring but KU is one of the few programs that have kept in touch with him everyday he said recently. Will he leave the East is the biggest question and we might not have immediate playing time for him. We'll see how this one progresses.

There are actually more guys that KU is after then I listed. Moses Brown #8 but I can't see him seriously considering KU without knowing Doke is gone.

Darius Garland #6 - been considered a Duke lean for a while but has a KU offer.

Bol- Don't see him leaving the West for any team other than Kentucky.

Emmitt Williams- unless we become best friends with his handler, not likely with Lawson playing the PF.

Brandon Williams #20- Another not likely to leave the West but has visited KU.

Keldon Johnson# 21- KU has been in contact with him, lots of teams after him.

Jaylen Hoard #28- Has an offer I believe. Another NC kid.

Hamier Wright #51- almost reclassified to 2017, KU has kept contact but probably not a likely destination.

Jaedon Ledee & Jamie Lewis #59&60- Not sure what interest we have in them anymore. Lewis unofficial visited during the season.

Jules Bernard- Recent offer, West Coast most likely

David Duke- Offered during winter, not likely leaving the East.

Ian Seere #175- Another NC Kid, I think its likely we can get him if the staff presses. Has an offer.

Jus a little update • Jun 01, 2017 11:21 AM

Updates to 247 composite. KU targets

Bagley- #1 (KU in his top 6, staying in 2018)

Williamson- #2 (no idea?)

Jordan Brown- #5 (KU involved)

Quickley- #9 (KU in top 4)

Grimes- #12 (KU will make his Top 5)

Smart- #13 (KU in top 6)

Bol Bol - #14 (mentioned KU recently)

Williams - #18 (slow playing, will most likely be spring)

Quinerly- #19 (Believe KU in his top 7?)

King #31 (said recent KU involved)

Hamilton #33 (has had a poor spring, Duke offered)

Dotson #40 (KU in his top 4, likely to cut to 8 soon)

McCormack #45 (said to be involved)

Wiggins #62 (big mover, still too low)

Days #67 (big mover, has been offered)

Carey #82 (way too low Top 40 player, KU likely to get a visit)

KU vs Fizzou? • Jun 01, 2017 09:48 AM

@HighEliteMajor

I didn't grow up around this rivalry so my answer may differ from those that live in the KU/MU area. Now since I was a boy I've disliked Missouri, still do, but since they have left the Big-12 they have become irrelevant in College Basketball.

While your question was to focus on what KU gains from it, it does seem so one-sided to MU's benefit with the current situation of both teams. They fell off the basketball landscape moving to the SEC. Why should we care to play a team that sucks? Not that its the real reason Missouri Basketball sucks but one could infer that Missouri was relevant because of Kansas. So why would we help them?

Does playing Missouri help us win championships? Does it help prepare us to win the Big-12? Does it help our seeding, RPI etc. I don't believe it does.

I enjoyed the rivalry for what it was but currently all KU cares about is continuing the conference title streak and winning NCAA championships. In that mindset playing Missouri does not help us accomplish either.

KU vs Fizzou? • May 30, 2017 04:30 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Hypothetically if the KU/MU rivalry was turned back on today would it matter to the players?

Enough years have passed now where the connection to playing them annually is gone. Nobody is teaching the freshman to hate Missouri from day-1 anymore.

Do you think this is a rivalry where it can just be turned on- like a flip of a switch. Or like riding a bike you haven't rid in 5+ years.

I'm sure it would be easy for the fans to build this up but how easy would it be to motivate KU players? They don't play them in conference anymore so a part of the importance of beating Missouri is gone. Would anyone care playing them once a year in a meaningless non-conference game?

KU vs Fizzou? • May 30, 2017 03:59 PM

Agree with this, until they become relevant we gain nothing by playing them. This year might have been the only time they have some decent talent to compete with.

Right actually possibly 4 wings, I forgot about Cunliffe. In that case I can't see a wing being added at all.

Grimes/Carey/Steere would be a nice class, and I think quite possible. Might have to take more bigs though. If Preston and Doke both go after this year that's 3 post scholarships to fill. Just one more year out of one or both would be ideal to bridge to 2019.

I think we have to recruit like the position is wide open. Losing Graham & Svi for sure. Newman, most likely gone- Vick? Wildcard depending on his year. Moore, Cunliffe, Garrett, Lawson is a nice core that obviously needs another PG and a shooter. I think KU should always be looking to have 6 scholarship available guards/wings. So important to have depth and flexibility with today's game.

Jus a little update • May 30, 2017 03:52 PM

@justanotherfan

I see both on the roster in 2018 but you never know with today's kids, Cunliffe left after a semester for KU. Garrett will be one to follow especially as he settles into a position in College which could be any guard position. I imagine the NBA is going to be intrigued with his size and skill going forward.

Vick will be limited somewhat by Svi this year but I think he'll have every opportunity by years end to test the combine. He's likely to be a combine star with his athleticism and measurable's I'm assuming. That's why I think we have to recruit wings, there's a real chance our top 4 guards are gone next season.

I'd love to get both. Days despite his size is a PF. Maryland people think they will get Wiggins. Wouldn't be a huge loss since KU could have 3 returning wing players.

Definitely, best case is Vick/Garrett/Cunliffe are still on the roster in 2018 and then you have KJ who looks like he will be a wing as well. That would really put getting a wing at a low priority but we'll see what happens. I think a wing who can play SG as well would still be a priority which I think Wiggins fills nicely. Days, correct looks like a more undersized PF then a big wing.

The biggest domino to fall for KU's class is who it gets at PG. Because its unlikely Newman will be around after this year Grimes is obviously priority #1 thru 50,000. Grimes fills that combo guard position that Self covets so much. I hate to say we are depending on getting a Top 15 player but Grimes is literally the best fit recruit we are after in the class.

Exactly, with Lawson on board we are not getting an elite PF. So getting someone with great athletic ability and further development to un-tap I think is a great option to put along side Dedric. KU vs Fizzou? • May 30, 2017 11:06 AM

somewhere Kim English is laughing or crying, whichever one comes first

@BShark

I disagree about PJC. Between injuries and being passed on by more talented options he's never proven to be the type of PG that an elite team needs. I think he's become the option this year because Zona missed on other PG targets, as well as not expecting Simmons would bolt. He is a senior so that should help him but he's pretty limited especially size wise. Arizona will face a lot of teams where the opposing PG is equal or better then theirs. I think that cannot be overlooked IMO. I could be wrong, I often am.

Don't get me wrong Arizona on paper has everything to go as far as they want. I think PG play and their bench leave a bit to be desired compared to last years squad. Miller has also proven he disappoints often in March.

@JayHawkFanToo

Ayton Will play the 4 just like they played Markennan. Pinder is a solid rebounder but doesn't do much else. Arizona last year had Commanche who bolted for the pros and was a real defensive presence off the bench. They will lack that going to their bench this season.

I think for a team that will probably be ranked 1 or 2 to start the season, you want better at PG then they have

All I have to say is Adidas better come through with this one or its time to bail

Grimes talking about KU and Self. Positives..

We don't need to discuss who will make the final list yet, but can you talk about the message of some of the bigger programs?

Sure. Coach Self called and said I'm a top priority and that he plays a lot of guards and sees me bringing in something different than the other guards, because of my size. He said their known now for their guards, but that I would be unique because of being able to play point guard at that size.

I think USC is being undervalued. Top 5 team they have IMO and could easily be the best Pac-12 team next season. There are anywhere from 5-7 NBA prospects on their team. Thornton who transferred from Duke most likely won't even start! The O'Bannon freshman kid can play and he'll have a tough time finding minutes. Big revival for that program after a positive end to their season in the NCAA's last yr.

Arizona has some great talent but they lack a top PG. Cartwright has been nothing more then a role player for 3 years and the freshman they have I'm assuming will take time to acclimate. They don't have a lot of depth inside, a JUCO will be the primary backup with a Top 100 undersized C in Ira Lee (KU recruited for a while). I think the hype for Arizona is a little overblown right now. Definitely have the talent but when has Sean Miller not had a stacked team and the season always ends far short of their goal..

Definitely he could start. I've not wavered in my thought that he's going to have a big year regardless of whether Svi came back or not.

Here's one train of thought on what could happen:

Graham, Newman, Svi are all known for being shooters. Do we really need 3 players with similar skill sets on the floor?
Now if we insert Vick into the starting lineup instead of Svi we get "athlete" with developing perimeter & driving game. Vick is a better rebounder and had a bunch of hustle plays that extended possessions that are as valuable as stats that show up in the box score.

Will be interesting to see what Self favors.

Another train of thought is he favors Svi because he's a Senior. We've seen Self use that kind of favoritism in the past..

Returns to full contact drills next week. Positive signs, lots of conditioning, film study staying apart of the team despite the limits to his injury. Italy will be the biggest benefit to him out of any player on the roster

  • KU coach Bill Self told the Journal-World on Thursday that Azubuike was “right on schedule” with what team doctors had hoped during the rehab process.*

  • “We anticipate him being full contact next week,” Self said. “And that’s right where the doctors said he’d be.”*

  • Despite the injury, Azubuike continued to work closely with the team throughout the season, even going through workouts that did not put the wrist in any jeopardy. Self said earlier this spring that the KU big man did more running and conditioning after the injury than he did before it.*

  • Although the season did not allow for much on-the-court learning, Azubuike learned a lot from film and from observing the Jayhawks in action and will enter the summer leading up to the 2017-18 season expected to be a major part of next season’s team.**

@drgnslayr

Perfect example. 2017 Missouri Recruiting class.

They signed Porter's dad, hmmm Michael and Jontay follow.

Martin drops by Jeremiah Tilmon's High School not even a week after getting the job, just so happens his sister is a principle at Tilmon's school. Tilmon is still technically signed to Illinois. Days later he asks out of his LOI...hmmm

Not to toot the KU horn but we got Mario Chalmers by bringing in his father.. Wasn't Danny Manning a similar situation? Things happen inside and outside the rules every day..

I would like to think Self is more "straight ball" then "side-pocket johnny". We tend to hear from recruits that Self's pitch is straight forward and doesn't give these kids a candy bar and sell them the world like some other big time coaches tend to.

I think nowadays every big Power 5 team and even the elites have to live in this "competitive advantage" battle. More and more reports are coming about about shoe handlers and shoe runners telling kids which schools to go to and which to consider. Too many hands in the pot and nothing the NCAA can do about it unless they find out
